Pat – I think you should change your name to Cake_Addict, hahaha. Seriously though, you know the early-onset grumpiness is all par for the course and you know you’ll come out the other side if you just stick to the plan.

Meanwhile in Dubai, the scales show 100g increase overnight. I actually laughed at that given I know there’s no way I have put on ‘real’ weight after a day of restricted calories and carbs. I probably would have cried before and given up at a gain on the first day, but I am wiser than this now and am in no doubt that it is hormone-related. What goes up will come down (if I starve it of sugar and carbs!)

Today’s food plan looks like this:
Breakfast: soya yoghurt with roasted hazelnut pieces and a tiny amount of sour cherries mixed in (yum)
Lunch: Lentil and goat’s cheese salad (adapted from the lentil and feta salad in the recipe book)
Dinner: Fillet of honey smoked salmon (barely any honey in it: I checked) and a large green salad
Drinks: 3 litres of water with lemon
Exercise: 45 mins brisk Vitamin D walk at lunchtime

Thinking of joining you on the 1000 mile challenge. Going to research it online!

    Onwards!! (Hang in there Pat!!!)

  • Hi all,

63.5kg this morning after 63.2 yesterday. 63.7kg last Tuesday. I’m circling around at the moment instead of descending but I’m still here.

Well done those who stayed on plan or are back on plan…..good going:)

Tigs, not to sound preachy, but you’re still here……and I think the analogy would be it’s not the number of hurdles you fall at that count, its the number of times you stand up afterwards. That’s what I’m holding onto at this moment…..good luck with the next hurdle xx

    Hi LizV
All part of the ‘carb flu’ I’m afraid. Not everyone suffers from all the symptoms, but this one has been noted before.

Do what you can to get through it, it won’t last long. Go for a walk, have a bubble bath, read a book, go to bed early. It will pass.
Let us know how you go.
    Cheers

Hi all! My husband and I officially started our 8 weeks today. I started a couple days ago because I didn’t want to wait. Overall I’ve been feeling great, but today (Day 3) I had some angry irritated moments. I felt angry that I couldn’t eat almost to the point of rage, which was startling. I have been addicted to sugar for a long time and typically eat lots of carbs, pasta, potatoes, chips, bread, etc. I believe in this and am committed to sticking with it for my health, but today was rough! I ended up cancelling evening plans. Anyone else experiencing this or have any tips?

  • Yes Kitte Nole quite a few people over 68 who are doing or have done BSD. I was 68 when commenced at end of August 2016. Lost 10.5kgs in the eight weeks and another 4kgs since then doing 4:3. Best of all have reversed my diabetes for the time being at least, (research to date says if people had diabetes for more than 5 years it may not be as successful longer term). Age is no barrier to good health via BSD.

  • Hi all, fell at the first hurdle which was a shared dinner yesterday with friends and families. Even though I had planned carefully, it all went out the window at the time. To be honest, the whole Christmas season with loads of family staying has been lovely on one hand, but very stressful on the other (chief cook and bottle washer!). So I have lapsed into ‘stressy’ eating now and then. 1st Jan was great, 2nd a flop, today the 3rd, on track and determined. We are not back to normal in this household until the 12th so I have to be strong.

LindaA that was such a win with your visitor – hope he is a convert too!

    You are going well Daisiesmum!

topcac, I’m right with you, go well this week!

Everyone else, loving your updates xx

I’m starting my 4th week tomorrow and was feeling hungry, really hungry all the time until Captainlynne suggested I eat more carbs while keeping the calories under 800. My daughter-in-law is really into the LCHF diet and I discussed it with her too. She has helped me get the balance right. I’m not hungry anymore by eating upto 50 carbs a day and under 800 calories. Can’t wait for my weighin tomorrow morning. My blood sugar levels are wonderful and my early morning fasting level was terrific at 4.9 this morning. I’m really pleased with this and would love to join in here. Enjoy your journies people.

I have book and recipe book- ready to begin tomorrow 1/3/2017- I live in Florida- need to lose 30 lbs before a wonderful Africa trip in September. Want to feel better, have more energy and not hurt my knees, hips, and not develop diabetes. Working out with a trainer for 30 minutes 2 times a week. I am 68 years old, female- anyone else older on here? Ready to get started.

  • Hello All, I’m just back from holidays and would love to do this four week challenge too. I am almost finished my first 3 weeks on the program and I’m doing well so far. I’ll be so glad when my book arrives. The recipe book arrived. So that has given me so many wonderful ideas. I’m enjoying working with it. Tomorrow I weigh in for the end of my three weeks. So then I will start this challenge. So good to read all your posts and pick up some very helpful information and ideas.

Lost a little weight this morning, but to be honest ready to chew my arm off, hating the carb withdrawal and craving for cake, biscuits, cheese……and drinking so much water, but, had a better lunch today – more MM than ‘what’s in the fridge – that will do’!

Margaret – how’s it going? It’s the leftover goodies that are the killers, my husband sat in front of me last night and ate a huge slice of Christmas pudding with cream – he has one more slice to go -I have frozen all of the rest of the Christmas cake, ice cream is gone and won’t be replaced for a few weeks, husband is on dry Jan mon-fri which will be killing him but he’s as skinny as a lat and can eat anything – which makes up for not drinking alcohol – he is so slim and never puts on a pound – sickening, but-

Feel less bloated ed this morning, scales down a tiny bit, no indigestion, no achy legs – plus points

Want cake, so hungry, sick of water – negative points, rant over x want cake, sorry to go on and on about cake!

  • Huge thanks orchid.
To be honest, I have been putting off posting on here as most people I come into contact with think vegans/veggies are health freaks so felt embarrassed. I eat wonderful, fresh, nutritious foods but always follow with sugar laden, vegan cookies, cereals, ice creams… You probably get the picture.

So before I posted I used the search option and read through many vegan/veggie posts (including some of yours). These inspired me to bite the bullet and post. Clearly there are vegans in the same boat.

Background – I love fresh, home cooked foods and always cook from scratch. I eat too much sugar. I am pre diabetic and have non alcoholic fatty liver disease. I’m 2 stone overweight but I do love to walk however, I ‘reward’ myself handsomely afterwards.

I return from travel on Friday. Will shop (hence the research now) ready to start on Saturday.

Hoping I can shed the 2 stone, continue to walk and rid myself of my health issues.

I have also posted on the ‘starting January 2017’ thread. Someone mentioned Alpro almond yogurt. Sounds appealing (maybe for my breakfast with the nut/seed mix you recommend). Need to check sugar/carb content though.

Would it be wrong to have a square of 90% Lindt dark choc per day?

    Thanks again. Much appreciated.

3CS – thanks again. I’ll try that with the almond milk.
Just out of interest, does the approach almond contain sugar/have a high carb content?

Daisies mum – thanks for the nut info. It’s almonds not cashews that I’m partial to, so I’ll need to check carb content for them. Crazy I know, but had forgotten about the olive oil. Will add to my shop list.

Mara – I start on 7th when I return from travel. Will shop for appropriate foods Friday and commence Saturday.
See you in the 9th when you start.

    Best wishes all.

  • Hi everyone,
    Happy New Year.
Day three for me today, and so far so good. Only found this all last week, and bought book and recipe book so just using those to plan meals etc. Enjoying food very much, and no dire side effects so far. So glad my husband has joined me with this, so much easier at meal times.
But I do have one question about the fast weight loss that the book suggests might happen…….. does this cause a ‘lose skin problem’? At 58 my skin is not what it used to be, but with 4 stone to lose (well about that – my aim is to get my waist size down to half my height – so 10″ needs to disappear…. yikes). We are doing exercise, but mainly walking until I find a local swimming pool to use.
Have a job sitting in front of a computer, so may well use one of the other posters idea of setting an alarm to make sure I move around every hour.
Off to bed now, thanks to anyone who can contribute to ‘baggy skin’ issues.
    Cheers.

  • Hi Way of life
I did the BSD as a vegetarian – there are a number of posts by me in this thread and others and I still keep an eye on these threads and will try to help if I can.
The main things to remember is that you are not looking for a low fat option on anything, so higher fat options like nuts and avocado are welcome and filling. I assume you have been vegan for a while and you will be using dairy replacements such as nut ‘milks’ etc – again fine – but always check they the packaging for added sugars and if you have a choice of a couple of different ones, take the lowers carbs. Soya products of all types are ok – again the proviso – check for sugars. All pulses are fine and they fill you up, with sides of green vegetables. What you will find harder is getting a very low daily carb – however I found 60-65g carbs per day would give me enough protein from non meats and I was losing on average 2kg a week. In all I lost 4.5 stone last year from Feb to October with a 6 week break in the middle.
If you have posted some background elsewhere then please direct me to that so I can read it. The main things are – do you normally cook from scratch, or do you eat shop prepared food?
The specifics you have mentioned – Coya coconut yoghurt – I looked it up and the carbs for 125g pot is 4.9g with 25g fats so that will be filling and low carbs. The calories are around 275 per pot – that I over a quarter of your daily target so use carefully. It would work well for breakfast. My standard breakfast is 60ml full fat yoghurt, 3g pumpkin seeds, 3g sunflower seeds, 3g linseeds, 30g blueberries all mixed together with 3 chopped almonds on top and a dash o f cinnamon. The coya yoghurt is a bit higher calories so that would be around 200 cals for breakfast which is fine.
If you use the search engine on here for butter beans, there is a great soup recipe someone posted for tomato and butterbean soup that has smoked paprika and cayenne pepper for flavouring that is quick and easy to make and very tasty.
Anyhow – fire off further questions and background and good luck.

Hi Jim, well done for taking accountability and for taking action.

Sugar is something that I can’t control the consumption of when I’m given the opportunity to eat it. I’m slowly coming around to the idea that I might have to permanently part ways with it.

I had lost 30.5Kg but my recent 10 day sugar binge saw me gain 4.4Kg! I’m still only 6Kg to target but I’ve learned a valuable lesson about sugar.

All the best for your BSD return.

I can sympathise with your plight Timetochange. I gained almost a pound a day over the festive period and that was without alcohol.

I also completed my first day back on the fast 800 today and it felt like putting a comfy old shoe on (I’ve only been off plan for 10 days total).

I did want to enjoy everything I ate over Christmas and didn’t restrict calorie intake. It was a useful exercise because I felt the frenzied carb monster having their fill when the opportunity arose and it happened solely on sugary carbs. All starchy or savoury refined carbs were easily withheld from or restricted in their volume.

I’m still trying to figure out what maintenance might look like. The past few days has valuably taught me that I probably can’t re-introduce sugar safely in any quantity.

Hi Way of life the vegan quorn is quite new and does not contain eggs. I also use alpro unsweetened soya milk in my redbush tea, Alpro unsweetened almond milk and almond yogurt. You can put alpro natural yogurt into a seive with kitchen roll and drain overnight which gives you a soft cheese which I add chives too. I did well on 5:2 but not been good lately and put some weight back on.

Hi WAYOFLIFE, this is probably the advice equivalent of coals-to-Newcastle, but nuts are highly recommended on BSD, but do check for the carb content. Macadamias are the lowest (tho high in calories) and cashews are among the highest in carbs so best avoided (except occasionally). You are probably more aware of phyto-proteins than us omnivores, just remember to keep the good fat (extra virgin olive oil, coconut etc) levels up for satiety!

All the best to you on your BSD journey.

    Thanks 3CS
    Great advice
I’ll check out the quorn. Didn’t know it’s vegan as thought there’s egg in it.

Not a fan of seitan but will eat nuts, seeds, tofu.

I also drink soya/almond milk and coconut yogurt. I sprinkle hemp seeds on to the coconut yog. They are high in protein too.

    – Have just re read what I have just written above. I sound so healthy. If only. I’d love to get the carbs/sugar out of my system.

    Best wishes to all.

    Hello everyone !
I completed about 3 months of the 5:2 about 16 months ago and went from 94kg to 86kg but didn’t touch a drop of my beloved alcohol in that time.
I then went to Bali for a 15 day break and you just can’t say no to a cold happy hour Bintang.
Slowly over 8 months the 8kg went back on and by Dec 31st 2016 I was back to my stupid Best of 93.1kg and feeling sluggish.
I had had Gout for the 4th time in 8 years so gave up meat in Nov 2016 as that is what causes it.
I give up meat and don’t get it for ages, then I slowly go back to it and Bang-Gout, it’s back.
My Auntie was diagnosed Type 2 at age 65 and we have a family chat group on What’s App. She showed a photo of herself and she had clearly lost 15-20kg and she totally recommended BSD diet and book.
I bought the book in early Dec and decided that Jan 1st was the day. My wife has agreed to join with me as well.
It’s our 3rd day today and it’s been tough.
My wife weighed 90.7kg and our ideal weights are 77kg and 70kg respectively.

I’ve nearly read the whole book and these forums are so inspiring. Why can’t doctors get inside with this BSD concept ??

My wife isn’t a great reader but I will help her read the book in full and enjoy the success stories on the forum.

It’s my birthday tomorrow (49) and I’ve since decided not to have a meal out etc and I decided yesterday that I will celebrate by having 800 calories.

We are going away to a friends house for one night on the beach so we have said there will be about 3 days where we have about 1600 calories and they’re built in. No carbs just protein and veg:salad:quinoa and fats on those days.

We also have a Concert at a winery in early Feb seeing Simple Minds with 5 couples so that will be a challenge but hopefully we will be so into the BSD that it’s only one of the 1600 calorie days that we had to factor in.

It’s morning on the 3rd day and yesterday was tougher than the first day. I played golf and cutnthe grass and felt faint in the afternoon, in fact I took a nap which was great lol.

Lots of carbonated water with lime in keeeps me going and the 2 egg omelette with mushrooms, tomatoes, onion, chilli and spinach is a belter of a breakfast.

Bean salad was nice as was roast veggies for dinner last night.

10,000 steps a day is crucial for me as I work in an office. Thankfully in Aus you can wear trainers with a suit so I have some great Adidas black shoes that feel like a trainer and just about go with a pin stripe suit lol. Just about.

My wife already seems to have more energy so I’ll check in in about a week with out first weigh in on Sunday mornings.

    Be strong and determined

You can’t have your Carb and eat it

Hi everyone! Well that is day one done and I didn’t half make it harder than it needed to be. So anxious that I won’t be able to do this that my ‘gremlins’ in my head have had a field day ! I missed breakfast , my choice but I don’t think I will miss it again. Hummus and salad for lunch and then gammon and cauliflower cheese for tea. All normal food , minus the 2 ton of junk that I would usually have as snacks. However in the course of a day I have almost joined Weight Watchers and Slimming World !! I guess it is just my gremlins’ way of telling me that I can’t succeed.
From tomorrow I plan to read all your stories on this forum as soon as the negative talk starts. I know I only need a few good days to get me on my way. Given up diet pop today too (.was drinking it almost every exclusively) Very bad headache today and not sure if it is the lack of pop or drastic carb reduction?
    Take care xx

  • TOPCAC – Well done for returning, not too much damage done. I’m sure most BSDers have had their moments.

I’m so hooked on this way of life that I don’t even consider carby foods, at least not refined carbs and I keep forgetting it’s ok to have complex carbs. I currently have some chickpeas soaking ready to be cooked tomorrow (batch cooked and frozen in single portions).

It took a few days but I’m finally back on track after Christmas. My weight has been different every day so it’s hard to say how much I gained, anywhere from 2lb to 4lb, all from eating way too much of the good stuff (and an alcoholic bevvy or two or three…hic). Today, I did loads of exercise including HIIT, Pilates (full body workout) and during my sitting times I put a timer on to 1hourly intervals and got up, stretched, moved around, jogged on my rebounder etc. Eating wise I’ve been positively saintly, and I also drank at least 2l water. Phew! It’s only the second day I’ve stayed on track since 27th, but something finally clicked in my head this morning!

Did anyone else see C4 Food Unwrapped Diet Special this eve? Mainly about high fat low carb and intermittent fasting! Oh, and the advantages of a good night’s sleep on weight management…. so I am off to bed!

Hi way of life. I am also vegan and proteins I use are natural smoked tofu, seitan, nuts, seeds. Quorn also do vegan fillets but I have not checked carbs on them yet. I get my tofu etc in Wholefoods health store but other health stores stock too. Protein powders can be low too and I add to shakes which I count as 1 meal and not as a snack. If you have any tips please let me no. Thanks

  • Just watching (recorded earlier) this program, and although there was no mention of BSD there were plenty of other examples of increased healthy fat intake leading to weight loss, including a Dr Unwin in Southport who has been prescribing his own version of LCHF to great effect for the last 4 years (not with calorie restriction). The examples of the food chosen to suit the diet were very familiar. Now they are looking into high fat Nordic diets and the lower rates of obesity and higher full fat dairy consumption of people in Holland. They have just dropped in on the director of Public health England to quiz her on the incorrect current dietary advice. The word is slowly getting out 😁

Thanks everyone. I have completed the first day back on. It was okay and not as hard as I thought (possibly because my body is still living off all I have consumed!). I’m back to work tomorrow so it will be easier to be away from the house and the leftover food! I have teenagers at home so I can’t get rid of the food that I’m trying to avoid as they consume carbs in vast amounts but of course they all burn it off equally as fast! I remember that metabolism! I no longer have it.
Building my resolve and looking forward to the clothes loosening again.
See you on the forums (I find them really helpful).

Try putting BSD or 8 week BSD into the search box along with the recipe name. I get lots from the book coming up that way, but not tried searching on MFP for recipes from the website. Personally I found the recipe book great for inspiration. If you struggle with MFP you could always try using the measurements for fat/protein only as things like cabbage and broccoli etcan are so low I don’t think it matters much if you don’t count them, but no doubt some more radical than I would disagree.

Have a look for the 101 things to do with cauliflower thread. I don’t think we are up to 101 yet, but whole roasted or spiced roasted cauliflower steaks, rice, mash (various recipes) and even pizza crusts are options that have been suggested from this humble vegetable. Many also work with broccoli. Get a spiraliser as well and the skies the limit for pasta replacements.

  • Hi Xmas slim, it’s good to hear from you. Thank you for rekindling this thread. I too plateaued for a few days but I am back on track now. I have been on target with daily food for almost two weeks choosing not to drink at new year. I am an all or nothing girl and thought it was safer to leave it alone! I was disappointed to put on a kilo yesterday according to the rotten scales! Today however it is back to previous readings. Week 2 , day 2 and 4 kilos down. This lifestyle really works! Wishing everyone well and stick with it!

  • Hi everyone and happy new year. I’ve just returned from the dark side or that’s what it feels like. Far too many carbs and calories and nowhere near the plan. But today my partner and I chucked out every last piece of temptation and we have all our meals planned for the rest of the week. I weighed in this morning. Total gain of 5lbs since xmas eve and it makes me ashamed to be honest. But I will fix it. Carb flu here I come!! ☹️️

  • Literally anything is acceptable except for the ‘white stuff’ if you break the diet down to it’s essentials. Potatoes, white bread, pasta and other white flour products, rice and sugar are essentially the only forbidden items. Many people if going for the 800 calories option also restrict starchy below ground vegetables and grains, and it is always wise to avoid processed food in the main and make dishes from scratch so you know exactly what is in them, but several of us have never used the book plan and just make it up as we go along with plenty of success. I am not vegan but have used both tofu and coyo while on 800 fast diet as I like a lot of variety in my proteins.

We have a motorhome and are talking about going down to Spain in the future. New grandchild due soon so I don’t want to miss everything special a child brings to the family.

    Hi DaisyMay
Counting carbs as well as calories isn’t necessary but many find the weight drops faster if they keep carbs under 60.
Sounds like you might have managed that though based on what you said you ate – unless the veg were starchy.
Apologies all for epic length of my previous post! Will make Mondays only my weigh-in/exercise logged posts. The rest will be outward looking!

    Hi All,

Jim here. I was 6’1″ and 94.6kg at age 45, when i started the BSD at the beginning of October. I stuck to the diet religiously for 6 weeks and got down to 85.5kg, but then lapsed in mid December and am up to 87kg. I can’t say i was ever hungry – my struggle is sugar: i was sure i’d broken the addiction but a couple of treats and all self control was gone.

So this thread will track my progress on this, my second attempt. I would like to get down to 77.5kg by the end of March. I’m sold on the benefits of this since i am already much healthier. Ten years of gastric reflux and more spent on Gaviscon than most smokers spend on cigarettes disappeared almost overnight.

    Jim.

    Hello

An overweight, unhealthy vegan here. Yes, I eat lettuce but also overindulge in high sugar foods.
As a result, my mirror and I are no longer acquainted 🙁 Can’t bear to look.

I’m a couple of stones overweight and have been advised by my GP that I am well on the way to non alcoholic fatty liver disease.

Hoping I can do something about it.

Have been reading your posts with much interest. Very inspiring.

Am currently trying to find low carb vegan proteins.

Will start my new way of life on Saturday.

    Best wishes to all.
