Hello everyone,
I would like to join this challenge. I started the BSD last year and did really well but fell off the wagon this year. I am now at 92.3kg my heaviest weight and I only fit into one pair of pants. My goal for this challenge is to be able to fit in to my other pants again so I don’t have to buy another pair of fat pants for summer. Initially I would like to loose 7kg to fit into said pants but I have 30kg to reach my ideal weight.

on 2 Nov 2017 at 12:46 in Fast 800I did well yesterday although I nearly missed my goal – ok I did miss it by 50 calories. I logged everything to find a total of 798 calories but still needed my evening snack to stop the dawn phenomenon and that cost me an extra 50 but still 850 is not too bad. Had lost weight this morning but not enough to get me excited.
Today I have had poached egg with grilled mushrooms, then chicken breast with roasted red pepper salad and tonight I am doing a sausage casserole which makes a total of around 650 cals which gives me room for a snack, again between 50 and 100 cals.
Cant wait to see the photoshoot MnM – I am a bit behind, could you remind me which newspaper so I can watch out for it online.
Have a good day everyone and keep on keeping on… -

on 2 Nov 2017 at 12:40 in Fast 800Theodora, your post really did “sing” to me today! I’m in exactly
the same place as you are, at 12 lbs. under target. Now when
I step on the scale it is with the hope that I haven’t lost more
weight. I just am not interested in eating more food, are you?
I haven’t figured out maintenance yet, either, so after 6 months
it is a work in progress for me, too! Like you, I’ve been spared
an addiction to sugar so I don’t care about it. When
thinking about what foods contributed to my grotesque weight
gain I would have to point to artisanal bread and cheese, plus
wine. Throughout the 10 months it took to lose 50% of myself
I completely abstained. Now I can get away with several glasses
of wine with no ill effect, but that’s no strategy for maintaining
weight long term, for me! This journey has been about optimal
health and not just being skinny again, and I don’t think my liver
needs to get compromised in the process. That would be insane.
Another observation I have made is that if I do put wine on the
dinner table I’m far more likely to cruise by the refrig about 11:00pm
and eat yogurt, so it does mess with 16:8 as well.
So, I’m right here with you, and we’ll figure this out together 🙂Wishing everyone a great day!

on 2 Nov 2017 at 12:31 in Fast 800Hi Caronl the Diet Doctor website is really useful just sign up for emails and you get a weekly letter. I was struck more by the second half of the article when she talks about the consequences of eating ‘cake’. I could so identify with that.
I don’t think there is any specific advice in the book and I’m sure somebody will come back with figures for fat and protein. When in comes to carbs it’s a bit of trial an error. Generally most people stay under 50g a day, 30g being favoured by many, but some people need to be low as 20g or less.
When it comes to fat that is a really difficult one. It takes quite a while for most people to get rid of the brainwashing that low fat is the best way. Once you accept that healthy fat is good you feel quite liberated. When I first started this WOE lots of people worried about what they would eat in restaurants etc. but in fact it’s easier to eat BSD friendly than low fat and it’s wondeful to enjoy a knob of butter on vegetables or fry an egg in oil.
Counting …. well at first it really would be useful to use an app or website just to familiarise yourself with the carb content of foods. Some food we thought was really ‘healthy’ is in fact very high in carbs. I know you don’t have a great deal to lose but if you want to lose and maintain then you need to know about carbs. The other side of the coin is that dark chocolate can be eaten in moderation, Lindt 90% has just over 1g carbs per square , two a day could quite easilly fit in your plan, if that’s your poison!

on 2 Nov 2017 at 11:37 in Fast 800Thanks for the link Verano. I’ve ended up spending 30 minutes on that website – the temptations of the internet! I was struck by the comment there ” The most common mistake when starting a low carb diet: Reducing carb intake while still being afraid of fat.” I’m beginning to feel a bit lost in advice to add butter, cream etc to my food – it feels so counter-intuitive. Is there anywhere in the BSD literature a key table setting out the ideal breakdown of protein, fat and carbs? I ask this with a slightly sinking heart, since I have had enough of counting calories/WW points etc, but perhaps I need to do some more groundwork.

on 2 Nov 2017 at 11:25 in Fast 800Verano, thanks for the link, and an interesting way of looking at things.
On the other hand, a burger has always looked more appealing than chocolate cake to me! (though I always used to have the bun too). But I just haven’t got a sweet tooth, so cakes, biscuits, chocolate etc have never figured in my diet, yet I still got fat!!
Obviously I cut out all the white refined carbs, but some of the things that made me fat are allowed on BSD – nuts in particular. I just ate far too many of them, grazed on them all day!! That and wine!! And pastry – I do (did) like a good pie or tart!
Upon reaching maintenance though (very nearly 6 months ago) I have reintroduced these things (not the white carbs obviously, although I do allow myself the occasional fries when out for a pub meal), I just limit my consumption – initially I was having a glass of wine every day, now I try to go 3 or 4 days a week without any alcohol (more for the sake of my liver than any other reason) and then allow myself a bit more on the other days, which incorporates social occasions very well.
Maybe my total lack of desire for anything sweet is the reason I have been so successful on BSD, both whilst losing and in maintenance, as I now eat anything I fancy (other than the pastry and artisan bread, which I love, and potatoes, rice, pasta etc, which I never particularly liked anyway) just not too much of it. My main problem for the future now, as I see it, is my total (no pun intended) addiction to Total Fage yoghurt!!! I am eating far too much of it – where I used to reach for nuts, I now do a fly-by the fridge and have yet another spoonful of yoghurt, and it invariably doesn’t stop at one spoonful! The dogs have become addicted too, and now expect a spoonful each, every time it comes out of the fridge!! However, this morning I weighed in at my lowest recorded BSD weight yet (110lbs, 7st 12lbs, 49.89kg) which gives me 9lbs wriggle room and is too low, so I really need to up my calorie intake again. You’d think I’d have the balance sussed after 6 months, wouldn’t you?
Anyway, good luck to all who are still trying to lose, I guess I’ve had it very easy, not having a sugar addiction.

We too are hoping to follow Mediterranean principles when we’ve finished the 8 weeks, now we’ve been properly educated on what constitutes a proper healthy way of eating. We may stick to many of the MM meals, as we are enjoying them so much. The 5:2 diet worked for me in the past, as well.
I was another pound down this morning and, although the weight loss has slowed down, it is still going in the right direction. Another few days and my weight should start with an 8. Haven’t seen that for years! Bring it on!

on 2 Nov 2017 at 07:35 in Fast 800Good morning everyone
As part of this challenge I’m going to try to post more – usually just the weekly report in – to help me keep ‘on it’ and maintain focus. So here I am bright and early…. well, early.
MixnMatch – gosh, that sounds quite exciting, being attended to by a make-up artist! Don’t suppose you get to keep any of the clothes? Hope it all goes well.
Mokovex – a new low is always a good thing isn’t it – always puts a smile on my face. Good look getting into the 134’s.
SueBlue – yes, I’m also going back to follow the same meal plans I did at the start. My blood sugar average is just beginning to creep up ever so slightly. I’ve been relying too much on meat and dairy (never eaten so much meat or yoghurt – and I’ve always loved yoghurt!) so this month I’ll go back to eating more fish, nuts etc. Like you, I’ve also been slacking a bit with my walking so yesterday I went back to 10,000 steps a day. Good luck with it all.So having said what I’m going to do, we’re off back home for a few days for a family wedding, so my main aim right now is to have stayed the same weight when I report in on Tuesday!

on 2 Nov 2017 at 07:12 in Fast 800sunshine-girl on my return from UK I had put on over 2kgs, which has now depatrted after a week on BSD. I too had seen my weight creeping back up over the summer despite my resolve to lose enough to fit back into a dress I intended to wear to the wedding- unfortunately once I had decided that the dress was not suitable for Derbyshire in October my resolve went to pot! That coupled with some stressful times was enough to set me back in the wrong direction. All that is a roundabout way of saying I know where you’re coming from and am sure that we are now fully recommitted to moving the scales in the right direction.
Thank you Verano for your words on the importance of having the right mindset – I am now making a conscious effort to take the positive view.
A good day yesterday: Greek salad for lunch, chilli con carne with cauliflower rice and Greek yogurt for supper, all jfor 796 calories. Not doing quite as well with the water, but I do have quite a few frui/herb infusions.
Hope we all have a good day today!

on 2 Nov 2017 at 07:12 in Welcome to the BSDMorning. This is early for me. I have my youngest granddaughter today whilst her mother attends a course. I am going to be sooo tired tonight! Plus I didn’t sleep well and Jovis woke me at 6:15.
Kazz, good luck with the results. I am sure they will be good. I love sci fi, and so does Jovis (just as well really). We also enjoy, Christmas films (I married Mr Christmas and we are Joseph and Mary, have watched a few already), a good whodunnit type thriller, comedies and action adventure as long as it is tongue in cheek a la Indiana Jones. We are not into horror films (unless they are funny), slasher movies, or war/realism films. Life is too precious to waste time watching stuff you don’t like!
I have to say about the food here in the UK, it depends where you go. My local pub serves ‘food’ and everything is covered in cheese! Another one is a little better but I find their salads to be limp. If you pay a little more and go to independent restaurants (not food chains) you can actually get decent food, cooked by real people instead of pre prepared stuff that is reheated. Portion sizes have long been an argument with me. I could easily only eat a child’s portion. I have trained myself to leave food on my plate rather than eat because it is there. (Bloody hells bells I am a saintly one!)
I told you about my new coat…it is a wool blend. The last one I had (bought about 16 years ago), was attacked by moth larva and it was such a shame. I don’t want this one to go that way, so decided to keep it in a ‘suit’ bag. I read that you can disrupt moths attraction by using Tumble Drier sheets, so put one on the hanger under the coat. Sitting in the car the other day I asked Jovis where the smell of flowers was coming from. He had no idea. Then last night same thing. Now, just before he died my father constantly complained to my mother of smelling flowers and when Jovis said he couldn’t smell anything….my mind went there.
Then last night as I was about to fall asleep I realised it was the smell from the Tumble Drier sheet! Jovis has just told me the same as he smelled it when he opened the cloak room door! So pleased it wasn’t the same thing my dad could smell. lol. What a twit I am.I will let you all know how I have coped at the age of 60 with a babe of 5 months. God help me…this one likes to have attention! Fingers crossed I can work some magic on her. Later peoples!
Lots of love

on 2 Nov 2017 at 07:00 in Starting the BSDHey that’s fab Hb1Ac Results AngS – no wonder you are pleased! Well done, you will be off your Medi in no time. I did wonder what your results were – and after such a short time too!
Also very interested by your ‘hard running on the spot’ mention. Is this another way of doing the High Intensity Training that he has in the book – I kinda ignored it because it said ‘get an exercise bike and pedal very fast’ and that seriously wasn’t for me, but running on the spot I can do – Brilliant ! Thank you 🙂
Well, I think I could possibly properly claim to not be diabetic now – after everything I ate yesterday – small hotel brekki (no carbs, but still) buffet lunch – sarnis (only a couple) and that tiny piece of cake and dinner at my daughter’s – beautiful (but huge!) steak and roast veg – again no carbs, but really an awful lot. This morning my fast bloods are still only 5.2 – not as low as they have been – my lowest has been 3.7 and I have been averaging 4.5. But yup I am really, really pleased. I did loads of steps too – a run in the morning (sunrise over Poole Harbour – just to make you all jealous!!) and an evening walk down to the sea in Bournemouth – (peaceful, moonlight sea!), and I definitely think that helps 🙂
Now don’t worry guys that doesn’t mean I am going with ‘I’m cured, I’m off, I’m back to a carb-filled diet’ !! I know this is a whole life healthier eating regime and I spent a whole chunk of last weekend pouring over all my ‘Diabetic’ Cookbooks for receipes that follow the Mediterranean principles. Like when I was preparing to do this at the end of September, I can’t wait to get started…gonna finish this bit yet tho…always impatient!
Have a good Thursday everyone!

You have my sympathies Mary – after those veggie burgers yesterday which were quite spicy, I was totally with you on the bowel front! I’ve noticed that hot and spicy sets me off these days! I’m going going to ring the doc today to see if the receptionist will tell me my coeliac result and liver function test results. If not, then I have a phone call booked with the doc for a week on Saturday so will find out then.
Allie – not sure about potato specifically, but i do know we are 2nd to the US for fast processed food. Our portion sizes aren’t as big (yet) but we are getting there with 24/7 supermarkets.
I like a bit of sci fi myself, so I hope you enjoyed Star Trek, Mary.

I’m aiming to lose 2kg, broken down over 4 weeks this will be 500g per week, (or about 1lb). This doesn’t seem much, but the last few months I’ve only been losing 1kg per month.
I’ve kept a diary since starting BSD and I’m going to go back and follow the same meal plans I did at the start. Also I’m on a new medication now where alcohol consumption should be limited to 4-8 units per week, so having a low intake will I’m sure help things along. I’m going to have 5 alcohol free days each week.
Exercise – I’m aiming for 70,000 steps a week minimum, have been slacking off a bit lately and only doing 50-60,000.
Good luck everyone! And all the best for your photo shoot MnM – how exciting 🙂 -

Not the best day yesterday. I managed to avoid carbs but intake was higher than I wanted. The 17 course lunch didn’t help. (I’m still wondering about the nutritional values associated with duck’s tongue!!!) I suspect calorie intake was around the 1500. 🙁
On a more encouraging note I managed 70 minutes cycling and 11000 steps.
My Blood Sugar reading was 5.9 six hours after lunch.

on 1 Nov 2017 at 21:40 in Fast 800I’d like to join as well please. I have a goal to lose 2 inches off my waist, which would put my waist below 1/2 my height, and will likely be helped by all the core exercises my kinesiologist gave me yesterday, and to get under 80kg if I can. I would have to lose almost 6kg to do that, so it might be a bit aggressive, so I would be happy with being under 82kg but might as well set a stretch goal.

I had my health screen at work today and it was not overly useful. Unfortunately my total cholesterol is still slightly elevated, but my HDL still within acceptable range. They weren’t doing LDL cholesterol or blood glucose readings as we were not fasting before hand. But at least I don’t appear to be worse than I was before with regard to cholesterol, and hopefully headed in the right direction now. I’ll likely see my own doctor in a few months and get it re-checked. For diabetes they just had an educational quiz which I didn’t do well on because the answers included that if you have diabetes you can still eat ice cream and sweets (after reading posts on here, I think the real answer is a bit more nuanced than that) and that you should eat 6 meals a day for optimal blood sugar control. So a little out dated on their information.
I am hoping that one of the reasons for my elevated blood lipids is that I finally re-lost the kg I put on last week overnight after quite a strict BSD day yesterday. I really don’t want to put it back on this time as I am within less than a kg of 85kg now and it would be really nice to get under that mark soon.
Hope everyone is having a good week. -

Kazz well done on not eating too much from that buffet! I was looking for a ready meal of fish in Marks and Spencers tonight and was appalled at how many meals were breaded or battered. Opted for Venison and made a rainbow salad to go with it. Unfortunately, after fasting all day, my calories have come in at less that 300….I will have to eat something later to try and make it up more. Poor me!

of fudge makes my teeth hurt!! In the U.S. far too much processed
food is part of the average American diet. I don’t know if I have
this right, but it seems that in the UK there is a heavy reliance on
starchy potato, mash, etc. Over here portion sizes are also obscene!
That’s why we seldom eat out nowadays 🙂 -
Hi – oddly no! The most common pancreatic issues are from gall bladder, or alcohol abuse. I had neither, which really threw the doctors for a while. Turns out mine was a rare form of genetic cholesterol problems, combined with bad diet and being diabetic. It was one of the worst cases they had seen, and on the third day in ICU they told me to prepare myself as they didn’t think I was going to live out the day. Had to get a will done and say goodbye to family – it was absolutely awful! I guess I’m stronger than they thought, because 3 days later I checked myself out of hospital against medical advice, went home and got better!! I never want to be there again, but find it so hard to maintain my sugars and things. I really feel like this diet is going to save my life!

Message from the doctor was to keep on the meds for now, but keep doing the diet and another blood test in 3 months’ time. He said if my bloods are still low, he will take me off Metformin. That will include Christmas unfortunately, but indications so far are good. 😄

Caronl well what can I say apart from go to the top of the class …. 4.5lbs is a great start and welcome to the water club!
Thank you Theodora and Allie for all that cheering, waving and jumping up and down. It’s obviously working! It’s ok for you to fluctuate Theodora because you’re at goal, but it’s not quite the same when the scales should be moving down. And as for having ‘no padding’ Allie I could always send you a bit of mine if you want it!
So much for the start of a new week for me. I went out for lunch today to a well know Italian chain. I just had some yogurt this morning and was going to have my main meal at lunch. I had chicken with a mushroom, spinach and a marsala sauce on the side. Chicken was stone cold, don’t think it had been freshly cooked, the sauce was tepid and gloopy and the side salad wasn’t fresh. So the lot went back and I had a Caesar salad. Well it wasn’t really it was more like an egg salad with salad cream and tomatoes with a sprinkle of some type of cheese. I ate some of it but have no idea where my carbs are now. Think I will just have to put a line under today. I have to be honest today has been one of a very, very few times when I’ve not found BSD friendly food in a restaurant. Just put it down to experience!
Hope you have all had a better start to the new week than me.

Hi Rach
I’m also a Rach and a veggie of many, many years’ standing. 🙂 I started the 8-week BSD just over two weeks ago, and I feel better than I’ve felt in years, and have lost half a stone. To supplement the book, I bought a Kindle book called, “Low-carb & Gluten-free Vegetarian: simple, delicious recipes for a low-carb and gluten-free lifestyle” by Celia Brooks. And I bought a quality spiralizer. It’s very good value and a really excellent book for this, and is also available in hard copy.
Because of wanting to eat pulses as well as eggs and dairy, I have accepted that I may not always be eating the lowest of low carb levels, but I still keep it pretty low. I was amazed at how I don’t feel hungry and don’t have cravings on this diet, and I put that down to having a lot less carbs and enough fat. It is certainly working for me, and I wasn’t even a carbaholic, nor do I have much of a sweet tooth. After a couple of years of scoffing at the very idea of making noodles/spaghetti out of vegetables, I’m amazed how good they can be. Even my carb-loving husband likes eating them *sometimes*.
So if using a recipe that includes chicken, I *would* just substitute Quorn. It’s not exact, but for me it’s good enough. Or use veggie low carb recipes like those from the book above. They are very simple but tasty, which means you get satisfied without spending too much time in the kitchen – or having to taste things as you go along, which can really lead to weight gain!
Good luck, and I’d love to hear how you’re getting on!
Rachel.

on 1 Nov 2017 at 15:42 in Fast 800thanks for the encouragement alliecat. I am okay with the 3.5 lbs but not with the previous 3lbs and 5lbs and 3lbs – which is a total gain of just over a stone through the summer and last week. I know I can do it and hope to have lost the 3.5 by next Tuesday.

on 1 Nov 2017 at 14:37 in Fast 800Thank you Marsie – I did plateau in September for 3 weeks, so I have to keep on keeping on as SueBlue says for as long as I can, but it is becoming much easier now I’ve got my head around the low carb healthy fat thing! Good luck to you too for the Nov challenge. 🙂

on 1 Nov 2017 at 14:27 in Welcome to the BSDAllie – I do indeed think it is really helpful to not disappear from these forums for too long, it definitely helps keep me going, plus I look forward to chatting most days at least. Yes, the Nov challenge has got off to a great start with lots of people taking part. The maintenance thread is a good read also! 🙂
I’ve just come back from a lunchtime meeting where a buffet lunch was provided – finger food – two bites. My heart sank.
I thought – illness on a platter! EVERYTHING was high refined carbs! Mini beefburgers, mini hot dogs, mini veggie burgers, chicken breaded goujons, mini sausage rolls, fries, small baked potatoes and banana cheese cake with crumbled chocolate brownie topping! None of it appealed to me and yet, that was just the sort of thing I used to drool over. I was starving, not having eaten for 24 hours, so I had 3 mini chickpea veggie burgers – minus the mini buns, to take my hunger away. In the meeting, we were all give individual bags of fudge and mini toiletries. I gave the fudge to a colleague (yak, pure sugar) and kept the toiletries from The White Company – very nice thank you! Just wanted to share.Ok, back to the grindstone! 🙂

on 1 Nov 2017 at 14:20 in Fast 800So disciplined, KazzUK, and it’s paying off for you, well done you:)
Well done SueBlue, on reaching a challenge goal, tardy or not, a goal reached is a goal reached! And 6kg is not to be sneezed at so well done 🙂
I’m intrigued at your use of both kgs and pounds/stones. I might try it myself as a shove along. When I converted 63.5kg to 9 stone and 13.9935 lb, why not just say 10stone for heavens sake, it was bit of a shock …. I’m too damned short to be 10stone.
Thanks SueBlue, see you over the page.

on 1 Nov 2017 at 14:14 in BSD Way of LifeVerano, try Jason Fung’s The Complete Guide to Fasting. It really does cover every aspect you can think of. https://www.amazon.com/Complete-Guide-Fasting-Intermittent-Alternate-Day/dp/1628600012/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr=
There are a ton of interviews with him on YouTube from his book tour in which he talks extensively about fasting (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v9Aw0P7GjHE ) , and his own Diet Doctor channel offers a number of shorter videos about IF for weight loss and reversing hyperinsulemia/diabetes (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1a2Fsfa8e4I ).
