    Week 1 – 8lb loss
    Week 2 – 4.5 loss
Just got back from Week 3 weigh-in at WeightWatchers – lost 1.5lb. Rather disappointed was hoping for 3lb.
Made some mistakes this last week, ate lunch at Prezzo, probably drank a total of 1 bottle red wine during course of the week, 2 full fat G&Ts, 2 diet G&Ts and missed exercise a couple of days. All this probably adds up to equivalent of 1lb of fat, so if I had been good I should have lost another pound, which would have made a loss of 2.5lb.
    Calories today: 911
    Carbs today: 53
If I am going to reach my goal of being a ‘normal’ weight and in size 14 jeans by the end of June I am going to have to be much more disciplined.

    Hi Paul

I too love wine. During the day at work I’d be thinking I can’t wait for a glass tonight. I started BSD around end of November doing the med plan. Since then I only really have a glass if we go out for a social occasion. I’m not drinking alcohol at home at all. I really dont miss it. I have sparkling water and actually enjoy it. As I am doing the med plan I don’t count calories. This means a slow and steady weight loss of about 1 lb per week. I’m hoping this is now my way of eating forever as the norm. I’ve eaten out having Thai, Indian and pub grub all within the BSD principles (I tend to take on the task of booking the restaurant and check out the menu on line in advance so I know what I’m going to have). I have used a few of the recipes and try to do extra for the freezer so on days I can’t cook I still have no excuse. I also make other recipes BSD friendly. I feel like I’m eating well and rarely feel hungry now. Still drinking plenty of water. I just need to get exercise sorted. I do none and definitely need that in my life now. I’ve also found that my taste buds have altered. Food I thought I didn’t like I’ve tried again and enjoyed?! Weird. Good luck.

  • Hi Shrinky – seems you have already made some great progress and I’m sure you will have more success. The recommendation is to go for full fat even with dairy products, but I guess if you can’t stomach it, then best to stay with what you know you are happy with. The 0% Fage is only 0.02g more carbs and there is seems there no variation in carbs between whole, skimmed or semi-skimmed milks, so you are not doing any damage to carb intake there. Be sure to include fats in your meals though, as these are important on the BSD, to help you feel full and stay feeling that way for longer and also helps with the fat burning process.

Reading other people’s statements for their four week challenge, I realise mine is perhaps a bit light-weight, so I’m committing to getting to 8st 9lb, increasing my activity and hydration and finally to start to build time into my day, specifically for some meditation.

Hi Lilybean – second week was fine, especially spurred on by a great first week loss! I eased myself into it gradually over 2 weeks, gradually cutting down on carbs. Hope you find, as I did, that the cravings for your favourite ‘stuff’ disappears by the end of Week 3. My tastebuds have definitely changed and the thought of a great big serving of ‘pudding’ is not appealing at all! Keep it up.

  • Topcac yes thank you I’m fit and well and looking forward the next challenge. I’ve done quite well the last few weeks so just want to keep up the momentum now. It seems that maintaining is not that easy but with the help of all the posters and other maintainers I’m sure you will manage to stay on track.

  • Hi NancyB – good luck with your weigh-in. I’m sure you’ll do great. I’m really impressed with how you’re doing 16:8. I’ve been trying to push my breakfast back to 10am which is just about doable depending on how much exercise I throw into the 4 hours before. However I rarely manage to eat earlier than 7.30 by the time I get home from work.

Also whilst I am pleased with my weight loss it’s not quite as much as I thought it was – mainly because I didn’t convert lbs to stones very well. So whilst I’ve lost over a stone and a half so far I’m not as close to the 2 stone loss that I thought I was.

Still I’m less than I’ve been since I lost 2 stone on a ‘heartbreak diet’ so I’m still happy!

Maybe allow yourself a square or two of dark chocolate, or some yogurt with a few berries? Try not to give into temptation in a big way, ‘cos you will only be beating yourself up tomorrow, for giving in. As I remember it, I struggled more in week two than I did the first week. Stick with it though, it does get easier and after a while you won’t be so tempted to comfort yourself with something you know you shouldn’t have.

Maybe a better solution would be a soak in a hot bath and some relaxation. But whatever you decide, be kind to yourself and remember that even if you do go off piste menu-wise, tomorrow is a new day and gives you to opportunity to mitigate any transgressions of today.

  • Hi Pinklolly – have a good dig around on the forum, there are lots of folks out there with inspiring stories, who have lost incredible amounts; come off medication; improved BP as well as BS and seen better cholesterol results. Some of us lose more slowly than others, so just embrace all the success that comes your way, no matter how small. Many of us are in for the long haul and know that this is a new way of life, not a quick fix and return to the old ways.

Be sure to use the forum to keep you motivated, ask for advise and support when needed and be sure to let us know how you are progressing. Welcome to your new life!

Hi everyone – feel as though I’ve hit the brick wall today. Had a tough day at work (still here at 19:25!) and have a headache and feeling like some comfort food. Wont get home for dinner until about 20:30 which fortunately my daughter is cooking for us – Teryaki Salmon and courgetti but would really like something sweet and satisfying – I have enough cals left for something but don’t want to go mad and go too far over the 800 cals, any ideas?
Last week was a breeze but today seems really hard for some reason. Hopefully will be better tomorrow.
Keep on track the rest of you and stay strong – I know it will be worth it. :-))

  • My goal for the next four weeks is to try and get into the stone below! I have lost one stone so far and am on week 7 day 3. The scales are not moving much at the moment and I have been static for the last few days and I haven’t lost much at all in the last couple of weeks! If I can lose 7lb in the next four weeks that will take me into the 10s!! Not seen them for years! I need to lose another two stone to get me to the top end of my BMI. I am also trying to increase my steps. I am only averaging about 5500 at present so I need to try and increase them over the next month or so. Two great challenges ahead before 21st March and hopefully with the lighter evenings I can achieve them!

  • Hi all. I did start this challenge with good intentions but it all went out the window. My brother was very ill so a lot of time went into caring for him. As he didn’t live near me there was a good deal of travelling involved and as I also work away from home i just lost the momentum. Sadly he died a week ago and I am just back at work today.

I haven’t weighed myself for at least three weeks and I’m sure I’ve gained a few lbs. I certainly haven’t been paying much attention to the carbs. Just ate whatever was available.

Hoping to join the new challenge with a weigh in tomorrow. I’ve been reading the posts and they have kept me going. Everyone has done really well whether they got the desired result or not. Perseverance is everything and this next four weeks will make all the difference.

  • Hello Everyone – I am new…. I started the eight week challenge today after a series of unfortunate events!

My husband bought me gym membership for Valentines Day and during my assessment the trainer took my blood pressure… it was insanely high. She was sent me packing and I needed a permission slip from my GP to say it was OK. I saw the practice nurse who said there was NO WAY she would allow me to jog to the post box let alone train in a gym. My BP was just too high… after hours of resting and testing and donating bloods and ECG they let me walk out of the surgery… under the agreement that I did this diet. (I am also pre-diabetic)

So this is my prescription. 8 weeks of BSD.

I have around 20kgs to lose, but more importantly shift my diastollic pressure from 121 to somewhere in the 80s.

If I don’t follow this plan, I will have to go onto medication for life – which I know isn’t a huge deal but to me it feels like the beginning of the end… and I’m 37!

Its too soon to resign myself to medications and a life of caution. If i’m honest… I knew this train was coming….

Has anyone out there had high BP and seen a reduction? Anyone lost 20kgs in the 8 weeks?!

Happy to be here…. choosing life 🙂

Hi, I am new too, I have been following this diet for 7 weeks and have lost 25lbs or 11.3kg. I have to admit that I don’t really calorie count as I Iove Green veg and salad and tend to pile it on the plate! But stick to the Mediterranean principal….. At a guess I am on roughly 1200 calories, but quite active and check my blood pressure, pulse and blood sugar regularly, which are all healthy definitely due to the diet as I still weigh 14st 8lbs which for a 5’8″ woman is still 3 and a half stone overweight. It’s easy now as you can settle into a normal healthy eating habit for life, something that is sustainable. Good luck to everyone

Hi, I started on 20th Feb too, so hope it is o.k to join you guys. I have never been on a forum before so it is a new experience. I have also been on diets before and they all work if I am in the ‘zone’. I am feeling in the ‘zone’ right now so let’s see if it lasts longer than a week! Sticking to 800 calories is tricky even without snacking. I figure though that as long as I am aiming for that if I go over slightly, I’ll still be losing weight. I’ll try to stick to 800 though. I haven’t decided if I am doing all seven days. Work days are o.k but it is harder at the weekends with the children. I have put on 2 stone since my second pregnancy so would like to lose that in the first instance. Then I will be back to trying to lose the stone I always lose and then gain again! Finding time to exercise is my problem- I enjoy it I just don’t have an hour left. Oh and maybe wine! Keep going everyone

Those sneaky carbs hide in all kinds of places, so it’s best to check. Full fat milk is around 62cals/5.4g carbs per 100ml, so you can see that those carbs would soon add up. The occasional latte is not a disaster, but better as a treat than a habit perhaps.

  • Hello all – final weigh in for this challenge and I am 4.75lbs down from four weeks ago. I will admit, however, that I was still carrying some ‘festive’ weight at that point and I have had some terrible days but, net, I seem to have come out alright. This was the month when my ‘official’ weigh ins started to start with an 8 so I’m delighted. I am in maintenance but, as Krysia so rightly says, it is imperative to keep the motivation going, as the ‘just one won’t hurt’ mentality is dangerous, especially when you’re an ‘all or nothing’ gal like me!

Thanks goes to Marsie for this challenge and the next one, and all I can say is thank goodness we have Verano back and healthy after the worries of this time four weeks ago!

See you all on t’other side

Hi Rose1958 – welcome on board!
There are lots of folks on here who have lost an amazing amount – check out captainlynn for inspiration, she has lost around 100lb now and Mixnmatch has also achieved amazing results. Like you, I am vertically challenged, coming in at approx. 5ft 1inch and I started out on the BSD at 10st 9lb, after losing 7lb and getting stuck.

My weight loss has not been as speedy as many have reported, but we are all different and any loss is a positive in my book. I am now at 8st 13.2lb (this morning) and have a target of 8st 9lb, but hope to push down to 8st 7lb if possible. I’m down two dress sizes now and feel better than I have in a very long time. I would say that it is probably wise to set a mini-goal (there is a thread for this) to help to keep you focused and don’t be disheartened if you don’t lose as fast as you had hoped.

The important things to remember are good hydration, include full fats to keep you feeling full, watch the carb intake and record everything you consume. And don’t forget to use the forum for advise, support and to let us all know how you are getting on.

    Hi Welshgirl
Well done on deciding to make a change and check your weight before it get’s out of hand.
Don’t worry too much about the fat, as it is this that helps you to feel full and to stay feeling full and 70g is not a huge amount. Keep an eye on carbs though and try to keep these at or below the 50g mark per day. Be sure to stay hydrated – and as I’m typing this, I’m conscious that I have been slacking in that area myself today! As you get settled in to this way of eating, you might find you can pull the carbs down a bit, which will help to speed up your weight loss.
Good luck and keep us all posted on your progress.

  • All my goals for this 4 weeks are exercise related. I don’t want to gain and will eat low carb, under 40g throughout, and no sugars of course, but loosening up slightly on cals. 2017 was meant to start with a structured exercise plan but didn’t. I’ve still lost well, but like JM, want a do-able exercise plan that’ll take me forward as part of a lifelong routine. Have signed up for a charity 55 mile bike ride in June. 21lbs to go, but because I’m T2D, want need a food and exercise lifestyle for the long term.

Eye exam today was really reassuring. Guy was great ,knows Prof Taylor and was enthusiastic advocate for BSD – he very kindly said ‘but you can’t have much more to lose?’ Which cheered me right up! none of the doom and gloom I get at GP who has me convinced after every visit that I am absolutely huge, that I’ll go blind and have my feet amputated at any minute! Eyes fine and it’s a tiny cataract but right in middle of eye that’s the problem, relatively easily fixed Really relieved. Mkx

So, I am doing this as a lifestyle change as I am not pre- diabetic but I am about a stone overweight.
I am a veggie and worried about fat in my diet. I am aiming for about 1200 cals a day at the mo while I try and lose a bit of weight.
This is what I ate yesterday:
Breakfast- 150g Greek yogurt with a chopped up apple and some cherries and 6 almonds/ 2 Brazil nuts- came in at 370 calories
    Lunch- 2 falafels, a carrot, 5 cherry toms, 40g houmous & 40g feta- about 350 cals
Dinner – mixed veg and butterbean Thai curry with courgette – about 400 cals so about 1120 cals plus I had a warm milk before bed.
Is that too much fat? It came in at about 70g fat, 50g carbs and didn’t calculate protein.
I won’t have the same every day obviously food wise but it was my day 1 and I was worried that I’m not getting it right.
    Thanks!

    Hi everyone,

I have the 8 Week Blood Sugar diet and recipe book, have done my food shop and am starting this tomorrow.

I’ve read the average weight loss is 14kg. Is there anyone out there who could tell me what they lost and what they weighed when they started.

I am only 5 foot and am 11 stone 3. I started at 12 stone 3 and have been losing 1lb a week (if I’m lucky) on 1000 – 1200 calories a day and am concerned that I may not lose as much as someone who is starting from scratch – ie has not been dieting.

I do exercise but only twice a week and am going to do more.

I really want to lose two stone by May 1st and have decided to try this approach, as I believe it’s a healthy VLCD (I’ve done others) and Michael Mosely is respected in his field.

Any advice, tips would be appreciated!
    Thank you.

Of the veggies you mentioned, the one to use with caution are butternut squash (45cals.11,7g per 100g). As a general guide, root veg tend to be higher in carbs than above ground veg. It could be worth checking the carbs you are consuming and where they are hiding – it’s quite surprising where they are found. If you are wanting to bring your carb intake down, you really need to look at all sources. Milk is also quite high in carbs, so maybe consider using less or swapping to an soya or almond alternative. Hope that helps a little.

  • Well, I’m starting this challenge at 73.3 kg so still not got under the 73. My goal for 4 weeks is to lose 1.3 kgs in the first 2 weeks, then see. Then it is my official BG test which I want to be 5.5 and weight down to 72 kg when I see my doctor. That’s it basically, so not asking for the world, just struggling to get weight moving again.

    Hi Michael,
Most of your protein foods will be low fiber. You can have a chicken breast or pork tenderloin or piece of salmon, and surround it with veggies, like brocolli, cauli, kale, tomatoes, green beans mushrooms etc and you will have a pretty good supper with lots of nutrition but low calorie and low carb.
The diet is constipating. Try and have a high fiber lunch or snack, like kefir with chia or bran and some Greek yogurt. This will help but it is a struggle keeping things moving. Basically we are putting less in, so getting less out. Lots of water is key.
    Good luck.

Hi Jan, thank you for the message. I have an odd relationship with alcohol, sometimes I can give and take it, others I feel like a full blown alcoholic when it gets to 6:00pm (wine o’clock) and I’m craving a drink. This inevitably leads to more and then bad food choices and as you say, that horrible muzzy feeling the next day at best, at worst a stinking hangover!! I am 100% sure it is largely responsible for my weight gain over the years. I have loads of social events coming up but I will just drive so it will make life easier all round.

I love that first week weigh in as the water weight vanishes! I’ll certainly post when I weigh on Monday.

Hello again Rose, I know what you mean it can be hard to keep to the diet absolutely. For someone my size, 800 kcals seems very low and the keto calculator gives me a 2000+ kcal per day deficit on 1000 a day + walking so I will allow myself a bit of flexibility. Still finding it hard and feel like I’ve been run over by a tractor but I’ll hang in there! So far today, a chicken breast with mayo, apple and 35g cheese and homemade celery, broccoli and leek soup which I calculate to be about 500kcal and a nice brisk walk. Still feel like cr@p but im sure it will pass:)

    Hi All,

I did very well yesterday until I looked into my cupboard for an evening snack and got attacked by a chocolate tart!! It is gone now (there were 4 of them but my sons kindly ate the other 3) but must remember to stay out of that cupboard in the evenings…. Today I got my snack out early in the day and put it in a non food cupboard. So note to self – visual prompts are your undoing. Avoid them as much as possible for these early weeks!!

  • Hi Everyone. I’m losing but at a slow pace which after my initial loss feels disappointing but still a loss. After 5 weeks I have lost 14lbs (6.5kgs). I keep reminding myself that on average that is over a kilo per week so not to be too despondent. However, the past fortnight have been slow with only half kilo each week. My clothes certainly feel looser but I stupidly didn’t take any measurements. I am calorie counting and only eating recipes from both books but admit I haven’t counted up carbs. I’m trying to focus on exercise more but as a working mum of 3 school age children find it difficult to fit it in between all the activities. I’m generally not hungry but still crave something sweet on a night which I can resist the majority of time. My main inspiration is being fit for my youngest who I had aged 41 and wish that I will be fit and healthy when she becomes a young adult. I to feel this is a way of life and will
continue at the end of 8 weeks. I still have a further 5kgs to lose and suspect it won’t happen by week 8. Do we keep going on 800cal until lost or do we move onto 5plus2??

Hi Lilybean – I was 193.5 lb when I started on 1st January. Now just over 7 weeks in I have lost (as at last Saturday – I don’t weigh every day) 21.5 lbs. My first week I lost 5 lbs, then 2nd week 3.5 lbs, 3rd week 4 lbs….fairly steady loss but not as quick as some on the forum. It has slowed down the last few weeks averaging 2 lbs a week for weeks 5, 6 and 7. To answer your question, second week was fine, I was so motivated by the first week’s loss and it wasn’t a huge struggle for me. Whilst I have not succumb to any alcohol or sweet things in the seven weeks, I have not religiously counted carbs or calories, nor have I exercised enough, so that is my next challenge to help the weight loss along.
I had planned a celebration at the end of the 8 weeks but it will probably be a very small one, as it looks like I will still have around a stone still to lose!
    Good luck with everything!

  • Hi everybody!
    Day 21
Start weight: 17st 8lb – lost 12.5lb in first two weeks.
Week 3 weigh in tonight at WeightWatchers at 6pm – hoping for another 3lb off.
Have been having brunch + dinner with a snack of 20g nuts inbetween.
Doing the 16:8 as well with ease – brunch just after 10am and dinner just before 6pm. Decided to add in half an avocado with my nuts snack every day as avocados are so good for you, but it’s alot of calories to add into the 800 limit.
Love the recipes in the book, this week cooked the chicken korma which was delicious much tastier than an Indian restaurant! And made the skinny aubergine lasagne when my veggie friend came Saturday which was lovely.

Shanshu: Well done – your weight loss is amazing!

  • Hi ColeOz – I use the MyFitnessPal app and find it brilliant – especially being able to easily scan packets of food.

I live but don’t generally eat with my housemates and eat with my bf 3 evening and one breakfast a week so I also found it difficult.

The first two weeks I made my own plans using some of the recipes in the books but scaling down to one or two portions and ensuring that I kept below 800 calories and 40g carbs. Despite careful planning I still had some wastage of items like creme fraise.

So for the last week and a half I’ve been winging it with the help of MyFitnessPal to ensure that I stay within the cal and carb restrictions. I also can’t do cooked breakfasts when I’m at work but then I got a microwave egg poacher and so now breakfast is either full-fat greek yoghurt with berries and mixed seeds or a poached egg with half an avocado. Lunchtime tends to be salad with a portion of protein (e.g. prawns, cottage cheese etc) and then dinner will either be chicken or fish with veg (sometimes this takes the form of a stir fry – other times I’ve made the pesto or other accompaniments) or leftovers from the weekend. On the weekend I am a little more exciting in my meal choices and have used the recipe book to make chinese pork meatballs, skinny aubergine lasagna, skinny cottage pie, veg frittata (although in each case I’ve amended the ingredients so they are less carby). Also because the recipes are often for six, I tend to be able to save and freeze a few portions (even if I’m eating with my bf).

I wish you the best of luck – I am not even halfway through 8 weeks and I’ve nearly lost 2 stone (or about 10kg) and I feel like I’m really getting a handle on this diet in terms of keeping it relatively easy and simple and liveable with day-to-day.

  • Hi everyone,
I’d love to joint this challenge.
Today is my first day on the BSD but I did do a ‘sugar free’ week two weeks ago. I’m going to New York on 21st march so hope to maximize weight loss by then.
I need to lose 3 stone to get to a BMI of 22 so have a way to go. I don’t know how much I can lose in 4 weeks but hope to ditch about a stone.
I was previously very large, lost 13 stone but have put 2.5 back on. I have my diabetic annual review at the end of March and having been in remission, want to stay there.
I have a question if anyone can help. I am addicted to Fage total 0% fat yoghurt and I don’t like semi skimmed milk- just skimmed. Is it okay if I continue with those two low fat food?
    Happy shrinking to all,

  • Hi everyone,

Some really wonderful goal-setting for the beginning of this 4wk challenge.

For myself, I really am aiming to have my weight move consistently downwards instead of this mad up and down over the same
1.5 kgs. Slowly would be ok, just as long as it is steadily.

To achieve this, strand 1 is to increase exercise under the guidance of the sports physiologist at my gym. Chest infection hanging on for yonks took its toll, unfortunately. Strand 2 is to redirect my efforts to banishing the carb monster that I’ve never really controlled, still snacking thoughtlessly. Strand 3 is an unpleasant thing to say, but having been with two of my siblings recently, I want to keep their images firmly in my mind – they are both morbidly obese, both unwell, both several years younger than me, and, sad as I feel for them, I don’t want to be them. Not to be obsessive about this, just aware.

Good BSD-ing folks. I’m really looking forward to reading the many and varied progress reports xx

  • Yes, Marsie, I agree – and thank you to Verano, although I hadn’t started back then, so never joined her challenges.

I think another nice thing about the 4 week challenges is that it brings lots of people from other threads together, who started at different times, posting under one topic, which I love – I don’t always like to butt in on other people’s topics, particularly ones which began before I joined the forum!

    Hi again, Paul,
I think the BSD is great because it is flexible – I didn’t do the 800cals thing, I just adjusted my eating to follow the principles of the BSD (weight loss is a bit slower but it still happens), but I know other people like to follow the diet exactly. As you progress, you will find what works best for you – never think you are failing if you have a poor week because our bodies sometimes take a little time to react. Discover what you like, ditch what you don’t. Almost inevitably you may find yourself straying from the path of BSDness – it has happened to most of us (I am a frequent faller off the wagon), it’s not a crime, just get back into the swing of things and no harm will be done. Sound advice from Jan, too.
    Good luck,
    Rose

Wow, usds, that is fantastic – you have done soooo well, and how great it must feel to now have a supportive nurse. I’m doing the happy dance for you.

Keep up the good work, and good luck in your next blood test.

Hey guys relative newbie here. Just started this a week ago and already 7 lbs down. Started at 191lb now at 184 lb which I haven’t seen in ages! So motivating. How does everyone find the second week of BSD I’m not sure what to expect.
