Oh my God – for those who remember my rant about my useless son. I had to have a talk with him today. It was building up inside me. I told him it wasn’t that he failed his year that I was so cross about, it was his complete apathy. The ‘I don’t know/I’ll do it later/I’ll check my email’ and I asked him if he’d feel any less frustrated if it were his child. He shook his head. So it emerges he’s passed three (I think) exams, but he failed both the maths ones. So I pointed out that if he was resitting, shouldn’t he be studying? August is but weeks away after all! He can’t study. Guess why? Go on, guess…
HE HASN’T GOT THE TEXTBOOKS. He hasn’t got… the bloody textbooks. Why? Because they were – and I quote – too expensive. Some were £60…
Yes, all you parents out there, no – scratch that, you don’t need to be a parent, just possess a modicum of common sense – my first sentiment was to ask ‘How much do you spend on a night out’. Which was met with a surly ‘I don’t know!’ Taking into account pre-going out drinks, and now pubs are open late, not like ‘when I were a lass’ and you were chucked out on your a**e by half 11. I then pointed out that – shock horror – that’s what his grant was actually for! Expensive textbooks! Not his bloody social life.
So, to cut an already long story short… guess who has just been landed a very large bill for 4 of the five (secondhand) textbooks from Amazon this morning? He could go and whistle for the fifth one, which was over £60 second hand! Guess who is NOT a happy ******* bunny. I haven’t wanted a drink during this diet, and now all I can think about is the two bottles of birthday Prosecco and Cava that have been chilling in my fridge since May. And how good it would feel hitting him over the head with one.
Fin.

on 14 Jul 2016 at 13:41 in Starting the BSDSo my first day didnt end well! So i have a new plan, i will go low carb following my usual high fat low carb plan, then when i am in the zone i will go low cal and follow the diet properly. Back in a few days!

Oh God, forgot they were cauliflower based… wonder if you could do a brussels sprouts one???
I wonder what it’s like toasted…
I need to stop wondering. I’m making the baps on Saturday to go with our burger.
-
I was thinking rather the farty smell of the bread rather than the resulting trouser trumpets.
-
No idea on cals.. I have transcended calorie counting now in week 10/11 or whatever I’m on! Plus the methane it will inevitably create will offset the cals!! Hee hee! Carrot or beetroot ones may be less offensive (although I believe there is still cauliflower involved).
The ‘fallout’ from it is to come, Timmy. Which is worrying as I have a customer meeting in a couple of hours!! 😮
-
Lucky you’ll be toasting before you know it 😉
-
That looks delicious Janey!! I’m totally making it next… who cares what it smells like :-))))
-
Yay! Glad it was edible! Maybe the orange one might be less offensive? How many cals a slice did it work out?
-
Yes but did the rest of your office look at you as if you’d floated an air biscuit? Cut the cheese? Did a bottom burp? Doing a one cheek sneak?
-
-
Update on the fart bread! I loaded the offending article up with humus, sliced tomato, a little shredded chicken and a few olives and you know what? It wasn’t half bad! The broccoli ‘twang’ was much diminished by the goodies on top and so it just tasted like bread base! So I will persevere with the remaining 5 pcs! 👍🏼

Autumn, the same thing happened to me when I cheated. My stomach is way smaller than it used to be. I feel the effects of alcohol, junk food and excess sodium almost immediately, which definitely has me weighing the cost of a cheat. I make sure it’s worth it. I’ve been at this since May. I’m losing on average 10 lbs a month even with cheating 2 times a month. The moral of the story is, don’t make cheats a habit and you’ll still make progress. I’ve got to try that cauliflower pizza crust 😮

Lucky – totally flippin’ marvellous, thank you

Hi Peterking, not sure if anyone has answered you as there are one or 2 nurse types on, just like me – ex-nurse, long time ago. The word you need is ketones. It is when the body starts to find its energy from muscle fibre, basically eating itself. Now you have the right word you can google it or look it up on any diabetic site. In severe cases you get ketoacidos, which is serious – look it up.
Quote from Diabetes for Dummies = If you go on a strict diet your body burns some of its fat storage and produces ketones in much the same way it burns fat when you lack insulin……. then comes the science bit, ….. Conclusion. A strict diet can produce ketones and these can be released into your urine (you can buy test strips) but this is not the same as the condition which results in ketoacidosis.
You see, even nurses get confused, and get in a panic when they don’t really know what they are talking about. One is a serious condition the other is the natural process of losing weight. By the way, if you have ever wondered where fat goes, when you diet it is broken down into smaller molecules and is expelled in your urine, which is why a good diet make you pee more.

Jill, I can’t think in kilos either, this is purely for the psychological aspect of it 😀 Especially now that (I suspect!) weight loss is going to be slowing down to 1 or 2 lbs a week – still not to be sniffed at – but after such big losses in the first month, it’s going to be a bit disheartening. So, I’m going to switch off and just concentrate on the scale going down (hopefully!) in small increments. As long as it goes down, that’s all that matters. A quick google search can convert the amounts in seconds anyway, if I really need to know 😉
Absolutely you can do it! I don’t think I would have stuck to it without this forum, this thread has kept me sane, talked me down, geed me on and given me some of the best giggles I have had in ages! This thread is generally open between 5 am (apart from today grrrrrrrrr) and 11 pm 😉 You too can join us in a pot of hurrah, and tut at wilted kale. Squint drunkenly at Timmy in his speedos. Just remember to keep your chickpeas chunky, and leave your sanity at the door 😉

Lucy – all fantastically helpful and encouraging thanks so much. Started at 12st 13lbs (sorry just can’t think in kilos even though I hear what you say about better loss tracking) and hope to get rid of a stone in the 4 weeks I plan to do it – then do another 4 weeks in a month or so (not eating differently in between but not calorie counting). I would like to get to 10 stone, that is my goal – but with such great support here I am sure it can be done, so thanks to you and all the lovely people who take time out of their day to support us. I really do think it is the greatest thing about this diet and why it works – they should market you as part of it!
-
Linda that is really helpful thanks so much – week 13! I take my hat off to the long termers. I had to clear a frantic work diary that takes me travelling at least 3 times a week so I could retrieve 4 weeks at home to focus on this – plan to do another 4 weeks in a month or so 🙂 It’s v hard when your job takes you all over, no mater how good you try to be 🙁 And actually, the recipes don’t travel well!

Thanks to you all – you are true gurus!

Yayyyyyyy Tokyo!! Well done! I forgot to say too, I managed to zip left boot up apart from the last two inches or so!!!!

Day 5 and back on track. Yesterday emotionally was fine, a couple of sad thoughts but a good day really. Did not keep to it, knew I wouldn’t. a latte coffee and half a slice of millionaires shortbread, friend bought and wanted to share. Lunch late was ploughmans with cheese, ham and hock. Had 2 slices of home made bread, some butter and a little pickle. For drink I had sparkling water with a slice of lemon and another coffee. Then indulged in a large slice of coffee and walnut cake yummy. Had yoghurt with fresh blueberries last night. Oh forgot had some tesco make jelly babies third of a pack.
Today have had two coffees with a bit of milk and yoghurt with fresh blueberries. Have been to pre diabetic clinic where was weighed but not too bad, blood pressure all right. She was pleased I was taking it seriously and said to carry on. Had a thought spiralising courgettes and carrots should be ok I hope. So having veg soup for lunch and will try courgette spaghetti with a tomato and pepper mixture to top. Hope that will be good. Thanks everyone Mary -
Bloody hell! Do you all wait until I’m not here to interact? Pfffffffffffft.
So, Timmy, basically you were posing in the changing rooms, correct? 😉 Haha, I had the same reaction re the almond flour, he nearly cried handing over his debit card, and ours wasn’t so bad as we had buy one get one half price (I was in every day that week taking advantage of that offer, I tell you!).
Hi Jill, welcome. Come in, come in… Everyone is doing this plan differently to what works for them. I’ve not counted one carb daily, but I do look at carb counts. I’m just following the plan according to what I’m allowed to eat, and the amount of calories I can eat in a day. It’s working – for me – so far. When it stops working, well, then I’ll have to start looking at the amount of carbs. I’ve so much weight to lose anyway, that it’s going to take time. If I was nearer goal? Then the carb count would probably bother me. But I’m nowhere near.
I lost 14lb in my first week, 4 in my second, 3 in my third and 4 in my fourth. One off this week so far. I weigh again on Saturday at the end week 5/start of week 6. Everyone is different though and it will depend on many factors, including how big you were to start off with too. Personally, I am different to the other ladies, I weigh daily. I haven’t always but I have for the last two eating plans I have been on. It keeps me on track too. So if it’s right for you, don’t worry about it. One thing you might want to consider (what I’m doing on Saturday) is changing your scales to kilos. You’ll see the weight come down in smaller increments but as I said before, I could have three days at a certain weight and my scale won’t show a change until I’ve lost the whole pound. I could be 15 11 and three quarters, 15 11 and a half and 15 11 and a quarter on those three days, losing half a pound, but my scales won’t show me that. If that makes sense!
Janey, how was fart bread sandwich????? We must know!!!

and today ladies (and gentleman!) cinderella moment is brought to you by my gardening jeans !! four weeks ago i jumped and laid down anything to squeeze into them and took many attemprs to zip them up today in with a wiggle zip up once success overload !!!

Hi Jillf,
I’m now in week 13 and have lost 19.8kg and have just hit a ‘normal’ BMI after starting off ‘obese’. Still 5.1kg to lose till my goal weight of 65kg, not that I’m counting. Much! Heck, who am I kidding! I count everything!I’ve kept track of everything I’ve eaten in my EasyDietDiary app and on looking back, I’ve logged somewhere between 40-70g per day of both total fats (as opposed to just saturated) and protein. On rare days I went either a bit over or under, but generally between 40 & 70g.
My biggest weight loss in a week was 4.6kg and the lowest was 0.4kg, but on most weeks, seems to be around 1.5kg per week.
I hope this helps, any questions, just ask, we are all here to help.😀
Cheers

LMAO at least you wear shorts Timmy!! Not a word, Lucky 😉

Hey Switzerland, someone posted a link to a gram flour pizza base recipe which you might want to take a look at too.

Glad you finally know what is up, I hope you manage to get it remedied. I’m a huge fan of food first therapy now.
Like you, I think I flukilly heard that radio 2 snipped! Otherwise I’d still be miserable and contemplating buying a new suit because I was too fat for my current ones. Now I’m almost out of those suits the other way!
Good luck to you

Hi Autumn,
We have Friday night pizza almost every week. It’s home made. This takes a bit of effort but since April I make a cauliflower pizza (see recipe section) so that I can ‘have my pizza and eat it too’.
I think that it’s the carbs that cause the lightheadedness, tiredness and irritability.
I agree with you that family get togethers are really important and an integral part of our lives. I’m sure you’ll work out something that will suit you. -
1) Ate the nicest meal I think I’ve ever had last night
2) Just had confirmation of the biggest contract ever for one of my businesses (3 times the size the current largest!)
3) Less than 4 weeks to holiday and I’m way ahead of target to be at my perfect weight. -
1. A special call out to all of the supportive felines around the world that assist us while on our BSD journey….very good at grounding us and helping us with mindfulness meditation.
2. I am so grateful for today’s sunshine.
3. Weekly shop completed in half the time thanks to 2 family members helping. -
Hi all,
I’ve not been on here for a while – any comments to my post are gratefully received but I just wanted to share with you my recent experience.
So diagnosed with T2 after 1st child birth 5 years ago – had second child 2 years ago – after loosing 4stone on my own then doing to 800 cal diet, loosing half a stone but now also maintaining this (I now naturally eat about 900/1,000 calories thanks to the diet) and i’m about half a stone off my ideal weight, my BS’s are still high (morning one can be 12, if eat nothing and exercise i can get it to 6!)
So someone (Bill i think it was you) suggested a c-peptide test, paid for that, showed me to have 23mmol insulin which i gather is pretty low. Took it to my doctor, she didn’t have a clue – hospital team rolled their eyes at me when I said I was on this diet. Decided to not be beaten!
Researched and went to see a Functional Practitioner – they are medically trained and often ex NHS consultants or GPs, but they look at your nutrition and lifestyle too, i sat with her for 2 hours and received a report which confirmed what I thought is that I have an auto immune disease (probably developed around university) and now pre type 1 diabetes triggered by having my kids and insulin resistant. Yes it costs money but it’s worth it. She asked me when I suggested this to the diabetic clinic and my GP why they didn’t take me seriously? Because they said, I hasn’t passed out due to lack of insulin, therefore i couldn’t possibly be T1. She was horrified.
So there is a long way to go, I need to have a food intolerance test and perform an exclusion diet (not looking forward to it being a veggie!) as well as a full vitamin test so we can see how we can turn my immune system back on again through a food first approach.
BUT there are things that I should have been tested for by the GP which I’m trying to not get angry about (OK I did, but lets move on!) such as an anti-bodies test, ceoliac and thyroid tests – PLUS I’ve taken myself off the combined pill – to me this is low hanging fruit which could have helped me manage my diabetes earlier – however, it’s done now and I’m seeing i as part of my journey i just wanted to share this with you incase it inspires anyone else to make sure they know what medication they are taking or (and i know alot of people can’t) if you can afford to see a Functional Practitioner I would recommend it!
Lastly, if i hadn’t have over heard a snippet of radio 2 interview with Dr Michael Mosley, I wouldn’t have found this diet when i did and be in the position i am now – so thank you.
Have a great day
Charlie

Haha. No they don’t look great yet Janey, but better than they did. More of a cupcake top than a muffin top now! I just have a very high “don’t give a toss what other people think” threshold and know that swimming shorts/board shorts are no good for fast swimming!

Hi Jillf, welcome onboard this slightly crazy train of conversation! To reiterate what Tokyo says above, don’t weigh daily or you’ll just stress yourself. Go with how you feel and how your clothes fit. And on week 2 you’re doing well anyway.. one more week and the liver and pancreas are cleared of carbs and your waist will really shrink! I have never counted carbs as such, just gone with eliminating the really obvious ones (spuds, rice, pasta, bread, cakes, sweets) totally. There’s not much left after that!
Timmy.. woo hoo on the trunks (I also checked them out!). If you’re wearing them you must be looking good already 😀
Almond flour is very expensive (although better value on http://www.realfoodstore.co.uk for a lot of the bank breaking healthy alternatives) so I am experimenting with combining or replacing it with our old friend gram (chickpea) flour or coconut flour (which is a lot cheaper). Apparently with gram flour you should add a little oil to offset its dryness compared to the almond stuff.Don’t remind me about the fart bread.. I’m dreading lunch 🙁
-
i am many things but not sure cool and calm is one of them !!!
i wanted to be on the scales all the time at the start but thanks to two lovely crazy ladies( thelma and louise!) i decided against it ! just go with it for a week/3 days hide the scales( lifes too short) and so how it goes eat less do more follow the diet you have to loose weight its the law ! ( i think ha ha)
i weigh in kg and it all depends how much you have to loose ( some have more than others and will loose more weekly than others ) and how good you are sticking to diet i guess but i am no expert just cracking on and hoping for the best not been disappointed yet -
Ahhh you are that cool calm person Tokyo! I wish I could stop weighing daily – have done it all my life and it is a millstone 🙁 Fear of losing control of my weight I fear – even over 24 hours – which I know is mad but there it is (even though, before this diet, all I did was gradually get fatter!). I will try my very best to take your good advice and thanks for the post. Further question – so after week one was around 2-3 lbs a week the norm?
Jill -
hi i dont weigh every day once acweek and maybe a cheeky weigh middle if week but my opinion is dont worry about the scales ifvyou csn just go with it
no idea about protein or fat i just follow the diet rules and keep going and that works for me sure someone else csn be a bit more in depth but i dont want to get too obsessed with it i just keep doing what i am doing and cheering loudly when it works -
On Wednesdays, our family gets together for pizza night. I had already decided that I was going to use this day as my “cheat day” since for me, missing out on spending that time together seemed unrealistic. Also, if this is to become a lifestyle change, and not just a diet, then I need to be flexible (in a totally rigid way, 😛 ). So yesterday was my first test and one really interesting consequence, that I hadn’t even considered, was the fact that my stomach shrunk! So, after 1 slice of pizza, some fruit, and a beer, I was SO FULL! Normally, I can down at least 3-4 slices, fruit, coffee, beer, and whatever other snacks might be put out. So this was a real pleasant surprise for me.
However, today, I am noticing that the lightheadedness, tiredness, and irritability, that I felt during my first few days has returned. I was diagnosed with pre diabetes, so for me at least, it’s not just about the calories. I can feel the difference today. So, I’m torn. It was great that I still lost weight this morning on the scale, and it’s great that I was physically unable to eat as much as I did before, but the jury is still out on whether or not this is something that won’t actually hurt me in the long run. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
-
As a newbie on week 2 can I ask a couple of questions of you seasoned dieters please?
First – after the great loss of 6lbs or more in the first week I am loosing around half a pound a day now – was that your experience?
My other question was – I know I am keeping to under 50g of carbs but is there a ‘recommended’ level of fat and protein?
Thanks so much for your advice – you keep me going in the dark moments!
Jill -
i mase the worlds most chocolatey chocolate cookies with chickpea flour ! you couldnt taste it but at the minute i try to put chickpea flour in anything !!
oh yes i am the chickpea queen !!! -
Has anyone found a decent alternative to almond flour for making those cookie things? My missus nearly keeled over when I told her how much it cost (£10 from H&B). Given that one packet only makes three batches, and the cost of coconut oil, I think it costs about 50p per cookie!
I agree. Fart bread doesn’t sound the best
-
yes i admit timmy i looked at your speedos !!!! very daniel craig getting out of the sea !!!!!!
any meal that starts with holy s😀😀😀 balls has got to be a winner in my book , unfortunately i fear that is not a description for janeys farty bread !!! -

Not yet, but I’m definitely changing shape. When I got out of the pool last night I did have a look in the mirror (well you have to don’t you). Because my shoulder/arm/chest muscles were pumped with blood, and if you squinted and were slightly drunk you could possibly have possibly mistaken me for someone in shape/muscley.
And yes, I was wearing speedos! These sort though…. http://www.speedostore.co.uk/mens-speedo-fit-splice-aquashort/810372A569.html

Started using Headspace on Monday (other apps are available). Nearly dozed off during the first two sessions, yesterdays session seemed to grab my attention a bit more.

Timmy’s tummy is receding fast – those budgie smugglers will be on in no time!!!
Btw Timmy, I followed your suggestion and cooked a couple of our Lucky wraps to have with my BBQ sausages last night… DEE LISH! I am still happy to eat a ‘naked’ burger but a lonely sausage on a plate is not right (or maybe that whole sentence is wrong??!!) Insomnia for me overnight.. grrrrr. Still awake at 4 am so this morning was a mad panic, not helped by my ‘gardener’ turning up just as I was trying to hang washing, pack child off to school, make lunch, put guinea pigs out to pasture!!! When I say gardener, I mean my son’s granddad who I have cajoled into sorting my garden out for me as he has just been made redundant!!
The broccolli flatbread is sitting fartily in the office fridge waiting for its lunchtime debut. I feel a bit sick at the thought of it if I’m honest, but I will load it with either humus or cottage cheese and a big slice of beef tomato and see how I get on…
Well done on the continued weight loss Tokyo.. you’ll be super slim Brenda in no time!

Hello Timmy, I’ll share your excitement! Didn’t want to step on the scales this morning, as I overate last night, but I probably didn’t exceed my carbs so I shouldn’t have been afraid! Lost 2lbs since Tuesday (nearly a kilo for those doing metric!). Now lost a total of 1st 8 and a half pounds.
My eight weeks is up on Monday. I only have to lose 6 and a half pounds to target. I didn’t have as much to lose as some. My mum will carry on with 800 – I will go for the 5:2 :):)
