Throughout my life I have occasionally suffered from that cold sweat, weak muscles starving feeling. I am 53 and on day 3 of the BSD. I was out walking today, I have two dogs that I walk a lot! And I had one of those weak and feeble happenings, dripping with cold sweat, shaky, weak muscles and stumbling a bit. Struggles on & back to the car. In the past I would have stuffed myself with choc & carbs. What should I reach for now on this eating plan?

Just wanted to say that I love your posts as they are so inspirational & supportive.
I’m not much of a poster but love reading your posts.Thank you !!!

Thanks. I’ll have a go and see what happens.

Welcome to all the newbies and keep up the good work.

Patsy, yes gram flour and water and a tiny bit of olive oil. The recipe is in the recipe section, about page 7 (+/-).
I have had a range of strengths and brittleness. I have used a slightly more runny batter sometimes and I have made thicker and thinner flatbreads. Possible the pan temperature matters. It is worth experimenting. Some would definitely have been strong enough for fajitas.

Thank you SunnyB, yes everyone is very helpful. That’s a good thought about eating the 800 on my walking days. To be honest some days I don’t feel I want 800, but conscious that I need to eat enough calories.

CurlyGirl – 13lbs is wonderful!
-
TWills63 – wow, 10lb is bloody amazing!
>> 6 cream eggs in about 5 minutes
Easy! I think we may be twins separated at birth…

Maddy733 – well done on delurking and on your weight loss 🙂

Or perhaps a trapeze instead of the fireman’s pole? And perhaps a trampoline if you have space. Then you could swing from the top of the washer over to the trampoline and exercise there 😂
-
Today’s menu:
B – yogurt with mixed seeds and ground linseed topping
L – homemade veggie soup with full fat creme fraiche
D – sea bass fillet, with mixed shellfish foil cooked with olive oil and lemon and kale
various herbal teas and water -
I don’t think it matters what colour. I prefer pink too.

Hey Dippymint
Just wanted to say welcome to the BSD forum and well done you! Really excellent result and I’m sure it will redouble your determination to stick with it. I’m not sure about the question of whether or not to increase you calories on your exercise days. My inclination would be to add the calories to you intake on the days you are very much below 800 and not on those that are, but hopefully someone more qualified will offer some advise soon.
Meanwhile, keep going and keep posting. -

Dear Lucia, great news about the blouse, I also have issues with painting toenails etc but I am determined it won’t be for much longer. Have you considered installing a lap dancing pole strategically positioned near the washer to use like a firemans pole to gracefully get down from the washer? Heard they are also a good form of exercise. 👯

Orchid, there’ll be dishes with both lemon slices and lime slices so folk can choose either (or both!).

Well done Orchid very inspiring to those of us just starting the journey. Xx

on 23 Mar 2016 at 16:14 in Welcome to the BSDThanks for that Judith. I was going to ask how long it would take.
Silly question time: if they decide it’s not compliant, can it be amended or do we have to start again?

Hi madmare,
Yes, unfortunately we do need to at least count the cals and carbs in milk, even when its just in coffee. If you can make the switch to tea then all the better. But there are also milk substitutes you could try such as soya milk (don’t go mad if you have an underactive thyroid), coconut milk, almond milk. Always go unsweetened with these. They have fewer carbs than cow’s milk. -
Hi guys,
I started this last Monday and my weigh in on Sunday was 8lb down. I’ve been lurking in the forums and reading lots of great posts on here. You are all a very supportive crowd.
I have a question ‘re exercise and calories burned, I’ve started to walk 3 miles at least 5 times a week and on these days I burn approx 300 calories but don’t add to my 800. Some days I may only have 600 calories which would mean 300 if I take off calories burned, should I be adding g t he calories burned to my 800 per day or not?
Cheers Dippymint x -
I use calorie king as it gives the full breakdown of nurtition including carbs, I only count carbs. There is also an nhs website that just gives calories which is easy to use. Or the side of the packet, of course. Your eggs would be 80 to 90 cals each depending on the size.

on 23 Mar 2016 at 15:55 in Welcome to the BSDHi Orchid, it could take a week for the petition to go live as they will check that it is fully compliant before they make it available again 🙂
-
Wow, well done, Orchid! That’s very impressive.
-
Home made bread is probably worse than bought stuff, because it tastes so good, you’re likely to eat more! I love bread, but I’m avoiding it for the 8 weeks. I think that might be easier than trying to cut down and it will make me find more meals which don’t rely on bread.
Bill, I saw mention of the gram flour flatbreads elsewhere (and can’t find it again now). Are they just the flour and water and made like pancakes? And would they hold together well enough for fajitas and burritos?
-
Sparkling water with lime is a must! Looking forward to the party 🙂
-
Is there a reliable place to get accurate information on calorie content of foods? I haven’t got into gear on the fast diet yet but have started cutting out carbs and reducing portion sizes. My wife is not convinced of the benefits of rapid weight loss as she prefers the low GI type diet. I am thinking of going slightly independent and need to know what is or is not within the acceptable range. For example, I’ve just eaten a three egg omelette with a dash of cheese. Would be handy to work out how many calories it amounted to.
-
Oops, just seen the string……my reply to Bill was about the petition info, this thread seems to have been hijacked a bit 🙂

Thanks Bill and others for doing this. Anyone got contacts with the Newcastle folks to alert them to it’s existence – my be a few more votes!

on 23 Mar 2016 at 15:25 in Welcome to the BSDYou have all made comments about the declaration made yesterday about volouteers for NHS and notes of “lose weight and excercise ” as if it is Rubbish as the blood sugar is the perfect solution
All practicioners, professors consultants would agree the “lose weight and exercise ” is the easiest and most of beneficial for all. -even Prof Taylor
I do not test because I have had the support of an excellent medical practice to archieve the goals
Not rocket science, just plain common sense of which I was sadly lacking in my days of over indulgence -
Thanks for your reply Bill1954. What I expected, but good to bounce off others.

See you girls there next week
Are we having a party ? -
I’m not starving, hands up anyone who is ……
I don’t consider pasta, rice, or alcohol to be the pleasures in life
I do test blood and urine, if you don’t, how the hell can you say that you’re ok ?
Why hasn’t your doctor recommended the book to other patients and why aren’t we hearing from them ?
If your consultant thinks you’re so remarkable, why hasn’t HE recommended your method to others and why haven’t we heard from THEM
You seem to have an axe to grind with Dr Mosely as that is the only reason I can think of why a 72 year old T2D would first, bother to look for this forum, pick a teenagers facebook name as in happyslappy, and then go ahead and try to discredit everything that every user on here has achieved.
I won’t give you the respect of replying again, your story is so full of holes I am finding it hard to believe you when you say Hi -
Hi orchid
I’m one of those over the 8 weeks and staying on this for a while yet. When asked, the team said it was ok to stay on this for an extra few weeks before going on 5:2 but there are many of us staying on this longer term.
I’m in my 14th week with no ill effects. And lots more weight to lose which I want to do ASAP.
Come and join us on the ‘over the 8-week line and after’ thread to tell us how you are getting on.

on 23 Mar 2016 at 14:38 in Welcome to the BSDDear Janet 1973
Precisely as I’ve said
I have “lost” 3 stones in the past 11 years- yes that long
I am now described as “glucose intorerant ” , pre-diabetic but I have to continue as I’m doing or I’ll have to either go on a pill or the worst case senario Insulin
My consultant says to have type 2 diabetes for 15 years with no medication is something to be proud of as it seldom happens
If it works , more strength to your commitment but I would say in my defence is come back in 10 years and see if your control is still intact
Enjoy your forums but at the end of the day it is the individual’s choice and that’s what I have done -

May I suggest that we expend no more energy on ‘happyslappy’ (and to be honest, I doubt very much that a 72yr old would choose such a handle). While we are wasting time and energy on this sad soul, we are not using it positively elsewhere – life is too short.
-
Well said Bill
I think most of us can’t believe how easy this is. After years of ‘doing as we were told’ by assorted medical professionals – whether they be doctors, nurses, dietitians or whoever – we are coming to realise that the solution is far easier than any of them would have us believe.
We can help ourselves, thanks to Dr Mosley end Prof Taylor.
No more following the ‘party line’. We’re in at the beginning of something amazing which will not only help us, but ultimately save the NHS money. As for the food manufacturers – they can change direction (can’t they?). No more low-fat, they could produce low-carb. But the drug companies! Their profits could well take a hit. But why should our health suffer to keep their profits high?

Hi FoFi,
Before I say anything, I must point out that I don’t have children of my own so I would never begin to presume the challenges people face in bringing up their children. That said, for a long time I have wondered why there seems to be one rule for adults and another for children. I mean, why are we (the forum users) all happy to accept that cakes, biscuits, etc are all off limits to us as adults but we still want to feed them to our kids? Would we not be doing them a much bigger favour to encourage them to eat the same way we do? After all, they are going to be adults one day and if we don’t change their habits, they are going to end up with the same issues as us. Having been a WW member for years, I never understood ‘the kid’s cupboard’. Why were their parents actively wanting them to eat all the stuff that had landed themselves in such a mess?Fofi, you mention about children’s yoghurts; all that is is marketing. There is nothing in the yoghurt meant for children and not adults, other than the pretty pictures on the side of the carton. Children will do as well as us to eat full fat yoghurt (from a boring carton).
The diet doctor website does have some suggestions for making children’s diet low carb and I think there are guidelines around amounts (of course their bodies are growing whereas our bodies are only growing out). There are also some very good recipes on there for low carb breads and tasty snacks for lunch boxes, etc. One of the breads is called Oopsi bread.
As I said, I worry that I am on shaky ground here, not being a parent, but surely it makes sense to start the next generation off early in terms of looking at food differently. I know the post above is looking for low sugar versions of biscuits and ice cream and stuff but as Fofi says, they aren’t really out there. I suspect that is because there are not many naturally sweet things that have any real benefits to humans or at least don’t harm us. For our kids’ sake, we need to educate them away from such sweet teeth in the same way we are doing that for ourselves.

Hi,
This is the last week of the 8 week plan for me and I now have a lots of decisions to be made before next week starts.
My starting BMI was 33 and my main target was to get it under 30 in 8 weeks, so I was no longer classified as obese. My blood sugars were getting close to prediabetic, and I wanted them to reduce. I reached the blood sugar drop within 3 weeks to low 5’s and the BMI to 29.9 10 days ago. Today it was 29. Next major goal is BMI under 25. I was about to say that means I have another 20kg to go – and checked my spreadsheet – I have 12kg to go – I need to get used to the idea that I am no longer over 20kg overweight :-).
I have 2 options – go straight onto the 5:2, which was the plan. I had assumed this would be much more of a struggle that it has been and I would be ready to move by now. Second option is to continue the 800 until my holiday in the first week in May – Orkney, full bed and board, so it will be interesting to see how I manage through that. I had not thought it was advisable to do more that 8 weeks, but a few others seem to have been following that approach successfully so 3 weeks more should not be an issue.
I am walking the Shine Night Walk (Marathon) in London in September for Cancer Research UK. My sister-in-law died of cancer in January and I am doing it in her memory. This was an added driver to get the weight off! I did do the half marathon walk 2 years ago at my old weight off of 3 weeks training and did it in 4 hours continuous walking – I could not have taken a step more – so I knew I had to get this weight loss moving fast or I would fail and probably damage my knees in the process! Link below if anyone interested in joining up! http://www.cancerresearchuk.org/support-us/find-an-event/charity-walks/shine-night-walk
Training starts after my holiday – lots of long walks at the weekend and jogging at least twice a week. With that energy output, I think I will definitely need to be on the 5:2 by then.
Anyone else actually made the move from one to the other and how did it go? -
I like the pink grapefruit as they’re a bit sweeter – not sure if that means we shouldn’t have them though?

Look forward to seeing you on the other thread.

Hi Chezza and Madmre. I’m on day 3 too.
Madmare. Like you I have lots of clothes which don’t fit … yet!
Chezza, we don’t do Easter and for once I’m pleased about that. I’d find it hard to resist if there was lots of chocolate about. Avoiding it as much as possible sounds like a plan. Can you ask the family to keep it out of your sight?
Haven’t weighed myself yet. Think I will tomorrow.

“Can’t believe it’s this easy and nobody told me before”
This is the problem, no one is going to tell you because the food firms, the diet firms, and the drugs firms have all invested massively in high carb low fat meals which cause the disease and then it has to be fixed chemically
I’m afraid we live in a world where the £ is vastly more important than the lb -
My experience of it was the same but the diahorrea was awful as well.
Interestingly enough I had blood tests a couple of years ago from a locum nurse who forcefully insisted that I take the metformin within 20 mins either side of food !
But, they are slow release I stammered in surprise.
Still works better my way was the response.
It took me a while to realise she was talking rubbish.
