    Good Morning All!

This is my first check-in since my original post the other day, and I’m so inspired by the sharing of ideas and experiences from everyone. It’s so helpful to read about everyone’s struggles, reasons for being here, and tips and tricks.

I eased into the diet on New Years Eve and hit it hard yesterday. This morning I’m down 3 pounds!!!! Love it!

I’m 57, T2 diabetic and preparing for surgery to repair a hernia that resulted from a hysterectomy. Failure rates of hernia repair are remarkably high for my comfort level so I’m determined to drop 40 pounds before the surgery. I need to lose 100 pounds to be at my optimum health but I don’t know if I can postpone the surgery that long. I check in with the surgeon again in mid-March and I’d like to be able to show him my weight loss success, and then plan the procedure from there.

When I told a friend about the BSD, she loaned me her Atkins for Life book, and it makes a lot of sense. Very similar to the BSD, with lots of low carb information and food lists. A wonderful tool is their Carb Counter. It’s several pages long with lists of foods and their net carbs. Their website drives me nuts but you can find the carb counter by typing “carb counter” into their search box at http://www.atkins.com

I was surprised by how the carbs add up from bell peppers, onions and edamame. I had always adopted the WW attitude that I never needed to count any vegetables, that they were “free”. But yesterday I topped right up with veggies and hit 30 net grams of carbs from veggies alone. I’d never previously considered asparagus a “carb” veggie. Not really high compared to a potato, but not zero either. Quite the eye opener!!!

I too am reading these posts first thing each morning. What a great inspiration to start the day!

    Thanks everyone, and good luck!!!

  • Thank you Verano and Daiseysmum for the welcome. I notice there are a few ‘diet’ programmes coming up on television. Normally I would be anticipating these programmes and willing them to be THE ONE for me. This is the first year I haven’t felt like that. I’m not interested in them as I feel I have found THE ONE ( unless of course there is a BSD programme).
I weighed at the gym this morning and included the body fat %age. I was horrified! I really hope this BSD gets rid of the visceral fat. I will weigh each Monday at the gym and hope to see the body fat %age go down! I’ll let you know!

Hello Time to change. I’m in a similar position – back on the 800 from today. I have gained over Xmas but I knew that I would – I did not restrict what I ate or drank in any way. I am learning how food affects me so that I can eat as I choose at times like Xmas…Good luck!

I’m feeling hungry & empty as well Sarah & PatC! I don’t eat breakfast so lunch of vegetables soup, a thin slice of ham, some left over duck rillette with four thin French toast things, I know carbs!, & a small apple & lots of coffee & water. Last night I was so hungry I had some Wensleydale cheese & that took my calories up to around 950! But much lower than New Years Eve. My husband ate left over Christmas pudding with brandy cream for pudding after his lunch!
For supper today I am planning using left over roast beef into MM’s recipe of beef stir fry with bought cauliflower rice from Marks & Spencer’s. I have also bought size 14 trousers in the M & S sale to hang on my wardrobe as an incentive to get into them asap.
I am feeling a bit deprived at the moment & keep thinking of the butterscotch icecream in the freezer & trying to balance that thought in getting below 12 stone by the end of eight weeks🤔 Oh & also weighing less than my husband! 😎It’s a bit difficult today!
Our sitting room is looking rather bare now without the Christmas tree because we have taken down all the decorations this afternoon. At least the sun has shone today & it’s not raining but is rather chilly & is supposed to drop to -5c overnight.
I know I will need everyones support to get back into the swing of things & perhaps getting back to our normal routines will help.

  • Jan that sounds really exciting! I think you may have mentioned a while back that you were thinking of buying the barns. It may be a bit if a slog but I’m sure it will all be worth it in the end.

As for BSD I can understand not feeling as good as you did a few months might be a problem. Once you start packing up and begin your move I’m sure you’ll be so busy, especially with that new wheelbarrow, that you will start to feel better. Maybe you shouldn’t worry too much about weight loss and rather just try to stick to no simple carbs. There are only so many things you can take onboard at a time. Moving and building is really quite stressful but at least you live with the builder!!!

How long do you think it will take to complete?

Oh deary me..December hast cost me a10 lb gain 🙁 Was expecting maybe 8 but hoping for less. However, I know I can soon get back on track. I am now looking to lose 24 lbs (instead of 14!) Today is day 1 of my new year re boot. I’m looking at the walking challenge, considering C25k but not started yet. I am quite active anyway so not too worried about exercise. Off work this week – I find routine helps so next week will be easier! When is you colour session Lynn?

Hi everyone, this is an excellent thread. I’m not quite a newbie having already done 8 weeks in the run up to Christmas. The benefits are amazing once you get past the tough days in the beginning. You’ll have no regrets if you stick with it. I did fine the first week, then hit a wall for a few days – (it got tough!) then suddenly I woke up one morning feeling like an entirely new person, so much energy and alertness, I honestly feel 20 years younger ( I’m 61). For more ideas of the hidden benefits I suggest taking a look at the thread called Unintended Consequences, it will raise a smile or two.

I’ve just got back into it following a break over Christmas. I only ate BSD friendly food, just rather large portions and LOTS of snacking (my bete noir). My aim is to reduce or come off meds (under medical supervision) and become an even fitter healthier person.

I wish all first timers the best of everything, I hope that like me you will find this to be one of the best decisions you ever make. Stick with it even if you falter, I’m sure you won’t regret it. And to the continuers or those starting again after a break, keep going, the only failure is to stop because of a hiccough or two 🙂

    Great stuff Lainie.

Have had an okay day here (I live in Dubai). Breakfast was soya yoghurt with sour cherries. Lunch was a goats cheese, hazelnut and baby spinach salad. Dinner was poached haddock in dashi (Japanese fish stock) with Barenaked noodles which are my life-saver in the early and/or hungry days. (A big packet – enough for two people – is around 20 kcals and 0 carbs. But I scoff the lot!) I will have had around 2.5 litres of water by the time I go to bed too. No other drinks. Everything logged like a ninja on MFP!

To be fair, I am not hungry. But it’s more a mental struggle isn’t it? It is in my case for sure. I’m a bit of a foodie and don’t eat meat, eggs or (usually) dairy (the goats cheese is a fridge hangover from the New Year) so I have to keep pushing myself to invent new meals so that I don’t get bored and revert to carb-stuffing type. I bought the recipe book at Xmas though (finally!) and can see it’s going to be a big help.

I agree that being organised is key – and in my case, a few packets of Barenaked noodles and a big bottle of Diet Coke as munchies back-up for the harder early days.

    Ploughing on!!!

    Hi Sarah and ‘ThisIsFifty!

So great to have you on board! 5 stone is achievable and it will make such a difference to how we feel. I’m taking a photo of my face every day – my face really bloats up when I put on weight – and a full body pic every time I lose a stone.

I’m back to work tomorrow so for a change am pitting my own needs first – sorting out my clothes, my lunch and my job list. I know that by being organised, it will keep my stress levels down and should help me find time for good nutrition.

I had scrambled eggs, grilled tomato and 1 slice of Bury black pudding for lunch and have made a vegetable soup for dinner. I’ll add in some gammon. I’ve had 2 satsumas as a snack and am focussing on upping my water intake today – I”vet been drinking far too much fizzy over Xmas – even though it is calorie free it’s a costly and probably not very healthy habit. I’m also going to get into my habit of having fresh lemon and fresh mint in hot or sparkling water – it’s really lovely.

Right off now to log my food – let me know how you are getting on ladies!

    hi Cowpat

Are they sure? I’ve done NHS 111 pathways training and and I can tell you that it’s view is 3.9- is hypoglycemic, 4-7 and normal and 9+ is hyperglycemic.

As a T2D I managed to get mine down to 6.2 once. I never kept it there but it’s considerd to be in normal range as far as mmol/l I wouldn’t take their word for it as 6.4 is too high when it;s in the normal range.

Yes the machine is a good idea. I have also just ordered new one and it’s coming tomorrow.

While visiting my daughter and family in North Carolina over the Christmas holiday, I took part in their nightly dinner ritual where each person shares the peak and pit of their day. So I’m going to post the peak and pit of each day as I follow the BSD. Please join me as it is a great way to share how things are going with each other. You can list more than one peak or pit (sometimes it’s hard to decide what is the biggest peak or pit of your day; sometimes there are a lot of them)

Here is my first peak and pit entry~

    January 1, 2017:

PEAK: Used my spiralizer for the first time since buying it over a year ago. I turned a zucchini into noodles and made a marinara creme sauce with ground beef to go over them. It was so delicious! Now I’m looking for more recipes to use for my spiralizer.

PIT: Missed my workout goal by just a few calories. I’m using my apple watch activity counter and have a goal of making the bullseye everyday for the next 10 weeks. Yesterday I earned a move calorie score of 312 out of 330. I aim to make all three rings today!

    Hello all,
I have more than 130 lbs to lose and it seems like an impossible task right now. I have recently retired so have more time to devote to health, but do not want to get into bad habits! I am so happy to see this forum as I need all the help and support I can get. I l keep being told that ‘we need carbs’ and that I should not consider doing a low carb diet. I am determined to prove to these people that this is the way to go. I intend to start my new way of living on 9th January. I am worried about al the loose skin and flappy bits when losing a lot of weight – no one ever seems to mention this little problem. Still one step at a time!

  • We are the lucky ones to have found a diet plan that actually works. If medics are not going to promote it and sometimes they have their hands tied, so not their fault, then it is up to us. My doctor is all for it but does not think his other patients would have the strength of will that I do and how many people have you spoken to who have said yes it sounds brilliant but I couldn’t live without chips; bread, or something that they could clearly live better without. Even when you tell people it can fall on deaf ears because people cannot believe what we are doing is possible. Someone told me that I couldn’t have had real diabetes, no I just enjoyed injecting myself in the stomach every evening. We just have to try and convince people and look after ourselves in the best way we know how.

I know of 3 medical people who have heard of this, seen it work in their patients and do tell other people to try it. From little acorns etc and others will just have to wait for the research to become widely accepted.

  • Hi Verano.

My serious challenge, is a month ago we brought a couple of derelict ancient barns in Norfolk, and I am in the process of selling my business and my husband john and me will be living on the site and doing it up, he’s a builder and fit although 60 in Feb , I’m 59 and not very fit, and 5 stone still too heavy for my height, work will start in Feb, and I will move up there with him in April when my business is all sorted, and house packed up etc, so no pressure, but need to feel how I felt in September, when I stopped the plan, I felt physically and mentally strong, I feel weak physically, and struggling to get motivated.

He says my best friend will be my shiny new wheelbarrow, he is buying me, hehe but seriously can’t wait, as it’s going to be our home hopefully. But need to get organised with the plan again. So glad you are still going strong.

    Regards
    Jan 😊

The body slows digestion during sleep, but I’m not sure that that would be considered as starvation in the true sense of the word.

I have a friend who is a powerlifter (to international standard). He has a protein shake in the morning but his goal is to have enough protein in his system to support morning training sessions, not in response to any loss of muscle during sleep.

It is true that an active person on 800 kcals per day and a fairly active lifestyle will be in serious calorie deficit and there is a risk of converting muscle to glycogen. That’s why many on here do some weight or resistance training to conserve muscle mass. You just have to see how you get on.

    Hi,

It seems to be known that during the sleep time the body is in “starvation” and consumes muscle as fuels that’s why bodybuilders seems to drink shakers of pure protein after wake up to stop this process.

But I can read this in the book:

“but because you will be eating two meals on those days you can get away with it. There is the added advantage that you will have fasted for about 14 hours overnight.”

Does it mean that my body (by reducing daily intakes to 800kcal) will consume muscle as well as fat I guess but the aim is not to reduce muscle mass right?

    Any thoughts ?

    Thank you

Good Luck Timetochange – you know you can do this, as you have had great results before. Time to refocus and get back on track. I too will be back on the Fast 800 from tomorrow.
If you are unable to control the amount of carbs you consume, perhaps you need to think in terms of complete banishment long term. Carbs by their very nature, as addictive as they spike your blood sugar and when that dips, you crave more. I never thought of myself as addicted to carbs, but found cutting them out harder than expected. Having achieved that, I am reluctant to allow myself to go back to my old way of eating.
So, now f I allow myself a little chocolate or a small roast potato and am tempted to go for more, I force myself to think about if I really need or want it and what the potential consequence may be. And actually, over time my pallet has changed so much now, that actually I very rarely want (or if I give in – enjoy) high carb foods. Stick with it long enough and this might well happen for you too.
Hope your new venture into the BSD is successful and look forward to reading your positive results soon.

Think you are right Jenni, the evidence is staring everyone in the face, but to alter the advise being given means admitting they got it completely wrong in the first place. And of course, it’s not in the interest of the pharmaceuticals, that people make the change and no longer need their drugs, so they will not be helping to fund diet research – too risky.

It would be nice to think that everyone here will lobby their MP about the flawed advice still being churned out, but it’s unlikely to happen. Last year someone on the forum started a Parliamentary Petition and asked everyone to sign it online, with a view to winning enough signatures to force the matter to be raised in Parliament. Sadly, it got no where near enough signatures.

Think the best thing we can do, is encourage people who might need it, to give the BSD a try. Lots of people have asked me how I have lost weight – and more importantly, been able to maintain it – and I have encourage them to take a look at the BSD and give it a go.

  • we head back to France tonight so one last restaurant meal. When we get home tomorrow night I have a spag bol in the freezer ready to defrost. A couple of glasses of relaxing wine after our 7hour drive from the ferry port, then all set to restart on Wednesday. See you all when I get home.

BG has hit 5.2 on 2 days and every other day has been under 5.0. I am so happy about that. Will let you know my weight on Wednesday morning.

Just another data point for Krysia’s comments on fatty liver disease. I had a blood test in July which showed I had high BS and the symptoms of a non-alcoholic fatty liver. I went on BSD in August and started seriously at the start of Sept. I had an ultrasound and full bloods in November having lost about three and a half stone. The fatty liver tests were normal, which the doctor ascribed directly to the rapid weight loss. I have the next HBA1C test in the next couple of weeks so we’ll see what that says….

Hi healthier me and everyone else. I’m new to this too. I discovered Michael’s book this Christmas and am gobsmacked! I’ve started the 8 week 800 cal diet this morning (2nd). My wife is supporting me by having a go too although she doesn’t need to. A family member who is type1 diabetic checked my sugar levels and they were 6.4, too high. I’ve ordered a blood sugar monitor and awaiting it’s arrival.
I hope someone can help with this one. I cannot find anything in the book or on the website about drinks. I like tea and use skimmed milk. I’ve just checked the sugar content of it and it’s not good. Anyone know any alternatives.
Weighed myself this morning 16.5 stones 6’0 tall. Hoping to get to 13 stone.
    Good luck all.

    Hi Granny
The veggies that I have found are almost free from net carbs are curly leaf kale, mushrooms, celery, spinach, aubergine and lettuce so I tend to make sure I eat plenty of them.

Veggies a little bit higher in net carbs are avocado, asparagus, courgette and white cabbage. But they are not that much higher so I tend to eat a lot of them also.

The ones that are much higher are carrots, tomatoes, leeks and onions – all of which I love, but tend to have smaller portions of them in a meal. I eat absolutely loads of non-starchy vegetables and when I started using fat secret I was quite shocked at how the net carbs mounted up.

    Pcoventry
It is puzzling that your doctor says the machines are unreliable. I have two Aviva monitors (from the NHS) and although their readings vary slightly they are very close.

You are right that once the viseral fat goes from around your organs T2D will be history.

In 2000 I was being checked by ultrasound for a possible gall bladder problem. It was flagged up that I had much too much fat in my liver and other organs and told to lose weight but my doctors never mentioned once that I was at risk of T2D nor did they do a blood test to check if I already had diabetes. So probably I did have T2D for quite a long time before I was diagnosed – but even though that might be the case it still worked for me. So good luck on your journey.

    Hi guys.
I am coming back to BSD starting today. I did it for 4 weeks Oct-Nov and lost 15 lbs. I found the diet really easy to do and didn’t suffer any side effects and still managed my daily gym work out. Additionally, as soon as I increased my food intake the weight did not automatically pile on. What I will say is that you have to be prepared for plateaus. They seem to happen quite randomly and you lose nothing for days and then suddenly, another 3 lb is gone. Stick with it. I have now gone a bit off the rails over Christmas but hope to be back to where I was within the next 7-10 days. I know it works. Good luck xx

    Morning all

Thanks for all the tips and advice and a huge HUGE thanks to both Linda & Krysia for their inputs. Really an eye opener. I have just re adjusted tomorrow’s shopping list to include blueberrys and extra virgin olive oil for cooking.

We (my wife is also doing this with me) have noticed that the receipe book is all full fat but we are going to replace anything that says “butter” with olive oil and just see how we go. Just had 2 boiled eggs for breakfast, out the shell into gob, no washing up to do – a million bonus’s there!

Your story Krysia really does inspire me. My eyes have been fine so far and I have been eating meat and veg for my tea for years now. I have bought myself another machine because I took a screenshot in 2013 of my levels being 6.2 (started at 9.7 back in 2012) and if so many people tel me this is normal range? But my doctor says my levels have gone up and then chucks me more pills. She also tells me the home testing kits are unreliable, maybe they are on commission or under pressure to chuck me pills?

Anyway Stuff the Metformin, not going to happen while I am on 800. Even the leaflet says so!. I know this diet will work, You’ve shown me it will work. So I will take the risk and put them in the drawer for now. I have a review in Feb and I will be doing a test at home the same day I have it taken at the docs, and if my machine is anywhere near the reading I get from the docs I will be telling my doctor that she was wrong to discount them.

I am 5 foot 8 and 15 stone 11 at the start of this – so I am not big big but I am also dying to get this fat off my organs, which, if I understand this right, should lower/control/kill my T2D!

Speak to you all again tomorrow – this is my daily internet now!

This is day 2 for me and I’ve added in some walking already. Quite a change for me but I’ve got an easy week so it’s simple to add it in. It’s cool, about 12 degrees, but very sunny so I feel I’m topping up my vitamin D at the same time. Can anyone recommend an easy fitbit please?

I’ve cut out breakfast this time and am looking forward to a hearty vegetable soup for lunch with fish and cauliflower rice for dinner.

Granny, there are some nice poster type pictures of low carb and not so low carb foods on Diet Doctor. I keep meaning to print them off..

Thank you LyndaA and Krysia for the informative posts..

    Have a good day!

  • At last its not raining here in East Anglia. Am off for my morning walk in brilliant sunshine. Am back at work on Wednesday and because I stand and walk while I teach its much easier to get the steps in. Yesterday I did 3 walks in the rain – not very pleasant but I did 12K.

Today menu planned on fat secret – so another lovely BSD day.

This will be my first round of the BSD and I’m doing this for mainly health reasons (although I’d love to lose some weight and shrink down too!). I have severe brittle asthma and some degenerative disc problems in my spine both of which cause me no end of trouble – the asthma especially. In the last 6 months I’ve been hospitalized 6 times on the respiratory ward, mostly via ambulance and the Resus part of A and E which is not a place anyone likes to frequent. When the doctors there know younits definitely a bad thing! Although I don’t have diabetes I suspect I’m in the pre category and I don’t want to get into the fully there point. I’m a mum to two small children (5 and 3 years old) and currently I am off work due to my severe breathing issues – I very much want to get back to my job which is teaching and my work are keen to get me back too!

Previously I’ve followed weight watchers with some success and slimming world with not much (portion control is an issue) but this recent batch of ill health has had my weight pile on worse than ever with high daily dose of steroid tablets and an inability to exercise. I’ve got around 6 stone to lose in total, but really my main goal is improving my breathing and general health. I have a dairy allergy so all forms of milk products are out to me (allergy not intolerance which also applies to goats milk / sheeps milk etc).

Anyway, I’ve started my day with a brunch of 2 poached eggs, grilled tomato and mushrooms and half a sliced avocado. 450 calories including some extra virgin olive oil for cooking and cracked pepper for taste. Yum! I have a cinema trip to negotiate (no popcorn for me) later today. I’ll update later and would be glad of buddies who want to team up for support etc or just to cheer each other on ^_^

  • Hi Verano *waves*

I’ve had a think, and a look round my house – small, modern with not much space – and had to decide that realistically there’s nowhere to put a treadmill😱 No point in spending all that money on something I couldn’t have easily available for use – because I wouldn’t! Ho hum. Another good idea bites the dust.

I’m going to be brave and go out soon – very frosty here. Normally stay in on Bank Holidays because of irregular buses, but need to get some exercise.

    Enjoy day.

Morning! This is my first day of trying this plan. My only objective is to free myself of my carb addiction! Losing weight will be good as well! I’m going to try 5:2 as I’ve been following that fasting plan for some years. However, the menopause has hit and the weight is piling on! So, a complete re-think is needed. And here I am!

  • Hi Lynne I’m going to give my treadmill a go but not too sure I’ll be able to manage it even on the slowest speed! Anyway nothing ventured nothing gained!

A point of interest …. another course on Futurelearn.com ‘The science of nutrition’ , starts next Monday for 4 weeks and ‘explores the science behind what we eat’. May be interesting I’ve signed up …. nothing ventured nothing gained!!!!

I always make ‘reading the BSD’ posts my first activity of a morning, mainly because I like to catch up with other BSDers around the world and to kickstart my motivation for the day, whilst sipping my first lemon water of the day. And WOW what an inspirational read from LindaA and KrysiaD, congratulations and well dine in you fab weight losses and managing to keep it off! I’m sure I will definately be asking you lots of questions whilst on my BSD journey🤔,……the first one being what are the best veggies to eat? Its confusing as on other diets eg WW most veg can be eaten in plentiful! Thanks for the tip about honey too, I have been putting a small spoon on my yoghurt and berry breakfast, but no more…….
