It could still be the stubborn carb flu hanging round. You do definitely need to drink enough water and have enough salt also as this can have this effect. How much water do you think you are drinking?

You may also find that this is a bit of anaemia. I found that after 8 weeks.

    Hello Chubbs1975 ๐Ÿ™‚
When I was doing the first 8 weeks, I found that I had the following snacks:
Babybel – carb free and nibbled slowly is a good use of the 70cal
20g of any kind of nuts, pistachio, hazelnut, pine nut, almonds (raw unsalted)
30g any kind of cheese cubed
    Couple of slices of salami
    1 square very dark chocolate
    90g full fat yoghurt
Of course you can have vegetable sticks with 25g hummus but I can’t really have raw vegetable (annoying) so I often forget to think of it for others

    Hello Everyone
Started off with a glum moment, when I weighed at half a pound more today than yesterday, but I’m resolved not to let it derail me.

Have already done a short session on the rower this morning and am planning to do at least three more short bursts before the end of the day. Was surprised to find that there are no real aches and pains from the two short sessions yesterday, TC but my arms were tiring quicker this morning.

Well done on seeing off the Christmas weight, Mixnmatch. We all need to tweak the BSD to suit our own bodies. I know if I don’t stick within the calorie allowance the weight loss won’t happen, so I’m sticking with the 800 until I get down to target.

Hope the scales are kind on the next weigh in Cleverblond. That little blip probably won’t have any affect on your results.

Anyway, I am being super strict today, as I have birthday meals coming up this w/e. So, I’m having miso this morning and will try to keep cals well below the 800 today, to give me a bit more scope in the next three days. Wish me luck, as I need to see something positive on the end of week weigh in on Monday morning.

Good luck everyone …. keep going and let us know what progress you are making.

So, three days down. My fasting blood sugar has already come down 4.5 points and I’ve had to tweek my meds.
I’m about 2.5kgs down and feel ok.
And not sure if it’s a real side effect or not but my eyes feel clearer and I feel my vision is better
I get tired and hungry mid-afternoon and the temptation for a cake is immense.
I’m weighing ALL my food and calculating the calories, and in the main sticking to between 8-900 calories a day.
My starting blog post is up for anyone who would like to see how it doing https://cookeatexplore.wordpress.com/2017/01/09/the-start and I’m posting bits daily on my instagram @_twohungrymen

Any ideas around snack would be gratefully received

Californiagirl – I agree that “almost” is the operative word. I absolutely love this way of eating and will never go back to eating how I did before – but still need to log my food every day on fat secret and weigh myself every day also or I am sure that I would easily slip back into “over-exuberant” eating very easily. Before when I dieted I was either on a diet or eating normally – which meant I always put the weight back on – this is the first time that I have ever done maintenance.

  • Cara54
That is definitely progress. I still find it amazing that your tastes change if you keep off the bad stuff. I have coffee at a cafe with an amazing range of cakes which you have to queue up alongside while waiting to be served. In the past they would have been a huge temptation (and they were at the beginning of the BSD) but now I can queue quite happily alongside them without being tempted to eat them at all.

I love not being tempted. Since last May I haven’t had one bite of the bad stuff because I just don’t want to have to go through all those cravings for sweet stuff again. Of course there is also the other issue of my phobia about the lucentis injections into my eye. Any thoughts that a piece of cake would be lovely completely disappear when I think of those injections.

Natalie – daughters make wonderful diet police. When I started the BSD one of my daughter’s lectured me on the perils of yoyo dieting (which I have done so many times in the past) and that I should really be thinking of going on a healthy diet for life. Both daughters are really impressed that I have done this on the BSD and although they are not overweight they are now incorporating BSD guidelines into their own diets.

  • Hello all! I hope everyone is well, or at least improving if unwell.

NATALIE, I hope your daughter finds relief from her probs. I have quite a few gluten sensitive relatives and it is only recently that I have realised am also better without gluten. Back in Sept/Oct before I started BSD I ate bread for the first time in a while – I hadn’t been avoiding it particularly, it just hadn’t been in my meal plans – boy, did I suffer – bloating, pain, sluggishness etc. Being gluten free on BSD has confirmed my suspicions and I plan to stay away from wheat, barley and rye for ever.

Take care everyone, happy BSD Thursday!

Day 12 for me just finishing
Lost 6cm off my belly button measurement
Makes a difference with work shirts !!

Think I lost a lot of water in week 1 so wil see how scales go on Sunday

What I do know from fasting is that you can look like you’ve lost not much on Day 3 of a week and by Day 7 you’ve lost 2kg

Had beautiful cauliflower, leek and garlic soup today with chilli sauce on, such low calories as well

  • Morning check in, day 4 for me and I have lost another 2 pounds, so 7 pounds in 3 full days of fasting, how much is water? I don’t know, and don’t actually care. 28 ish more pounds to go for me to be at target!

At this rate am hoping that I can move to maintenance in 6 weeks rather than 8, hoping for lots of positives for all of you today

    Mocnk x

  • I’ve been finding school holidays difficult with two kids at home – two weeks to go! – but my daughter has suddenly become the diet police. She’s nearly 13, and since Monday has been on a gluten-free diet to see if that helps a few problems she’s been having. I don’t remember exactly what I said, but apparently I promised to do it with her! Of course I shouldn’t be eating that kind of food anyway, but sometimes I’m weak. She looked so disappointed in me when I was going to have some crackers with my cheese that I had to put them away again.

  • Mixnmatch thank you so much for sharing that. I found reading it very moving – got quite emotional! As the details show you are like the rest of us – working hard to find a way that can fit in with your reality, facing set backs, fiddling around with what you do. Yet the overriding thing is YOU DO NOT GIVE UP. To this day, it would seem. That is what is inspiring. Well done you, I hope I can find such determination. The fact that you have had blips and “real life” moments makes your success even more impressive – and helps me to feel it is do-able. My problem has always been the set back – they have made me give up, feeling either “I can’t do/sustain THIS” or “it just doesn’t work long term as a diet”. So many diets work for a bit. So few continue to work to get you to your goal. I am doing 800 every day, skipping breakfast. The book says to change it up after 8 weeks but I worry that anything less (5:2 or 3:4) would slow the loss or possibly grind it to a halt. What has been others’ experience of that? Thanks so much for sharing your amazing story. You are doing so well.

A bit of odd palpitations as well…Is it just me or anyone else getting this.Almost a fluttering effect.

  • Angela, I feel you, I totally love mince pies, only homemade ones, I add marzipan to mine, hoping by next Xmas I will be allowed the occasional carb rich treat like that, can’t imagine life otherwise!

Today I have to confess, has gone well,.within 800 cals but I have had 240ml of shiraz tonight, slightly worrying now, that it might upset the applecart, but we shall see I suppose!

I had yogurt, berries and Chia and toasted nuts for breakfast, half a carton of broccoli and Stilton soup and a few macadamias and grilled chicken and portobello mushroom.salad for dinner, plus the wine and a decaf coffee with single cream. Feels positively decadent! Bedtime now, night peeps.

  • Thanks for the support and advice Californiagirl. I know that getting and keeping active will be key to this. I have to admit to becoming something of a hermit in winter…I hate the cold dark months, but feeling particularly slug like at the mo so am going to make a concerted effort to move more in a few days when the initial effects have worn off. Love the idea of pampering and think that would be a real boost so will have a look into it…will have to wait till payday as I’m a post Christmas pauper at the mo!๐Ÿ™

  • Fifi and Flo (love the name!) …This is my third day on the diet and I have to say keeping busy at work definitely helps…it’s definitely the twitchy fingers in the evening I need to watch. I plan to have my first weigh in on Friday and fingers crossed I will have lost a decent amount. Feeling very upbeat and positive at the mo!

The first time I tried 5:2 I must have done the same and after great initial weightloss ended up putting it back on again. The second time was just prior to me discovering the BSD and was more successful, although only because I counted on non fast days just as zealously as fast days, having set an average calorie deficit that would give me the speed of weightloss I needed. I moved to BSD 5:2 on the same principle and again lost weight very steadily. I really think 5:2 not counting on the non fast days can only be a success if you go low carb and have already educated yourself about desirable portion sizes.

  • I don’t think BSD was around when I got to my heaviest ever over Christmas 2014 and decided I had to do something about it. I was 18 stone 11, having trouble stepping into the bath to have a shower, breathless when I reached the top of the stairs, just finding some of my size 20 clothes unwearable and having to consider a whole new size 22 wardrobe (some clothes were already there). I did two things. I started the 5:2 diet (without the book, so wasn’t counting on non fast days) and I joined a local community sport group called ‘I wish I’d tried’ which gave taster sessions of sport and fitness sessions at the local gym without you actually having to join, at ยฃ1 a session, complete with a coach/trainer. I lost around three stone in 2015, but 5:2 fizzled out a bit in the latter half of the year, and by the time I got to last January I had put a stone back on. I guess you could call that a break, although not a deliberate one. In January I got a book from a library sale, the 17 day diet, and tried that, I also read about Sirt foods at the same time and tried to incorporate as many of them as I could. The weight came off quite well during the first 17 days (very much like BSD) slowed down in the second 17 days (Re-introduce some foods) and stopped completely in the third (back on the white stuff) so I switched back to 5:2. Still using Sirt foods though, I used 600 rather than 500 for fast days and 1840 calories on non fast days and counted all days. I found the BSD in April, read the forum and decided to change to BSD 5:2. Fast days were 800 and non fast days 1600, I still lost weight just as fast even though I was still overeating carbs a little at that point. I started watching carbs as well in late May, moved to 4:3 Getting impatient! A major milestone was fitting into a size 18 fitted dress at the end of June on my birthday. I had bought it in the January sales, as a ‘target’. July was an actual planned break. I had my birthday celebrations including cake and lots of wine and prosecco, then a week later we went to France camping for a week, beer and bread, I tried not to overdo it, but over that couple of weeks put six pounds back on. The end of July and all of August it was back to 4:3 BSD then September 2:5 BSD with just the weekends on 1600. October and November were the full 800 fast. December was technically back to 4:3 to minimise the damage, and from 23rd December to 2nd January was essentially another planned break. The bounce back from the end of my 8 weeks fast to 2nd January was 10 pounds, 8 of which have now gone again as of this morning suggesting a lot of them were water.

I still visit the forum not only because it helps me stay focused on why I am doing this, but also because when I was a newbie I got so much information from the people who had been doing it before me, I hope I can pass on some tips and assure you all that I am no more gifted with willpower than anyone else. I have simply now found ‘my’ way of eating, that I know will be sustainable to my goal weight and beyond into maintenance.

  • HI everyone

I’ve been catching up with all the posts and everyone is doing amazingly well. I managed to do a 22.5 hour fast from dinner time Monday till dinner time Tuesday. Now doing another one approximately 19 hours until tomorrow lunch time. I find it quite easy to do that length of time but I’m breaking myself in gently. For anyone taking medication it would be best to get advice from a sympathetic doctor. As far as I am aware I’m not diabetic but I’m sure that too much sugar is at the heart of my history of weight gain/loss.

Tonight at dinner a colleague had a waffle with ice cream and chocolate sauce. I sat with her while she was eating it and it didn’t bother me at all. That is progress!!!!!

Seen off the Christmas weight now, and back at BMI 25.0 so overweight (just). I have increased my average calories although I will be still including some fast days, as I don’t want to lose muscle and was starting to get concerned I would be at the level I was on. I expect to lose the final weight much slower now, but at only about 8 pounds to go I can take that. Just got to make sure it is still going down. Very nice to see so many of us are so close to our final goal.

I am talking to you, yes you. I know you have been reading my blog and laughing at me and thinking I am nuts.
Just make sure I am a macadamia nut. Less carbs less cold,
And not cashew, loads of carbs and loads of cals.

So you going to tell me how’s it going?
You want to do so much, but you can only deal with one minute at a time. I know.

You should only now be getting the hang of things, learning to do it , taking baby steps.
    But
Have you noticed, the baby steps are taking you forwards and not backwards?

    Keep going, keep positive.

Or you can just work on the principle that staying on anything like 800 calories a day then you will eventually lose weight/inches. The body is a complex and resilient structure and it will take some time to adapt to a new regime. Overthinking it will probably not help.

  • Hovering to and fro between 9 st 12 and 9 st 13 at the moment. I know I need to get a bit more hardcore if these last few pounds are going to go! Bit of a blip earlier today but had my main meal as a late lunch and have decided to have coffee with cream and see it through until the morning.

I am keen to keep going and have enjoyed having a few people to journey with. I haven’t really stuck to the 8 week diet, just shifted my intake to protein and avoided complex carbs (most of the time). I find weighing and counting very hard to stick to, so just eat to the principles of 8 week diet and enjoy the lack of cravings and hunger that comes with the higher fat/protein diet. and I still get to enjoy tasty food which is important to me. Portion sizes are naturally reduced and lack of hunger/sweet tooth protects me from eating crap between meals. I have gone on losing weight little by little, so now 9kg down and want to continue this with the aim of losing another 14kg over the next year (sooner if possible, but don’t want to push it too fast.) For the first time in my life, this feels attainable and sustainable. Happy to go on being part of the group.

Tonight I’m trying Protein bread- made at home using Pea protein and Whey protein, eggs, egg white and broccoli. It’s not bread- no replica sliced white here! BUT I’m using it to sandwich my burger together and it’s ok. It tastes NICE even. And although the slices are very small, 2 are very filling-in fact 1 and half or one sliced thinly would be ample. A quorn peppered steak, 30g cheddar, 25g lettuce and 3 cherry tomatoes, 2 bits of the bread all for 392 calories and I am stuffed!

    Hi Gerdmar
Not sure this helps, but I did a quick search about this and found this on the Diabeties UK website, with a quote from the Doctor who has been carrying out this research concerning the chilling of cooked pasta, potatoes etc.:
Dr Robertson is keen to point out her work doesnโ€™t mean we can all eat as many carbs as we like if they are cooked in this way. But these changes could help people to dramatically improve the health impact of carbs, just by the way they prepare everyday starchy foods. โ€œWeโ€™ve never said that food with more resistant starch is lower in calories,โ€ she says, โ€œBecause itโ€™s not. There will be a small calorie difference because youโ€™re getting less glucose, but itโ€™s not a huge amount, so itโ€™s not going to cure obesity.โ€

It seems that the benefit is for those who are not limiting carbs, but want to limit the impact on spiking blood sugar levels. Personally, I think the bottom line is, this is of no significance for those of us on the BSD, as we are avoiding carbs.

  • Hi hope you are all good

Hey RozyDozy, good to have you on the team. My first anniv of the BSD is about six weeks off and I’m hoping to be a smidge under 9st by then – 4lb to go (that’s 3 to get to 9st and 1 to be below, but I’d accept 0.5 to be below!). If my calculation is right, you haven’t got to shift too much, to get back in your healthy BMI, so very doable. In fact, I don’t reckon it will take you long to get back to the 9st 13lb mark.

Good luck with it and I hope to read some good results from you soon. Oh, and take care of yourself with that cold, but don’t be tempted to ‘feed it’!

Like you, I feel so much healthier and although only a couple of people have commented on my weight loss, lots of people comment on how well I look.

    Hello all,
I’d like to join you if I may – tomorrow (12th) will be my first anniversary of starting the BSD. I rather took my foot off the pedal around Sept/Oct, then Xmas came along, the overindulgence was self-inflicted, I didn’t do quite as much exercise as I had been doing and, surprise, surprise, I’ve put on some weight so I need to get back on track. And now I’ve got a cold – at least that is making me drink more!

At my lowest I managed to get down to 9st 13lb (for one day only but it was the first time I’d been below 10st for several years). My ultimate target (to reach 9.5st) is still to be reached – I need to lose about 12lbs to achieve that.

First mini-target is to get back below 10st 2lb (which will bring me back into the Healthy section of the BMI for my height).
Then the longer term aim is to make sure I don’t go above that mark again.

    Good luck everyone!

  • Mixnmatch, wow that is some result. Congratulations.
I have been on this ‘way of life’ since the 1st October. So delighted with encouragement from this site it certainly helps me every day. I have not lost weight in vast amounts but just a lb a week mostly. Its one of the hardest things I have ever done. But I have stuck to it. I have not felt so well in years, not diabetic thankfully and can now go for a walk without my feet hurting and struggling for breath. I have not totted up how much I should weigh but I am now thinking I should.

Hi everyone attempting this, ever since I saw Mike’s TV docco on 5:2 I have done the diet every week. I think it must be over 3 years now? I initially lost a stone and a half and recently put on half a stone. My problem is, I eat enormous amounts on the down days! and now on a diet for next 8 weeks to redress this. However, I just wanted to share my experience, since doing the 5:2 (and it is hard, some days worse than others,) I feel fantastically well, my energy, according to friends and family, is massively improved, some say phenomenal – and as a 56 year old producer sometimes doing 18 hour days and masses of stress, that’s extremely welcome! Moreover, I have a great sense of wellbeing and, touch wood, have not been prey to the weakness of the prevalent chest infections I used to suffer from.- in fact I’ve only had one bout of a couple of days illness I think only for several years, that’s including colds – and yes of course it might just be chance… but I truly believe it’s the diet. I have a hideously sweet tooth but after eating a meal, my blood sugar reading was 4. 9 last month, which apparently is fine. I’m not diabetic, but this diet, if you can hold on, seems to have so many other extraordinary benefits and I just wanted to wish you all well..it’s so worth it!

  • Mixnmatch – WOW that is incredible! I can’t imagine how much willpower and determination you must have. Totally impressed and hearing your story is a hugely motivating. You must be an incredibly strong person. You prove to us that we can do it and you model the determination that we will all surely need over the coming months… Thank you.

Shelbobaggins – you sound like you are in a very similar position as me and have almost exactly the same amount to loose! Also sounds like you are taking the same approach as me (skipping breakfast). I find it extremely hard to loose weight and so far (Day 3) have lost 1 lb. I have dieted so many times over the years I think my body knows something is up and clings on to weight for dear life…. This time it won’t be a diet that needs repeating – I aim to put as much energy into ‘maintaining’ as losing the weight, if I can ever get it off. Have not deviated from plan yet, so, despite minimal loss, I am feeling saintly! I love bouillon as a breather from tea and fizzy water too.

Good luck everyone and thank you New Kathy for starting this thread.

  • Hi Fifi and Flo and Chrysalis — the grumpy, ravenous and tired thing will definitely pass. Coping strategies that worked for me were, keep really busy with any project you’ve been avoiding, sign up for a Futurelearn class or Duolingo, drink tea, coffee, water, go outside and garden, walk, talk to your neighbors, go shopping and just look at stuff or buy something small, like measuring spoons (haha very useful!!๐Ÿ˜œ), get your nails/toenails done, go through old papers and file, go to the gym, try a new product/food that is way outside your usual choices — all those helped me but IF ALL ELSE FAILS and you are miserable, eat something BSD friendly like coffee with heavy cream (measure!) or a few nuts (6-8) or a piece of really good cheese (go spend time picking a good one out).
Be extra careful to stay low carb! Maybe as low as 20 grams of carb per day until you get control of hunger. This is critical in controlling hunger.
I am one person who never “lost” their hunger on this diet but it became completely manageable after a few hard weeks and I am on maintenance/at goal since June. So hunger will not derail you — keep experimenting with your own strategies and do what works for you!!

  • Thanks Chrysalis. Today not too bad so far although am still very irritable. My poor husband ๐Ÿ˜ฌ .

I think my daughter has one of those colouring books she’s not using so may give it a go!

How’s your day been so far? How many days have you been on the diet so far?

  • Thanks ever so much for replying. Very helpful. Plus I found this by a Dr which is a bit long reading but helpful too.

Simply put, it seems that on a low GI diet, carbs are not limited as long as they are low GI/GL. But this means that insulin still has to kick-in to deal with the result of the carb in-take. So, at the end of the day, a low GI diet is not as good as the BSD for what most of us want, ie. lower blood sugar/weight loss

Sorry to go on as some people may not be interested, but i’m glad I’ve got to the bottom of it with help from you and the above link. I was getting myself in a bit of a state worrying about what to eat when I finish the 8 week menu plan. Now I know I don’t have to worry about GI. I just need to do what Dr Mosley advises regarding carbs, ie. stay away from those that are highly refined and limit the ones which are in a more natural state. Phew!

  • Hi everyone, this is Day 3 for me too and I’m surprisingly finding it a lot easier than I thought I would. I bought the book sometime last year but never started as the thought of just 800 calories a day filled me with dread. Although I’m not T2 I suspect that if I carry on as I am will end up being pre-diabetic. I have 56lbs (25kg) to get me to my ideal weight and the top-end of a healthy BMI, not sure how long that might take but I have a mini goal of end of April for my holiday in Thailand so I want to lose as much as possible before then and not look/feel like a fat blob!
I’m finding it much harder to lose weight than I did when I was younger and I get easily discouraged if the scales don’t move enough so am hoping higher losses in the first few weeks of BSD will spur me on to keep going. I’ve decided to fast till lunchtime and just have 2 meals a day saving most of my calories for dinner and so far so good. Have lost 2.2lbs so far so am happy with that, and must remember to keep up with the water intake. Am drinking fizzy water and a hot vegetable bouillon drink as when needed (12 cal per teaspoon serving) which I find helps to keep any hunger at bay.

Good luck on journey everyone, we can do it!!
