  • Hi Flash

I normally vary my lunch around salad (Mediterranean style food) my salads are all varieties of green leaf, peppers, tomatoes, cucumber, carrot, beetroot etc. I vary what is there to change the flavour and appearance; I then add meat or cheese, so even though it is salad based it changes every day, I also have a plate at work and put my lunch on it, I find the visual effect of a bowl of salad on a plate helps, as it looks a lot more than it seems in a bowl?

I believe the advice is to not have any diet soft drinks because it continues your craving for sugar, which makes the diet harder to sustain. That being said I was a Diet Coke addict before I started this diet. I can’t permenantly cut it out so I’ve just been treating myself to one when I go out, as I think it’s better to have a Diet Coke than a glass of wine!

Hi everyone 😀 And I am feeling much better today Thankyou. Just got back from Lidls with lots of veggies and salad stuff to load up the fridge. The lentil daal I made last night from the BSD recipe book was delicious. The recipe uses the daal as a stuffing for sweet peppers but I ate them without peppers. Today I will use the leftover daal as MM’s recipe suggests.
To change the subject slightly ….I used to wake in the morning pre BSD with a niggly knotted type pain in my stomach. I went to my GP two years ago had the normal tests etc and was treated with medication for IBS. There have been times when I have stopped taking the meds but then have a flare up and have to take the tabs again. I was lying and bed this morning and it dawned on me that I haven’t experienced any discomfort in ages!! No pain no bloating, no trapped wind and believe me I could phhhart for GB if it was an Olympic sport!! And win a gold medal. It seems as though this diet has calm things down another reason for me to stick with it👍🏻
Oooh look I’ve found the fart 💨 emoticon 😁😁😁

Hi, no it was How to Lose Weight Well – they covered various diets and used a couple of friends, two cousins, a pair of brothers and presenter, also a doctor, under-went various things like cold water swimming, sauna etc to see if they have any effect on weight loss. There are another 4. However Michael Moseley’s stuff is far, far superior.

I am ashamed that I had forgotten my own thread – Greetings!

Thanks again for all the advice guys. To everyone who has posted to me so far 🙂

Sunshine-girl, no you didn’t put me off at all. We are 3 days into starting again. I’ve lost 5 pounds and my levels are starting to come down. I eat 3 meals a day but I don’t snack at night and I get the dawn effect, so tonight I am going to try cheese and milk before bed. I woke up today to 7.2 lastnight I was 7.8 2 hours after food and 6.7 3 hours after.

I have, for now canned my Metformin. I want this to work through what I eat as I really hate taking medication. Physically I gip when I see pills, so even in food it’s a physiological battle to take the 4 a day my doctor wants to shove down my throat.

I am just trying to sort out alternatives to plan water, I have been a coke zero addict since it’s come out and whilst (with 4 calories per 2L) you cant really get fat on it or have massive level spikes, I don’t also fancy soda stream water all the time.

I’ve gone off diet drinks for the most part but still use a sugar free squash to get my water intake up – if I didn’t do that I would not be able to drink all the water I need so whatever helps you stick to the diet. Another issue with all these sugar substitutes (apart from Jo’s answer above which I agree with) is the artificial sweeteners in most things are just bad for you. But, whatever helps you stick to the diet, do it – there are pros and cons in all things and a bit of artificial sweetener or diabetes – I know which one I’d choose!

Just looked – that was the night before, just going to watch last night’s offering, but I remember the ones last year – they are about trying out all the different types, without really comparing the health details. So the title ‘how to lose weight well’ is very misleading. And that was just from last years series….

  • Hi everyone, I’m still around (unfortunately the same amount of me as there was before), I haven’t been reading or posting for a couple of days but it seems like longer to me because before I was on here about four times a day! I’m feeling a little discouraged because I can’t seem to get back into my BSD stride. I start each day well but by mid-afternoon I’m having crackers with my cheese, or some chocolate (not the healthy stuff) or ice cream, and continue snacking into the evening. Enough to keep me maintaining instead of losing. I don’t know why I always think that a new year or some other milestone date will magically turn me into a different person who finds dieting easy and exercise appealing! I’m still exactly the same person with the same reaction to stresses and temptations as I was the day before. Well, I’ll keep plodding on.

Day 3 for me, and thankfully the sweet cravings have gone, although I think I should change my username to I.P-Freely now.
Not weight myself at all, as I don’t have any scales in the house but I can see some minor changes in my body shape.
I’m in my early 40’s , 5’9 and last time I weight myself at the gym (Just before Xmas) I was sitting round 112kg. Never been able to get it below 109 even after 2 years at the gym. Although I have good base level of fitness carrying that kinda of weight makes it hard work and prone to injury.
Guess I have to stop kidding myself that 5 x 30min of exercise is going to counter a poor diet.
When I was in my 30’s I used to weight 69-72kg but this was due to me doing a lot of kickboxing (Including full contact fights), but since them Ive changed my focus, and worked on my career, moved from factory to IT and became deskbound, married + kids and its just crept up.
I had health check up last year that showed my bloods to be 5.8 after fasting which though in normal range was bit high (Father has type 2) and my cholesterol was with the upper ranges of normal.
    Enough about me.
I’ve managed to keep my carbs below 50, they seem to be hovering round the 20-30 mark and my cals a round the 800ish mark. My main aim is to get the weight down and restart the gym and don’t laugh Skateboarding. I started last year and really enjoy the challenge but because of my weight, I get to nervous to do anything other than roll round. So main goal is get myself below 100kg and slowing aim for 80-90kg as I am broad and when I was at my lowest weight, I didn’t look right or feel that good even though I was incredibly fit.
I have amazing support from my wife as well. She is helping me by cooking my evening meal (Something she insists on doing) with in the BSD recommendations. Like last night Chicken stir fry with onion, pepper and some spices added to it. She had some as well as really enjoyed it.

  • Hello folks,

How are we all doing? Seems a bit quiet here at the mo!

I have been quite organised with food prep so have managed to bring my breakfast and lunch into work for a couple of days now. I hope this will last! Keep forgetting to do my food diary though, so need to get on with that. For those of you who do packed lunches, what do you typically have? I’m after some ideas so that I don’t get bored! 🙂

Thanks Angela, I will do that also 😉

This morning we’ve had 2 eggs right from the shell, and a small Pro bio yoghurt with blueberries and I had some cinnamon in mine. Lot of protein and just under 10G of carbs and 145Cals.

Which reminds me to do my blood sugars as it’s fast approaching 2 hours since, so thanks for reminding me 🙂

That kept me until lunch when I had home made celery and pea soup with garlic and some herbs in
A small banana mid afternoon and then the small serving of BBQ grilled fish on caluflower rice and salad with small

Interesting question toby101. I drink diet coke all the time on this diet and have lost 5.3Kg/10lb 10 ounces in the three weeks I’ve been at it. So I don’t think it stops weight loss. And my blood sugars are now amazing. But I’ve read somewhere here that it’s not recommended because we are supposed to be giving up sugar and a craving for sugar and diet coke is still sweet tasting so we never actually get the chance to learn to live without that sweet taste. Unfortunately, I really crave the sweet stuff and the diet coke gives me what I need to be able to stick to this diet. I also use equal in my tea and coffee and stevia in some sweet very low carb treats. So I guess I’m really missing out on one of the big benefits of sticking to this diet properly. But I’d rather have the diet coke if it allows me to stick to the diet.

Yes I saw the Channel 4 Diet programme & thought the diets chosen were rather dodgy & Weight Watchers still promoting low fat & lots of carbs but I suppose compared to what they were eating before any restrictions on eating would reduce their calories! I was truly amazed by how ignorant they all were about nutrition but I suppose we are more clued up here because of Michael!

    Morning everyone!

Well that’s me started day one, no looking back now! I’m not ready to give up my morning porridge but instead of buying those microwave flavoured packs which I used to love I’ve made it myself. 25g of wholegrain oats cooked in a pan with unsweetened almond milk and 10g almond butter on top. It’s so much nicer than the instant stuff and feels like a treat coz I took the time to cook it. And only 15g of carbs. (I’m only on 36g for the whole day so not worried about this).

Tigs – thanks for the tip about MFP 🙂 I didn’t realise I could set my target calories to 800 as it usually tells me off if I ever eat below 1000. I’ve also adjusted my targets for fat, carbs and protein and entered all of todays meals into it last night so I know exactly what I should be eating. As a severely addicted carb and sugar addict I know this might get tough but I’m hoping that being super organised will stop me going off track.

  • Hi everyone

the futurelearn diabetes course had a bit in the first week about LCHF, and it featured in that amazing “fixing Dad” film. I found the second week was less interesting.

The ginger is just a cube of frozen ginger – I used to find it went off, so I bought a large piece, put it all through my mini food processor (several batches) and froze it in an ice cube tray. Good for cooking, or just infusing to drink in boiling water.

I bought some of those kalette things before Christmas, but didn’t get around to using them. I hate food waste, but they went a bit slimy. I will try them again if I see them.
Lost another kilo when I weighed this morning! Almost back to November weight.

I made a lovely dish of braised celery with lentils yesterday – bit carby (17g) because of the lentils and tomatoes, but very nice.
The recipe used bacon, but I substituted some meat from a gammon joint that I am working my way through.

    Hi Rebecca
I’m on day 2 as well. Decided I won’t weigh myself until a week. Yesterday went well. Hadn’t done the prep I’d hoped but made a quick tea with omelette and came in under 800 on food. Milk in tea will most likely make that up to 800. In a bit of a muddle about CARBS, fats, protein. Know to keep carb under 50g a day but not sure about other 2. Read that we are putting our body into ketosis which is what burns the fat-also the smelly Atkins Diet breath!!! This can be alleviated by reducing protein. Arrrgghhh!!!! Can’t be hungry, fat and smelly! I don’t remember it mentioning this in the book. Got any clue?? Best of luck for day 2! We can do this ! Mikki

Tried the tomato, ham and lentil soup last night using up some leftover ham and it is highly recommended. Got enough for two more days for us. Already feel better if a little tired after getting up, sigh, in the night, twice, double sigh. It can only be downwards! Keep on going down all. Oh did anyone watch the Channel 4 diet thing last night, which I thought quite irresponsible in parts. Not half as good as watching Michael Moseley

Day 4 & after hopping to the loo four or five times through the night I decided to stand on my scales & I am down 1 & 1/2 lbs so at least on the way down again! although of course it’s mostly just losing fluids.
I have been averaging around 900 daily calories & now fortunately running out of Christmas leftovers to use up although even after a repeat supper of stir fry beef, 200 grams each time, there is still some roast beef left. The freezer is turning into a left over dust bin with trying to not throw away “good food”! Today I will thaw out the coq au vin made with turkey 🦃 to have with yesterday’s cauliflower rice & lunch will have to be salad with courgette spring onion omelette in my effort to empty my fridge & start afresh. Tomorrow proper BSDiet shopping for ingredients for favourite BSD recipes so finally back into a more normal food routine.
I hope you are both feeling better Nickix & Miss Ziggy. Sarah my reaction to our Sky box going awol was a close run thing with a cupboard full of chocolates 😂😂
Good luck everyone only three more days to go until week one is completed👍👍🍀🍀🍀

  • Hello everyone! My official weekly weigh was Saturday and I was very excited with a small 0.6kg loss as it took me to 16kgs down in total. Unfortunately that was also NYE and I really overindulged on food and alcohol, but it was a lovely evening with friends. Then I had a BBQ on the 2nd and more food and wine – and my weight rebounded very quickly in the wrong direction 🙁 I was disappointed with myself as I could have made better choices at the BBQ. It was also quite scary how easily I could go back to eating sugar.

However on a brighter note I spent yesterday reading up on fasting. I downloaded the book “The complete guide to fasting: Heal your body through intermittent, alternate day and extended fasting” by Dr Jason Fung and Jimmy Moore. Absolutely fascinating and definitely worth a read, especially if you want to understand the impact of insulin on the body and the health benefits we can achieve through fasting. They also acknowledge the benefits of LCHF diets, including MMs 5:2 program. I would not have looked twice at this book 12 weeks ago, but after my success with BSD I think I was in the right headspace to read it. I loved the simplicity of the writing and the message and decided on the spot to give it a go! So my last meal was breakfast yesterday morning! I’m now at the end of my first full day of fasting (4 “mealtimes” down 🙂 )and it’s been an eye opener. I thought I’d be starving and chewing my arm off, but not at all. Apart from a slight headache which came and went during the day and the odd tummy grumble, it’s been surprisingly easy so far. My blood sugar readings have been beautifully stable all day. I’ve been clear headed and had normal energy levels and I’ve done my 10000+ steps for the day. I have no plan or target for how long I’ll keep going, but that’s the beauty of it. As long as I feel good and don’t need to eat, I just won’t. I know that will sound completely bonkers to many people but I also know there are other fasters on the forums who will understand 🙂

There are certain foods that have been shown to fight joint pain. Adding those foods to your diet will help ease the symptoms of the disease. If you experience conditions that share joint pain and inflammation, then it may be due to arthritis. So it will be best to include anti-inflammatory foods in your diet and limit the foods that may trigger joint pain. Overall, you should aim for a diet that’s high in fruits, vegetables, fish, nuts, legumes, and olive oil. Limit or avoid red meat, dairy, saturated fats, and sugar to help prevent the pain. Find out the foods which are to be avoided and the ones which should be consumed to stay pain free. Take a look at this blog- http://www.coloncleansetoronto.ca/blog/general-category/2150/ . Hope this helps. All I say is embrace a healthy diet and exercise as much as you can.

Fasting blood being higher is due to something called the dawn effect, where the sugar dump comes overnight from the bodies stores. There has been quite a lot of discussion on it in Bill’s ‘this has to work for me’ thread. I seem to remember it was a good thing showing that visceral fat was going.

  • Interesting post, thank you, I want to discuss self testing today with my diabetic nurse as I am also away from home for long periods. Don’t know what she will think of the BSD either, last time I saw her she advised me to eat anything I liked but just not so much. I’ve lost a kilo already since the 2nd so hopefully she will be impressed today.
I don’t know anything about what results I should be looking for so hopefully she will advise, as others have said my GP and diabetic nurse rely on the 3 monthly blood test.

  • Morning all

I hope everyone is feeling fabulous today. I was back at work yesterday (although I did work in the ‘break’ but you can’t count that is it is SO quiet) and back on plan – and had the carb headache to prove it! It staggers me how withdrawing from carbs can affect you so much – I had a really long think about how poisonous it must be and vowed to plan the maintenance stage of this journey thoroughly!

I haven’t weighed since Monday so I don’t know if being back on plan is working – but I did have a delicious meal last night of slow roasted lamb, braised red cabbage and brocolli (all leftovers) and it tasted absolutely delicious – maybe it was the headache, or the fact that I was starving but I really do prefer something like that to carb laden rubbish, which had been my diet for a few days before that!

Anyway, I wish you all a successful day, thanks for posting!

  • That sounds very helpful, I will look at MyFitnessPal more closely, I am not great with this tech stuff.

I also found on MyFitnessPal that it adds calories to my daily total for exercise which I don’t want at the moment but can’t see to disable ! If anybody knows how please let me know.

    Thanks againxx

  • raintoday – great results.

I don’t know if you test your own blood sugars.

I move around the country a lot because of work so have experienced a variety of doctors. Some have been fantastic while others were avoided unless absolutely necessary. These days most want diabetics to rely on the HbA1c test to monitor their diabetes. But they also want patients to be proactive in their care. Then won’t prescribe test strips for patients to see how different foods affect their blood sugars. So – how can patients be proactive if they aren’t given the tools? Oh – the reasons given for not advising diabetics to self test? It hurts and can make patients depressed! But what about the effects of poorly controlled diabetes? Btw – a small pinprick is all it is, and personally I’d sooner do that test than risk serious problems. And keeping tight control (for me) is better, less stressful or depressing, than waiting for the results of the occasional HbA1c with ever increasing numbers.

If you don’t already self test, and your doctor just wishes the occasional HbA1c, you may want to get a test meter and keep an eye on things yourself. I learned that I had to do it myself, often in spite of the medical professionals rather than with their support.

Hope this helps. Best wishes for whatever you decide to do.

  • Sounds about right M. I tend to have a rough setting in MFP of carbs – 40g, fat – 40g and protein – 70g but if I go over 800cals as long as its fat and protein I still find I lose.

You can set these limits in MFP without paying for premium and I just discovered that if you turn the phone sideways when in the diary it shows you a breakdown of the C/F/P in each food, meal and for the day.

  • Hi Jande9,

Thank you I took the carb count from an online counter, I am using MyFitnessPal but not premium user so not showing carb count. I actually live in rural Spain and checking the label it says 10g per 100 but on chic peas it also says fibre so not really sure what rules apply here.

It confusing but must be working I just checked the scales and am delighted to say I have lost 4lbs in 2 days, that’s so good for me as I have had my thyroid removed and struggle to lose, feel very motivated now.

Thanks again and hope everybody is doing well and getting healthy xx

  • DAY 2 … WEEK 2

    Good morning

At least I slept last night ! I think if I eat meat, which I don’t do often, I find it difficult to sleep. Not sure it’s very digestible. Have no trouble dropping off its just the waking in the night then tossing and turning!

Good to see so many people getting back on track. I think it must be the ‘silly season’ again. I watched, part of, the Diet program on C4 last night. Why I don’t know. Must just be habit to see if there is a new ‘miracle’ out there when I know we’ve already found it! Who really wants to take ice baths or drink ‘bone broth’ two days a week when we can eat the great food we do.

There was also an article in the Mail yesterday about sugar. I’m not a great fan of the paper but I do think their ‘health’ articles are often quite good. Anyway, it set out the ‘science’ of eating carbs/sugar and their effect on insulin production etc. The message is coming through but it’s still such a slow trickle. One day ……

Well will try the ‘kalettes’ today if I can get them. I have to be honest kale has never appealed to me but then I’m not a huge fan of vegetables. Looks like aubergine is the new ‘wonder’ vegetable for this year but maybe ‘kalettes’ will be there at the top as well.

    Have a good day.

Hi Solange, that’s great news well done 🙂

Just did a test – my fasting blood is 7.2! HOW can it be 7.7 2 hours after – 6.7 3 hours after but 7.2 12 hours after!? is the metformin meant to keep it lower?

I am officially confused and now more determined than ever to bring that level down.

  • LinD, thank you for your input. I quite enjoy intermittent fasting, but have bought into the “breakfast is the most important meal” advice. It makes sense though, since starting BSD some mornings (not today!) I just don’t feel hungry. I’ll try it and see how it affects me. Thanks again.

Good to see so many of us getting back into the swing. I’m quite near my ultimate weight goal, about 4lbs away, so for me this way of life is now about health and medical issues, keeping T2 db at bay, lowering blood pressure, doing all I can lifestyle-wise to remain cancer free (six years so far) and generally looking after myself. It’s very empowering!

BfitB, I love walking too, but have a mini-rebounder for those inclement days, a few minutes here and there soon adds up, waiting for the kettle to boil, tv ad breaks etc.

All the best to everyone on the BSD road. Happy Wednesday… and let’s hear it for The Kalettes.. yay!

You have done so well with your weight loss and A1c. Here in the UK the norm is to have an Hba1c once or twice a year. I haven’t asked for one more often so I don’t know if they would do it.

Your pancreas must be working much better now to get your good A1c results. Have you been able to decrease your metformin?

Tigs – I still weigh my food and its great when you can be open about it.

I am back at work today but am looking forward to it as I have had a lovely time over the holidays.

  • Morning Butterlover and other Aussie friends! At least when it’s cold here in Wales, and trust me it IS cold this morning, minus 4 at the moment, we can put on extra clothes and get outside for our exercise. It’s not often that I envy everyone else with their central heating, but today I do! But there’s not a lot you can do in that heat! You have my sympathies!

A swim before breakfast sounds nice though! Enjoy the day everyone.
The kalettes were nice enough stir fried with some garlic and anchovies, btw. The turkey burgers? Meh, not so good.

    Day four.

Today, I am going to do something strange , alone on the bed.

I am going to use the support and softness of the bed to have a go at yoga positions.
Lying on the bed, and lifting one leg up to the ceiling, gently drawing a circle in the sky. It doesn’t matter if it is more of an oval. Or has square corners. It doesn’t matter if it is only a few inches or miles wide.
It doesn’t matter if you can do only one lap or several.
Don’t forget to do both sides otherwise you will look like red hell boy.
Try lying down on your back and lifting your bum off the bed, I think it looks like a table. Two seconds is achievable and something we can build on
. How about moving your arms from your sides and then over your head, touching the headboard, and gently back.

Eating, today, I am going to have 350 calories for lunch.
But Lucia, your maths is all wrong.
    350 lunch 350 dinner. That’s 700 and we haven’t mentioned breakfast.
If you know me, you know I do things gradually. Able to cope and handle it. I can maintain it for longer then.

Mentally, anyway, I have got over laughing about the sprouts.
Guess what I am ready to do now?
I am waiting for the first snowdrop then crocus. They are on the way. Go into the garden or field or park. And just stand still. You can hear a noise, a weird one. I straining noise. As the snowdrops are growing and pushing through the soil.
It may take a few weeks, but it doesn’t matter. I am outside and looking for the first signs of spring.
    Enjoy the freshness.

You going to give it a go?

    Have a great day four.
    Love Lucia

  • Hi Everyone , Its 40 degrees in Perth today, so I’m locked in till after 4pm when it’s supposed to cool down. The last few days have been a bit challenging with the heat. I managed to get to the beach for a quick dip before 8am, after that Its too hot.So i haven’t done my steps. Yesterday my weight was up .3kg for the second day plus BGL was 6.9.So I really needed to stop snacking even on BSD foods. It worked. today my weight is the same 84.7kg and fasting BGL is 5.9. I’ve decided to check my bloods a lot for a few days with the plan is no food if BGL is above 6.
I’m focused on keeping busy and lots of water. It seems to be not fair that I can’t go out because of the heat and all of you in UK are house bound by the cold.I hope all of you suffering with colds and flu will feel better soon, cheers

  • Love your wisdom BfitB470 – turning stumbling blocks into stepping stones. Indeed we all need to do so.

Had a successful day today – trying to get back to the routine even though we still have guests staying. I was upfront at dinner and said had to weigh my food…and that we were eating ‘early’ cos I was not eating between meals and I was hungry at 6pm. It was just to my son and his girlfriend but at least now I don’t have to try hide my measuring etc. They were totally fine with it. The Routine is so key to me. Cara54, bring on the weekend when you are back to yours too.
