This is basically what I do. I tend to only drink on my non-fast 800 days, as I don’t feel comfortable reducing my nutrition further on those days, but on many of the other maintenance days I will have a couple of glasses of wine/prosecco and either intersperse them or follow them with sparkling water with a slice of lemon.

I have just got back from a leaving drink with a colleague, and had just the sparkling water as today was an 800 day, while the rest had beer or cocktails. It gets easier with practice.

Hiii back seat gang! Beep beeeeeep!
MAIASMUM Kep thinking pozzzz….you have got off to a fab start and can look forward to more of the same if you stick to the rules! Ok probably it will slow down a bit but then some people seem to have a bit of a resurgence and another quite big chunk might come off! By the end of 8 weeks i had lost 34 lbs,so on average that was four and a bit pounds a week! So much more encouraging than the old “one pound, two if youre lucky” per week losses of previous diets. Forget the past, all that matters is this time! Keep on keeping on! X

FROG well done on getting back on track so efficiently these last few days!
Its quite staggering isnt it that the P Nurses don’t seem interested in BSD..you wd think as health professionals they wd want to keep themselves updated! X

IMOGEN thats great news about yr blood test results and in going down several dress sizes! X
SUNSHINE GIRL I read your post on the other thread,so glad you are looking after yrself and feeling better x

Mmm that casserole sounds good! 🙂

Was thinking of you earlier today coz we went to Budgens in New Brighton..was a little disappointing coz its small..nothing like the big one i went to in London..but a few bargains to be had and some bits n bobs i havent seen in other supermarkets.
Cdnt find that low carb bread tho.
Had to resist some nice looking treats in the cake and bread dept!
My beau got some hummus, reduced to 28 p from £1.15 even tho it was still a week from the sellby date, and a few other bargains i cant remember now!
I got big pack of emery boards for a pound and an ipad screen protector and cleaning cloth, again a pound. Oh and six large free range eggs reduced to 75 p..sell by date 30 Sept
not a very exciting haul, but at least ive been now and able to report back..not really worth you visiting unless you want a day at the seaside at the same time.
The smell of fish n chips was tantalising as we strolled on the prom! Gahhhhhhhhh!
Have a lovely time this weekend..dont forget to let us have a pic of you and Mr Lucky x
Ps having a cuppa,i suddenly realised i’d been staring at elderly couple at next table..my eyes were going from their plates to their mouths and back again as he ate a scone, she devoured a slice of ginger cake….managed to pull myself together before they noticed! X

Good evening everyone and welcome those who are new to the thread,
Well it’s been a busy day for me, trying to get everything up to date before my week off!! Yay I’m on holiday. Now difficult times ahead. I eat when I am happy, when I am miserable and always eat when I have something to celebrate (like a week off work!!! Lol, like a good day in the garden, by doing a good job indoors, by following a diet for a week!!!). I will clebrate anything with food. So will be relying on you all to keep me on the straight and narrow this week! I am hoping to have a couple of days out, another reason for an eating fest in the old days, but this is the new me and everyday is a fresh day and everyday is nearer my goal of a healthy liver and healthy veins! And a happy, healthy old age. So even if I eat more calories than usual as long as I eat low carb I will be ecstatic.
Today I have eaten cheese and butterbean salad with oil and lemon dressing, bacon wrapped chicken with runner beans (most of my dishes I have found the recipes on this site). Tonight GY&Bs. Coffee as usual. Haven’t had a walk today, but will hopefully get lots of exercise next
    week.
As you all say, we need to get our head around this low cal diet. But are any of you finding cutting out carbs is making you less hungry. I am certainly finding that’s the case with me!! which is giving me great hope for my future.
    Bfn xx

    Hi Avila, that’s brilliant news
Sounds as if your GP is more open minded and informed that my practices GP nurse.

Your alcohol comment reminded me – I nipped into M&S today, I love their “dine in for £10” deals. I’d thought about it, reminded myself that since I shouldn’t be having the wine, and certainly don’t need the desert (yep, I can eat an entire profiterole stack by myself in one sitting) – then decided it was still a bargain if I got the cheese as a desert option.
Foiled – the local M&S didn’t have the cheese platter, BUT – I got the raspberries instead of proper pudding (and they did have profiteroles on the shelf, I ignored them 🙂 ).
So – looks as if I’ll be eating chicken and raspberries for the next few days!
I may treat myself to a small roast potato the day I cook the chicken, and a small glass of wine.

Been to GP after 2 weeks of self -monitoring my Blood pressure after some low readings following a stone weight loss. Started where I thought I was going to be in trouble for taking myself off meds (as it was still in healthy range and thought a non-medicated level would be a good assessment). Well he is impressed with my BP, today’s surgery read being better than the home read, and….

    No More Meds!!!

Well not for BP anyway. I have to go back for a nurse BP check in a month. but having been told previously that once on BP meds expect to always be on them…. and he agreed that this is usual.

Dr was positive about the view that sugar is the problem not fat, didn’t discuss BSD in detail. But he was really pleased about my ‘lifestyle change’. If I could kick the alcohol as self treatment for stress he would be even happier.

I have had a bad week on the diet front and discouraged by my poor self-will. But the gain on my BP health has not changed. And the affirmation about this fuels my motivation again.

Now just to tackle the other 2 stone and a bit – and being told that as a ‘well built lady’ (is that the ‘big bones’ argument??) getting to the 25 BMI is unlikely….guess what my target is!

    Hi Frog

It’s almost like fighting a losing battle!

Really well done on your results.

Why is it that if you had turned up and your blood tests were higher they would have had no hesitation in increasing your meds! Why can’t the medical profession accept that we aren’t all cretins who are only too happy to be ‘dosed up’ with whatever they deem fit?

The nurse should have been patting you on the back and saying you go for it, if you can make the bigger target well done and I’m here to help if you need me. But hey she probably thinks you can only do it with a ‘proper diet’ roll on all those carbs! LOL

Will certainly ask about access to my records best time I’m in the surgery.

Whatever you are doing its doing the trick so just keep going!

    Hi Sue

that must be incredibly frustrating with the blood sugars being on the increase – they can’t force you to take or increase metformin, and as you say, yours are just on the borderline, it’s not as if your sugars are rushing off in the stratosphere.

I didn’t know about the link with blood sugars and stress, but it does sound as if you’re having a hard time of it with caring responsibilities and concerns about your family.
Great news about the rampril and your blood pressure though – when you do the next set of blood tests, ask if the fatty liver tests can be done too – forgotten exactly which test that is, but my fatty liver problems are no more since starting BSD.

Good news on the bike – don’t do all of it while knitting though, do try and fit in some speedy spurts for an aerobic work out. MM’s “Trust me I’m a Doctor ” program last week looked at the impact of High intensity interval training (HIIT), definitely worth watching.

    Hi Peewee

If you’ve been a serial dieter for a number of years, you’ll probably come across a number of things that you’ll have to suspend belief on! Eating full fat is one of those – another biggie for me was the realisation that I simply wasn’t getting enough salt.

As Avila suggests, adding some full fat dairy may help give a better balance
Should help kick in weight loss, and give you energy for the 10k steps

Thank you SunnyB, I will definitely look at the mini goals thread. I’ve tended to be a big goals kind of person in the past, but it hasn’t worked for my weightloss, so time to try something different!

I’m taking this day by day this time and am writing down each day that I a) stick to diet and b) do my 10k steps. I’m also having little treats along the way, to keep me chirpy (a facial or a haircut, or massage sort of thing). I feel a bit spoiled, booking them, but I’m trying to keep busy. I never think about food unless I’m in my kitchen, so I’m trying to spend as little time in there as possible.

Lucyjane, keep going! 2 stone by end of October would be fab!

    Hi sunshine-girl

Guess it must be Monday now!!! Hope you’re feeling a lot ‘lighter and brighter’ in yourself especially after you have enjoyed that lovely bottle of white!

I read this thread with tears in my eyes. Just seemed to hit home. I guess quite a few of us here are in out third quarter century! We all have baggage to carry and whilst we probably have lots of good things in our lives we also have burdens of various weights (no pun intended !)

My story is pretty short … 9 years ago I contracted septicaemia, lost my hip, was in a wheelchair for 18 months, had a hip replacement but can now only walk with crutches. Ok, so the good news is I survived, I have some mobility, even if it is vastly diminished, and I have a good life generally. But, as with the rest of us, l’m only human and do get really frustrated at times with being dependent on others, to a certain degree, and not being able to do all the things I want to.

Sunshine-girl we all beat ourselves up because we’re not perfect …. do you really know anyone that is!!!!

I think we should allow ourselves the odd ‘blue’ times because without them we can’t appreciate the good things in our lives .

    Why are we here????

All of us want to lose weight. Lots of us want to improve our diabetes/pre diabetes and come off medication. It’s a chicken and egg situation …. we need to lose weight to improve our health but that involves a whole new way of thinking and doing. We are non of us perfect, even if we think we are, and so after a lifetime, for many of us, of yo-yo dieting trying every quick fix under the sun we have eventually arrived here !

We know this makes sense, we know it works but we will all fall by the wayside at times. I think the secret I’d to get back on the horse as quickly as possible when you fall off and no more beating ourselves up for the odd lapse …. after all we are only human.

Thank you all for being part of this great community and being there to listen when times get rough.

Sorry to ramble but I do feel much better now that I’ve ‘ put pen to paper’ and I hope you do to sunshine-girl!!

Hi Peewee, nothing much to add to all the advice you’ve already received. But just wanted to wish you good luck. I’ve had some days where nothing has changed or I’ve gone up, but like Esnecca, I’ve seen the scales going down these last few days. Hang in there. It’s bound to happen sooner or later.
Do you use an app to track your calorie and carb consumption? Lots of people seem to use My Fitness Pal, but I’ve started out on Fat Secret. Horrendous name, but it really has changed my views on food. I was amazed to see all the carbs in things that I have traditionally thought of as being low calorie. It has really opened my eyes. For health reasons, I have to eat a lot of vegetables, but choosing ones low in carbs has made all the difference. If you’re not already using one of these apps or programmes, you might find it useful.
    Good luck.

It’s not technically a meal replacement by any means, but I’ll make a protein shake sometimes when time is a factor. I use Isopure Zero Carb Creamy Vanilla. It tastes just like Galak white chocolate, I kid you not. 210 calories, all from protein, for a full serving of 2 cups water, 2 scoops powder. Between the water and protein, it fills you up like crazy. I make a half serving most of the time when I drink them after resistance training to help the ol’ muscles knit back together.

  • Verano, I hope you are feeling less stressed. I have pulled myself around (see thread Feeling Really Low) and will get back on track after the weekend. In the meantime I am going to be a bit easier on myself and think of something else rather than my diet. I am in this for the long haul so gently does it.

    Sue1234,

Hope you don’t mind me jumping in here…just wanted to say that from reading your posts that you have been through a stressful time recently…what with your mum and auntie both being unwell.
Did your doctor ask if there had been a change any significant stressors in your life recently? The reason I ask is that there is a direct link between the stress response and blood glucose levels…which may be contributing to this increase in your levels at the moment and would have skewed the results. Stress hormones prompt the release of glucose into the blood to allow us to deal with short term stress or danger! It can take people with diabetes much longer for these levels to return to normal.
Just a thought. Try not to be too despondent.🌻

Good evening, I had a few voddies last night and really didn’t feel any better for it (that guilt thing again). Got up this morning and decided to have a bit of a pamper. Epilated my legs, they really needed it as last time I was in a rush and shaved, lots of spiky regrowth. Plastered my hair in a hot oil treatment and left it on while I showered and gave myself a body scrub, then rinsed and washed my hair and put on nice clothes, nothing slobby. Yesterday I had been walking round in a pair of peddle pushers that looked more like plus fours (baggy around the arse). And a top that not long ago was waist length but now my bust and stomach are out of the way it was nearly to my knees. They are going in the recycle bag.

This afternoon I went to look for a jacket I had seen on line but they didn’t have any left, all the summer stuff has gone now. So I browsed the reduced (price not size) rail and found a mustard lace top and a pair of tight white trousers with a mustard, green and yellow op art pattern. €54 for both BUT I got them for €30. Although they are still a size 16 and I am now in a 14 they were in a shop similar to Top Shop where the sizes are 10 times smaller than a normal human takes so I am happy with my purchases and they will take me into Autumn before I get out the black jeans.

I am not going for a swim today, even though it is 27 degrees outside. I don’t have to if I don’t want to. And I bought myself an expensive bottle of white wine which I will enjoy without guilt, maybe tomorrow evening.

Thank you all for your good wishes and cheering me up. Just a blip, a bump in the road and if this eating plan is my life from now on I am going to enjoy it and not suffer just to lose another llb. I will get there at my own pace. I am going to stay off the site until Monday and stay off the scales as well.

    Thanks again.

On the BSD full fat is good as helps to feel full and gives important stuff – so dairy is good, calorie count limits how many but they are good for us.

Part of the challenge is to rethink what we thought we know – especially the ‘low fat’ = weight loss mantra

Frog – great news about your results and your weight loss. You would think your dropping blood sugars without metformin – compared with her patient on medication and the standard diabetic diet who still couldn’t get blood sugars to normal range – would have made her sit up and take notice. That’s without all the other good stuff going on with your results. It is really sad as so many people will continue to be injured by the way they are being managed by their diabetic educators.
Imogen, it’s so good that the scales are moving again and even better news that your blood sugars etc are normal.

Fed up – Went to see my doctor today. As my HBA1c has gone up she wanted to put me on more pills as the clinical guidance says that between 58-59 is the marker for increasing the medication – mine was 59. I have persuaded her that I will continue with the food change and weight loss in an attempt to reduce this figure, she has given me a six month ultimatum, but she has said that I am a diabetic and this position will not change, in any event I will stay on the Metformin 🙁 My family agree with her 🙁
Only positive is she has stopped the ramipril because my blood pressure was getting on the low side 100/60 and she says that the weight loss will have had a beneficial effect on my fatty liver. – I did not see this as a consolation as my focus is my diabetes.

Frog, they’ll all have heard of it in the next few years and will then feel very silly they didn’t take it seriously at first. If your nurse doesn’t go and research about the diet she must be a numpty after seeing your fantastic lab results! Now you can go on to show her that its possible to reach your ‘ambitious’ target weight!

Maiasmum, don’t worry, commit to the 8 weeks and your losses will continue, but be aware the scales will change much more slowly than in the first couple of weeks. Also they don’t always immediately reflect how well you’ve stuck to the BSD. However the losses soon add up, you will also notice how much better you feel and you will never want to go back! Well done on your fabulous start.

Imogen, good to see you loosing again too. It definitely helps me to see that others are continuing to do well even if it’s not always plain sailing. I’ve only just passed your starting weight now and hoping to be under 100kg by Christmas (more of a midi than mini goal!)

  • Hi guys, I would like to join in to keep myself accountable too!
I am just about to turn 40 next week ( and yes will be splurging that night ha), and have heaps to lose. 115kg and aiming to get to 90kg as first step (that’s a 16 for me and haven’t been that for 10 years since before kids of course. ).

Started on Monday so on day 5. Feeling great and not found difficult. Am finding my fitness pal app to be really helpful. Have been usually around the 900 cal mark cause not ready to give up my coffee and tea yet!

Had the switch flip last week I think when I realised my bday was only two weeks away and I had promised myself I wouldn’t be fat and fourty. I know I am heading for all sorts of health issues and it just dawned on me my dad was 42 when he died of a heart attack ( he had two brothers and his dad same fate in their forties).

Anyway…hi from mum of two in Aussie.

Is under 800 a bad thing? The impression from the book was that it was low enough for weight loss but high enough for essential nutrients. If go lower all the time then maybe kicks off a defensive metabolism / famine response??

    Hi everyone!
Yes. I totally agree with you all. Us curvaceous ladies and gents didn’t get this way by being ever being good at watching what we ate or having astounding control. We are the ones who don’t always have an “off” button, but we probably have an on button..that’s stuck on at times! It’s just that it is never stuck on the diet button for long enough! I also read threads and think..oh god how did they stick to 800 for 8 weeks with no blips. I have to say that I think the largest part is the mental strength. I always think that I am someone who is fairly mentally strong..but I have to say that food is my stabiliser..it takes the edge off..or it comforts or soothes. So maybe I am strongish because of being a foodie. I am definitely a person who believes that food is love! I have some healthy weight friends who maybe have other compulsions such as picking their face or being quite anxious. Anyway..what I am trying to say is..that for me it is all about getting my head round the 800. Not necessarily getting my mouth or tummy round it..but my head! If every day I try..then that is surely better than not trying.
What I try to do..is project myself forward 8 weeks and positively imagine how pleased my 8 week self will be if I put in the effort.
    All mind games!
    Have a good day everyone.

    Hi Jan,

Thank you, and for helping me remember just how great the BSD800 is…nice to see the back seat busy once more🙋 hi gang…x

Scales finally showing some change after remaining static for the last 3 weeks!
0.1kg yesterday, 0.3kg today – so, moving in the right direction😊 once more.

    Start weight 118.8kg size 20-22
    Today. 97kg size 16-18

Next mini goal. 95kg…eventually I would like to reach around 75kg😕 (depending on how that affects my body / health)…will review as get closer to target weight! More interested in reaching a healthy size for ME, than an arbitrary ‘recommended’ average size or weight

More important has been the changes to blood glucose levels, cholesterol, etc…now all in normal range and am reducing medications gradually…though GP resistant to this as I have a heart condition…still think it can be achieved😊

The Diabetes nurse was slightly incredulous that I stopped taking metformin in June, but my blood sugars continued to fall and are now boringly normal!
When I saw the summarised results online a couple of weeks ago, I was bemused by the Urine albumin:creatinine ratio results. because no “normal range” was quoted, and the ratio hadn’t been calculated. I tried to do it myself, and came up with answers that didn’t make sense. I now have the answer; my results are “too normal to calculate a ratio”.

That aside, I wholeheartedly recommend getting online access to your patient records if you don’t have that already – it’s brilliant to have the history of blood test results rather than trying to recall what was said at the consultation, also you’re better prepared with questions if you’ve reviewed test results in advance.

Then we moved on to lifestyle goal setting
Target weight “a bit too ambitious?” the nurse suggested – would I like to go for 80 kilos instead?
Err – no! – if I only lose another 7 kilos in 15-16 weeks I would be very p’d off.

I’m going to do another HbA1C in December – I’ll be pleased to have confirmation that everything is still on track, although I suspect the Nurse didn’t quite believe the last ones, although she did say that she wouldn’t include cholesterol tests because my cholesterol is ‘too normal to bother about’.

As others have commented elsewhere on the forum, it is a bit scary that medical staff seem completely oblivious to new research – the nurse I saw this morning is running the diabetes clinics and had never heard of BSD. She was pleased that I was her second patient this morning who is doing well; the other one is ‘eating a proper diet, not like your one, and taking her medication’ (and still has blood sugar levels above the normal range, BTW, but does have reduced blood sugar).

Hi Janet and Loopylou – yes, it is weighing everything that is the secret for me. It really makes sense – shame that it took 4 months to realise how bad I was at estimating the weight of food. But on the positive side the 4 months have allowed me to completely retrain my way of eating and I will never go back to my bad old ways.
Thank you Frog for mentioning how good Fatsecret is in this forum. It has been so helpful. I have saved all my favourite meals and it is so quick to plan the days eating so I don’t go over the 800.

I resort to using a meal replacement occasionally as I don’t always have time to cook. I don’t like having to use them though as they don’t actually fill you up for very long and they’re no substitute for proper food. I’ve tried a few but the one I use is USN Diet Fuel as the net carbs aren’t too high (10g). Also if I’m out of the house and need something to eat on the go Quest Nutrition Bars have only 5g net carbs. Both are around 200 calories. Best for emergencies only though because I’m sure nutrition wise they’re not actually good for you. They help me stick to my 800 calories though because otherwise I’d end up grabbing a sandwich or a bar of chocolate.

I have a big bag to take to the charity Dress for Success today – lots still with labels on! And another one for a general charity shop. And a pile of too big bras for Oxfam.
(for anyone with old bras to get rid of, most charities will simply sell them as ‘rag’ Oxfam have a project for them to be resold in Senegal, and there’s also a charity called “Smalls for all” that accepts ‘gently worn’ bras which still have a lot of good wear in them.)

I pulled a large suitcase and a couple of boxes from my storage unit a week or so ago – half of it going to charity shops – either too big now, or a style I can’t imagine why I ever thought I’d wear – or weird cuts that fit in some places, but not others.
One pair of new unworn trousers – still a bit too small but I’ll get there! – have been munched by a moth, so I need to investigate invisible darning or patching.

I’ve seen a lot of people about in one piece boiler suits recently, so back in fashion – I have a vintage Donna Karan one somewhere!

Janrng – three-quarter sleeves are the way to go!

  • I’ve got one of those ‘pencil sharpener’ type green and white ones – they’re great. I got mine on amazon for less than £10, but I saw them in a supermarket the other day.
They are brilliant for courgette and carrot, and I haven’t really tried anything else (well I did, and cabbage didn’t work!)
I’m not sure how they would cope with larger vegetables – I had a lovely supermarket salad the other day with spiralised butternut squash in it for example.
For £10, they are a great way to try out whether you like spiralised veg (you can also try out by buying pre-spiralised from a supermarket). Just after I’d ordered mine, Lynne recommended the slightly larger Cuisique Spiralizer – currently £23 on amazon, which does a wider range of veg, including larger veg.
Lynne assured me it doesn’t take up to much kitchen drawer space!

Like everyone else, I’m hoping things don’t look as gloomy today and you are feeling a bit sunnier and more positive. Just know positive thoughts are with you, whether you are posting or not. Have a great w/e.

I remember those ads as well! Great that the BSD is a much better solution though – so pleased mine has almost completely disappeared now, things fit better and look better and I can get into some clothes that I love, that have been hanging in the wardrobe for years, waiting for me to get into them again. Only kept the classics, so they’re still current enough to wear now.
