Could anybody advise on what your carb limit should be per day 50g ? 75g?
Also after the eight weeks, on maintenance what should you aim for then? The calories I understand but the carb limit would be useful. Thanks in advance.

Annie2 why not give away stray chocolate bars rather than binning them ? I gave away quite a lot of food when I started my diet. Bread from the freezer, biscuits, chocolate etc. People are usually very happy to receive it, especially if they are hard up. You could also take it to your local food bank or homeless shelter.

  • Hi All,
I was very good all weekend and tried some of Sunshine-Girls meal plans. I am pleased to say when I weighed myself yesterday I have essentially maintained my weight after the high calorie and carb slip up. Monday 23rd I was 14 st 10.7 and Today Monday 30th I am 14st 10.4lbs so a minimal loss over the course of my week.

I am disappointed because on Wednesday I got down to 14st 7lbs – BUT looking at it overall it could have been worse.

Last night I batch cooked from the book – Bolognese (170 cal/5g carbs) Lamb Tagine (420/16) Hungarian Goulash (350/27) and a Mushroom Soup (190/4) so I am hoping to have a significant loss this week!!

Thank you all for your advise!!

  • MK – change that note to self by putting on assertive confident face. When I spoke to my lovely doctor I said ‘right, this is what I am doing, you have seen my results and are happy with them but I am going to need your advice as to how I should continue with my medication. Should I reduce the insulin or the glicazides’ So I only gave him two choices, which meds to reduce. No chance for him to say stop the diet or eat more crap. His answer was ‘try to get off the insulin first’ to this I said, ‘yes but glicazide is notorious for causing very low BG so I think we need to keep an eye on that too’. I reversed our roles and it worked. He was aware that I had done my research and knew what I was talking about and he felt he was telling me what to do, although I was telling him what I was going to do anyway. I am the one in control. I know not all doctors are interested in our views but as you say, you have a role to play in your own treatment. Just remember we are the experts when it comes to our condition, we have researched and read up and made ourselves aware, doctors should be glad of that. Another thing I do is not talk about the BSD as a book or online forum, but about Prof Taylor and his research. I’ll stop there as I am on my soapbox.

    Good Morning All

I am just starting week 4. Monday is my weigh day , but I am not going to today as I lost the fight with a bar of chocolate yesterday !! It was left over from Xmas, I should really have binned it , but I find it hard to throw good food away.

As I don’t want to depress myself with numbers I am going to wait until next Monday to weigh.

To make up for my bad behaviour !! I am on a mini fast until supper tonight. I am not diabetic so all is ok. I am busy with housework & am drinking lots of water & lots of hot water with lemon in. So far I am not hungry.

I have a lot of weight to lose so don’t want to fall off the wagon yet. I also have a 6 monthly hospital appt in 2 weeks with my oncologist and really want to impress him with some weight loss.

I am interested in hearing about the flapjacks. I have made them twice & both times have ended up with bowls of granola !! Not wasted as it makes a lovely topping for yoghurt !! I am going to try again & follow the ideas on here.

I find the secret to success with the BSD is to be organised & throw away any stray chocolate bars !!

    Good luck everyone

  • Oh, Sunshine Girl. ‘They like to be asked because it makes them feel important’. You’re so right. And there was me , thinking we were partners in my care….lol, lol.

It reminds me of when I staggered in 18 months ago, he asked me what was wrong and I said I thought I had a pulmonary embolism. (I’d had one before after an op, I’d just had an op, this felt the same, but worse.) The GP said ‘well, as I’ve had 12 years of medical training, I think I’ll be the judge of that.’ After a cursory glance, he told me I had a throat infection, advised me to take ibuprofen, and sent me on my way telling me not to return within 10 days.

That weekend, I collapsed, at home, was discovered quite by chance by a neighbour as my OH was away, blue lighted to hospital and told I had multiple clots and one in my heart the size of a fist. I was put into intensive care given a 5% chance of survival. ‘Notoriously difficult to diagnose’ said my GP. ‘And to be honest you got my back up by insisting you knew what was wrong. And you did have a throat infection AS WELL, so my diagnosis wasn’t wrong, strictly speaking’.

Note to self. Practice , ‘oh, woolly headed little me and my silly worries’ face. Doesn’t come naturally, it must be said… MKx

  • Hi Mary
I was diagnosed with PMR in January 2015, put on two stone, ESR up and down and initially hard to control with Prednisolone.
I started BSD last October and lost, very slowly, nearly two stone – had lost a little more but have just had an all inclusive holiday in Cape Verde! I was prediabetic last January but my HbA1c is back to normal this month.
I have just returned from my GP and today my ESR is 10 and I am taking just one mg steroid! I hope next time to stop this awful drug.
I am convinced that this WOE has helped me rid (I hope) the PMR and I now feel healthy and free of the symptoms.
I hope you find this useful and good luck with your BSDing.
    X B

  • Morning all,

Day 1 week 4 for me, eeek how time flies! so my weigh in is typically the same as Fri/Sat so from starting weight of 13.02 (83.5kg) to 12.01 (76.7kg) which is a 15 pounds or 6.8kg loss. (8 pounds first week, and about 3.5 pounds the following 2)

So i passed one of my mini goals which was a stone lost, and very close to my next mini goal, should achieve this week which is under 12 stone.

This weekend again was no strict calorie counting, I had about 15 squares of montezumas 70% dark chocolate with sea salt and lime (DELICIOUS!) and 2 glass of white wine. But other than that, no carbs, definitely more calories, as I had bacon, sausage, egg tomato and mushroom for brunch on sat as well as 3 coffees with milk, then a subway tuna salad for dinner plus some nuts. and sunday, bacon, scrambled egg and grilled tomato brunch, followed by a pre prepared low carb veg grain pot from Co-Op plus a baby bel, a small handful of salted peanuts, plus the choc and wine.

Not been very organised food wise, so have just brought some tins of sardines and tuna into work, but need to do some shopping tonight.

Wishing you all a good week x

  • Oh MK I hate to say ‘I told you so’ no, I really hate to say it because it is such a pain in the rootytooty when you get someone who has a closed mind. If he claims it is the meds keeping your BG down then surely he should be telling you to reduce the meds not increase them. But he wants you to eat carbs in which case you would need more drugs. From my point of view, we are on this diet to reduce our BG and it is working, then we need to reduce the meds. What an (*****), I think you know what I mean. See your own doctor but emphasise that the diet is actually working in bringing down your BG and please could he advise you on your meds. They like to be asked, it makes them feel important. Just make sure you are eating enough but you have been at this for long enough to know how to look after yourself.

As for me, my BG was 4.1 this morning. As my breakfast was just spinach and raspberry smoothie in almond milk I also included a piece of chicken before I went shopping. Will be checking again this evening but I might have to reduce the insulin again. To me this is all good news and what I am doing this for. I long for the day when I can say that I don’t need any insulin, even if that means taking tablets that I am not on now – I cant take Metformin, it gives me the runs…. seriously.

The only down side is the quarter of a pound I had lost seems to have crept back but still another day to go before weighing. Keep healthy everyone and keep on keeping on…

Hi again Jacks – so you don’t cut them into the 24 pieces once cooled – you put them in the fridge first to set hard –
Aha that’s where I went wrong!
I will hunt for jumbo oats – maybe the healthfood shop has them.
By the way my husband’s eaten all of them from the fridge so I will have to make some more!!

Sarah I’m so sad to read your post & to hear about all your troubles. It is so difficult being self employed & having to rely so much on ones own resources & then having to cope with the vagaries of other people renewing or awarding new contracts. Work of course is very important to be able to keep paying the bills etc but so is your health & own well being.
I’m also sorry to hear about your brothers diagnosis & the worry about yourself & your family that brings. Your plan to eat well again on the BSD sounds positive as well as job hunting that would be a useful stop gap if you also want to keep your own business going. Please don’t lose sight of all the business skills you have & how well you have done so far even if the economy & Trump may be affecting your contract opportunities right now. There is a new financial year starting soon & the world will settle down & adapt to the temporary adverse Trump Effect. Also the chef didn’t deserve you anyway!!
Keep your chin up & stay positive & I hope February will be a much better month for you than January has been👍👍👍

    Hi SusannahD

Yes, I am in the UK. I bought a 20cm square baking tin although did make them in a slightly larger one before, which might explain the granola-type result. Perhaps having the recommended sized tin helps as the mixture is deeper. I also press down the mixture firmly and give them another 5/10 minutes on top of the recommended cooking time.

I can get 24 out of the batch without crumbling OK once they chilled down.

Yogurt sounds like a good addition!

    Hope that helps.

    Hi all,
Thanks for your congrats but I possibly celebrated too soon – suffered an even bigger upward bounce today. If I’m honest, it was self-inflicted – been feeling a bit out of kilter recently (probably stress from work) so I took solace in eating yesterday. But I have just made some coconut flatbreads and just taken delivery of a 2kg bag of chia seeds – that should keep me going (in more ways than one) for a while! 🙂
Glad to see that others are heading downwards.

Brilliant news cmawp!!!! That’s a really great loss and so close to that min-goal too – sure that will go this week. In fact, there’s every chance you could be hitting your official goal weight – fingers crossed! I’m hoping to shift that 1.2lb between me and the mini-goal, but I have a dinner out this coming week and there will be a little alcohol, so it might not happen this week.

Good to see that we all seem to be reporting losses and making progress toward our goals. Keep on doing what you’re doing everyone!

  • I’m starting today too…
I managed 4 weeks last year( losing 13lbs) then had to work away from home for a while and found it too hard to stick to this in hotels
I now have a clear 8 weeks and gonna see how well I can do… needless to say 6lbs of the weight I lost has gone back on… but I know in a week that will disappear.
I’m following the meal plan set out in the recipie book… saves me counting stuff 😊
    Good luck all xx

Well done SunnyB, good to hear that the losses are mounting. Despite the tick up from a lower weight during the week, it sounds like the main trend is in the right direction and that’s the main objective. You’re tantalisingly close to that mini goal.

I showed a 4.2lb loss for the week, so I’m very happy it wasn’t a scale blip yesterday! So pleased and thankful of that whoosh, it has really perked me up. Only 2.9lb to go until I hit my official goal weight.

As I’ve got no nice round stone barriers to break through (12 stone 8lb target), my mini-goal is 0.8lb which would see me achieve a total 70lb loss.

Hope everyone is keeping well, looking forward to hearing from you all.

    Hi Jacks –
Thanks for the tip re those flapjacks – I couldn’t find jumbo oats – are you in the UK?? What you do makes sense thank you.
But tell me how do you get 24 out of the batch? I could do 16 – anyway the rest was granola – so I thought a couple of teaspoons on yoghurt would be rather delicious.

The seedy flapjacks are a staple in my fridge. I make a batch every couple of weeks and freeze half down. My partner (non-BSD’er) is loving them too.

I also had the granola result the first time I made them. I’ve found using 100g of jumbo oats and 50g bran helps keep them together, instead of 50g jumbo/100g rolled with bran. I put them in the fridge to set properly after they’ve cooled and they’ve held together well.

    Happy flapjacking!

Hello everyone, I’m from a drizzly UK. I started on 21 January so I’m behind most of you. Congratulations on some good results. Just a few questions from me as my weight loss is slow despite low calorie.

I am 10 days in doing the BSD 800 and lost 3.5 lbs, much less than most of you in early diet. I have been stuck for a few days. Waist is down 2 inches though. I have 65 lbs to lose. Mini goal is a holiday to Spain in April when I hope to be down 20 lbs. I’m divorced and live alone. It’s easier in some ways as I don’t have to shop and cook for others, but harder in that I have no support.

    1. I realised I wasn’t drinking enough water, so read up on all that last night on here and on the web. Ouch ! This morning a big headache as if I had been on the red wine last night ! (I’m not drinking any alcohol for 8 weeks). I was peeing a lot yesterday and was sure I would get a big loss today, but just lost 0.4lbs. Today I will get my full 2 litres down and see what happens. Any thoughts ?
    2. I also realised my carb count is too high. I’m averaging 70g when it should be under 50. The extra carbs are all from vegetables (I’m not eating any from below ground but some are still quite high) which seems unfair, but I’m planning to cut down on veg and increase the fat. This goes against all we have been taught, but I’m going to try. Will this help ? Any tips ?
    3. Finally, I’m not exercising as I should. I have MS and can’t walk far, tend to fall and get injuries so have to be careful when out on my own. I also get fatigue. This is no excuse I know, and I need to do an exercise DVD. It’s ready to go, but not done it yet ! I must build that in to my routine from today ! How much has exercise contributed to your losses those of you with big reductions ? I feel like my journey will be slow and long !

    Best Wishes all

Yay way to go RozyDozy!!!! Great news! Congratulations on reaching that mini-goal, you must be so happy and justifiably pleased with yourself.

Hope your weigh-in goes well cmawp. That was an impressive whoosh, so should hopefully be good news for you today.

I came in at 1.2lb less than this time last week. My scales have shown a bounce back from the lowest registered weight this week, but this seems to be normal, so I’m not stressing. I am hopeful of hitting my mini-goal at the next weekly weigh-in – just 1.2lb to go now to get to 9st dead. Then I’ll be setting my sights on pushing below that – not decided yet, what to set as the next mini-goal though – prob 8st 11lb.

Think the nutri-ninja breakfasts are helping – the increased fibre certainly seems to be aiding bowel function.

Looking forward to reading everyone else’s results. Good luck for a good week too – keep going everyone, we’ll soon be looking at moving to maintenance!

    Hi Theodora,

I have always been a “hot” person but the BSD really hit me with how cold I felt even in a mild Autumn. For me it lasted six to eight weeks, but then I upped the exercise and that seems to have reset my system. I still do feel colder in my hands than I used to, but equally my hands feel “slimmer”, so maybe it’s a insulation thing.

So for me there was a light at the end of the tunnel.

    Good luck

    Hi all

We are all doing so well aren’t we!!!

Today was a massive milestone for me, its week 4, day 7 and i have hit my stone and entered the next stone bracket!! 13st13lbs!

That’s 14lbs in 28 days. I am so so happy. I was laying in bed last night thinking that my losses were slowing but I have lost 3lbs this week. That is a rate I like. I have been weighing myself every day and I am seeing the patterns emerging and I am aware of my body. I stay the same for a few days then have whoosh and lose 1-2, then stay the same for a few and then whoosh again. It seems to have been steady that way for the 4 weeks I have been doing this and long may it continue!

Onwards and downwards as they say – I have 18 days until I fly out on holiday – lets see whether I can get to 13st6lbs which is my mini goal for holiday… It’s going to be tight but I’m going to try!!!

Hope you are all well – much love from a grey, drizzly England!!!

Hi all – good morning! Foggy and grey outside – SO looking forward to the first signs of spring! Out walking today at 6:30 – the dogs needed to go, I certainly didn’t! but it means I’m already 4,000 steps in for today.

Still on a fast from 11am yesterday morning – although I had to sample a couple of mouthfuls of cake yesterday as we were trying to order our wedding cake, which we’ve not done – PEAK!

Weight is also down another pound since last Tuesday – PEAK but even better, my OH dropped 4lbs this week!

My only pit at the moment is I can’t get warm!! – it’s not particularly cold today either – is wearing a wooly hat in the office a step too far?

JM – congrats on the 11 miles – that time will come down I’m sure – keep it up! We are off to the Peaks at the end of February so maybe I’ll make time to spend a day walking – with frequent rest stops for our very short legged pooches lol

Have a good, peak filled day all x

I have about one square a week so I don’t think I really fit the criteria for your challenge but I’m happy to cheer you on and to be honest, the office where I work is full of the stuff constantly and as Easter gets closer I know I’ll find it harder to resist – got for it and good luck!!!

  • Morning all from rainy South Wales. Jeez, it’s horrible out there today! The dog is hiding under my duvet, pretending he can’t hear me getting ready for our walk, so I’ll give him another 5 minutes.

That’s great Daisiesmum, how lovely to be able to pass on the word, as it were! I have a (slender) friend who always wants to know all about the BSD but am aware of the others (less slender) rolling their eyes, so I have to play it down a bit. I am aware I can come across as smug!

Out of interest (well, of interest to me anyway) I had the apple and porridge breakfast from the recipe book yesterday as a treat. I haven’t had porridge since I started back in April. It was yummy! I rather undid the good work for the rest of the day by eating half a tub of mascarpone. That’s over 500 calories!!!! Took about 2 minutes to eat. However, I still maintained/lost a couple of ounces so I’m happy.

Not exactly a well balanced diet nor a good relationship with food though!

    Happy Monday everyone.

  • Lovely to read your posts again Verano. Hope you’re well and truly on the mend. I’ve cooked the pork in mustard sauce several times. Really lovely. I find it helpful when other suggest recipes. Sometimes good to be told what to eat!
    Other suggestions will be welcomed!
Have put on weight after a good weekend so here I go again! But I will get there.

  • Well, my GP (locum) says I should stop the diet and up the meds if necessary because ‘850 calories and no starch isn’t healthy for anyone, and especially not a diabetic’. sigh*. He also said it would be the drugs, not the diet, that’s brought my blood glucose down and stable.

I’m not going to be doing that, but will leave out the glicozide today and test regularly through the day to see what’s what. Own (more supportive) GP back from hols on Thursday. Not easy, this…MKx

Wow it’s crazy that you guys are basking in the heat over there and it’s just well cold and wet here 😥, though it sounds ridiculously hot atm!

Day 1 of week 4 (wow already!) and I’m 9.6lbs down with a loss of 3.8lbs this week which I’m quite pleased with. Think I had a mini-whoosh overnight as it was 1.2lbs on the scales this morning. Feeling really positive that this WOE is working for me and I’m hoping if I continue through maintenance that’s goodbye to GERD and the need for PPIs.

Apologies in advance men, but I note that some ladies have reported their menstrual cycle restarting after a long time whilst on BSD, have any ladies experienced the opposite (I tried to search forum)? I have regular cycles but am a week late so far, although my partner and I are also trying to conceive got a negative pregnancy test yesterday 😥 so am wondering whether it’s due to BSD and hormones?

  • Morning all – maintaining nicely (actually a pound off but that’s fine for me as I do tend to fluctuate quite a bit). Did a bit of experimental fasting this weekend which was surprisingly easy, and I got LOADS done as I saved myself about 3 hours of cooking, eating and clearing up! Wedding invites ordered, guest list prepped, wedding cake ordered, disco playlist started – it’s all coming together….now for an outfit – not as easy as you’d think!!!

Also went for a swim, four walks (with the dogs) and some HIIT while I was waiting for the kettle to boil on the several cups of herbal tea I had!

Have a good day all xx

  • Good morning all, I hope everyone is enjoying their maintenance journey. I had a tremendous day yesterday, when I arrived at my friend’s house for lunch, she was waiting with an array of ingredients ready and asked me if I would show her how to cook a BSD friendly meal!!! I was thrilled, there was also nuts and cheese to snack on later! I was able to explain a bit about BSD without bombarding them with information – the evidence speaks for itself!

    Happy BSD Monday everyone.

  • Well I don’t come on here for two days and I’ve missed LOADS – sorry about that. Just trying to catch up.

So well done to all those of you who are upping exercise, frantically counting carbs and seeing weight loss on the scales, that’s brilliant news!
For those who are struggling with hypos (man!) gains and water retention, well today is a brand new day, another day to sort everything out and try again, whether that be grabbing yet another glass of water, trying to find that perfect balance with meds, or going back to the counting board with carbs, I wish you good luck and happy BSD-ing.

‘Officially’ I dropped 4.25lbs this week (I have a little red book and I log my Monday weight every week – nothing else counts – really) so am delighted, am 4.5lbs lower than my original target, and 1.5lbs from my revised target. I fasted from 7pm on Friday to 7pm on Saturday and then from 11am yesterday but I’m not really counting that as I had to test cake yesterday in order to order our wedding cake so that’s done and it was lovely – chocolate, carrot and lemon & coconut for us 🙂

Have a great day all xxx

  • sunshine-girl, there’s honey and there’s honey. A lot of supermarket honey is from bees fed sugar at some point during the year, usually winter because the beekeeper has taken so much of their honey that they need to be fed sugar to keep them alive. Honey that does not come from nectar doesn’t contain all the trace elements of what I call ‘real’ honey. Plus, the processing can vary quite a lot. Some honey is heated to make it flow quicker from the comb, thereby likely damaging those valuable trace elements, and most commercial honey is spun at high speeds in what is little more than a centrifuge to release it from the combs, thereby exposing it to a lot of oxygen, affecting its flavour and probably the trace elements.

bloke41, it sounds like you’ve got fantastic honey there. Me, I’m a wannabe beekeeper!

    Hi SusannahD
Nearly 7pm here now and still 35 deg outside! Going to be another scorcher tomorrow as well. Ah well, lucky I don’t work tomorrow either, just have to spend it around the pool again!😀

It’s funny, but I’m only just starting to get used to how my body looks now, I kept walking past mirrors and thinking ‘that can’t be me’! Especially when it happened so quickly. I’ve gone from a 16 to a size 8 and had to buy a complete new wardrobe, right down to the bras and undies! There’s no way I’m going to go back to eating sugar and carbs again, even for Christmas and my birthday a couple of weeks ago, I ate BSD friendly food!
This had to be a lifestyle change forever because if we go back to eating the way we did before then we’ll go back to looking the way we did.
Hope tomorrow is not too hot for everyone on the East Coast.
    Cheers
    Linda

  • Good morning everyone and good luck to Gillykins, nmulcahy, pennant, heath, Kitty Malne MJ49, Ren65, juju68, ciaobella and Alexandra uk and all those starting today (like me).

I have raging tonsillitis today so not feeling in the best of moods. On the upside the thought of eating is currently filling me with dread so that may help me on my first day.

Today’s fasting BSL: 8.7. However yesterday it was 7.7. I may not have fasted as long or as well – I can’t remember if I took strepsils in the night so not the best reading probably.

I also want to lose a lot of weight as I have a *lot* to lose so will be tracking weight loss on a daily basis and centimeter loss on a weekly basis.

However, primary and immediate goal here is to follow the plan like the doc suggested so I don’t have to go on metformin, statins and more. The more I read about diabetes, the more I can see how it’s been affecting me for the last year and I know I will feel better once my BSL drops into a normal range.

Jmarie: super blood results. I’m so pleased that they turned out fine especially as you were so concerned about them. And keeping within the BSD framework as well it all deserves a celebration…some nice clothes? a manicure? pedicure? Time for a reward!

These days it seems that it’s not just the weekends that go quickly…I just wish time would slow down a little, I never seem to have enough.

JulesMaigret; the 26 miler sounds impressive. I’m really pleased I signed up for the 1,000 mile walk because it gets me moving but my daily walks are still in single figures. The tax? well, what can I say, it’s one of the two certain things…

My peak for yesterday: a super wonderful walk along the promenade finishing with a coffee on the terrace of a lovely restaurant. The sun was warm and the sea blue.

The pit: I’ve become reacquainted with the 300g I lost the other day. And I know exactly why. I have to, really have to track my calories. I don’t know why I don’t…just laziness, I suppose. I must be accountable. (need to write that 100 times!)

It’s Monday, the beginning of a new week….have a good day!

  • Hi Julia …… no IV antibiotics are no fun especially when thy wake you up at 1am to give you another dose!! Amazing what a bite can do! No idea where mine came from just glad it’s on it’s way out now. Really pleased though to be back in my own bed which I’m sure will help with my recuperation.

Sunshine-girl …. I am taking it as easy as I can!! To be honest the antibiotics I’m on now are knocking me out so not much choice but to take things easy! Funny how, even in hospital, I was aware of BSD eating!! It must be so ingrained now that I was making reasonably good choices when I could. Just pleased to get back to ‘real’ food again. I’m going to try the ‘pork in a mustard sauce’ that you speak of but use chicken instead. Sounds like a nice easy recipe. Need inspiration at the moment. I think I’m in a rut eating the same few meals over and over. May start a new thread!!!!!
