End of week 9 and lost another 2.5 lbs. Total 9 lbs but that includes a gain of 2 lbs when I had family visiting a 3 meals out in a week. So back on track. When I look at some of the losses I think mine is not worth a mention but it is my 9 lbs, more important for me is the fact that my HBA1c went from 8.2 to 6.7 and my morning bloods are regularly around 90 to 110. Happy days.

Hi Switzerland, I started on the 5:2 (using 600 calorie fast days and controlled but unrestricted non fast days) but switched this May to 4:3 using 800 calories and lower “maintenance” non fast days to try to educate myself on portion size. When weight loss slows I try to change things up so have just (Sept 1st) changed again to 2:5 prior to a 1st October first run at the Fast 800. I still have quite a lot to lose, between 3 and 3 1/2 stone to an officially healthy weight. It has taken me over 18 months of dieting to get this far with the largest part of the success coming after I discovered this way of eating and supportive community.

I have been on trips away and as long as you are strong and think nothing white and NO SUGAR things are easy
Dont drink
Dont be tempted by ‘one wont hurt’ because it will !!!
Think why did you start this new way of eating ?
You will have many trips away when you are your new thin self so need to get used to new eating away style now !!!
Tell EVERYONE you are on the 800 cal a day diet and gain their support.
They wont force feed you
Only you put the food in your mouth !!! (as my aunty used to say!!)
But above all, enjoy the visit !!!

Hang in there
I dont count carbs but aim at the 800 cals as book suggests
I have desk job so have to stand every half hour and then have a walk at lunch very short, and longer one at night. Have pedometer so just keep going until i see about 10000 (most times 8000)
I am away from alcohol for 8 weeks !!! as know this is a bad thing for weight (Liquid bread they say !!!)
I avoid everything bread like !!! No lapses at all. I am a bread lover (Have own bread maker now gathering dust) but bonus is I dont fancy any bread things at the moment.
Refused a crisp yesterday !!!
Keep going snoop

on 6 Sep 2016 at 08:55 in Welcome to the BSDWell, I woke up with a headache and 100 g more than I got up with yesterday despite sticking to the calories. Not doing as well as everyone else, but also very tied to desk due to work, and obviously eating more than recommended amount of carbs. Maybe I just have one of those bodies that is good at conserving energy!
Unfortunately, work takes priority at the moment. Should be able to ease up a bit next week. In the meantime, onwards if not inwards by that much.
End of first week figures
86.9 kg
+ 0.1 kg
– 1.6 kg overall (approx 3.5 lbs)
Waist 116 cm (-1 cm)Yesterday’s food and exercise
781 cals
90 carbs (too busy to make lunch so OH made sandwiches)
No exerciseSide benefits: no twinges in my diaphragm area apart from hernia, which has stopped gurgling if I lie on my side. A distinct improvement. Am also sleeping well.
Alcohol: one beer all week, also a big achievement for me.Well done everyone else!

Good morning folks, two mini goals just hit now, 5 1/2 stones off and the biggie NO LONGER OBESE 😀 BMI 29.9. A busy weekend/Monday following the Tour of Britain has upped my step count into the stratosphere rather than my usual barely scraping 5,000 which I credit for the good loss. I have also changed the fasting pattern to 2:5 instead of my usual 4:3 which may also have helped although as I only changed on 1st September and have just had my first weekend “off” I would have thought it would be too soon to see results showing from that.

on 6 Sep 2016 at 08:51 in Welcome to the BSDHi Verano, I had 3 weeks like that before my holiday. I didn’t eat any non-BSD foods in that time but I know that the calories had gone too high. My downfall was that I had started adding double cream to my coffee. I started with one teaspoon – which gradually increased to a tablespoon! it’s now gone back to one teaspoon. The legal carbs also had crept up. It wasn’t just the cream – I had stopped weighing everything and had started guessing. Which I now realise I was absolutely rubbish at.
I have done the 800 since getting back from my holiday on 3rd Sept – and have weighed everything – with amazing results.
3rd Sept – 11 stone 3 and 1/4lbs
4th Sept – 11 stone 2 and 1/4lbs
6th Sept – 11 stone 0 lbs – I am so happy. Am so looking forward to being 10 stone something. I am definitely off the plateau.
Blood sugar’s really good. I couldn’t have done it without this forum. It’s great that everyone is sharing their knowledge and experience. -
Morning everyone 😃🌞
Many thanks for your kind comments.
When I checked the laptop for ‘before’ photos I couldn’t find any. The few I used to have had been deleted for some strange reason😳LOL. I was the one taking photos, not being in them! Sound familiar?
But then I remembered I had an external hard drive that I’d used to backup the old laptop a few years ago. And there they were. Both needed slight cropping to remove excess background.
Nettle – when I saw them, especially the closeup, I was horrified. And remembered why I avoided the camera. But that was the reality of the ‘before’ me, for far too many years. When they were taken, in 2008 and 2011 my size didn’t really impact on me too much. I could still do most things I wanted to do.
But in the last few years that started to change. After a fall, when I hurt my back badly, my mobility was affected to the point where I often used a walking stick. My weight, combined with the heat, restricted what I could do when I was with friends in Texas and we went on a trip which included a trip to the Grand Canyon. The last straw was when I was visiting my friends in Italy last November. We were taken to an island and needed to walk up the hill to reach the restaurant. The mountaineers who had taken us looked at me and said if I got tired to tell them so we could rest! But then we turned a corner and I saw the next part of the road. It was steep, and long. I could have cried. But I had to say I couldn’t do it. I was nearly in tears. Later my friend told me she was glad I’d said it, because she doubted she could have done it – she has a bad heart! Fast forward to my trip to my Italian friends a few months ago – I could do anything they could do. And they’re about 20’years younger than me. From dragging myself up the outside stairs to their flat, I could now go up with ease.
Switzerland – I did hesitate about posting the ‘before’ photos, but decided to do so for the sake of completeness. The closeup was taken outside the Moulin Rouge in Paris, the full length pic in the doorway of the jail in Terlingua Ghost Town in Texas. The ‘after’ photos were in York last week.
When I went to get my hair cut yesterday, the hairdresser asked if I’d been losing weight? How much? How? As I was telling her another lady walked in, who goes to Slimming World. So she joined the conversation. The sw lady has been going for a year and is ‘fed up’ with it, so I told her about the BSD book and the basic information. The hairdresser has seen me go through the whole journey, and can see it’s had none of the adverse effects some worry about. Hopefully. Few more folk to join the BSD family😃

Week 17 has passed and I lost another pound bringing my total to 2 stone and half a pound.
It’s five months since my last blood test and I have to see my endocrinologist at the end of the month so I went for the test this morning as some of the hormone results take a while to come through. When I had my last test my blood glucose spiked at 138 mg/dL (100 to 125 being pre diabetic). It wasn’t that high the day before or the day after but my endocrinologist pointed a finger at me and said “You are diabetic”. I wasn’t prepared to accept that although I was prepared to be pre diabetic. I then stumbled by chance on BSD and am having amazing results. Before I went for my blood test this morning my husband tested me at home and it came out 97 – not even a bit diabetic. I am waiting for the official results and I expect my endocrinologist, who is a very nice man really, to point a finger at me and ask “Whose blood did you use for the test and whose liver did you use for the ultrasound?”

I had a really strange week. Lost 1lb and then over the next three days put on 1.8lbs!
Then yesterday lost 0.8lbs so back to square one.Better than a gain I suppose but disheartening.

on 6 Sep 2016 at 07:15 in Starting the BSDJust remember you are carb addicted and that’s what leads you to the chocolate! Once you can change your body to stop needing the sugar you will crack it – read all the threads here where people tame that monster with just one square of dark chocolate!
Count TOTAL carbs – but if you can give up sugar all to the good. I gave up sugar in tea and coffee when I realised how many calories/carbs I was wasting when I could have been eating other things!! I can’t say it was so easy but I am very proud I did it.
Eat good food
Plan ahead and count the cals and carbs (if you can keep under 50g of carbs per day that really helps)
Drink loads – eat a bit more salt as you will be peeing it out
You may have “carb flu” as you kick them out and change your body but stick to it
And good luck!It really really is worth it. Use these forums for help advice inspiration. Search box for previous comments.
Good luck to you both! New life coming! 🙂

It’s true that people only change when they decide to, sadly.

I’ve really enjoyed reading all your comment’s, hints, tips and progress reports this week, it’s really inspiring, I have had a stressful weekend but still managed to keep on track, I would usually turn to chocolate or biscuits, then feel guilty, but I know I need to change my mindset and worked hard to keep going, not only have I lost weight but fought one small battle, I’m sure there will be plenty more along the way, but I’ll tackle them one at a time.
I’m going to London for the weekend and know it will be hard to keep 800 calories up but I will get back on it when I return. Here are my weekly stats:
Start weight 14st 7lb
End weight 13st 8lb
Loss 13lbExercise 3 gym sessions burning around 300 calories
Food between 800-850 calories per day.I’ll post next week even if its a gain from my mini holiday, all the very best everyone.

On Biggest Loser (my only previous source of knowledge about very fast weight loss) they frequently lose a lot in week one then very little in week two before the loss steadies. It’s just the way the body responds to dramatic change in diet and exercise.
-
My go-to on any diet/healthy lifestyle change is to reduce processed food and greatly increase vegetables (ie from almost none). But on this plan that means I am generally eating over 60g of carb – from veges, a little fruit, and yoghurt. More meat/cheese would be too many calories and more fat than I’m already having makes me queasy (but I have plenty). So I’ve decided that my average of 60-65 gram of carb is fine, it’s all from good food, vegetables are very healthy and contain all sorts of good things my body needs. I’ll revise that thinking if I stop losing weight.

HI again ruthdownunder,
sorry took me ages to reply but I haven’t been able to log in for a few days for some reason…. But can get back on now..
I was wondering about all your fruit I was reading about in another post and thought it strange but if you have it at your home it must be hard to ignore hey, I hope you have managed to lessen it a bit coz by all accounts it will help you no end if you eat less of them.
I tried avocado the other day with some chicken and I can’t say it tasted much of anything… So why do people eat it? Is it really good for you? I can’t imagine even sour dough (umm!) bread making it taste good. hehehe.Still at least it is one more thing I have tasted… I won’t try to avoid it if I am out anywhere now as I know I can swallow it. 🙂
This week for me has been a slow week, I haven’t lost anything and I haven’t been eating enough so I guess my body is hanging on to all it can get but I am upping the good food intake and hopefully see some more weight shift soon. That is what keeps us motivated…
Have a great week girls/guys

I started my BSD 800/16:8 intermittent fasting journey on March 28, and made it through 6 weeks before being ordered to go to amaintenance level of calories by my cancer care team. They had some crazy notion that I might need extra energy to heal from surgery and/or make it through radiation. 🙂 I documented Take 1 here: https://thebloodsugardiet.com/forums/topic/dear-diary-my-life-on-the-fast-800-168-intermittent-fasting-diet/
I’m back, on the other side of cancer (clean margins on the surgery, all the best receptors, and nearly side-effect free radiation). Now free from dietary restrictions, I am making one more attempt at achieving daibetic remission. (I moved from diabetic to pre-diabetic in the first 6 weeks of the BSD). I maintained the improved response to consumed carbohydrates – but the background levels (as reflectetd by non-food-related testing) crept up for a variety of reasons.
I probably won’t document it as well as the first attempt – since my life has gotten considerably more hectic. I’m also more confident of my BG levels, so I don’t test as frequently {although that will be balanced by the fact that when I do test, I’m more likely to be testing something I expect to elevate it.}.
I ended Week 6 a 138 lbs. During cancer care, I bounced around between 132 and 135. Eating enough low-carb food to maintain was as challenging as I predicted it would be, but I did my best.
Here’s Week 1 (Take 2):
Week 1
Fasting blood glucose: M: Unknown, T: 5.56 mmol/l W: 5.5 Th: 5 mmol/l F: 3.89 mmol/l S: 4.33 mmol/l Sun: 4.39 mmol/l
Starting weight (this week): 135.5 lbs – Ending weight: 129.2 lbs. Loss 6.3 lbs
BG High for the week: 7.39 mmol/l, Low for the Week: 3.89 mmol/l, Average for the week: 5.49 mmol/l Average fasting BG for the week: 4.73 -
The challenge is that as his health deteriorates – and he will get some very hectic conditions over time – you will find yourself having to ‘look after him’ which can lead to a lot of resentment down the track as it is via something that could have been avoided or minimised if he took action. It also impacts your joint quality of life – ability to travel, socialise etc. My mother went through this with my father and a good 10 years of the last active years of her life were subordinate to taking care of my father for a condition he could have reduced/managed via diet and exercise. So it might be worth you also having a chat to him about the long term consequences of diabetes and it’s impact on you and the rest of the family. Maybe the ‘gentle persuasion’ is not necessarily the right way to go but consider some straight talking and shock tactics. I know some people tend to think “oh well I’ll just take insulin and it will be mangaged’ not really realising the reduction in life expectancy, mobility, vision impairment, amputations and other debilitating conditions that are the consequence of long term diabetes.

I really need to do this and even thinking until the end of November so I can finally shift 10kilos minimum.

on 6 Sep 2016 at 00:41 in Welcome to the BSDHi All,
Could I join this thread? I started Thursday 26th August. Lost 3 lbs in the first week. Nil since then, though I went overboard this past weekend with desserts when friends were over. And, I realized I really need to count carbs. When I looked back over the week’s carb totals, they were 60-90/day. I think that’s stalling me out after the initial loss.
I only have about 20 lbs to lose, but have tried for years to lose it with exercise and different diets. This one makes sense to me, but I’m working at breaking old habits, raising 4 kids, and find it going slow. I’m not diabetic, but was obese as a teenager and type 2 diabetes is on both sides of my family. Plus, I have an obnoxious nibbling habit (and sweet tooth!) to break whenever I’m stressed.
It’s great to read your success stories, especially in the beginning phases.

on 6 Sep 2016 at 00:08 in Starting the BSDHi Caro-I’m new to this site & have just seen your message. How are you getting on? I’m about to start this new way of eating (not a diet, not a diet) and feeling a bit overwhelmed with it all. I’m a mum of one and I need to lose weight before I’ll be happy to try for baby number 2 (don’t want to be classed as high risk because of my weight). I’ve read the book & got some recipe ideas but I’m a little confused whether you’re supposed to go by total carbs or sugars in carbs. Like you, I could quite easily munch down several chocolate bars a day but now is the time for me to take control and get healthy! We can do this 🙂

Hi GALLEYSLAVE this might sound harsh but you can’t force yr husband to do what you know would be best for him.
He has to take responsibility for his own health but it sounds like he just buries his head in the sand and continues to eat badly despite yr best efforts to cook healthily and encourage him to eat properly.
Some people never learn, some people only learn after a big wake up call, some people just one day click and start looking after themselves.
I feel youre doing as much as you can possibly do – you cook good meals but he binges. You try to gently point out he needs to change and he gets annoyed. Theres not a lot more you can do on top of what youre already doing, unless theres an underlying cause such as he is depressed or worried about something and is comfort eating.
I understand that you’re very concerned for him but unless you can have some long and open conversations to get to the bottom of it,without him getting irritated,i really feel you should just concentrate on yourself.
There’s a saying ” you can’t pour from an empty mug,so take care of yourself first” . Then at least if his health continues to deteriorate you’ll be in good shape for helping to look after him.
I really hope things improve for you very soon X
-
Appreciate the ideas. Thanks. I have to simplify for breakfast and lunch on the run. Wow, that 50g carbs is challenging, but the reward is great.
-
My husband is type 2 diabetic and has been told that he will be on insulin by Christmas if he doesn’t lose weight. He only pays lips service to this and whilst I do my best to cook healthily he has binge sessions which he thinks don’t matter really. I don’t nag I just try and carefully point out what is happening but he then gets very irratible. This I think is because his sugar levels go up. He has been known to just have a piece of cake for lunch if out! I know you can take a horse to water but can’t make it drink but I just see his health going downhill, he has problem feet, etc

I have a rather unique swimming style too: my OH taught me how to swim and I can only do breast stroke, but with the oddity that my feet come out of the water and clap together. I guess it’s because I’m trying to keep my head out of water (I suffer with ear infections if they get wet inside). But no way can I change. OH is quite pleased I do this: he says if he can see someone with clapping feet out in the water, he knows I haven’t drowned!
Anyway, with the BSD, there’s hope for us all yet.

on 5 Sep 2016 at 22:53 in Welcome to the BSDThanks Snoop.
We have just had our 5 year old granddaughter for 4 weeks and towards the end we were buying loads of processed food so we could get meals cooked quickly to go off for the day when we would again eat more rubbish as picnics etc. Reading the BSD book I also realised the amount of this food she has been consuming during her lifetime and what the results could be on her health. I will be talking to her parents about this and their food choices when I have completely got my head around most of the information given in the book.
Both my OH and myself have at least 3 stone (I deal in old money) to reach our target weigh and as well as dieting have today started swimming (I think they call my type of swimming ‘floundering’) as I am super unfit. -
bit scary – are you sure that they are weighing accurately now?
Try them 10-20 times and just check you get the same result each timeIf they are out, but giving consistent results, it isnt too much of a problem.
A few weeks ago I discovered that mine were giving very variable readings (differing by just over 1kg) – so I replaced them.I once interviewed a personal trainer who suggested house cleaning could be very good aerobic exercise.
I decided it probably wasn’t a good match & didn’t use her. -

on 5 Sep 2016 at 22:38 in Welcome to the BSDI have courgetti in several guises – but my favorite speedy recipe is to heat them through in the microwave (60 seconds for around 100g is fine), then stir in some full fat cottage cheese.
The supermarket didn’t have cottage cheese this evening (well it did, but only zero and reduced fat) so got some mascarpone – lots more calories but fewer carbs. -

on 5 Sep 2016 at 22:31 in Welcome to the BSDmental4ever, you sound a bit like me. I have a holiday for a few days towards late September then a wedding in early October. But I was keen to get started. I did a few days of around a thousand calories but have dropped to around 800 in recent days. I was amazed how easy it was to adjust. This is an amazingly easy diet to follow, and you only have to look at some people’s results to see how effective it is.
Good that you and your OH will be doing this together. Sounds like you’ve got good motives as well, which always helps motivation.
Good luck!

Well the get active section didnt help but I decided to try the running on the spot again. Did 30 seconds run then 60 rest repeated twice more so did 3 times. Hope to build on it by doing it 4 then 5 then 6 times. Then increase 30 seconds to 45 and so on. If nothing else it will show if I have improved my stamina. I think you do it 3 times a week but might do it every other day. I also swim every day for 30 mins but did 40 yesterday.

You can enter what you’ve eaten or propose to eat and get a breakdown of calories, fat, carbs, protein and more. Someone on another thread here recommended it. I’ve found it quite useful for logging food and exercise. You can also start a journal there. They don’t seem to know anything about the Blood Sugar Diet, so it’s good to come here for support. But you might find it useful for tracking carbs.

Made that for dinner, with a few alterations, had quite a kick but was good.
I didn’t add as much salt, and I didn’t have garlic or celery – I thought I bought a jar of lazy garlic from the shop but alas… I picked up lazy ginger by accident. Anyway no garlic or celery but added a teaspoon of celery salt, and at the end I forgot to add the lemon juice. Clearly I shouldn’t be allowed in the kitchen! it was nice anyway haha.
I’m watching Labyrinth. A bit of 80’s cheese and Bowie in his prime.
