Good morning. Hope the weekend was good. I’m away at the moment so my little legs are still paddling madly like a duck to stand still!!! Anyway I will set up a new challenge, Spring into Summer: Week 3 for anyone wanting ‘just one week’.

Hi MrsThompson and a very warm welcome to you. 😁
I felt just like you last August. In despair. I stumbled across this website whilst trying to find a remedy to the awful digestive problems that were plaguing me and boy what a lot I have learnt since then. Some excellent advice from Blackspot and Switzerland. There are some excellent threads here such as Take a look at this and Good eats. There’s a 4 week challenge called Zoomers reach for the sky if you fancy joining us, but whatever you decide, you will be welcomed and will receive much support if you want it. 😁

Hi Everyone. Hope you’ve all had a great weekend. I have mixed emotions this morning. I started my diet last week so today was my first weigh in. I’ve lost 1kg. I feel slightly disappointed as I expected more if i’m honest. I have stuck to the 800 calories and have kept my carbs to 20g per day as I would really like to reverse my type 2. I’ve been drinking alot of water and I’ve heard about the whoosh effect, does anyone have any experience with this? On the upside, my blood sugar levels have improved. When starting the diet, I was on 1000mg of Metformin and I decided to increase this to 500mg. On saturday I decided not to take the Metformin to see if i was able to control without medication. My fasting blood sugar level this moring was 5.9 so i was happy with that. I haven’t really exercised much so maybe I should increase that this week to get a better weight loss. I don’t have loads of weight to lose…7kgs would get me to my ideal weight so could that be the reason for a small loss? I’m very focussed and this thread is keeping me motivated..just a little disappointed the scales didn’t show a bigger loss asI feel slimmer!

  • Hi Caro, Speedy, Oh2bthin, Theblackspot – good to see you all and great that you are joining the next 4 week challenge. Black spot – it’s both really. We post out weight loss each Tuesday. You could post your start weight here tomorrow and any goal if you have one by the end of the 4 weeks. There’s also a weekly challenge thread.
Allie, as always, your valuable support will be much appreciated!
My goal is to reach 14 stone 13 lbs by 10 July. Good luck to us all!

I would LOVE a swimming pool in my garden!! But I have wonderful walking from my doorstep so I am lucky in that way.
So one week done and a 2.8kg weight loss. I am astonished by that. It’s slowing though – inevitably. So I am not expecting such dramattic results this week. But as long as it keeps dropping I will be happy…… Have a good week everyone. xx

Well done you on taking this step.
I did the BSD back in 2016 and went from 210lbs down to 180 lbs. That was my goal.
Unfortunately I let it slip. Slowly over the past 2 years and am now back at 210. Bugger.
I’m starting again today too. I honestly found losing the weight on this really easy, and if I’d been a clever boy and kept on the lifestyle rather than eating holidays in France and Spain with gorgeous bread…. Well, enough said.
My top tip? Get good at salads, big bowls full for dinner with tasty grilled protein of your choice. And salad breakfast? Why not.
1, 2, or 3 meals a day? I did all but mainly 2 meals a day. One as a brunch and the second as an evening meal. Skipping breakfast wasn’t a problem but morning hydration is essential.
So, That’s what I’m going to be doing this time. And afterwards? I’m going to keep on the lifestyle.
Saw the Rolling Stones at Murryfield this weekend 72-78 years old that bunch and running around for 2.5 hours solid. I’m 44 and got knackered walking around Edinburgh and to the stadium. The difference? Those old rockers are all skinny! Proper motivated me to get back on it!

    Best of luck
    Ps
Chugging water, mint tea and the like is very very helpful. Yes it fills you up, but for your body to burn it’s own fat and give you access to the energy that you’ve already bough and paid for you need to be really well hydrated.

    Hi Mrs Thompson
Welcome to the BSD. You’ve come to the right place for support. The forums are a great place to find non-judgmental encouragement.
You’ve made some pertinent comments in your thread. 1. You’re here to do something about your health. 2. You have admitted that you are a slave to carbs and have a sweet tooth. 3. You’re not on your own (‘my family don’t believe I can do it) – you’ve sent out an SOS in your thread and support is at hand!
The first 3-4 (10-14) days are tough. Your task is to follow the BSD and try not to buckle when your brain tells you that you need to eat non-BSD friendly food. Read through the forums and take on comments that others have made to get them through tough days. We are all different and while there can be similarities in solutions they don’t help everyone. Keep a diary (online or handwritten) about what works and what doesn’t for you. It’s a steep learning curve – but you’re worth it.
If you fall off the wagon just get back on for the next meal.
You will slowly notice that the BSD food is delicious and you will reach the point where you wonder why you ever had a sweet tooth. There will be a lot of changes to your body’s physiology which is explained in the book.
Remember – baby steps – every day or meal that you can stick with the BSD will see you grow in confidence, self belief and the knowledge that you can do this.
Be in it for the long haul and you, too, will learn to believe in yourself again.

I’ve just completed Week 2 of the BSD.

I’m not Type 2 diabetic but was / am clinically obese: I’m 5″3 and my starting weight was 15.5 st. I’ve tried various other diets in the past and have lost up to 1st at a time but am now the heaviest I have ever been.

I lost 8lbs in Week 1, which was great. I realised that the weight loss would slow down in Week 2 so wasn’t surprised that my mid-week weigh-in registered a 2lb loss – I thought that I’d probably lose a total of 3lbs this week. However, stepping on the scales this morning, at the end of week 2, and I’ve only lost 1lb overall this week. Somehow I’ve put *on* 1lb in the last few days.

I suppose that a 1lb loss is better than nothing: overall I’ve now lost 9lbs in two weeks. However, this is what always happens to me when I try to lose weight. I lose a significant amount of weight in week 1, very little in week 2 and nothing thereafter. Consequently I’m feeling very despondent this morning and am wondering whether this diet is actually going to work for me. If it doesn’t, I’ve no idea what I’ll try next.

I’ve been weighing everything religiously and counting every single calorie – even milk in tea (something I’ve never done before!). I’ve not had any white starchy carbs (another first) and I’ve stuck to things like berries instead of bananas to keep the carb count down. I’ve upped the amount of water I drink quite significantly.

Any idea what I might be doing wrong, or am I just one of those people who can’t shift weight?

    Hi all
I’m completely new here and today I’m starting this diet for the very first time. I’ve constantly lost and regained about the same stone in weight and my Health has suffered as a result. I really would like to be able to do this for the whole 8 weeks but my confidence and self belief is at an all time low. I look in the mirror and I’m horrified with what I’ve let myself become. Any support and encouragement on this journey would be very appreciated. I’m a slave to carbs and have the most awful sweet tooth so I expect I shall struggle. My family don’t believe I can do it, and I feel so beaten down I don’t know if I can do it either. How have you all found it? Any advice/encouragement?

Have not posted before but just looking for some reassurance. I started 12 days ago and lost about 7lbs in the first week then saw no progress after that. I weigh myself every morning which I find helps with motivation. Am keeping carbs low and trying to follow all the bsd advice. Have been loving it! But last night I found myself so hungry (I think it may be pms) and had an extra mini dinner then couldn’t stop! I had probably well over 2000 calories (some of that banana muffins – eek!) and half a bottle of wine and some dissarono! Feel awful this mor OMG but determined to carry on. Does anyone have any tips for PMS sugar cravings? I’ve read HTP5 can work? (Sorry if I have posted this in the wrong place?!

I weighed in this morning at 83.2kg and my sugar before breakfast was 8.3. I have been taking my sugar before breakfast for a few months now and it always seems high. Anyone else have this problem and how did you fix it??
Looking forward to reading all your comments.

Hi Frog! So funny, I just tucked a frittata into the oven and sat down to rest a few minutes before dinner and (of course) got on the BSD forums and saw you had frittata too! You did chard, mine is sautéed zucchini with fresh basil and fire roasted chili peppers, cheddar cheese and eggs — it has become one of my favorite dinners, especially when I am worn out from a day of gardening.
I would love to grow rhubarb — it’s wonderful — but our local gophers like it above all else and they eat them all, pulling the plants down into their tunnels. Little creeps. Luckily they leave almost everything else alone and I usually toss some chicken wire into each hole to disuade them even trying .
Last year we had deer-mageddon — first time in 31 years they decimated the garden and killed two fruit trees. Where is a mountain lion when you need one? Maybe we’ve got one hunting because this year we are deer free (knock on wood)!!!

Maggie, Josh Axe is well known here in terms of alternative medicine on my side of the pond…Are you familiar
with his new publication, “Eat Dirt”? He attributes all illness, as Hippocrates did, to aberrations in the gut. He
divides this into 5 prototypes, and these classifications can be found on you tube. I’ve been using his product,
collagen bone broth, for awhile now. One of things that is most interesting is his description of prebiotics as
“the fertilizer” that nourishes the probiotics that balances gut health. In each category, he lists whole foods
that are top of each lists! Kefir and kimchi do find their way into my diet on a daily basis, along with unpasteurized
sauerkraut. He’s very passionate on “leaky gut”! Keep up the research!

    Hi JGwen
I got to it by increments, 16/8 20/4 then a full 24 between evening meals. Then I decided to go for it, partly to shake things up and also because the metabolism rises in the 48 hour of fasting, so I’d have that to bring back.
Also, the autophagy was a big attraction. The idea that it can spring clean your brain is so exciting. Have you come across this site https://draxe.com/benefits-of-autophagy/
He suggests that autophagy possibly may be achieved through ketosis, without extended fasting.
The first day was a bit of a challenge at first but today really has been a breeze and there is no feeling of hunger.
I was nearly all water (I got an infuser bottle so the water tastes pleasantly of raspberries!) though first thing was coffee with almond milk.
I found a video earlier (sorry, didn’t bookmark it) where coffees with thick cream, butter and MCT oil were tested for glucose and ketone reactions. None spiked glucose noticeably but MCT oil (I’m taking that as coconut) significantly raised the ketones. Conclusion was that none broke a fast, though MCT definitely helped.,
I know this will sound like a fevered imagination, but this afternoon I noticed a blister on my arm which I must have got from brushing up against a plant. Now it’s almost gone. Very strange. Perhaps it’s autophagy army at work.
Jason Fung is quite clear that none of his patients who were fasting had any issue with loose skin, which does make fasting very attractive.
Maybe I find it comparatively easy because I’ve never been a big eater, though what I ate was absolutely the worst food. But I think your body will tell you when you’re ready to make the leap. Good luck whichever way you decide to go.

HI Sunshine & California Girls, hello again!
Good weekend – very busy, so not too much time to be tempted off diet, a small glass of champagne aside!
I have a plot in a local community garden, new this year, and made my first proper harvest this evening – I think I will be eating chard and bok choy for the rest of the week. I used a recipe for chard fritata that helpfully specified “a bunch” of chard, so a lot more like chard with some egg than chard fritata, but tasted very good. My rhubarb was white and green rather than much pink, but it tastes very good.
I’m generally pleased with my calorie, carb and protein intake – fibre seems a bit low. (but looking at the fibre content in the dehydrated diet supplements, the fibre wouldn’t have been much different with those).

The thing that concerns me about the programme is that this ‘liquid’ diet (although it will be healthy) is not the one that should be rolled out by the NHS or one that people will watch and think they can do this too. This is more medical style intervention and not a sustainable diet. It is going to be really important how this comes across to the general obese or diabetic person looking for a solution to their problems (pun not intended).

    Hi Maggie,
Well done on your achievement, could you share any hints on how you achieved this. Did you have coffee with cream, or bone broth, or just water?
My bathroom scales have been reading in the same 2kg range for the last month, but I have been loosing inches from my waist and hips. Looking in the mirror I can see an underlying shape below the fat and but I am worried about loose skin. So I have been trying to weigh up the option of fasting mimicking diet, against fasting. I don’t struggle with 20:4 as an eating pattern, but somehow the idea of not eating at all for 36 hours seems much harder.

I didn’t experience tiredness along the way and wonder if you’re properly hydrated? You do need to take extra minerals- I use Himalayan salt- to enable your body to use the water, rather than it just passing through.
Otherwise I’m afraid I really can’t help. Sorry.

I’m on an extended fast, which has taken me by surprise. I intended to do a 36 hour- ie evening meal on Friday to breakfast today, Sunday, but felt energised and not at all hungry so carried on fasting to dinner time but still not feeling hungry so going for 72 hours.
I’ve had so much energy today I haven’t been able to sit still! I went to the local Sunday market and bought a huge bag of cherries and don’t even know if they taste nice; I’ve decided to make them into a compote and freeze. My 3lb wedge of Jarlsberg will be eaten 😄
So many bargains I couldn’t resist, and I’m on a bit of a high to be honest.
So, what I wanted to say to all you lovely people, is that I found it amazingly easy. The last time I felt like this was when I was at university and was pretty casual about eating. If only I’d identified then what was going on I’d have saved myself years of yo-yo dieting.
So if anyone is thinking of dipping their toe in the extended fast pool I can only say it wasn’t hard.
As for outcomes, I’m hoping it’s going to shake me out of my current stall. I’ll let you know.

P4whh, congratulations on a loss of 29 lbs. in 3 weeks! To what do you attribute this very unusual rate of loss?
Most of us have to fight a lot harder to accomplish a stone a month, and have to go quite low in daily carbs

  • HI guys, I’m never sure if I’m on the right thread – but here goes!
I’m on Day 10 and my goodness, it’s going much better than I expected. I have so far lost 4 kilos. Having a few problem because the shakes I an using for 3 meals a day have been delayed so I am making it up a little. But by Wednesday should be backo track with 3 shakes and 1 salad a day. I never, ever, ever thought I would do shakes, but I have to admit (I have real problems about food habits and a LOT of weight to lose, I suppose half my weight though I am not aiming for that) using them really helps as no decisions apart from what flavour)
I’m no longer sure if I am ding the Newcastle Diet or MM’s BSD! But loving it!
Big thanks to all those on here who encouraged me to start (again) when I was dithering and procrastinating. X

I’m late reporting on Tuesday weigh-in, but here goes!

    168 pounds/12 stone/ 76.2 kg, down from 170.7/12.19 stone/77.4 kg the previous week. So down 2.7 pounds.

To get out of the stall I had been in I’m trying temporarily dropping dairy and filling out the holes with more veggies, salad, etc. I think I was leaning pretty heavily on the dairy and it may have been keeping me at a sluggish rate. I adore yogurt and cheese so it’s been a bit tough but I think it’s helping at this stage.

Thanks for the welcome KazzUK and Allie!

Mariet—that was funny about you being miffed you were put as large-framed by the measurement, I was miffed that I was put in small/medium! 🙂

    Hi Everyone
In fact no.. UK food has not been poisoned by high fructose corn syrup in the way that US food has. But just look at Innocent smoothies’ advertising. “no added sugar” perfectly true they don’t ADD any sugar they merely concentrate the sugar that’s already there not least by removing the insoluble fibre thereby also messing with the microbiome (CleverGuts) and not in a good way. Bottom line? Eat real food not the synthetic crap the food industry wants to foist on you and get VERY familiar with reading the backs of the packs (ignore the front which is full of marketing waffle). In particular look for how much of 100g is carbohydrates. Carbs (except insoluble carbs) are simply long chains of glucose. So when you metabolise them you break them down into guess what? SUGAR! So even if its low sugar (low sugar Alpen for example) the carbs are just another name for sugar with all the attendant health risks

Liquid diets concern me too, sunshine-girl! They have been around for years, often contain sugars and excess
protein, but my biggest objection is that using them postpones the learning process where we discover what
a healthy, balanced plate of food looks like, and how to prepare it! Since this is a way of life, and a very satisfying
one at that, why not hit the ground running? Essentially, I feel the same way about diet plans that send you
    pre-planned/pre-packaged meals 🙂

I have just discovered that the diet they are covering is the 600 calorie (or 800 if it has been updated) LIQUID diet with warnings not to try this without medical supervision or if you are on insulin or have other medical problems. I hope this doesn’t make it appear so difficult and eliminate the real food element that we enjoy here.

GrahamSPhillips – thank you for posting that. I have just watch the Sugar, The Bitter Truth from beginning to end and I am so shocked. I am not saying I didn’t know some of this stuff but I didn’t know just how bad it was. When I was 13 my auntie was making me a cup of tea (yeah the English drink tea at 13) and when I asked for sugar she told me I was not allowed as ‘sugar is a poison’. This is 50 years ago and I have never forgotten and never added sugar to drinks or my food but I now know 1. that carbs are sugars and now, and 2. that nearly everything contains high fructose corn syrup. I also thought this was an American problem but I am sure we have the same in our food in the UK – check you labels. At least real sugar is glucose and glucose is a nutrient.

Another message to get out to the poor deluded public.

  • @ Alliecat – no, no need to apologise, your conclusion is pretty much what I was thinking and that I might be better sticking to WFPB (which is low fat). Because trying to do the BSD with that amount of carbs and (for me) high fat might make me put weight on or at least make it difficult to lose. (I believe that low fat, high complex carbs and high fat low carb can be routes to the same destination: like setting off flying Eastwards to get to Japan or setting off Westwards. One may be longer but still possible). I am thinking now of maybe 1000-1200 cals a day with WFBP, which would also enable me to exercise, aerobically, hard.

I am not a diabetic, no physical health issues Sunshine-Girl. Yes, meat, eggs, cheese would make it *much* easier.

JGwen – thanks again for your thoughts, it seems that I would be caught between WFPB and low-carb ‘stools’ if I did this WoE: not really conforming to the tenets of either one, pitched in the middle, with poor results.

I might actually try my own variation on the old-fashioned Rice Diet (I can imagine the looks of horror on your faces! :-D) eating wholegrain rice and veg. At the end of the day, I still think loss boils down to calories in and calories out, with how we choose to make-up those calories accelerating or slowing the loss down. I have lost before by adhering to the WFPB, but it is not as quickly as I would have hoped for at this time.

Thanks again for all the lovely replies, and best of luck to you all in continuing your paths of health improvement!

I have read the overview provided by Krysia and was dismayed to see that they are going to be put on a liquid diet. It warns that this should not be undertaken at home without medical supervision and is not for people on insulin or with other medical problems. Oh dear, are they going to make it appear so difficult that no one will want to do ‘our’ diet i.e. real food and 800 calories. I am going to hold back on judgement until I have watched it.

Dont forget to watch the Diabetes programme on Wed and Thurs or at least record it. I think the world has finally come around to out way of thinking.

  • I’ve just lost my post while I checked if lightswitch is diabetic. Alliecat is right, there is no way you can keep to the low carb and 800 calories when eating the pulses, lentils etc you include in your diet. You could still do it by add some extra protein like meat, dairy, eggs etc but these are not allowed. Just researching and see tofu is a good source of protein and low in carbs and calories. This diet is hard to negotiate even for a non vegan so would make your life super difficult. However, I have seen posts by vegans and you could put it in the search engine to see what others are saying.

Hi everyone, I guess I am at an advantage having a swimming pool in my back garden so getting lots of exercise but the body soon adjusts and being a diabetic I have to be careful I dont overdo it. Anyway I had 40 minutes in the pool yesterday plus I did a 30 min walk around our local market. It was probably more like 50 mins but because it was slow and stop and start I only log 30. Lost another amount and already reached my 3lb goal but that is dangerous for me as that is when I think I can get away with a small cheat. Not this time. Hubby still didn’t have a drink. Since we did dry January he doesn’t seem to be that bothered and, bless him, he always ends up driving when we go out so no alcohol then.

Well done to others who have lost and those who have not yet revealed. V, I get what you are saying. I am running with 2 regular threads, this and Just Starting Again and find I am saying the same things but it is good to have a short sharp shock like this one as you can easily see the end product. I am doing the full 8 weeks so I can truly get back on track rather than dipping in and out and I have an almost straight run at it with no holidays or visitors. I will probably always follow you around as we are early starters – there were only a couple of hundred posters when we started. I am so glad it has grown and that the word is out there but it can draw you into too many threads. I am trying to keep it real and not become obsessed as I have in the past.

There you go Chimp – I do get the reference to Prof Steve Peters book, my daughter is into self help in the business word and I bought her Who Hid My Cheese. Hey ho…. Good that you have found a solution to one hurdle, the sporting event. I went to a Go Ape (back to the chimp) last year and was soon so exhausted I was going to collapse and my BG was slumped. Went to the resto / bar to find only panini or burger. I had a burger thinking I could throw away the bun but it was welded to the cheese. We are taking our grandsons again this year but I will be packing a freezer bag with chicken and pastryless quiche etc and this time I might finish the course.

Enjoy the rest of the weekend and keep on keeping on…

Hi Californiagirl – thanks so much for your lovely, helpful reply. It’s great to have such a balanced response, it’s helped a lot 🙂 As for my carb levels – indeed, sadly, mine seem to be very much on the low side. I’m looking forward to experimenting with the levels (secretly hoping they aren’t as low as I think, of course!) and may do this on my next round of Fast800 just to see if I’m right.

Hello all. Hope you are enjoying the weekend. I am on day 7 now. Nearly one week done and I am 2.5kg down. This is the same 2.5 kg that I have lost many times!! So next week is crucial. Will the numbers keep dropping or is this the usual merry go round of losing then regaining ALL the lost weight plus a bit….. I am feeling positive and optimistic this time though. The Science makes sense. I am at a weight I have been at fairly recently but I will be shortly heading into new territory…..and I can’t wait.

Thanks for all thoughts on social eating. 800cals a day is just so little that I can’t see how I can really eat meals prepared by others and stay within the calories so I may just avoid social situations for a while. Nothing in the diary yet so I will cross that bridge when I get to it. And the Fast800 is temporary anyway.

So yesterday I spent all day at a sporting tournament where my kids were competing. I knew the only food on offer would be burger van fare or sandwiches/paninis and it was too hot to take salad which would have had to sit in a baking hot car. So I had a bigger than normal breakfast, packed a Babybel cheese and apple and a handful of nuts and discovered that I was happy to wait till 6pm when I got home to eat again. That’s a revelation! We compete most weekends and I am normally starving by mid morning, and again by mid afternoon and again when we get home. Despite eating cheesy chips, crisps, chocolate etc through the day. How convenient to be able to just not eat for many hours!!! And not miss it. It’s not just being not hungry – it’s being not obsessed if that makes sense. I can be unhungry but desperate for food. Whereas this time I was aware of getting hungrier but able to quite easily wait. Very odd.
Anyway well done on the weight loss Sunshine Girl and Hedwig, I am sure you will smash it next week Verano. Happy Sunday everyone!

    Good morning.
Well done all losers! I’m sure you will get to your target s-g by the time you see the ‘dishy’ doctor. Just keep on keeping on…….!
DAY 6 of 7 so almost time to decide if another one week challenge would be useful. There is a new 4 week challenge starting on Tuesday and there is the ‘Just starting again’ thread. I would be happy to start another week but don’t want to ‘water down’ the enthusiasm. Sometimes too many threads end up with people becoming overwhelmed.
    Have a good day!

Elaar – very well done to both you and your husband. Terrific when the work reaps the rewards!!
There’s been some great advice already posted so not necessary for me to add anything further, other than to say you’ve found yourself in a good place.

We’ve just returned from 5 days in Cornwall. Weather was hit and miss but didn’t stop us getting out and about and having a good time. The subject of food did cause a few hiccups though. I stuck to my 16/8 pattern throughout but that meant foregoing the hotel breakfast as most places around to eat dinner didn’t open until 6pm. Didn’t bother me especially as it wasn’t all that appealing and I’m not really a “breakfast person” anyway. Got a few odd looks from the hotel staff when each morning there were no plates or bowls to clear from my side of the table, just an empty coffee cup!
I stuck to the low carb options throughout and didn’t fancy alcohol in the slightest but still returned home yesterday a whole kilo heavier.
I know this will disappear once I’m back in to my normal routine but a kilo in 5 days?!?

Hope everyone else is doing ok
