Hello, have you tried chia seeds? They are fab in a smoothie (if you have a device like a bullet thingy to smash them to bits – otherwise it’s not a very smooth smoothie!) or sprinkled on a salad. They are very filling because they swell up inside plus they are extremely nutritious, low carb and high in fibre! Here’s a link which gives more info. Hope it helps. https://authoritynutrition.com/11-proven-health-benefits-of-chia-seeds/

“There is one sentence I have heard many times over when listening to doctors: ‘I don’t believe in…’.
But medicine is not theology: it is not for us to believe or not believe. We simply need to study the evidence – and when it comes to gluten, the evidence suggests it’s a lot more complicated than we know.”Read this in a Daily Mail online article this morning. Talking about a new book in gluten sensitivity, and there are a lot of similarities between what we are saying and what the article says. Anyone interested, the book is: Gluten Attack: Why Gluten Is Waging War On Our Health And What To Do About It? by Professor David Sanders. Sounds like Prof Sanders is to gluten what Prof Taylor and Dr Mosley are to low-carb!

Yes it would be good if we all did that. I am retired but I’m going to be selling it to some ex colleagues tomorrow and some other friends on saturday. One friend has my book at the mo so I’m hoping she and her daughter will sign up 🙂

I use the Turkish style yogurt from Lidl, which is 10% fat, so a little goes a long way. In the early days of the BSD, when I too had between meal pangs, I used to have about 30g of this yogurt and a few sultanas, which I kept in the pot in the fridge, pre-soaked in a ginger or rose tea – because they are all plump-shush you only need a half dozen or so to give a sweet treat.

I’ve just scanned the first page of replies to this thread- ‘ How will my GP react?’.
Firstly, I feel saddened by the nervous tone in the question, which reflects the old fashioned, patriarchal service that a lot of people are still clearly receiving from our so called ‘modern NHS’. I too am a nurse, and expect more from my GP. Any government paper will always wax lyrical about care being ‘patient focused’ and patients being ’empowered’, but sadly, reading this thread, it seems not. There are glimpses of good practice tho; in the BSD book, a reference was made to one of the guys in the case studies being an ‘expert patient’.
Sadly, our GPs have been tied to ‘targets’ for BP, cholesterol and Blood sugar levels for years, and a lot of them seem to have lost sight of the notion of patient empowerment at all!
Saying this, any GOOD GP would applaud their patient for taking responsibility for their health and well being and would support them. Same for practice nurses. I know a few practice nurses they get allocated a mere 7 minutes per patient, often with no lunch break!
My take on it all is this; This is YOUR life, your body and don’t worry about what your GP may or may not think. Go right in there, tell them what you’re doing, that it’s fully evidence based and that you want their support (and monitoring) to safely wean from whatever medication you are on. If they don’t want to do this, change your GP- I did, and get a great service now. It’s so worth it. Good luck! -
hi cherrianne
Thank you for sharing the website address, I had a look at my ideal weight and it was exactly the weight I was aming for, brilliant.

Still struggling with constipation. I’m taking psyllium twice a day, plenty of fluids and still it persists. I have seeds and veg (though perhaps not as much as I should) and have taken senna three days running and …. nothing! I’m sure it’s stalling weight lose and it’s very frustrating.

I have a question. I have made the fish stew tonight and it says it’s 390 calories for 1 serving and it serves 2. I have been through all the ingredients and I can only get the calories to add up to more or less 390 for the whole pan of stew. There’s no way there’s nearly 800 calls in the pan?? I’m using Spanish stock cube which is only 20 cals, tomatoes are only 65 cals, seafood was 200 cals, 80 cals for the olive oil and I’m overestimating, fennel was 12 cals, spinach was 10 cals, the rest of the few cals are for the garlic and little bit of onion. Am I making a mistake coz I’m about to eat the whole pan?

What about your families and your friends and work colleagues?

I am sure we can get a lot more.I am hoping for one more later this evening.

Hi Lostgirl
Hooray for the lovely couple! Why not give them a bowl of delicious homemade soup or a really tempting salad to say thankyou.
Ditching cake is hard – not that I eat – ATE – it a lot. I have a savoury tooth. However, I make Very Special birthday & wedding cakes. You can’t buy them, I give them as presents. But , I’ve just had to explain to my soon to be 40 yr old son why he won’t be getting one! He is very supportive & is paying for the family to go on holiday & be together for his special day. It’s a big year for us, 70 ,2 x 40, 18 & me 65yrs old. I was going to make a very BIG cake!! We don’t get together often. I’m disappointed & probably everyone will be. BUT , it’s more important for me to stay on the rails than to make & eat CAKE!
I will make him jam tarts though. And then I’ll move away from them very quickly!!
Did you know Pepsi coke is excellent for cleaning toilets? Chuck it in & try it. 😘

Things like crudities with hummus or a yoghurty dip would be low cal and filling, while adding a bit of fat too. Personally what works for me is delaying the time I start eating. If I skip breakfast, its as though my stomach stays asleep until I put something in it and I don’t feel hungry until after that first meal. I don’t know if it works that way for other people too?

Hi captain Lynn.
Sorry to say, NCIS , Gibbs hasn’t arrived yet.
How can you build me up , only to knock me back down.
I would love Gibbs to be our team leader, I would definately not eat carbs if he says so.
Swoon swoon.
He had a make over or over haul at the start of this season.
Sometimes I think his overcoats are too long.
But his smile……. Dreamy.Oh and
Yogurt and apple.
Ham salad
Fish and veg.Tons or gallons of hot water.
How are you doing?

Menu Today:
B – Yogurt and seeds
L – fish soup with a dollop of yogurt
D – 2 x Heck Sausages, roasted cauliflower topped with grated parmesan and quinoa sprouts, with olive oil and vinegar dressingFirst time I have done roasted cauli and I love it! Gives it quite a nutty flavour and is not as soggy as boiled cauli. Really impressed.

I love the idea if a family of flytraps! I understand its hard when you have try to please all the people all the time and I agree with you about the waste issue. I have had to grin and bear it with a few new things I’ve bought but they haven’t lived up to expectations!
Another alternative might be almond, coconut or soya milk. All low carb and low cal so long as you stick to the unsweetened ones. I am currently using almond milk and it works quite well in tea.

Lostgirl you should have a thread ‘on a high’.
Well, diluted pepsi is much better than neat! Perhaps aim to slowly dilute it more and try some other herbal teas – you might like the strawberry herbal teas 🙂
So glad you have friends who put you onto this diet:)
-
I would be happy to swop a slice or two, might say bye bye to the half pears, for instance. LivLife here I come.

Thanks, Janet1973, great minds think alike! I’ve put that suggestion up to the other Flytraps, but the other two I share milk with can only use skimmed as the fat in cream, semi skimmed and full fat tastes off to them. It’s genetic apparently! So I’m veto-ed. I do have the odd individual catering carton of evaporated as I regard it as a rare treat. (Shades of my misspent youth.) So I might just switch to that when the current pack of skimmed is finished. Am I the only baby boomer who can’t “waste” food no matter what the provocation or benefits of doing so? I’m beginning to feel I have hijacked LucyAB’s original thread. Although it has been worth it for me! Thanks for all the ideas, guys.
-
Thanks Bill, Captin and Sunny! I’m a it of a scales addict so may give them a miss for a day or too. I’ve been to so many slimming clubs so your advice was spot on! I’m going to concentrate on nice meals and plenty of water. Thanks again and please keep me posted on how you are all doing (brilliantly by the sounds of things) xx

on 5 Apr 2016 at 17:56 in Welcome to the BSDI follow a low FODMAP diet due to my food intolerances. I’m only on day 2 but feeling optimistic as I think the recipes follow that philosophy quite well. I’m using lactofree free options of things like milk and cheese, and swapping out things I can’t have like onions! Good luck.

on 5 Apr 2016 at 17:53 in Welcome to the BSDReading your post was like I’d written it. My mum is also T2 and overweight… although now fighting lung cancer too. I’m not diabetic but definitely addicted to cars (sugar mainly). I’ve tried nearly every diet going, and been successful. But- I’ve never managed to maintain it as a lifestyle. Always slipped back to ‘normal’ eating. I am following a low FODMAP plan as I am intolerant to lots of things. The BSD seems to fit this well. Feeling positive about this one.

I actually feel
Full. So think think the old rum tubby Tum may be getting smaller!Having diluted Pepsi . Tried the ginger tea and licorice.. Even true adding fizz…. Not for me.. Maybe add stevia ??
Think if I can keep the Pepsi diluted it should be ok.
The soups I made today were own off the cuff soup. But tastes so good. All stuff from the book!
Thursday will
Be a mini slip day. The lovely couple who put me onto this diet will be popping over. They are off on holiday and will be eating lovely food.I can honestly say from the bottom of my heart they saved my life. Sure I’m doing the work but if they hadn’t of told me… I would never have tried.
I’m now telling everyone!! It’s real food and not rabbit food!
-
Lostgirl you are doing so brilliantly!!! You could afford a small piece of cheese with a strawberry. 1 oz of cheese is 113 calories and less than half a gram of carbs!
1 0z of cheese would take your calorie total up to 752! 🙂
OR a medium boiled egg (66 calories) with a bit of salad. 🙂 -
Thank you all..
I do feel good. I downloaded a new app( trial for 7 days) Nutra check . It’s got every food in there uk version. You can scan a bar code even put in your exercise.
I had strawberrys for breakfast followed by a cabbage and pancetta soup then a roasted pepper soup with oodles
Of cheese 34g to be precise all this and I’m at639 calories!!!
I think later I may just treat myself to a few more strawberrys!!!

Hi Caroline999, welcome to the forums. I had a pretty bad first 4 or 5 days when I started the diet. As you are following the book to the letter it will be as Sunnyb suggested – carb withdrawal. Have you tried some hot herbal teas as well as cold water?? It can be a bit more comforting.
All I can say is I took paracetamol for the headaches and this phase doesn’t last for long. Soon you will be singing the praises of this diet and feeling very well 🙂

Hi SunnyB, thank you so much for your reply. No idea whether the fat I’m taking in is sufficient, I am literally following the menu from the book, to the letter. I think you’re right though, it’s carb withdrawal and hitting me hard, as I did have a carb-rich-diet before. I’ll hang in there and hopefully it will pass. Meanwhile, the painkillers are going in! Thanks for your support, it’s appreciated.

As an after thought, remembered too late to edit, Bill – do you know how many carbs are in the coconut flour flatbreads you put on here?

on 5 Apr 2016 at 15:51 in Welcome to the BSDClearspring make the Miso paste, I get it from a Healthshop, but Waitrose stock it as well. Flax is another name for Linseed, and the label may have either on it. Again Waitrose have it -golden linseed. Sainsburys also have the linseeds, but they have jars of Miso paste which I did not find in my local one last week – but that may have been out of stock.
Hope that helps. -

on 5 Apr 2016 at 15:50 in Welcome to the BSDHi JWS!
I love Miso, it comes in 3 ways, a jar of paste (most economical), sachets of paste & individual dried sachets. It isn’t to everyone’s taste though. Waitrose & Sainsbury’s stock Miso.
My local Holland & Barrett stocks Miso & milled flax along with the rest of the gubbins, tend to buy there when they have 2:1 promotions or half price deals. Have no Lidl near me, but other posters swear by them!
My weeny local health food shop does stock a lot as well, so I usually manage to get things without going on-line, if I do I find Ocado pretty reliable
-
As luck would have it, I was driving past a Waitrose this afternoon so popped in and got 2 loaves of LivLife bread. It’s £1.59 for a loaf that is half the size of a “normal” one, but I was expecting it to be small. We treated ourselves to a slice each when we got home, spread with butter of course, just to try. We like it! Very seedy, which I love, and filling!
I will find a space in the freezer for the loaves and work out how to incorporate it into our meal plans, just a slice or two as part of a meal rather than it being most of the meal. I am very pleased to have an easy, go to lunch or meal to have if things get unexpectedly rushed or plans have to suddenly change (which they are doing frequently). Adding some cheese, or eggs or ham with a tomato would be a much better alternative then a microwaved ready meal (which had to happen last week 😱).
Thank you so much for the recommendation. And I can’t wait to have toast again! (all planned in of course……)

Hey Crispybacon
take a look at the results being posted in the 8 weeks and over thread.
In just a short time you and your OH can be posting results like that and we are all here to help you get there.
As SunnyB said, there is always someone here nowadays so any problems, just shout, although your whole attitude suggests that you are well up for this. -
Hi Meredex
You’re definitely not alone in this, I plateaued quite early on too. It will pass and you will start to show a loss on the scales again. Bill is right about the fat and carbs – if you keep and eye on both, keeping the first up and the later down, things will soon start to happen again. Don’t be disheartened, go with the flow and don’t stress about your body taking time to adjust.
Hope to see some positive results posted by you soon. -

Marigold I use — never noted the salt content but usually try not to add more when using stock.
Miso is new to me – off to Google unless you have any recs as to where best to buy along with linseed, flax etc..
I will experiment with the pepper soup – use them in pasta sauces and they make a nice juice with orange, carrot and sweet potato, but both are off the menu for a while! -
Welcome to the BSD clan TWSAndy and wife. There is so much variety possible on this eating regime and with a little planning you will find yourself rediscovering food. Getting your head round full fat is a tough one, but an essential part of this way of eating, as it helps you feel full and for longer, as well as helps the body get into fat burning mode. And Bill’s right about the carbs too.
If you need support or advise, shout out, as there will definitely be someone around to respond. And be sure to let us all know how you get on.

on 5 Apr 2016 at 15:25 in Welcome to the BSDHi Alice
let us know the types of food that the kids usually have at lunch and one or more of the cookery gurus will soon be along with some advice.
Kids are really adaptable and with the help of a food processor and a bit of out of the box thinking, you can get all sorts of good stuff into them and they’ll never know.
Welcome to the forums by the way, everybody here has the same goals as you so don’t be afraid to shout for any advice you may need. -
Hi Venusflytrap
Perhaps if you swap to full fat milk you will find that you use less? Full fat has less carbs than skimmed milk. I always used to find that I had to have a larger splash of skimmed (well its virtually just sugared water anyway) to get the same effect in my tea or coffee as full fat. -
Hi Switzerland, haven’t cooked the squash yet. I planned to do it Monday but the weather turned quite warm so I had something else. It’s only going to be 19 tomorrow and I’ll be home all day so I’ll cook it then.
I always have quite a few giant zucchinis, they hide under the leaves and get enormous. Finding new ways to cook them became a big joke in our house because we’ve had a bumper crop this year and they’re still going. Even our chooks got sick of them 🙂
I’ve let a few grow big deliberately because I slice them lengthways and use the slices as lasagne sheets. I’ve posted that recipe. You can also cut off one end, scoop out the middle and stuff it with eggplant, capsicum, onions, mushrooms, tomatoes, mozzarella and Parmesan. Add mince if you’re not vegetarian. Replace the cut end and bake until tender. Delicious. They make fantastic soup too, with veg stock, onions, garlic and fenugreek. Cook until tender. Whizz with a stick blender, add a tub of cream cheese and whizz again. Freezes well, and very low carb.
