  • Ruby, your avocado is my Brazil nuts, and also my avocado, I can’t bear it either 😂

Harissa is lovely, I use a rose harissa paste and a little goes a long way but makes SUCH a difference flavour wise, I often use it to roast vegetables or coat halloumi or chicken for a bit of punch!

I’m powering through, I haven’t caved yet to something carby even though my brain feels like it wants to climb out through my eyeballs!! I’ve changed my plan for dinner tonight to now be chicken in a mushroom and mustard sauce, was just going to do spicy chicken but the sauce is highly seasoned so I’m hoping that helps with the electrolyte balance thing!!

  • Ruby, its a shame I cant do emojis or I would be laughing right now. I dont like avocado but force myself to buy one about every 2 or 3 weeks. It usually sits in the fruit bowl until it goes brown inside and end up in the bin. My heart healthy choice would also be nuts but I would eat too many so keep my hand out of the bag. 🙂

Psyllium husk and chia are my fibre go to’s. I seem to remember using inulin in the early days of BSD, which can be mixed into drinks of food to increase fibre intake …. might be worth a look.

Re. avocado, it wasn’t a pop at your choice for any other reason than – I just don’t like it – there are not many foods I don’t like, but avocado is top of the list. I either can’t taste it (so don’t see the point of eating it), or it tastes like “green”. I know it’s good for you in so many ways, but I would be more willing to drink a tablespoon of olive oil than eat a tablespoon of avocado.
I grew up in ZA, and we had avocado trees so have always had access to them but never liked them, and my tastes haven’t changed with age.
I guess my avocado is Lauren’s Brazil nuts 🙂

Loving the energy and enthusiasm on the thread … so good to read all the posts full of ideas and encouragement.
Going to look into the Al Fez Harrisa, Ruby … sounds very much like my sort of thing.
Stick with it Lauren, I’m sure you’ll get through the carb ‘flu soon.
S-G, a 14hr overnight fast counts …. anything over 12hrs is good. Like the sound of your breakfast.
I had a pretty good day yesterday and doing okay so far today too. Despite good overnight fasts of 16hrs, still no real hunger which I’m finding a tad annoying ….. maybe tomorrow.

  • Hi Ruby, not sure if you have the wrong idea about avocado. I only ever have half of one, it was within my calories and is heart and cholesterol friendly. I dont have it often because I dont really like it but it is part of several of MMs recipes. Maybe you are worried it is too calorie dense.

S-G – 14 hours fast is still pretty good, and apart from the avocado, the menu sounds great.

Yesterday someone on here posted about ratatouille, so I made a big batch last night, which we had with some leftover roast lamb for supper, then a portion with a poached egg for breakfast today (and tomorrow). For those that like a bit of heat to their food, Al Fez Harissa paste is wonderful – yes it has 14.7g sugar per 100g, but I use a teaspoon in a batch of ratatouille and it has a lovely smoky warmth.

Lauren, best wishes in finding the strength to push through the carb flu.

Almost made it through the day with no between meal snacking (both of us), but I have realised my water intake has been woeful (unless you count 5 cups of black coffee!).

  • Afternoon all, lovely to hear all your messages xx

I’m now on day three, sticking resolutely to plan and have been under 50g carbs and 800 cal, like Verano I struggle to also keep protein down and fibre up but I’m doing my best, scales say 3.5lb down since Monday morning but I know that’s mostly water but at least it’s a start!!

Carb flu has unfortunately hit me like a truck today though so feeling pigging awful!! Determined to push through though!

  • Hi everyone, so glad to be back on plan. Had my last mouthful at 8pm and breakfast this morning at 10am because I was actually hungry – so not quite TRE but still 14 hours so not bad.

Breakfast yesterday was poached egg with grilled mushrooms, halloumi and bacon salad with half an avocado then instead of items on menu (pork chops in mustard sauce) I gave hubby a night off with a preprepared beef stew from the freezer. Still all came in at around 750 cals.

Not going to mention any weight loss as it is not important on a day to day basis as it can be up then down etc. I will report either on the last day of this week or on the next thread.

Have a good week everyone – enjoy this journey.

  • @ybr – just in answer to your yoghurt question. I made a similar mistake the Full Fat Greek and Natural yoghurt isn’t always situated right by all the sugary half fat ski and muller corner type things in the supermarket.

It’s usually closer to the dairy / cheese where there will be bigger (500g or 1kg) tubs. All the usual supermarkets (ASDA, TESCO, LIDL, ALDI etc etc etc) will have there own brand Greek style yoghurt. Beware there will be reduced fat in similar tubs right by the full fat stuff.
I’m a sucker for the Lidl premium and Asda Extra special Greek Yoghurt. It’s extra thick and creamy. Nom.

@reuby19 at the risk of hijacking RubyG’s thread but in answer to your question. Since starting this WoE I have taken an Iron supplement on various recommendations (on the FB group IIRC). I take Spatone (it’s liquid form) and mix in juice of half lemon / lime as Vit C aids with Iron uptake. I also take a general Vit (Wellman or Centrum or similar) supplement.

Morning all. Just a quick check in as life seems to have suddenly become very busy again 🙀

First and foremost well done on your great initial loss Jax61 – that’s such a motivator! Long may it continue.

Arcticfox you sound busy! Where exactly do you live? (I know there’s a clue in the name! Just interested to find out more 😀) Stay safe.

Cathy I’m glad your weight gain was less than you’d hoped. Bodes well for the rest of this journey. You were asking about daily meals, and mine yesterday were smoked salmon & boiled egg for breakfast, turmeric noodle soup for lunch, and baked cod with roast veg for evening meal. All very nice, though I had dinner earlier than usual as I was really hungry and didn’t want to succumb to snacks!

Dawn like you I am taking time to plan for success. My new MM book arrived a couple of days ago so I’m going through the recipes to try some out over the next few days. The soup maker arrived last night so today’s lunch will be the Roasted Mushroom and Garlic Soup from the BSD Recipes section.

Jennie yes please do hop on the million steps challenge. I started the same challenge on another forum back in September but didn’t make it. So I’m determined to do my own challenge on this Easter Journey. Ironically I did lots of steps on Monday – the day before I started – but not so many yesterday. So just need to get into a regular groove! It’ll be lovely to have your company en route!

Hope everyone sees some progress the rest of the week X

    Good morning everyone,
I love this weather – when it’s cold but bright.
Day 5 of BSD (take 3) today for, already feeling so much better. A little bit of a carb flu headache, but I know they pass.
I have porridge with cinnamon pear for breakfast and I can’t flippin wait to eat it!
Out of interest – does anyone take any vitamins/supplements? I’m usually a bit hit or miss with them so just wondered…
    Have a fab day all!

Pressed the button today for a refund on my lost order, and have re-ordered MM’s new book – hopefully it arrives in the next couple of days.
No proper tracking yesterday, but at least I did start recording the weights of supper’s ingredients, and had a more moderate portion size for supper. By the end of today all leftovers are finished and MFP will be reinstated (it’s a pain to use, but I know I cannot guess-timate portions).
Cold and crisp and clear here this morning, have a good day everyone!

Back for the New Year and a fresh start:
    Weigh-in yesterday:
    Hubby 15st 11.2lb
    Me 12st 1.0lb (11st 13.6lb this morning)
In summary for nearly 3 weeks over Christmas, we didn’t track anything we ate but kept broadly to the low-carb principles (not low cal though – cheese…………..), with the addition of some alcohol and an occasional potato, one slice of toast and a few crackers with said cheese. We did go out for a meal, and both hubby and I ordered a side salad instead of chips, which has become the norm now when we eat out.
Yesterday was our first day back at work (WFH), so back in a routine.
Breakfast was scrambled egg with mushrooms, lunch was turkey soup and supper was some leftover lamb shoulder with ratatouille.
Breakfast today was poached egg and ratatouille, lunch will be the last of the turkey soup, and I’ll have to think of something for supper.
    Keeping on keeping on 🙂

Arcticfox …. Thank you so much! I’m so out of touch with the finer aspects of this WoE. I looked through my cupboards and found psyllium husks, ground linseed and whole chia seeds! All recommended by Esnecca! So now I just need to use them. I think I need to go back to the very beginning when I started low carbing. I used to eat three meals a day with breakfast normally being yogurt with berries, walnuts and linseed. Or maybe I’ll just make breakfast into brunch and stick with TRE.
Thanks for thestonesoup.com link it looks like a great website. I’m guessing that the ‘rice’ recipe is the egg fried cabbage recipe which looks lovely.
I feel a lot more in control now. I just needed pointing in the right direction so thanks again.

arcticfox – that’s some serious hard work there. Hope there wasn’t/isn’t too much more clearing after the second snowfall. That flower farm does sound exciting. What a great time of year for creating something new.
DCT – thanks for setting up the new thread – I really like the title too – brilliant. I also love your goal – to complete 1 million steps – so if it’s OK with you I’m going to pinch it and make it one of my goals too.
Do we still have the bus? – hope so as I’ve come on to book a seat! My son is still here on his Christmas visit. He goes back on Sunday and I’ll be here bright and early and eager to join in with everyone on Monday. Meanwhile I’ll think about my goals and start them steps!

    Hi Verano,
    A few ideas:
I remember Esnecca talking about oat fibre. Very low carb and high in fibre. Maybe look for some of her old posts to see how she was using it? I know she recommended it to me once, but it is very difficult to find here.
Flax (linseed) is almost all fibre, but does have some fat and protein as well. Unfortunately it is likely to get very expensive (if it hasn’t already – I haven’t bought any food grade flax in a while), due to the drought here (we are the world’s largest producer of it). The feed grade flax has already doubled in price. I have 1/2 of a 25kg bag left that I am feeding my horses, but will not be buying more once it is finished as I would go bankrupt in a hurry at current prices.
Cabbage – I bought a large cabbage a couple weeks ago and I am having to be creative at how to use it up. Coleslaw is nice, but I also used a recipe on thestonesoup.com and made a fried rice substitute that was quite delicious.
Squash seeds – I cooked up a sweet dumpling squash the other night and instead of throwing the seeds away, I toasted them with a bit of olive oil and salt. These seeds are not the hulled variety that you find in the supermarket. They still have the white hulls on. Much more fibre per seed than if it had been hulled.

V, well done on both the amaryllis and the food tracking … Great results!
Yowser, yes date nights will reappear, but for this Friday OH decided to book a table at the local pub and we’ll be at my folks next week, so I won’t be catering a date night until later in the month. I loving the lengthening days too …. wonderful!

So, let’s see what positives I can find for today …..
🎄 packed up Christmas to put back in the loft until next time. Really feel ready to get on with the new year ahead now.
🙂 felt much better today, after feeling very under par yesterday. Covid tests negative, so think it was probably just my body protesting about what I’ve been consuming recently.
🍲 simple meal this evening, of lean pork steak and veggies with a grain mustard sauce …. so over festive foods!

Hope your 2022 is off to a good start and will have a few positives to share with us.

Hi there, checking in on my first official day. My aim for this week is to mainly eat savoury things to try to get control over the sweet tooth I re-developed over the last couple of months. This morning I had some leftover broccoli quiche for breakfast. Had it at 10am as I woke up late and was scrambling to get the horses fed before starting work. Lunch was what I would normally have for breakfast which was greek yogurt with pomegranate, chia and my Vit D drops and lemon flavoured fish oil. Tastier than it sounds. Dinner will be the rest of the quiche. Drinking loads of tea to try to get rehydrated. I shovelled tons of snow yesterday morning as we got about 5cm overnight and I had to clear the drive and down through the property so that the farrier could get in to trim the horses’ feet. Snowing like crazy again now, so probably more clearing to be done this evening. I’m on my lunch break, so will spend the rest of that cleaning up after the horses and then starting the first of my flower seeds for the flower farm. So excited about this. It is -10 C out and snowing, but getting ready for the new farming year already!

    Hi.
Caron just noticed your post and pleased to hear you pain is receding. Your flowers sound wonderful but hopefully they won’t suffer as the weather changes …. ours changed today!
Sunny, I second that! Just how many Bank Holidays can we have? They seem to have been endless and I’m just glad to have a ‘normal’ day.
Positives are few and far between for me today … but I’ll scrape the bottom of the barrel to find a few …..
🪴🎋🎍The amaryllis has two open flowers now so really pleased about that especially as I just don’t have green fingers.
🥦🍅🥒 Just seem to have lost all my cookery skills. For some reason everything I’ve cooked over the last couple of weeks have just not been right for one reason or another. The positive … cooked salmon for tonight, not difficult , so no problem there!
⚖️🗒🖋 Weighed and logged all food for today … two days in a row and still going!
    Have a good evening.

I really need some help. I started eating low carb over five years ago but have never bothered with the macros. I read MM’s new book and thought I would give The Fast Keto a go, especially as it looks a little more flexible.
So day 1, yesterday, I weighed and logged all my food, the first time I’ve done that for a long time. Carbs and calories were fine, protein just within the upper limit of 60g but my fibre was only 5.7g.
Today I’ve tried to increase the fibre which I have done by eating 2 slices of Livlife low carb bread for lunch so that’s up to 14g, but still not high enough.
The real problem is protein. My protein for the day will be 78g, 18g over the upper limit. I know that we need to be flexible but I would love to hear how others keep their macros in check. I don’t have a problem with carbs or calories but really need help to increase my fibre intake and reduce protein without feeling hungry.
    All ideas gratefully accepted!

S-g glad you got to the UK but sorry it was a bit fraught. I’m guessing that any of us who travel for the first time will find life a bit more stressful than usual, but hopefully there was more gain than pain.
OK … s-g you give me far too much credit…. I’m really a fraud because the rest of me needs help!
I have managed to get my BS down and kept it in the normal range but that’s where it starts and finishes! You have done a million times better than me. I started with an HbA1c around 6.4 with metformin and it’s been around 5.4 without metformin for over 5 years. You on the other hand have done amazingly well. Ok so your BS may be a bit up the wall at the moment but you have had a much higher mountain to climb. Reducing insulin the way you have really is a great triumph. Insulin is so much more difficult to reduce and you’ve lost weight at the same time …. remarkable. You actually are the real success story.
Lauren thanks but I hate chia seeds but like sprouts are for other people! I think coconut milk might be a good idea though.
I do need some help with macros though so I’ll start a new thread rather than monopolise this one

Today has been a good start in many ways – no snacks for either of us (including hubby’s developing peanut butter habit – none for the past few days).
I am dying to read the new MM book, just to get some different ideas, but the online retail giant beginning with an A is being an A at the moment – book ordered 30th Dec for next day delivery (usually works well) – collected by courier 2nd Jan, no further updates apart from the ability to ask for a refund. I know what will happen – I’ll get a refund, buy another copy and then have the pain to return the original one when it does arrive, so I’m trying to be patient until the end of the week before giving in.
I too put on about 3lb. but I went into Christmas heavier than I’d like, so tipped the scales back into 12st 1.0lb this morning (last year this time I was 12st 10lb so I’ll take that as a win).
My aim is to get below 11st 7.0lb by Easter, perfectly do-able with some effort, and then review if getting below 11st is an option. My lowest ever adult weight was about 10st 7lb, but I didn’t maintain there for very long at all.
Hubby thought he had gained a stone, which was a wake-up call that complacency will undo all his efforts very quickly, but I think it was a change between scales and a bit of bloat, as he is also about 3lb up on his pre-Christmas weight (Jan 2021 he was at ~19st after his first 3st weight-loss).
If he had bothered to read the text messages from his GP before Christmas, he could have had really good results by having his bloods done pre-Christmas, but he only read the text once we were already away with family/friends – aaaargh!
    Anyhoo, let’s make 2022 a good year!

Well done freester. This way of eating really does become a way of life. Both sunshine-girl and myself are into our 6th year of eating this way. I don’t eat simple carbs but do get a bit bored with food now and again but I guess that happens no matter how you eat.
Happy anniversary and enjoy year 3!

  • Hi everyone, thank you Wendy for setting up a new weekly thread. Can I say that I follow the BSD800 (similar to Fast 800) which concentrates more on the benefits for diabetics. This diet really works in keeping blood sugar numbers right down and in some cases, putting diabetes into remission. Big shout out for Verano our resident success story.

How have I done. I am quite pleased to say that my Xmas, New Year gain is just under 3lbs. My weight is now just under 167 and I have set myself a goal to be under the 160 by my birthday first week in Feb. At least an 8lb loss. So not looking too far into the future and hopefully a realistic goal. Blood sugars are way out of control by my standards but not so bad that I am worried and will soon have them back under control.

Enjoy the new year with hope and enthusiasm and put the past behind us. Keep on keeping on…

    Hi All

2 days done and lost over 4lbs already yay!!! ……although I know it will be mostly water. I planned to go to the gym this morning and then shop for some of the keto recipes in MMs new book. All went to pot as I locked myself out of my house. I have a friend in my village who has a spare key but she was at work so, ended up doing a 7 mile hilly walk to get her house key so I could get mine. I have to say I feel exhausted, but I guess as I’m in my first few days my energy levels will be low. I generally keep pretty active so wasn’t expecting to feel so drained. I need to keep moving in my house now I’m home as I try not to use the heating in the day (it’s sooo expensive now) I may make an exception today and put it on so I can take it easy for a bit.I envy you ladies from Oz, hot and sticky sounds just fine.
I’m sticking to 2 meals a day within an 8 hour window. I’m not normally hungry in the morning so lunch and dinner works well. I did have a lump of cheese when I got home today as I thought I should get some protein and fat into me after my walk. I too found the more structured approach to carbs and protein useful in MMs new book.
Sounds like you are all feeling inspired, I know I physically feel so much better when I eat low carb which begs the question ‘why do I let myself do the opposite, when it makes me feel so awful?’
    Just have to keep trying!

Wonderful to see so many of us determined to make a fresh start for 2022. Thank you for keeping a weekly thread going g Wendy.
I too have taken my eye off the ball for awhile now … 3mths this time actually! So it was a pleasant surprise this morning, to find the scales read only 5lb above target.
However, my system has been telling me for days now, that it’s had enough of over indulgence and needs to get back to a proper eating plan with real food and no more carbage.
My proposed approach is to make a gentle start this week … well in reality, for two weeks, as I have a birthday next week. After that I’ll look at full tracking again.
Wishing everyone a great 2022, full of all you wish for yourselves, including BSD success and much more.

Hi all. Good to read your posts. Verano, I shall try with FatSecret. I just lack the patience to start again with favourite lists etc. But it is worth the time investment.
Yesterday went pretty well: yoghurt, berries, nuts: avocado and salad for lunch: ham and ratatouille for supper. Probably a bit high on calories given nuts and avocado. FatSecret here I come.
I do love making ratatouille – a simple tray bake in the oven of a mix of chopped peppers, courgette, aubergine, garlic and a tin of tomatoes with olive oil, bay leaves and other herbs to hand. Roast for about 45 mins to an hour. I have just had some cold for lunch today, and the rest will be whizzed and heated for a thick soup. Yum!

Quick check-in, back to the work (WFH still) routine.
Hubby and I both found a few lbs over the 3-week Christmas/New Year break, but not a lot of off-plan eating (drinking is another story over the past few weeks though), although we did probably eat our body weight in cheese!
Like many on here, I have not weighed and tracked for a while now, and I know that portion sizes have crept up to more than 800cals.
I still have a few leftovers (including some turkey soup) which I need to get rid of, and then tracking will start again.
Hubby has his blood tests due at the end of the month, so that’s a good incentive for a focused few weeks.

Well just checking in on my 2nd Anniversary 🙂

Not a lot to report, this WoE works well for me I’ve been maintaining at the same weight for the last year – +/- a few lbs.

I negotiated another Xmas successfully with the added perils of a couple of birthdays as well! A potato, parsnip and Yorkshire Pud for Xmas dinner that really was the only ‘off plan’ eating in the last year.

I feel completely in control. For me it works if I stay away from most carbs. I have the VERY occasional half slice of sour dough or Rye and Spelt (from the BSD recipe book), and I occasionally have Steel Cut Oat Porridge and make my own Oat Cakes from Steel Cut oats. I have the odd drink, which can be cider, lager or white wine, as well as red. Weekends only although I felt my drinking was going up slightly so reset and took part in Sober October which turned into a 6 week abstinence.

This is not meant to be a ‘look at me’ post or thread just meant as encouragement. As I said last year… If I can do it, anyone can…

Hello Everyone- old friends and new.

Good luck to those who are starting today. I think the 100 day journey is a really inspired title and has given so many of us the enthusiasm to make a difference in the next 100 days. Thank you DCT for this inspired title for our journey together. I am so happy to see how many people are joining in and feeling positive and inspired..

I weighed in at 150 lb so have put on 3lb since Christmas Eve. I expected it to be 7lb so am happy I have commenced early in January as that number would definitely be going up and up if i hadn’t got going. I completed day one yesterday and am just having a coffee before heading off to the supermarket to buy veg/salad/protein. As a vegetarian I find it difficult to be flexible with protein but eggs/cottage cheese/nuts are ideal for lunches. I am going to be making more soups, broccoli and Stilton, kale and bean soup, mushroom. I will be incorporating time restricted eating, fasting and a combination of all Michaels weight loss tips. I have been inspired by the latest keto book particularly about upping my protein to 50 g and it seems a more structured way to lose weight with time scales etc. When I embarked on the BSD in 2017 I was very naive and didn’t really know what I was doing, I just cut out all carbs!

I did weigh myself to get started after Christmas but my official weigh day will be on a Friday. I hope by Friday I will be 148 lb so hoping for an initial 2lb loss this week which hopefully is doable. I always find the first three days the most difficult but I am lucky to get into ketosis fairly quickly these days (after years of practice). Once burning fat my hunger goes and I find it so much easier.

I find it really interesting to read what people eat for their meals so please keep posting and sharing any tips. Lunch for me today will be egg and cottage cheese salad. Evening meal will be cauliflower cheese and two quorn sausages. I will have some a Greek Yoghurt and raspberries. I love to heat the raspberries in the microwave and I love the hot and cold mixture!

Have a great day everyone. 99 days to go for me! My goal is to reach goal once and for all!

  • I might be talking garbage V but I think coconut is high in fibre too, and chia seeds – whilst not low calories, chia seeds are packed with fibre and are filling – I had 2 tablespoons in 120ml alpro coconut milk for lunch yesterday and that was 11g fibre and 144 cal – I supplemented with a bit of cheese and nuts but it was quite filling on its own x

Thanks Lauren the balsamic sprouts sound lovely. As it happens I also love sprouts! But you made me think. I make soups often and I have in the past added sprouts to broccoli soup so that might be a way to up my fibre.
I just planned my day and realised it was low in fibre again. I swapped out one egg , no fibre, for lunch and added in a slice of low carb bread at 4g fibre. The calories are similar but there’s 3.4g of carbs in the bread but I think that’s probably a small price to pay for fibre. Looks like I’m on another learning curve!

  • Verano if you don’t like sprouts the traditional way they are lovely roasted in a bit of balsamic vinegar – just par boil them for three or four mins, and then toss in some balsamic and roast for about half an hour – they go nutty and crispy and taste completely different to just boiled (although I love sprouts any way!!). They are also good as a “salad leave” shaved raw or as a coleslaw ingredient instead of or as well as cabbage xx

Hi. I know it really is amazing how easily we can fool ourselves into thinking we are eating well, staying within the guidelines, only to be completely devastated when we start weighing again and find that portion size etc is way, way off.
At least we know where we’re going wrong and can get back on track !

    Hi Verano.

I was pretty shocked weighing out breakfast this morning and realising how far I had crept off any hope of plan (not that I wasn’t weighing it, but with brekkie and coffee my usual was ending up at 350-400 cals so in order to achieve 800 over the day I’ve had to cut that right back this morning!!)…

So, I’ve been working my way through re-reading the fast 800 and have been reminded of why intermittent fasting is so healthy….so today I aim for 800 cals (not truthfully been near it for a while….although have spent quite a lot of time doing MM low carb med-style with sometimes lowish cals interspersed with many Summer hols and Christmassy hiccups 🙄😆)….

I really need this- all encouragement welcome

Tuesday is my traditional weigh-in day so I’m coming along with you all on the weekly thread this year. I need to address so many issues … not drinking enough water, eating too little fibre … to name just two. So I think I might use this thread as a weekly personal challenge as well.
Yesterday was my first day of weighing, measuring and logging all my food. I was shocked. I only had 5.7g of fibre when I should be having 21g. So the challenge for me this week is to increase my fibre so it looks like I’m going to have to make ‘friends’ with avocados, raspberries and Brussel sprouts! Any other ideas for high fibre lowish carb/cal food would be much appreciated.
Wendy, how have you found the new book?
There seems to be more of an air of optimism and enthusiasm for 2022 so let’s see if we can keep that upbeat feeling going, week by week, for as long as possible.
