  • It does get easier, like everyone has said. After over 38 weeks on the BSD I can’t imagine eating the carbs again. Dare I say it – sometimes I have to buy bread or cakes (for work) – and it doesn’t bother me now!

Years ago my father had to lose weight and could be heard, when passing a well-known shop selling bakery products, saying ‘poison’. In my early BSD days, that thought was running through my mind.

You can do this! Look forward to seeing your progress.

    Hey Hillybob,

Really pleased you’ve got off to such a good start! Sparkling water and lime definintely works as a replacement – especially in a wine glass!

    Keep going everyone!

Hi it’s day 3 for me. Felt really off colour last night and this morning. I think it must be the “carb flu” mentioned earlier. Went for walk and drank more water. Feel amazing now (afternoon) Enjoying the recipes in the 8 week blood sugar book. Good luck everyone

  • 62 carbs
    972 calories: had cake!!!
    (Yesterday’s numbers)
    Today’s weight: 164lbs
    +2 lbs!!

30 min walk yesterday and HIIT workout the day before.

Not being strict, but am logging everything and lots of stairs here and exercising everyday. Did pretty well at breakfast and lunch and had a treat for snack and a dessert last night so not surprised.

Snoop it’s tough when things get really busy! Do the best you can. All your faithfulness has brought you a long way. You’ll soon be back to normal and it will be easier.

Hi topcap and Yowzer 49 and Flash21

Had a brilliant first two days – must say I can understand that difficult time – for me it is between 5 pm and 7 pm when my husband gets home from work – the first thing we would do is have a large glass of wine and some sort of snack/crisps things. So now I fill a very large wine glass with freshly squeezed lime juice and fill it right up with chilled sparkling water – that does me for the “witching hour”!! Kept to the diet for Tuesday until after dinner where I succumbed to a small spoonful of plain full fat yogurt and some home made blackberry and apple (no sugar though!). I think this will be a regular thing for me to stop me reaching for the chocolate!!

Lovin’ the sound of all that body brushing! I used to do it years ago – you have inspired me to start again!!

Good luck everyone with completing the week.

Heresy alert. I plateaued for 10 days, despite sticking fairly closely to the diet plan (about 900-1000 calories but under 50 carbs). Some issues with what might be nicely called digestive transit, but generally feeling OK. I spoke to a friend who is a nutritionist and fairly positive about BSD and they suggested a more traditional meal of say porridge as a one-off. Their theory was that it might reboot the metabolism.

I tried this with a good portion of jumbo oats (half whole milk half water, but no sugar or fruit, just a pinch of salt – like my grandma always made but omitting the whisky) so not a catastrophe in BSD terms and it seems to work since then I’ve steadily lost a pound or so every couple of days.

As a single instance I’m not claiming causation, but I think may be an interesting data point.

Sorry to resurrect an aging topic but I have (had?) sleep apnoea. Since starting this diet I have not had an episode of apnoea at all, and am sleeping so much more soundly, as is Mme Maigret.

Seeing the learned medics next week, I may seek their advice.

Age 52, started BSD in early August at 23st 7lb (at 6’2″) and on the pre-diabetic/diabetic border.

In a rash moment in the local rugby club I volunteered to take part in the annual SuperVets (over 50) vs Vets (over 40) match next April. I haven’t played for fifteen years or so and at 23.5 stone, it wouldn’t be possible.

The BSD period has included a two week trip to Canada where the odd beer, burger and poutine did slip through the net, so current average is just over 1000 calories a day, but trending downwards.

Despite these lapses, currently at 21st 3, so my next goal is to get to 21st by my first session with the diabetic clinic nurse on 5 October, which will mean I’m over 10 percent lighter and then 20st for Christmas when we will start “training”.

Well done SunshineGirlsnd come in Jan. We can do this. Let’s get that bus on rolling again.

By the way I had a dream that I met one of you in theatres in Brighton(not sure which one of you it was but in my dream I knew it was someone from this forum ) and we went for a coffee. Exciting dreams I have, eh?

On a more serious note, I took my 13 year old to docs this am as he has had tummy ache for 3 days and he said he had pain in his gall bladder and to put him in a low fat diet for a week and see what happens. I wouldn’t say we are a high fat family but now I am going to need to do some serious planning!

Sunshine-girl, that’s very true! I hadn’t even thought about it in that way. I have a whole host of dingy baggy things that I would love to ditch. I think currently they might be my comfort/hiding myself items but if I can lose some weight/inches they may well be discarded!

  • I love you guys! These comments are exactly what I need to hear today, so a big THANK YOU from me. You’re right, I definintely need to stay away from those parts of the shop. In fact, I may have to avoid that shop altogether (it’s the corner shop on the way to work) and make sure I only do a big supermarket shop where I can stock up with all the things I need.

Baristagirls, you sound exactly like me! I’m going to turn that saying into a mantra….

SunnyB – 17 weeks is wonderful! I hope I can go the distance like that πŸ™‚ I think some mini goals may well help to keep me on the straight and narrow.

Topcac – that smell! It’s heavenly. But I know bread and its carby friends are the very devil so short of wearing blinkers to the supermarket I think I will absolutely be steering clear of the danger aisles. Thanks for the reminder of the reasons for doing this – they are pretty similar to mine.

Thanks again everyone – I can do this!

Flash21, who said they have to be sensible. One I have yet to reach is when I am 11 st 7lbs I will throw out 3 pairs of dingy baggy knickers. Whatever makes you realise you are achieving something.

  • Steer well clear of the bread aisle. That will help. what doesn’t help is that the supermarkets pipe the smell of freshly baked bread all over the store…sorry…getting carried away.

I’m on day 10 so remember very well how I felt a week ago. I thought that I would never be able to go without the carb laden sugar laden crap that I had been eating. But then I thought about all the reasons why I started this – the sleepless nights, the bloated feeling after every meal the weight gain that I couldn’t seem to lose, the addiction to carbs that made me go out at lunchtime, buy sweets, chocolate and crisps and hide them in my desk to munch away at in secret all afternoon.

No way was I going back to that. the cravings will diminish and you will feel like a new woman – I’m not quite there but I dropped 7lbs in my first week and today is the first day that I slept through the night in living memory so I feel SO much better!
Hang in there, keep coming back to the boards for support and remember your reasons!
    Good luck xxx

  • Hey Flash21 – it gets easier I promise. I have been on the BSD for 17wks (with a gap of ten weeks between the first seven and the other ten as we were away, so I wasn’t actually counting anything during that time, just trying to maintain) and now I really don’t have any attraction to the heavy carb stuff. That’s not to say that I don’t occasionally have a glass of wine or a square or two dark chocolate, or maybe a scoop of ice cream.

You are still in the phase where your body is crying out for the carbs you are depriving it off and it’s trying it’s best to trick you into caving and feeding the craving. If you are used to eating lots of carbs, this is not an uncommon thing and if you just take a day at a time Flash21, it will get easier. It helps if you are not hungry, so drink plenty and make sure you have enough fat too, as this helps you to feel full and stay feeling full for longer. Is it possible for you to avoid the bread/cake and confectionery isles until you are feeling stronger? Not having the temptation right under your nose helps.

Another idea might be to set yourself a mini goal – perhaps it could be a small non-food reward, if you can avoid eating any of those bad carbs for a whole week? And if you can do a whole week, you will soon find it much easier to resist and avoiding the carbs will become second nature.

    Good luck!

  • It’s early days yet and don’t walk down the aisle if you can help it….. I kept going with one of Rosemary Conley’s sayings “nothing tastes as good as feeling slim feels” and whilst you disagree with it when binging (yes, my bad) you find it’s perfectly true as you shed the pounds. Plus I felt so unwell at the weight I was that I KNEW I had to do something about it! And it was now or never!

Wannabe that’s yoghurt with no flavours/fruit/crumble/honey added to it. Just yoghurt. Then you add your own flavour or not as you prefer. You might have to hunt around for the unflavoured stuff but will soon get your eye in. Lots feel the Greek yoghurt is more filling ( full fat not 0% fat ) and if you are in UK Fage ( however the biggest word on the packaging is TOTAL!) is the best again according to others posters. I live alone and can’t often get small pots of Fage so get full fat Yeo ( green packaging ). You could always make your own πŸ™‚

Thanks Frog, just need to wait now until 5th October.

after yesterdays ravenous episode I went to get my haircut and was feeling fine, then got home and soon after I was exhausted. I googled and turns out a lot of people get tired after that test. I was really struggling and ended up going to bed and was asleep over an hour. Then up again, chicken and salad for dinner, early bed. I feel like I lost half a day lol.

Thankfully today I feel more normal. I’ve been chilling but I really should get to breakfast as I’m starting to feel hungry. I might make a shake, then soup for lunch. Going to make fajita’s tonight with the leftover chicken for hubby I’ll have the chicken with salad again.

  • Good morning! Nice to see the sunshine’s back today πŸ™‚

A question: how do you stay committed to this plan? I am only a measly 3 days in and already feeling shifty-eyed in the shop as I try to ignore the bad stuff but stray close to the bread aisle looking longingly at crusty rolls and the like. It feels like my whole body is screaming at me to eat ALL THE CARBS and my mind is working overtime to calm down the thoughts! I really, really don’t want to be a quitter, so how do you all stay strong?

  • Hello Boligreen! Yes, you’re right. They do have to go as they’re just glaring temptation otherwise. Hear that thud? That’s them dropping into the bin!! I’m very luck as my OH does not have a sweet tooth so I only have myself to blame for bringing any sweet stuff into the house…In answer to your question, I am not having any coffee. But that’s mainly because I don’t like it! Sorry to not be of more help on that front.

Thanks Kookaburra I think I did go into my appointment with an open mind, I prefer to take the conservative option but I was ready to have a hysterectomy if that was what was suggested. My gyno/surgeon seemed to be suggesting fibroid removal as first option, then a Mirena device put in if needed as I do also have adenomyosis and only if those don’t work to have hysterectomy. It is so hard to judge beforehand what is needed. Too late now, anyway, I don’t want to go back to the start of the waiting list!

I’ve been maintaining my weight, at least I’m not gaining! Proud and jealous of all those sticking to the plan. I’ll get there, still in time for summer! (Spring here in Australia.)

I had one of those moments this morning after cooking bacon for breakfast. Was I ‘bad’ for all the fat and salt (most dieters would think so) or ‘good’ because no carbs? Is everything ok in moderation, or should I abstain completely – and if so from what? I guess this is why having a set diet can make things easier, you don’t have to stress about every meal if you follow the rules. But I’ve been on so many diets with so many different rules it can get confusing.

I said to my brother-in-law once that I was trying to think of one single food that had not been vilified by one diet or another, fat or sugar or processed food, butter vs margarine, meat, dairy, carbs, soy, salt, starchy vegetables, fruit… I came up with one category – dark green leafy vegetables. Everyone recommends them! The only safe food! Nope, he said. If you’re body building and want high density food you have to avoid anything bulky but low calorie because it fills you up without delivering much energy. Damn it! (I don’t know if he was right, by the way, never done body building, but it makes a good anecdote!)

  • Woops posted in the wrong area lol !! under day 3 . Keep at it everybody, flash 21 those choc mint biscuits have to go in the bin it’s not worth it I had to throw all temptation out & my partner hides any treats out in the shed ( poor fella)!!

Is that all you ate, that’s good in comparison to me, I have been doing that most days this week, I have also lost the plot. Weighed in this am up .3 kg on last week. So back in serious mode, my excuse is I have been so bonkers busy I have been getting over tired, and I think that has weakened my resolve. I don’t think I have looked at the posts here for days, that also doesn’t help. My workload is still very high, hit the ground running on return from hol, but it is more manageable now.
We is in week 12 mode hehe, anyway I don’t want week 13 to be an even more disappointing one so on it now, you to us June 29 girls got to stick together.

It’s so good to see there are other ladies with PCOS on this diet. I am on week 3 now and I generally feel really good. I still get pretty hungry sometimes but knowing I am eating better than I ever have before keeps me on track. I am a bit disappointed with my weight loss, 8.5lbs so far, I was hoping for something more dramatic but I intend to stay the course. My skin has cleared up and I am sleeping better than I have for a long time although that wasn’t the case for the first couple of weeks. I don’t do the exercises in the book, I run every couple of days instead and I am hoping this will gete asier as I lose the weight. Wish me luck!

Week 12 results; 1lb loss. Grrr. This meant , as I have already posted, that I got to my 1 1/2 stone loss goal. I did actually see my other goal fulfilled yesterday with my weight starting with a 12, but then yesterday afternoon I completely lost the plot. I had a real craving for chocolate which just didn’t go. I gave into it with a double decker and then it was like the floodgates had opened and I ate a bowl of cereal, a peanut butter sandwich, a piece of cake and chips with my caesar salad! Needless to say I have put on a pound this morning so now my weight starts with a 13 again.

So my goals for the next week are
To see my weight start with a 12 (again)
3 lbs loss: I will no longer be obese just overweight according to my BMI

Frog, don’t worry about that kilo. It will soon disappear. You know what you have to do. Enjoy your break, Verano.

As Kookaburra says try sticking to the ‘M’ plan if you can, difficult with raging hormones, but try to keep low carb if nothing else. Keep us informed of your progress, before and after. xx

Today I was down another pound and am feeling a real difference in my body. The ‘visceral’ fat I presume is going ‘cos everywhere is feeling better and the fluid retention is definitely vastly improved!!

Ozzie you did brilliantly. What a challenge. Well done also on your weight loss so far.

I have been on the BSD since 1st May and now can say no to any food offered. But I did have a serious wobble on Sunday. It was at 5 year-old grandson’s birthday party. Had bought my BSD food with me as I knew there was no food that I could eat. Was in charge of the kitchen with OH and surrounded by cupcakes, homemade birthday cake and nibbles which were surprising easy to resist. But it was when the smell of the pizzas cooking started wafting around the kitchen that I had a serious wobble. Luckily I when they came out of the oven they didn’t look that appetising and were quite easy to resist.
