    Hi

Well I’ve lost my 1.2lbs, which I know is no great shakes, but it does get me down into the next stone so really pleased about that! I’m also now half way to my ultimate goal!

My next goal will again be quite modest just 3lbs by the end of February.

Hope you are all reaching your goals.

Still striving for that mini-goal of 8st 9lb. Managed to get below the 9st mark, but wavering between 8st 13.8lb and 8st 12.8lb. Need to have a concerted push this week, to try to get down to at least the 8st 12lb mark. I still have a few weeks in hand, before our next trip to Turkey, but I’d really like to get to my 8st 9lb goal in comfortable time before then, so that I have a chance to push it a little lower if I can.

How is everyone else doing on the mini-goal front?

    Hi SunnyB I’m still here!!

Sounds like you don’t have too far to get to your goal before you go away. I know how difficult it is. Ten days ago I set myself a goal of 3lbs off by the end of February. l have almost made it just need to lose 0.2lb by next Wednesday but it’s been sooooo slow.

When the new challenge started last Tuesday I decided to increase my calories to 900 and my carbs to 40g but not over 50g and now I’m thinking maybe I am being too generous with the carbs. I have averaged around 43g a day, that’s with two crumpets a few days ago!! Maybe I need to get back to between 30 and 40.

We just need to keep on keeping on!

    Hey Verano
I’m still plugging away. This morning’s weight was 8st 12.8lb – not great – but my official weekly weigh-in is tomorrow, so I’m hoping with a good day today, I might be able to record something a little more favourable. Have to say that when I started back after the festive season, things seemed to move quite well, but has almost stalled over the last two weeks.
Still striving for the 800, although I am averaging slightly more at the moment at around the 830 mark. Carbs seem to have crept up to almost 30g, where I had previously held it to closer to the 20g mark. Think I might need to review and I’m also conscious that I’ve let the hydration slip a little, so need to take that in hand again.
You’re right though, just need to keep the focus and keep right on with it to achieve the goals. Good luck!

1a. Be happy with under 900 cals; 60gms or under of carbs
1b. Be sure the cals & carbs are BSD friendly
    2. Be meticulous about fluid intake
    3. Get back to regular gym and walking. I know I feel so much better when I do but have been rather here or there lately
    4. Firstly back to 63kg; then 4x1kg

The above goals have been stated and re-stated several times now, most recently on Jan 7th.
    #1a,b. Pretty much a fail.
#2, fluid intake, good some days, terrible on others. Needs more focus.
#3 some progress here, as I am back at the gym twice a week, would prefer 3 times but have had specialist appointments for OH. I could change the days I go, or the time of day, but I don’t enjoy afternoon exercise and if I don’t get it done first thing, then it doesn’t happen. On the in-between days, my 45-60 minute walks are happening again. Had an appointment with the gym’s resident exercise physiologist this morning, boosted my programme, feeling it tonight, will definitely need my walk tomorrow. Early, as forecast is for 36c.
#4 Rather disheartening as I’m only at 62.7kg this morning, having been back up into the 63s in the previous week. Been circling around the same kgs for weeks now.

So, some re-working of the mini-goals:
#1a Under 900cals; work for 50carbs. Will mean reducing the amount of the beautiful summer fruit I indulge in
#1b Re-focus on BSD friendly foods
#2 Be meticulous about fluid intake
#3 Continue the regular walking, increase gym from 2 to 3 times pw
#4 Firstly work back to 62kg, then 1kg at a time until the weight feels “right”, probably around 58kgs. Slowly is ok, but steadily!

Goodness, its instructive to look back like this occasionally, and good for the psyche to put it out there for others to see.

Well I’m still plugging away at my last goal, February 15th wanted to lose 3lbs by tomorrow. I’ve managed 2.6lbs but the last fraction of a pound is like climbing Mount Everest!!!

I think you’re right Marsie it’s good to look back and reaffirm now and again.

On the ‘Challenge ‘ there seem to be quite a few of us who are in the doldrums. I looked back in my journal and realised that I lost 10lbs during February but what have I done … concentrated on the disappointing 0.4lb I lost this week completely forgetting the ‘bigger’ picture!! Maybe we should all look back more often and remember where we’ve come from and not think only about the ‘blips’.

You’re both right, in that there is a tendency to dwell on the negatives rather than the positives. Looking back to my restart in January, I was 9st 5lb and weighed in at 8st 12lb this morning, so a full half stone lost – not huge, but a good improvement as far as I am concerned and now within touching distance of my original goal of 8st 9lb and a full 2st lost. Hoping that by the end of this week, I will be at least a pound closer to that target.

Keep going everyone, we CAN do this!!

Well two weeks ago my goal was to lose 3lb. Not huge but this morning I made it with a few ounces to spare and just 2 days over goal. It would seem that my plateau is over thank goodness. So my next goal is another 3lbs by March 16th, so another two weeks. Should be doable.

Hope your making your goals … if there’s anybody out there!!

I have just reached a mini goal of getting under 73 kgs, for the third time. This time I never want to see that number again. Only 2 weeks to blood test and 2.5 to doctors appointment so still plenty of time for improvement.

I am not setting another mini goal yet although I do want HbA1c to be under 5.9 but even if it is the same it will be an improvement as i am on less insulin now. Keep on keeping on…

Well done Verano and sunshinegirl – such a good feeling, and so motivating, when one reaches a mini-goal.

Verano, can I join you in your mini-goal please? Having had a 2nd plateau lasting about 8 days in week 5, (now on day 4 week 7) I am thrilled to have lost 4lbs in the past 8 days – 2.5lbs within the past 3 – which is my fastest loss since week one 🙂 However, I do know that sadly, now the scales are moving downwards again, I am unlikely to maintain this level of loss. But losing 3lbs by 16th (so exactly 2 weeks) seems to be a reasonable goal, notwithstanding that I am going away for a week on Tuesday. Just hoping I don’t continue my pattern to date – a week of good weight loss, followed by a week plateau 🙁

If I manage the 3lbs, that will put me within 3lbs of my original goal weight 🙂 But I am now reducing my goal weight by a further 4 lbs, so I will even be within half a stone of that 🙂

Good luck to mini-goalers, whatever your target. And special good luck with your blood test, sunshinegirl.

    3. Try to keep to 10000 steps a day
    4. Don’t fall too far off the wagon on my short cruise this week.

Don’t panic about the cruise, Mariet, just make sure to have a good time. Haven’t been on a cruise myself, but I understand the food selection is broad, so it should be fairly easy to stick to the BSD principles and not do too much damage to your weight in a week. Keep an eye on the carbs and don’t worry about the calories and you should be fine.

Hydration is one of my issues too. It is too easy to let it slide and I have suffered for that this week, with constipation as a consequence. Trying hard to rectify that at the moment.

Good luck with achieving your goals and have a wonderful week away.

    Hi Mariet

I think your goal for March may be a little ambitious if you are cruising! I have been on a few and must admit have come back weighing a bit less! I think that I’m pretty sensible with food but did have the occasional desserts. The wine etc. on the ships we were on was quite expensive plus an18% gratuity added so we tended not to drink a great deal, think the combination of that and probably more walking helped. Don’t stress too much just enjoy!

Goosegogg well done on your loss so far. Don’t be too disheartened if your GP doesn’t welcome this plan with open arms. This plan doesn’t fit in with the current dietary advice and there seem to be varying reactions to us following this way of eating. I don’t know your starting weight or your medical conditions but be prepared for your GP to act with extreme caution. On the other hand don’t let that put you off as lots of people on these threads have reduced or completely removed lots of medications from their daily routine.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

I’m with you SunnyB on this topic. Have tried senna but think I may need to do more research on the internet. Had warm water with lemon first thing yesterday but to no avail. All advice gratefully received!!

Hi Verano – I routinely take chia seeds and inulin, which usually keeps things moving, but as I said, the hydration slipped early last week, with unwelcome consequences. Have been drinking senna leaf tea for the last couple of days, but nothing doing yet. Could do with things shifting tomorrow, as I have my weekly weigh-in on Monday! Better get in the kitchen and make another pot of senna tea!

Hi Verano, you may be right but I’m hoping that setting the bar high will keep me focused 🙂 Luckily I am going with my mother and she is no drinker, in fact she tends to look disapprovingly at a second glass so I’ll have an ally there.

Last night I had what I thought was going to be a huge challenge, went to the movies (gold class! Table service in the movie!) then on to an Italian restaurant for a birthday celebration for a friend. I did have 2 glasses of wine but declined the complimentary popcorn (friend’s husband ate it along with his own… thin as a rail, eats anything that’s not moving!) and was delighted to find that there were heaps of good choices on the menu. Grilled barramundi with lemon butter and steamed veges, yum! It’s given me confidence that this is a way of life I can stick with.

Bloke41 five days out of seven for your 20,000 steps is great. We can’t be perfect but if we get more ‘good’ days than ‘bad’ then all is well!

Mariet today is my 8 month anniversary of being on BSD. I am a slower loser probably because I have my good weeks and not so good ones. I can honestly say I have only had one ‘out of control’ day and even then it was only around 1300 calories and 90 odd grams of carbs. I really do think that this is an achievable way of life and there are many people like Captainlynne and Krysia, and lots of others who are maintaining quite happily. I think we all know that losing the weight is the easier part, it’s keeping it off that’s the real challenge. It is possible.

    Just don’t give in!

FYI Verano, by coincidence the health section in today’s fairly raggy Sunday paper had a paragraph noting that kiwi fruit may be helpful for constipation. ..”2 large portions” (?) were said to have “more fibre than a bowl of bran cereal” but more important was the “enzyme actinidin”, stimulating certain receptors in the colon. As I said, only a paragraph, so nothing in the way of back up data but thought it may be of interest given your earlier post.

Hi Verano – have you tried aloe vera? It is a very good natural gentle action. You can take the gel or I take a tablet that also has acidophilus(?not sure if I spelled that correctly- it’s good bacteria) added to it when I find I’m a bit sluggish. It’s worth a try if you continue to have problems – note that it is NOT a laxative like senna.

Feeling more confident now that this may be doable without the rigid counting and planning so I will continue to ‘wing it’ until the four week challenge finishes and review with a weekly weigh-in only each Monday morning. Monday will be my fast day if I have to throw in a 6:1 adjustment, and I will log and count on fast days as usual if I have to use them. I knew I couldn’t have put much on as I was still comfortably in my size 8-10 clothes at the end of the week, but still very pleased that it was actually a drop and to almost my lowest weight.

Mixnmatch – how fantastic that you were able to go away without any scales and still lose weight. You must have made some really good food choices over the week and you definitely didn’t over do the portion sizes. Was it effortless or did you put a lot of thought into your choices?

  • posted by Mixnmatch

Pretty effortless to be honest, many of my adjustments now have become the norm when eating out. I had three main meals out, two at Wetherspoon’s, where I had the 14 oz steak, but got them to add a salad in place of the chips and stuff, and a rarebit burger where I had the bun and a few chips and onion rings and left the rest. The rump steak salad was pretty BSD friendly except for some rather nice fresh croutons in place of the expected olives, but I called in on the re-opening of a shop in Hayle after a refit on my walk back and had a few olives there from their nibbles table while enjoying a chat and a browse of the new line. Self catering was largely following the usual principles, I did a cauli version of a cheesy pie, which did two days with different additions, and we had pork fajitas two days with multi seeded wraps that were nice. I had two and a half pasties, and one ice cream over the week as well, so was certainly indulging in some of the local specialities. I was gutted that the Salt Bar had run out of the seafood stew though on the specials board as I think I would have enjoyed that even more.

That is so good that it was effortless to stay with the BSD when you were eating out. It looks like restaurants cater much more for our way of eating now than they did before. Or maybe it is that I never realised pre-BSD that you could make healthy choices when eating out.

It looks like you will stay in your size 8 to 10 clothes for ever now that this way of eating has become your ‘new normal’. It is a lovely thought that we can continue effortlessly into maintenance.

Great result mixnmatch. It just shows that this plan can be incorporated into ‘life’ which is what we need really. We all know diets don’t work!!

Thanks for the advice girls. Marsie I love kiwi but when I checked them there are 10g carbs in one fruit! Mind you I have to say they sound so much more appetising than aloe vera! Luckylinda I didn’t know you could get aloe vera in tablet form. I have used a body cream in the past but must admit the smell was awful! Think I may blow the carbs and have a kiwi to see how that works first!

Well I’m half way to my next goal. I know it was only three pounds but slow and steady wins the race!!! Hope to lose the other 1.5lbs by the end of this week.

So good to hear from the maintainers it always gives me hope.

Weighed in at 1.5lb closer to my goal weigh this morning – 1.5lb still to go to get to exactly 2st lost and original goal weight, then hoping to manage to push for an extra 2lb loss, so overall I’m looking at a further loss of 3.5lb from this morning.

That feels quite scary actually. Success is so close now, but it almost feels surreal. I’ve struggled to control my weigh for too many years, to now have successful loss and a way of keeping things in control and be able to maintain, feels almost unbelievable.

Anyway, hope that there will be some mini goals smashed this week and to be reading positive posts for those weighing in. Good luck for a successful week everyone.

    Checking in after the cruise.

It was easy after all to stick to the principles and to get my steps wandering over the ship. I made a rule to use the lift only if I was going up more than 4 decks, first I thought never use the lift but 5 decks nearly killed me!

We had very rough seas, couldn’t get into port and there were 2 heart attacks and a broken arm from a fall down the stairs. Luckily my 83 year old mother wasn’t sick and neither was I.

Today’s weigh in (not a week but I couldn’t wait!) 400g down so I’m happy with that.

One question though, I am not losing anything from my waist. 6cm in the first week but nothing since although my hips and bust are loosing. Is that common? I would dearly love to have a clear waist again 😯

It’s been inspiring as always to read other’s posts on these forums, keep up the good work everyone!

Our bodies are unique to us and they all behave differently, so lose weight from different areas at different rates and different times. I’m quite lucky in that the areas I carry weight – stomach, mid-drift, thighs – seem to be the areas I lose from first, but others might not experience the same.

I’ve lost from all areas now I think, but my waist is still not less than 50% of my height and I doubt this will happen, as I only have a few pounds left to lose to get to target weight. If you still have quite a bit to lose, you may find that your waist shrinks some more yet, Mariet. Meanwhile, toning exercises might work to help to cinch things in a bit – Pilates perhaps.

Stick with it everyone and good luck at your next significate weigh-in.

Well done Sg! You have done amazingly to bring your insulin down and that’s the name of the game after all!

SunnyB my downfall is also not enough fluids. When I was ill a few weeks ago I was drinking so much water to swallow down the pills, I needed a full glass 4 times a day just for those. I did lose at a much steadier rate than now. Probably because I keep ‘forgetting’ to drink now. For me I really have to make a conscious effort everyday to drink enough.

Well my goal has been blown out of the window by mindless eating this week so back to a goal of 5lbs in the next 8 days which is extremely unlikely. I’m away next Sunday and the 5lbs would have taken me to a 2 stone loss since I last saw my friends in December!

So to be realistic, I’ll go for a 2lb loss by this time next week which would give me a 25lb loss and also take me closer to the next stone down. It’s ONLY 2lbs I can do that! Especially now that I have jumped off the runaway chocolate train!

Pretty certain being really conscious of my hydration has helped this week. I’ve no excuse for not doing well over the w/e, as there’s nothing particular happening, so I just need to stay in control and it should be fine.
