Yes, the challenge has really taken off hasn’t it! Such an inspired idea, a bit like BSD. Just shows that people don’t need to spend lots of money signing up to weight loss classes and programmes.
The app sounds interesting, what’s it called? I’d like to give it a go. I’m swimming to Ireland at the moment with the speedo app.

on 1 Jan 2017 at 22:01 in Fast 800Wow Laine – there seem to be lots of us doing the 1000 mile challenge! 😀
I decided to start the BSD because I wanted to be around as long as possible for my family, in the best shape I could be. Now I’ve lost the weight its time to get more active. Because of work, I’ll be able to walk more on some days than others – but any walking is better than none. I’m completing the record chart from the magazine to record my mileage. Also logging steps and miles in my age a day diary, where I record my food intake. As a bit of fun, I found an app for my iPhone: you pick a challenge – mine is walking round Italy – enter steps or miles and it takes you on the journey of your challenge. See how it goes – might lose interest in that app!

Hi everyone I’d like to join this group if that’s OK. I’m starting my 2nd 8 week tomorrow, did it for 6weeks before Christmas and lost 13 lbs but put 4 back on over Christmas but looking forward to starting again. Have 3 and a half stone to lose and would like to do that by October as I will be 60. Type 2, under active thyroid, high bp and high cholesterol is not going to stop me. It’s good knowing you can come on here and get the help and support you need. Onwards and upwards!.

Hi Juno
I feel the same – we can support each other. I plan to read through Captain Lynne’s 2016 posts (she lost over 7 stone) and have started making notes from my successful BSD last year.

Thanks Natalie – I’ll be doing the same with you!

Hi Julia
Yes, I would LOVE some support. I really like your approach of 1 meal at a time, 1 walk at a time. I have written that in my diary. It all helps my mindset.
I know that by sticking to BSD will have a tremendous affect on my mood, my body size and my health.
Here’s to us feeling great!

I will get on scales tomorrow morning and try and work out pounds/stones as well as the kilos I think in from 10 years living outside UK!

Hi Lainie UK
Thank you so much for you words of encouragement, I need all that I can get.
I was just reading your post and well done on the weight loss so far and your new job, I will watch your progress and hopefully will be able to share mine, here’s to a healthy 2017 thanks again.

Hi
I too am returning to the BSD after losing 2 stones last year but letting things slide over the past few months. After reading these forums for several months I decided that this new year I should sign up and join in. I know this lifestyle works, I just need to keep my motivation and good habits going. I want to lose 2 more stones this year but more than that I want to feel in control of what I eat. I am hoping that posting here will help me.

I’m doing the 1000 mile challenge as well. I’m so inspired by so many breathtaking photos. I have a large A4 diary and plan to add in photo, although I may need a separate album. I’m 51 now and my parents have health problems. I’ve finally realised that life is precious and I want to live the rest of my days, happy, healthy and active.

Elaine. Sounds like you could use some support. Will join you in the endeavour. I have less to lose having also been very successful losing on BSD last year. But this isn’t about same numbers but about sharing the same struggles, same small successes and same challenges – and crucially sharing support to help us work towards a healthier body and mind (can identify with the depression myself – current meds have caused some of my recent weight gain).
Go go go – this is about taking it one meal, one walk, one day at a time. Jump right on here if you have a bad day and together we will all stay on the wagon.

on 1 Jan 2017 at 21:34 in Starting the BSDHi – count me in with the January starters! Lost 3 stone 3 years ago on low carb and have steadily put it all back on. Carbs are my downfall – I’m like an addict once I start. My parents and a grandparent all had type 2 diabetes, and I’m coming up to that dangerous time of life. I need to get my sugar addiction under control while I’m still pre-diabetic!
800 calories seems daunting in the extreme; on the low carb diet, I didn’t count calories. However, I’m determined to give it my all.Good luck to all of us!

Hi Daisy
Sounds a great plan! I usually have breakfast at 10am but now I’m working I need to change my pattern of eating. So I’m going to try lunch, dinner and 1 small snack. I found soup was so filling last time.
Best of luck!

Lynne, have put a request in, waiting for reply.

Hi everyone! I have decided to start my own thread having been spurred on by some fabulous successes on here – particularly Captain Lynne.
I am 51 now and have been very fortunate with my health, but being so overweight (17st 12lbs) will lead to health problems at some point. I dare not even think about having to be lifted or staying in hospital and being examined. My Dad was in hospital last week and so the embarrasssment of having to cope with me having to go through the same, as a very heavy woman, and the increased risk of developing health problems are the main reasons why I want to lose weight now. I do also want to look better, be able to buy clothes in smaller sizes, even a size 16 would be great and say ‘yes’ to opportunities instead of making excuses. I love walking but am slow and so don’t feel confident in joining walking groups. I know I can change all that and I know how to do it. I just need to do it.
I had great success with BSD Aug – Oct 2016 but I wasn’t working and the days were longer, sunnier and warmer. I started working in October after a break of 3 years and I felt so alive. I’m sure my improved confidence through feeling lighter and fitter and liking what I saw in the mirror was the key to my success. What a different person I was at those interviews compared to the previous June when I interviewed for a job and was a nervous wreck, despite a lot of experience. My appearance made me feel embarrassed and the clothes I wore were the ones that fitted rather than being clothes I liked. I realised at that point, when I didn’t get a second interview that I had to change my appearance and improve my appearance. Just walking to the interview room left me puffed.
So, in August I started the BSD. I didn’t expect to be able to stick to it because I had never been able to stick to fasting – 600 calories was just too low. But what a difference 200 made. I stuck to it everyday and lost 26lbs. I. bought a navy suit, navy shoes and a couple of tops and got a great 4 day a week fundraising job.
I knew I would find it stressful, having been out of the work place for 3 years. I’d had depression and anxiety but left with enough in the bank to keep us going. I knew being with new people and trying to establish a working routine would be challenging and it was. I found it difficult keeping ,y eating routine going – all year I had followed restricted time eating 10am – 8pm which was easy when I wasn’t working.
I now feel much more settled but my weight is practically back where it started in August – ‘thanks’ also to Xmas and New Year. I can’t get into a lot of my newer clothes and miss the joy of having lots of choice.
I am still 20lbs down on this time last year and 32lbs down on my highest weight.
I know how to do the BSD and I did so well with not a lot of exercise apart from walking.
So, I am starting again tomorrow – 2nd Jan. I have 7 stone 9lbs to lose and am challenging myself to lose 5 stone this year.
I am taking part in the Country Walking 1000 mile challenge and will also swim 100 miles and read 52 books. Added to that is growing my nails again – they loo,ed great at my interview!
I have planned my meals and exercise and have Ocado arriving tomorrow. My Fitbit is charged and my walking clothes ready to put on.
I WILL LOSE 5 STONE THIS YEAR and will write about here, I’ll tell you about what’s working well, my successes and ask for your help when I’m finding it hard. I would love to have some buddies along the way so please join me in my challenge if you think it would help you as well.
Tomorrow morning I will take photos and measurements and the get out for a walk.
Here’s to a healthy 2017 and beyond!

posted by donnyman on NHS still giving out bad advice about Carbs
on 1 Jan 2017 at 20:41 in Welcome to the BSDThousands of people in Britain have reversed diabetes via VLCD. Roy Taylor’s work builds on the previous knowledge that those undergoing bariatric surgery tended to be rid of diabetes in very short order. I’ve worked for the NHS for 30 years and it is far too slow to alter advice. It will only advise a single healthy diet because it thinks we’re all a little bit thick and would be confused by more than one option. The move to a carb based diet in the 70’s was a political decision led by the American government and swiftly followed by GB. Since then as the carb based diet has spread around the world people have got fatter and diabetes and heart disease has increased, the evidence against the carb based diet is huge, but governments don’t want to see it.

I would have loved to go further today but just too wobbly.
Tomorrow, instead of muttering under my breath about being unable to leave the village because the bus runs a different route on bank holidays, I hope to walk to where the bus will be, and go,for a walk round Durham. A good night’s sleep should have me feeling better 😀 And get me away from both computer and TV. Need to get a good local map to sort out some walks in the area. Have you joined the Facebook group for the walking challenge?

Hi ana_m! I’m excited for you starting the BSD. I would love to buddy up with you if you decide you’d like to. I’m not sure how to go about that but would love to to that.
I am starting my 2nd 8 weeks today on the 800 plan. I initially lost 19.5 lbs. and today am down 16 pounds since October 9th, 2016. I finished my first 8 weeks the first week of December and then switched to the BSD way of life plan for the holiday period. I’m feeling pretty good about only regaining 3.5 lbs. since I kind of figured that the last couple of pounds weren’t completely stable yet.
I’m 5ft. tall and now weigh 141.5 lbs. I started out at 157.5 lbs.
My goal is to weigh 129 lbs. by the end of the next 10 weeks. I plan to eat 1000 calories or less each day and start a weight lifting and aerobic routine starting today.
My husband has been really supportive and given me tons of compliments but no one else I know has said a word about my weight loss. Even when I told them how much weight I’d lost, and that I was doing it to improve my health and improve my blood sugar. Both family and friends have not said a word. I know it shouldn’t matter what others think, but it does. This time around, I’m really going to have to let that go and just focus on how I feel and how much healthier I’m getting. I still have to admit, I’m disappointed. Oh well! It feels great to fit into smaller clothes that don’t hide my body.
So today I start again! My first weigh in: 141.5
Wishing everyone a successful BSD start here in the New Year 2017! -

on 1 Jan 2017 at 19:56 in Starting the BSDHi LighterLisa – that sounds like ‘carb flu’ which of course isn’t really flu but it is a reaction when you stop eating carbs- especially if you been used to eating quite a lot of carbs. It’s unpleasant but it passes in a few days as long as you don’t give in to carb craving.
As for sugar, try David Gillespie The Sweet Poison Quit Plan – he goes into detail about how sugar affects the body (much like carbs) and then helps with a plan to give it up. Once you lose the taste for sugar you won’t miss it. -
Hi Pcoventry
In what way do you mean it’s counter productive? I can imagine how annoying it is to go over because of peas!!! It’s hardly a bar of chocolate or glass of wine. When I was doing my menu planning I noticed that things like spinach, celery and mushrooms are really low calorie. I’m sure I read in the book about it being ok to be slightly over one day and under others. 30 calories can be pulled back. Keep going – good luck 🙂 -

on 1 Jan 2017 at 19:28 in Starting the BSDHi peeps I have started today starting this morning with porridge and spiced pear lunch was a mushroom and spinich omelette and tea was carbonara made.with courgetti all very nice . But I’ve had a nasty headache all day and feel shattered. I’m hoping that this will pass. The other thing I’m worrying about is getting bored with diet. I LOVE sweet things what can I eat in the evenings which is my weak point.

on 1 Jan 2017 at 19:24 in Starting the BSDWell done to all for being here – Bravo!
One thing I think TumTumP said.. Vegetables..
I feel bad as I overshot my calories by 30 today as I added some peas into my casserole! (was on 778 for today) but while we are encouraged to eat lots of veg – 100G of peas has 53cal in – so isn’t this being counter productive?
-
Starting the Fast 800 tomorrow, feeling excited but very nervous, I have a stone and a half to lose which has crept back on over the last 2 years after being with SW but I am used to eating large potions of carbs so this is going to be a steep learning curve. I feel it might be better for me to miss breakfast which I don’t normally eat until after walking my 3 dogs at about 11am, that way I have more scope for lunch and dinner? Also doing dry Jan so hope that will help.
Well lots of reading still to do, will make some soup tomorrow for lunch and steak and veg for lunch hope to get off to a good start.
Good luck to us all 👍

From the research I’ve been doing, the ideal amount of protein to consume without risking loss of muscle mass is 1-1.5g/kilo of IDEAL body weight, so at 5’6″, my ideal body weight is approximately 60kg, so I am for 60-90g max of protein per day.
I’m still doing my 3 hour walks most days and 2 days a week of yoga and I’m doing fine.
Cheers

on 1 Jan 2017 at 17:54 in Starting the BSDHappy New Year everyone!
I’d like to join you all for this journey. I’m going to weigh in tomorrow and get back on BSD Fast 800. Experimented with it in November/December and despite not being strict and having far too many calories (wine and cheese. LOTS of wine and cheese) still managed to lose 10lbs.
I’m long-term obese with an Underactive Thyroid so previously have found diets torture, weeks of effort undone with a wild weekend. So far BSD has been different, I really did lose the urge for rubbish (crisps) and was far more aware of how “bad” food made me feel (sluggish and unsatisfied). So I think this will work for me.
Look forward to sharing our success stories!

New Year Greetings to all ! I am hoping to start on 5th January . This will be my second round of 8 weeks. I lost 16 lbs before Christmas and am raring to go and lose a lot more. Thought I would enjoy the break over Christmas but I feel bloated and uncomfortable. My tastes seem to have changed and all the chocolate I ate was not particularly enjoyable. Had a call from my GP surgery encouraging me to lose more weight as my blood sugar has dropped back into the normal range (just ) so that has spurred me on.
Good luck everyone ! -
Have signed up for the 1000 mile challenge. 1st day – 4 mile walk, 1.5 hours, 25 stair cases, 8,808 steps.
Have gained 8lbs but I am not going to let that break my spirit. Will plan my weeks menu tonight or tomorrow, food shopping tomorrow, then batch cook some meals. AND of course do my 1 hours walk. DDP Yoga as well.
Jackieppp and Tattiescone how ya doing? Happy 2017 to you all. -

on 1 Jan 2017 at 17:37 in Welcome to the BSDProfessor Taylor’s Newcastle University study is still underway; results are due to be published in 2018, when the study is complete.
They had an initial study with 11 patients, the results were released in 2015, which I understand has lead to the current medical trial with a larger body of 270 patients.Until that point, the NHS is likely to stick to its current advice – that doesn’t mean that you or anyone else has to follow it, the BSD book and this site are readily available.
I am not sure what you expect to see when you call for a “proper study”, other than the medical research that is currently underway?
A new trial would take at least 3 years to complete, let alone the time to find funding, set up, recruit patients, and get started – so maybe 2021 at the earliest.Yes, it’s frustrating to see earlier advice still being given – but I am happy to live with a government and health service that waits until appropriate medial research is complete before changing its guidelines.
I also consider it frustrating that £2.5m of the research costs have to be funded by a charity (Diabetes UK) rather than by the Government – but because it is not a drug based trial, pharmaceutical companies are hardly going to be queueing up to fund it. -

on 1 Jan 2017 at 17:31 in Starting the BSDHi Alice, I decided to start yesterday as I couldn’t eat anymore starchy crap, l think I would have exploded. I have done the 5:2 diet previously and really liked it, it is surprising that once you have got used to telling your stomach that it is not in control but your head is it simply stops giving you a hard time. Hunger simply comes then goes, in the end the hard bit is deciding if you should eat now or in an hour because you are in total control, all the carb cravings vanish, you do have to be a little patient at the start but it is liberating. Initially make sure you have things like marmite or cup a soups just to pacify your urges. Anyway good luck and don’t over hipe the start it’s no big deal.

I have been doing the low-carb Mediterranean diet since October and have lost 10lbs but I seem to have hit a plateau and I still don’t like my belly so I’m bringing out the big guns – BSD 800! I am also doing a ‘dry’ January because I know the alcohol just mounts up the calories and I also want to challenge myself to do it – I have a suspicion that might end up being the hardest part.
Good luck to everyone- we can do this.

on 1 Jan 2017 at 16:43 in Starting the BSDHi I’m starting the 8 week plan on January 7th, having been told 5 yrs ago I was borderline diabetic, and now recently being told blood sugars out of control and have liver damage. Very nervous about it all, and, having very little self confidence, not convinced I can make it. So glad I’ve found this website, hopefully will keep me going!

Lynne – have just got back from the second walk of the day – it is cold and very wet here in East Anglia. Luckily my waterproofs are very good but my legs got very cold – will wear some thermal leggings under the waterproof trousers for my next walk.
Have done just under 9K steps so far. All walking does count and it is surprising how much walking you can do around the house and the shops.

hello to all the nice and supportive people here! I think I could do with some support too as I am starting the diet tomorrow Jan 2nd… my family is the truly negative type (“we don’t see you losing the weight any time soon”) and my friends are not very supportive (“but you look alright, what’s the problem?”).
I am female, 39 yo. I want to lose 26 pound (12 kilos) by mid April which is when I have a holiday coming up. I am 5’3 and currently 159 pound (72 kilos). My long term goal is to be 123 pound (56 kilos) but if I am 132 pound by mid April I will be very happy. My motto is “rule yourself” and I will do my best to stick to it even without help from close friends and family. I am also planning to do more exercise but that’s for March, after I have gone through the initial changes in diet etc.
If anyone would like to buddy up for the next 2 or 3 months, it would be great. Good luck to all! -
I allowed myself some respite leading up to and over Christmas. The rate at which I can feel my clothes have tightened is alarmingly!
Hey ho. Back on it from tomorrow and hope to reverse any weight gain and go on the lose a second stone having already lost and maintained (until the Christmas food and alcohol over indulgence) a 19 Ilb weight loss.
I think my body will be in shock, I expect to feel some of the starchy carb and sugar withdrawal that I felt when I first started it. It’s made me think that I don’t have a good relationship with either of these food groups. I’ve easily slipped right back in to consuming too much of both.
I wonder what is the secret to successful long term control (I was never looking for complete abstentions into the future as I am not diabetic) when eating these foods? I’ve long thought that for me, they are addictive. The more I have, the more I want.
I’m hoping to find the resolve that I started with so that getting back to it isn’t too painful 😕 -

Like lots of people, I’ve not stuck on the straight and narrow in recent days. Not easy at this time of year. But I’m really looking forward to getting back on the wagon – maybe not the 800 calories but certainly the general principles – because like you, I feel so well on this diet. I too am not diabetic.
Clouds66, what an amazing inspiration you are to others. Potentially a life saver.
Hope you both have a great 2017. -
Happy New Year (Start!) for everyone.
My weigh-in is tomorrow. I’m a WW goal member for the last 10 yrs. However, the last year I found my midriff was growing although the weight only fluctuated up or down by a few pounds. Having seen a friend do really well on the BSD I got the book and read it while away. I returned from a 10 week trip to Australia just before Christmas and followed the book for a week and lost 6 of the 8 pounds I put on whilst away. Although I relaxed a couple of days before Christmas by Christmas Day I felt uncomfortable. So much so I cut back immediately and feel much better for doing so.
So my challenge is to lose my belly fat and reduce my weight down as I’ve always been at the upper end of my target for my height.
I’m glad everyone is sharing their experiences…this helps with the motivation. I came on here now as I was beginning to think about what I could eat!! Having read through the posts the urge to eat is passing…..thanks.So we’ve got this ….2017 we can smash this!

on 1 Jan 2017 at 15:46 in Welcome to the BSDIf you read the advice given by NHS regarding Type2 diets, you will see that they are still pushing out that diet should be based on ‘bread, pasta, potatoes and rice’. I have written to my MP to complain about this, and he has taken it to a health minister. I think this should be fought tooth and nail, till a proper study has been done, Prof. Muir Gray is adamant that the advice is correct, despite the evidence given by Dr. Michael Mosely, and Prof. Roy Taylor. Gray is simply killing some people or at least losing them limbs, by his incorrect advice. I ask all who have tried the ‘800 Blood Sugar Diet’ to write to their MPs giving the results of their diet. Lets stop the NHS listening to Pharmacutical companies giving the Goverment biased advice to advance their profits.

Have you tried the cauli rice with curry and bolognaise? We either blitz it in the processor or chop. Cover the bowl and microwave for about 2-3 mins. Its really tasty. I have not missed rice at all. Get well soon
-
I’ve stopped taking it for now – Yes I risk the chance of my levels going up (and I have bought a cheap machine anyway) but as I think I said elsewhere already, If this diet works they way people say it does. I won’t be putting myself at risk anyway.

First day – nearly 1.5L water down (soda stream with cordial, win!- although my doctor tells me Coke Zero is fine for anyone who still wants to drink it, it’s basically the same)
Porridge for brekky – Michael’s perfect scrambled eggs for lunch with loads of mushrooms. Med Chicken casserole in the slow cooker for later – total for today 778Cals. Not hungry, not dizzy, so far so good.
I think because we did it a few months ago and did have the headaches etc then for about a day we missed it this time?

Now with this diet I am going to get rid of the needles and any tablets (I take gliczide in the morning), even if my diabetes does not reverse I will become reliant only on diet which should have been tried in the first place; only thing is the diet they recommended (high carb) only made the diabetes worse: Looking forward to an insulin free new year. Most people start on diet treatment then move to meds then to insulin. I am doing it the other way round. Strange.
