Thanks for all the great suggestions on this thread.
I took the advice of drinking more fluids and without changing the diet (even cheating a bit on the calories during a weekend in London, but still very low on fast carbs) I had dropped 2lbs (1 kg) this morning. So now I´m going into the 4th week with some good feelings 🙂

Hello! Welcome everyone starting today (or near by!) how’s the first day going? What are you eating today?
    I’m having:
Breakfast – small piece cheese, few nut & cup of tea
Lunch – eggs grilled over some chopped bacon, small amount chopped pepper, 1 chopped mushroom, chilli & paprika
Dinner – lamb burgers with morroccan spiced cauli rice
Snacks – (only if needed! As these will take me over my 800 limit but on first few days I think it’s best to not be hungry) big spoon of sugar free peanut butter or few more nuts, more tea!
Don’t forget to count the carbs in the milk if you have tea! Can really add up and catch you out x

  • Hi Folks – mind if I join in on this challenge? I am on a final push to target weight and this four week challenge might be just the thing to help to get me there. Coasted a bit last week and so had a slight bounce back at this morning’s weigh-in. I now have 4.8lb to shift and if I achieve that, I’d like to go for two more.

Hi everyone, here we go then! I’ve been preparing for the last few days (started Friday) by reducing calories and carbs as much as I could… yesterday felt a bit groggy at first but fine after that.

Today… well I am amazed. I have had some celeriac/celery/roasted pepper soup for breakfast. I am not actually hungry now… and it’s almost lunchtime! I do feel hungry at night and I had to remind myself over and over again yesterday that it’s my future, my ability to actively enjoy life, that I’m doing it for.

I know relapse is never far away for me, so I have to keep reminding myself it’s (hopefully) a cure for my recent decline into poor health, not a diet.

It’s half term this week (I work in education) so I can really focus and prepare for the weeks when I’m back at work.

    How’s everyone’s first day going?

  • My goal is to get to below 12 and a half stone, hoped I would have got there before now ,it has been slow going.Hopefully I’ll be more focussed and stick better to the BSD.Think the last 4 weeks has been me understanding it all and trying to implement. There are a few things different to the book which doesn’t mention carbs, just calories. Also,is it right the number of calories you use up should be more than you take in?I’ll attempt to do that 6 days a week. That’s a good idea Verano to do weekly averages,as I had a rubbish weekend.

  • Hi all. I’m new here but seeing all the posts re ginger chocolate thought you might like to know Aldi do Moser Roth ginger chocolate in 100g bars. I’ve not had it as I don’t like ginger and don’t know what the chocolate % is but I often get the 85% chocolate and the ginger one is slightly less carbs. As an extra benefit Moser Roth do not use the dutching process with their coco beans (no alkalising) so better for you than Lindt and much cheaper. Just a thought if you’re near an Aldi.

No I didn’t watch it either SunnyB, but I totally agree with what you say about not returning to ‘normal’ eating.

I am afraid I have put on a lb after reaching my target weight last week, but I have not been weighing or measuring either. I blame the Co-op irresistible caramel nuts – note to self DO NOT BUY ANY MORE! However walking the new pooch and doing the housework over the weekend has meant an increase in steps – 16K steps on Sunday, so that must be good. I think I will wait a couple of days before weighing again, and hope for good news.

Must admit I didn’t see the programme, but have already come to the decision that we can’t return to eating as we did before and expect to maintain our loss. It was eating as we had been, which got us into the mess in the first place, so why would returning to it again result in anything different. Einstein is credited with saying, “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results”. Personally think this applies to the way we eat. If we go back to scoffing carbs, we will regain the weight.

That’s the problem with ‘diets’, they are seen as temporary, as a way of losing weight and there is the sort of woolly view that surely we must be able to eat ‘normally’ after it’s finished, but I think most of us here, know that this is not the truth. To maintain the loss, we have to eat a modified version of the BSD and keep an eye on things, so we can check any gain and deal with it.

This week I’m disappointed to report a small bounce back, with an increase of 0.8lb on the weekly weigh-in. However, I can’t pretend to be surprised as I was coasting last week, without weighing and measuring what I was consuming and there was a meal out too – including a dessert – with some (only a little) alcohol – a small dry sherry, half a glass of sparkling wine and a small dessert wine (that was the bad one!). So I have to accept and own this blip and knuckle under from today, to aim for a better result next week. Need to make sure to push up my hydration this week too, as that has slipped as well.

Still aiming to lose another 4lb by 11th April.

  • I did and thought it was poor.

The section on the American chap who’d won some banal TV programme and had put weight on “because” his metabolic rate had dropped to the point of him requiring only 1600 cals a day and then, after he’d put some weight back on and they did some real tests, it had amazingly returned to 2400, was just nonsense; as was his promotion of some food supposed to boost metabolic rate (?).

The lady from Lancashire who even said she’d gone back to eating what she’d done before her weight loss and had then put the weight back on, was beyond satire.

One of my goals for the next challenge: stop watching crap telly. I really need to get out more…. 😉

Did anyone see the Channel4 programme last week about assorted slimmers of the year and whether they had kept the weight off?
It featured several people who had experienced substantial weight gain after their substantial losses. The experts basically said that weight gain is inevitable because the body wants to claw back the fat it has lost. The people they featured who had successfully kept the weight off basically had kept up the momentum (one had even retrained as a personal trainer).

The moral of the tale seemed to be you’ve got to keep up your efforts, slack off too much and you undo the good work. For me, it also reinforced the importance of losing weight by eating proper food (I’ve felt for a while that shakes & pre-prepared meals don’t allow you to retrain your own ability to prep your own food). While I might struggle losing those last few pounds, I think the BSD is more likely to allow us to keep the weight off – but it is down to us to make sure we keep at it.

    Hi cmawp,
Tough news about the 1.5lb increase – but, as you say, if you are at your 3rd lowest weight, that’s what’s worth holding on to. Even when I was in the full swing of BSD last year I’d get fairly regular upwards lurches but I looked at the bigger picture which showed a downward trend. I just keep reminding myself that I still weigh more than 2st less than I did in Jan 2016, and I consider that the achievement, it just makes the odd gain of 1-2lb seem like small beer.

As for me, I am pleased to report that last week provided some consistent downward weigh-ins and today, praise the Lord, I broke through the 10st 2lb barrier for the first time since mid-December, 10st 1lb 4oz to be exact. Yes, it’ll probably bounce up a bit so I won’t get too delirious!

Anyway, I’m sure you’ll rid yourself of the extra, so keep persevering.

Verano, I’m so sorry, I’ve only just checked in to this thread and saw your reference to smoked trout, checked to my 16 Feb posting and saw your reply asking for more info

I’ve 2 fairly standard ways of doing this “risotto”, based on pre BSD. Now, I do real twice for OH and cauli for me. I simmer whichever vegs (few mins only so still crunchy) separately to the rice etc, add them later. I use the veg water to give flavour to the rice then, method 1: when adding vegs add similar to a Thai dipping sauce eg lime juice, sweet thai chili sauce, fish sauce, it usually needs some sugar so I add the barest minimum. As I have this maybe fortnightly I just live with it. Method 2 = cheats method. A local producer, Ogilvie & Co, have a scrumptious coriander, coconut, mango, sauce, beaut spices. It’s very thick in the jar, so when I succumb, I thin it with the veg water to a point where is still enjoyable but not lethal for cals/carbs.
Its not really risotto, but that’s what I tell OH he’s having 👼
Sorry this is not precise but it’s sorry of a moving feast with whatever i have handy.
I hope next time you fancy smoked trout this might inspire you.

Hello everyone it’s the start of the 8th week for me since restarting in January.
I weighed yesterday & last week lost 2lbs so that is 10 1/2 lbs lost in total but best of all is my BMI is now 29!😇
Yesterday was a bit mad eating with my two sons & granddaughter here for lunch. I made a Thai fish curry with coconut milk & had a few rice noodles & veg. However also ate duck nibbles & had some wine & chocolate icecream!!! But mad day over & I am determined having reached the milestone for me of 29 never to go up past that again, apart from yesterdays temp blip, & it’s BSD all the way now.
Thank you KrysiaD for your helpful advice & my husband has cut back on dried fruit & we have not bought anymore oranges & bananas. He has also been joining in exercising with me & his bloods have gone back down👍
I’m so sorry to read you are not well Nickix & hope you will soon feel much better.
Miss Ziggy I’m with you on going off track with family get togethers & eating out but it’s lovely knowing the BSD is a sort of safety net that we can all retreat back to. I have still a way to go to get to my goal weight so still need you all to please keep posting to keep me focused👏👏👏👏
I have a meal out on Wednesday & have to provide cake today for my beading group! I will continue to focus on eight week blocks of BSD until I get to my goal weight & there is one more week to go for me this next week & I am disappointed that I won’t will have lost another stone by the end of this “8 weeks” .
    Please keep posting everyone😀

Wow Ebs – really well done! Fantastic that your health has improved so much and you’ve found solutions to ongoing problems. Reading this and all the other posts – struggles and all – is so inspiring.

Well I’m on Week 7 Day 1 and have just weighed in at a loss of 1 stone!! I’m so delighted and it will take me the rest of the day to actually get this new weight in my head and all that it means in relation to my next target, keeping motivated etc. I have had flu so hope I’m not going to see an increase, but only weigh once a week now which has helped enormously as I’m focussing on other changes I see and feel, rather than numbers (which I’ve never liked anyway! ) I am now well into my healthy weight range – haven’t been this weight for 10 years – and panicking slightly about how to stay here, as I still have sugar cravings. These next 2 weeks I think I’ll try and focus hard on making meals from the BSD Recipe book that all the family can eat and that I enjoy, to try and build them into our eating habits before I start trying to maintain.

The future does worry me as any time I’ve lost weight in the past it’s gone back on in no time. Is there anyone out there who has done the 8 weeks and has found a good way of maintaining long term? I could carry on with the current WOE but I suspect it’s designed to be 8 weeks for a reason?

Anyway – it’s Monday – fresh start for us all, well done January starters, let’s keep up the amazing work : )

I’m up 1.5lb this week off the back of last week’s lowest ever weekly weigh in. It’s my 3rd lowest weight on BSD so although a gain is disappointing, I won’t hold on to that.

I’ve had a few distractions this week and yesterday I paid a heavy price for eating some bread coated ‘shaped chicken’ bites. I felt like I had been punched in the stomach all day and at one point I was braced over the toilet to bring it back up! Never again, it wasn’t fun and certainly wasn’t worth eating.

I seem to be able to eat sugary foods with a small bad effect but any bread/flour/rice based foods make me feel ill now.

Hope everyone is well, looking forward to hearing your updates.

  • I’m starting to feel like a giant at 5’3″!!! Actually, I’ve not had my height taken for a while and so with ‘age’ I could be a little shorter now!!

The clothes problem again. I have trousers that are now too long but because they are stretchy they still fit. Do I shorten them and then maybe have to do it again in a few months or just send them to the charity shop now? I remember Krysia saying that people really noticed her weight loss when she started to shed her ‘clown’ clothes. Even though I still have quite a lot lose many of my clothes are now ‘voluminous’ and really not flattering, but I’m just not sure I’m ready for the ‘have you lost weight’ comments. I’m rather shy when it comes to my appearance and don’t like the spotlight.

  • Looking forward to this challenge as I’ve not done one for a while.

My goal is a modest 4lb loss so no pressure there. Six pounds would be better but we’ll wait and see. I have decided to be a bit lenient with myself during this challenge so I’m not doing the 800/30. I plan on increasing my carbs to 40g if I can, but lower than 50g, and my calories to 900. I just need more fruit and vegetables. I find weekends really hard so for a week or so I’m going to work on weekly averages rather than daily ones and see how that pans out. We should all cut ourselves a little slack now and again!

Hope this challenge is a happy journey for us all.

Thanks Mixnmatch and Captainlynne for you quick replies. I will work in cycles of 8 weeks but just keep going since it seems safe to do so. Maintenance I’ll worry about when I get to target if the dreaded plateau doesn’t hit before (That’s what happened last time I tried to lose a lot of weight).

Over the weekend I have managed to stick to 800cals and walked 20k steps with a net loss of exactly 4lb. That’s a massive 9.8lb in 9 days. That’s with a daily average of approx. 900cals and a lot less exercise than I had intended as an old knee injury has flared up. I am happy to say I have now lost 5% of my body weight and am back to being simple overweight rather than obese.

What I find most intriguing is that of than 9.8lb, 9.1lb is body fat and only 0.7lb lean tissue & water. So this is a real weight loss rather than the large water loss most people get when reducing carbs. As I haven’t eaten grains or starchy carbs for years (except for the odd potato hack) it seems my body is fine tuned to burning fat and not retaining water if I give it a chance by not feeding it high levels of external ‘food fat’.

Going forward, I have decided to use Monday as my weekly weigh day just because it fits my old training diary that I used before to lose weight and have now resurrected. So today 20th Feb 2017 is the official start day of my first 8wk cycle having done 9 days of transition (I’m hoping to only need to do 3 cycles in all to reach my longed for initial goal weight (the weight I was when I got married 30yrs ago) which I have never achieved. After that who knows.

  • Our next 4 week challenge for those who are comfortable with the shorter timeframe. We are winding up on our “interactive ….. ending 21st February” challenge with our final weigh-in posts tomorrow (Tuesday 21st) then starting over here with renewed vigour – aren’t we? Of course we are 🙂 All welcome to this party.

Hi All Ebs here tomorrow is the last day of our 8 week diet, between hubby and I we have lost 14 kilos in the 8 weeks which is amazing. Chris has gone from a size 36 to a 33 trousers. He hasn’t been this size since a teenager and he has just had his 72nd birthday. I have really enjoyed the food, the recipes are great, I plan the menu for the week and buy all the ingredients in one go. All our meals are from the BSD book and the BSD recipe book. I dont like pasta or rice, bread cakes etc give me cronic indigestion, I am not celiac and have tried gluten free but still indigestion. Since being on this diet no problems which is fantastic the reflux everyday has been awful for years, no longer need to take anything to control it. There are so many plus’ I feel healthy, fit and I can fit into a size 10 from a 14, I am only 5ft 3″ and a small body frame. We intend sticking to the diet but increasing the portion size, as we love the food so much. I have recommended the diet to heaps of my friends, one of which has bought the book but is just about to go through chemo so she isn’t in the right head space at the moment, but being 30 kilos over weight will give it a go later. The other friend is just about to start 20 kilos over weight and also Type 2 diabetic. Well good luck to everyone, keep supporting each other, this forum has been great and a wonderful support for me.

I started on the 15th Feb so am on Day 5. The last couple of days have been tough but today I feel much better. Just focus on the first week and getting through that and for me, planning is the key so you never have to think on the spot about what to eat. If you’ve already planned your meals and bought the ingredients all you have to do is make it, then eat it!

Try and get hold of Jimmy Moore’s ‘Cholesterol Clarity’ which is very eye opening when it comes to what your cholesterol numbers mean. High ‘good’ cholesterol is not bad and even high LDL is not necessarily bad. Your doctor should be concentrating on your triglycerides and HDL and the ratio between the two.

  • Gday all,

Week 25 done and dusted. Increased my walking this week, feeling little ginger in the legs, did a personal best yesterday 30,180 steps , 19.8km. Pretty happy with that considering back in August last year when l started, i was doing around 6.500 steps per day. Apple cider vinegar, ginger, cinnamon, lemon, cayenne pepper and raw honey tonic is getting easier to drink as the days go by.
    Weigh in results:
    Weight 117.2kg
    Waist 123cm
2.4 kg loss for the week,

    42.7kg loss to date

18.2 kg to go till l reach my goal of 99kg, doesn’t seem as daunting.
Have a good one all, keep on plugging away…….

    Hi.
It’s great to read everyone’s progress. It’s challenging changing a lifetime of thinking on food. I fell off the wagon last week. Had a rotten tummy bug, which the kids then came down with and this all coincided with hubby being away for 3 days. So needless to say diets were the last thing on my mind. But i’m sitting comfortably at 74 kg, down from 81.8kg, which still has me overweight according to bmi. apparently i need to get down to 72, but i’m ok where i am. have a fitting for a new work uniform on wednesday, so if that’s not motivation to maintain my weight, i don’t know what is!!
I have been using the fitness pal to track my food but have stopped as i was starting to focus on the calories of everything a bit too much. I could see how easy it would be to really whittle down my eating to not very much. i understand a lot of folk with anorexia use myfitnesspal and i can see why. So i have pulled back on that for the time being.
I have noticed my thighs are a lot less dimply, even my 10 yr old son has commented. I am tempted to try on some clothes from the back of the wardrobe but don’t want to be disappointed if they don’t fit yet. I cleaned out the closet of a lot of things i thought i’d never fit again but now wishing i had kept them.
Not quite sure about where to from here. I’ve found the 800 so manageable, i’m almost tempted to keep going, but feel for my head space i need to move on from here. Interested in 16:8, which is quite do able when the shifts are manic (public maternity hospital, when arent they manic!!) or 5:2. Have to muse on that. As i’m not a huge meat eater, and cant do dairy, i need to play with my options a bit to find out my right level. Anyhow, off to sort out the washing. Good luck everyone. it’s been fun travelling with you all!!

Hi everyone, I’m going to start tomorrow. I did a shakes diet last year which is similar in carbs/calories and I suppose just like the Newcastle diet itself. This worked very well for my diabetes and gave me great FBS. However, I have been quite naughty of late and back to my old carb-loaded eating habits. I’m looking forward to doing this as it’s real food therefore more manageable socially etc.

End of Week 5 update from me, only 200g loss this week, which is a bit disappointing. I think the steroids I have to take every day may be affecting weight loss as I kept to 800 cals most days last week, except for 1 where I had a 1000. Am re-reading the book this week and trying to re-focus. I’ve lost 3.7kg in 5 weeks, but was really hoping to lose 8kg in the 8 weeks, which means I have 3 weeks to lose 4.3kg. I am certainly going to try!

So good to see so many people on here. I feel really daunted – it sounds pathetic but it’s scary to eat so little if you’ve never done a diet like this before (I was eating loads on Slimming World!). Thanks to everyone for all the advice. I’m new to MyFitnessPal and I’m finding the quantity for each item is an issue as it doesn’t let me add exactly how much of a particularly item I’ve had…. so if i have 130g of salmon tomorrow night how do I enter this? Sorry if I’m being thick! Thanks in advance.

    Hi All
I am planning to start the 8week 800 on 20th Feb too. Any suggestions for doing it the vegetarian way (I do eat fish) would be welcome. I am hoping to lose around a stone in time to celebrate my 60th birthday in May. I am currently 12stone 12 BMI 26 – not too bad as I am 5’9″ but really need to lose round the hips and thighs. I suffer from fibromyalgia and arthritis, so am curious to see if the diet causes any changes. Good idea to measure before hand as I found this kept me going on previous diets where the weight loss wasn’t always happening.

I have planned a week’s worth of recipes and made my shopping list! I think the only way I can do this is to be super organised for a change!

    Good luck to everyone!

Verano, great idea… you’ve reminded me I have some Lindt chocolate in, and will use a square of that tonight if I get too twitchy. I have some spare calories as I’m going with poached salmon with sprouts and broccoli for dinner.

Day three… today went fairly well, but I woke up feeling a bit fuzzy and sluggish – it took me ages to get going. That wore off after breakfast, vegetable soup – a bit unusual but it’s what I felt would keep me with the programme. I think it was probably a bit of sugar withdrawal, although my BG reading wasn’t especially low. Felt fine the rest of the day with egg mayonnaise and cress and celery sticks for lunch.

Hellyshear you are more prepared than I am – though I have planned Mondays menu, just the weighing and inputting to MFP to sort out later on. I’m hoping that I can plan one day in advance at a time and will continue to look out for everyone’s hints and tips. I have tried BSD before and it was great but then life got in the way and it all went to pot. I know if I can be more organised it’ll be much easier to follow and stick to. I have even found the tape measure and will scare myself with that tonight as I have seen so many great posts to use shrinking measurements to keep you going when the scales stop moving 🙂

Aww bess you Nickix so sorry to hear you have not been well. Going to work when you feel ill is the pits. have a virtual (((((hug))))) from me for a good recovery.

Thank you everyone for your kind comments. It really does gives me a boost by being on here and I am so pleased with myself:-)

This way of eating is so hard but I am convinced its the only way to lose weight. I am so grateful I am not a diabetic but I really am convinced if I had not taken myself in hand I was getting nearer to being really ill. I am lucky to be feeling really well and I take my hat off to all those who are diabetic and are or have managed to come off medication.

It surprises me that I could still go back to my old way of eating quite easily especially bread……but I find I sometimes eat more nuts than I should so perhaps its that which is holding me back from the big weight losses! It also surprises me that some days are a real struggle to get through with the help of a square of cheese or a couple or 12 nuts or a good spoonful of yoghurt.

Anyway…..hand holding for encouragement to those who need it, and get well soon vibes to those who are not as well as they could be.

Hi Lottie and Cosmic, welcome aboard the good ship 20 Feb starters! I’ve managed a third day of control, amazingly. It’s not over yet but I swerved the takeaways that were calling. Good luck for tomorrow, all.

    Hi everyone😀
    Hi Fairy face…..
Isn’t it a great feeling when you have to buy smaller clothes👍🏻👍🏻.
Although the I am generally doing well, this weekend I have been totally off BSD and I feel very heavy, bloated and uncomfortable. I’ve had a busy weekend with a meal out Friday, a big Sunday lunch out today and a family gathering yesterday. I’ve consumed more alcohol that I should have done too😭😭😭. I am looking forward to getting back to BSD next week. I am off to make some soup now so I can have some when I get home from work tomorrow. And will buy some steak for dinner tomorrow night. No alcohol for me for a while as I feel I must get back on track. I feel as though I must treat BSD once again as I did back in October! I am so determined not to get fat again😱
Where is everyone I am missing you all. I hope we all continue to use this forum – I find it so encouraging 🙂🙂

Xantham gum. All you need is a tsp of it which is 12 calories and zero net carbs because it’s all fiber. It thickens like a charm. Agar agar — a kind of gelatin derived from seaweed — works well too, and it has basically no calories and carbs. My preferred thickener nowadays is a combination of plant gums that I get from an online low carb shop. I use a half teaspoon to thicken dressings and sauces. It is odorless, flavorless and you get immediate results as soon as it’s thoroughly whisked in to the liquid.

Hi Everyone, I’ll start tomorrow as well. I did four weeks of the BSD just before Xmas and lost 3kg and then had a ‘break’ for the festivities and put back on 2kg. I have so far, not managed to really stick at it again, I just need to get through those initial first few days and get used to eating 800 calories a day again. I have got just under a stone to lose and have done for some years now. I really just want to get on with it now because it’s a constant sore point in my life and gets me down….you’d think that would be enough to motivate me, wouldn’t you? I go to the gym quite happily and walk and do cardio at least 3 times a week, so I just need to get my erratic eating habits under control. Saying that, once in the swing of the BSD, I do quite enjoy it…

I’m hoping that the mutual support on here will keep me on the straight and narrow as well as My Fitness Pal and my Fitbit. I’ve also uploaded progress pictures onto My Fitness Pal which I find quite horrific right now, so they should spur me on. I am going to go with Keid’s dates and so by 22 April, I want to have lost these 6.5 kg and be done with this gaining and losing the same couple of kilos over and over again routine…..

Good luck everyone, let’s do it!!!!
