on 18 Jun 2018 at 14:50 in Fast 800Hi Maggie! Sorry to hear of your shock this morning… I’d be inclined to keep some old socks handy to help disguise things until it catches up! 🙂
LeeLee – glad to hear the pressure is off somewhat regarding your dad. What’s the latest on your situation? Do you have to just live with it for now?
Momof2 – my condolences also.
SueBlue – gosh, that was really rude and no wonder your daughter was upset. You’ll have the last laugh though Sue! We all will! 🙂
Abisaysyes – all are welcome here!
Good luck for tomorrow everyone.

Hi fellow BSDs!
Well, I’ve been on my jollies to France. Initially stayed at my Fathers and then four days in the champagne region. We more or less stayed off the sweets although I did indulge in French palmiers which are divine 😋. Weighed in this morning and have only put in a pound! Back on it today with real determination. 💪
How are you all?

Found this is Asda last weekend for those interested, but I think I prefer the parma ham base quiche idea myself…. It’s a normal size pizza and half is 21 carbs. http://www.veganfoodandliving.com/vegan-and-gluten-free-cauliflower-based-pizza-launching-supermarkets-nationwide/
Just starting the Pioppi Diet book… I’m gradually wading through all the recommended reads and podcasts etc. I’m like a sponge…. I wish I’d shown just half this interest in biology and science at school….!
Fingers crossed for you S-G getting a favorable reply! -
Hello all…jumping in to my second round of this diet.
I found it so effective and lost 2.5 stone. OK, I’ve regained 1.5 stone of that but have kept off a stone for about 2-3 years now which is very good going. I now want to do another round. Dog walking, job juggling, middle aged mum to three who seems to be constantly on the go and yet struggles to get enough exercise. Basic diet good, with some extended wanderings off piste from time to time!
Looking forward to getting to know you and supporting each other.

I am aware I am going to say “YES BUT’ …yet again and I know how stuck that makes everyone feel. My legs and arms are like sticks and my body a big blob in the middle, rather like a disabled spider. Clothes continue to make me look like a sausage with bulges or the alternative, a garment which is far too big on my shoulders but skims the excesses, so to speak !
-
My personal experience was that my scales changed a lot at the start of this WoE, which is how it works for people who are moving from a high carb diet, but most of it is water loss. So sometimes people come to the forum who have been on other diets and they are very disappointed with minimal weight loss.
Over time my pattern of weight loss has changed, now my size is changing and the scales are not. – Taking measurements, not just of waist and hips, but being open to noticing changes in arms and legs has helped reassure me. – Recently I managed to drop a dress size, while only seeing a very minor change in the scales.
-
Hi all, if we are weighing today I have lost half a pound taking my total loss to 4lbs. Still keeping on…. Although I have a meal out on Wednesday and the restaurant in owned by an Englishman (here in France) and he cooks what I call stodge. I have sent him an email asking to see what is on the menu (it will be a set menu for a quiz night, so no choice) and told him I have an intolerance to starch. Waiting to see what he comes back with. All I ask is that I get a bit extra veg or a salad and pray it isn’t something made of starch like a risotto – very hard to pick the rice out. 🙂
-
Oh I should have said. I am not hungry and I am well into ketosis. These last few days I have only been able to eat about half my food.

You are all so helpful thankyou. Trouble is I have already done all this research and as far as I can see I am following the advice. I miss breakfast, I keep my protein really moderate. I miss out my beloved coffee and cream. I take cod liver oil, vit D and magnesium supplements. I am active and my TDEE is 1700 calories a day. If it wasn’t for the fact that I have no choice I would throw it all in. I am thoroughly p….d off. You are right though something has got to change and I am wondering if I should go on a longer fast, I wouldn’t really hesitate but there have been a few occasions when low blood sugar migraines best me. Oh by the way I have no health problems and I am not on any medication.
-
Hi s-g no today is day 7. Tuesday is day 1 I think! Glad things are mainly good.
-
Thanks Maggie an interesting article that fly’s in the face of current thinking. I’ve just read the Pioppi Diet, by the same author, and found it fascinating. It is basically a Mediterranean low carb diet but without the counting of calories and carbs, and fasting for 24hrs, dinner to dinner, on around day six of seven each week.
-
Hi jocasta,
The BSD is focused on reducing insulin levels and comes out of treatment for diabetes. So many of the people who follow this WoE have come from eating carb high diets. –However it is not just carbs which raise insulin, but also protein. Insulin’s role in the body is not just to deal with blood sugar, but it is also the gatekeeper on if we use our fat stores to make up for the difference between cals eaten and cals burnt. Therefore a high protein diet will raise insulin, and prevent fat loss.
I would suggest watching some of the youtube videos by Jason Fung, and Dr Bikman to understand more about the impact protein has on insulin levels. – There is one link on the take a look at this thread to a podcast by Dr Bikman that I posted over a month ago to that forum that I would particularly recommend for this topic. From the research I have read Intermittent fasting working around a low carb, moderate protein, high fibre, moderate fat diet is best for weight loss. Possibly with a few days every so often of reducing protein (ie research fasting mimicking diet) to gain the advantage of autophagy.
-
Hi Jocasta and welcome. Have you calculated your TDEE https://tdeecalculator.net – it may be lower than you expected? Are you making sure to drink plenty of water, that can inhibit weight loss.
After such an extended period with little result I’d be tempted to shake it up a little. Stick with the Atkins if you’re happy with it but try and slot your meals into a limited period. There are variations, but good to start with 16:8 – say eat between 11 – 7, then move onto longer fasting periods and shorter eating windows.
Adding coconut oil to your coffee in the morning will give you the satiety you need. Coconut oil also boosts ketones.
Good luck and if you don’t fancy the fasting hope you find something to kick your weightloss into shape!

Thankyou so much for replying. I think I was sparing in my post on the descriptions of my food. I was attempting to give a brief overall description , which was my mistake. I do ring the changes with the fats and I am absolutely certain that I eat no more cheese, I weigh it. (I am very lazy in the morning). Salads are packed with interesting stuff, not just a bit of lettuce and flavoured well. My lazy breakfast is sometimes 12 grams of brazil nuts. Dinner dishes are not simply a slab of meat or fish but cooked with flavour, with all of the good veg. I too believe I am not getting much more than than 800 cals and on some days I am not eating breakfast at all. I don’t think there is a big difference that I can make as there are days when I may not have the cream in the coffee, although it is always measured when I do. I have been reading very extensively and cannot figure out what I am doing wrong. I am hoping for a light bulb moment or a wonderful tip that will come my way. Just as an aside, the Atkins boards are full of the reports of Atkins death and of course say the absolute opposite. He was not overweight and he died after a fall on the ice ! Nevertheless it is still not working for me.
Thanks again for taking the trouble. -
Brilliant JGwen. We all need a little more self-love. Thanks 🤗

Hi Jocasta welcome and lets hope you get better results with the BSD. It is like the Atkins but without the bad fats. Yes your diet seems very heavy on fat. I have been trying to work out your cream calories but can only guestimate. I think for the 45ml you had in coffee and your egg custard you are around 150 calories – your cheese is another 100 calories and are you sure you have only 25g and that is half the size of a small matchbox, so not a very filling breakfast choice. Meat in dinner around 250 to 300 calories – all in all you are only having around the 800 calories we eat but there seems to be little real food, just meat cream and cheese.
You are going to have to decide whether you are Atkins or BSD – and obviously we will all think the BSD is best – but it is up to you. I dont think you are eating enough real food, just getting your calories from fat although you mention green salad and green veg – so a bit of rabbit food. I have been on this diet for 2 years and I have only felt hungry during the first week or so. I think the difference is we have as much fat or even more but different types of fat like olive oil, avocados, nuts, full fat Greek yoghurt and so on. Those and other fats we eat are seriously dense in calories so are carefully counted into the diet.
What I would suggest is that you get the book The 8 Week Blood Sugar Diet by Dr Mosley, read it carefully and then look at some of the lovely recipes you can make. To me, your diet is very restrictive and not at all interesting or appetizing. Today I am having Breakfast Greek yoghurt with raspberries and strawberries (I have a glut in the garden), Lunch, a salad made of a whole courgetti in ribbons, half a red pepper roasted in the oven with a small chicken breast with a dressing of a tablespoon of Greek yogurt, tablespoon of lemon juice, a teaspoon of olive oil and some black pepper. For Dinner I am having Spicy Cajun Bean Burgers (from the BSD recipe book) with baby gem lettuce, cherry tomatoes, cucumber. I drink one or two green teas no milk or cream, one coffee with full fat milk and about 2 litres of water – water being the key to keeping full and keeping hydrated. I allow myself a 10g piece of 70% dark chocolate as a treat every other night and that makes todays total 750 calories and I have eaten some lovely food. You never feel like you are on a diet. Let us know what you decide but Atkins himself was over 18 stone and died of a heart attack. That to me speaks volumes. Good luck with what ever you decide.

on 18 Jun 2018 at 10:57 in Fast 800Hi all, it think you are a bit mixed up today too Verano, today is day 6 and we weigh in tomorrow – or am I wrong. I didn’t take a break yesterday, just not dwelling on the ‘diet’ when there are other things to think about – good and bad – fortunately for me it is mainly good. The weight is just a smidge lower and the BG is running at 5.4 with less insulin so will let it settle down before I reduce more. Have a good week all.

Well done ChimpTamer, what an achievement. It really is powerful understanding the reasons behind weight gain and loss isn’t it?
Good luck with the rest of your journey 🙂 -
The more I read the more convinced I am that the whole merry go round of CV diseases is rooted in visceral fat. If it’s not I’m going to be very disappointed! For an apple like me it’s going to mean going down to the bottom of the healthy weight range.
If I was a doctor in general practice I’d find it very frustrating that so much of medicine is just management of disease, not cures. -

(Yes the knee replacement club is one that a few of my friends are in too, not a membership I was looking forward to. ) I think after doing the recipes for a while you become sort of ‘carb savvy’ anyway and automatically know what you should be eating to achieve results. Anyway – strictly 800 today so onwards and downwards !

I have been reading posts on the forum for the last week because I am having such poor results from Atkins. I started the diet five weeks ago and have only lost one and a half pounds, maybe two. I am currently eating as follows.
Bkfst…25grms cheese.
mid morning…coffee 15 mls cream
lunch…2 egg omlette and green salad. 1 tblspn mayo, sometimes fish.
mid afternoon …coffee 15 mls cream
dinner…100 grms meat or fish green veg.
snack…1 egg and 15 mls cream with sweetener made into an ‘egg custard’.
I realise this food is heavier on fat than the BSD ( it is Atkins) but it keeps me completely satisfied, in fact for the last couple of days I haven’t been able to eat even half of this amount. I have ketones in my urine and have had for some time. I am not without energy. I am able to miss breakfast on some days quite easily but I have to be careful as if I am very active and do not have a snack with me and get hungry, it can trigger a migraine. Migraines are however better than they were, as is my Rocacea and hiatus hernia/reflux. I walk several times a week. I do hand weights several times a week. I am busy and active all day (grandchildren). I am thinking of switching over to the BSD but I am concerned that the lower fat will leave me ravenous. I am nonplussed with the absence of weight loss. Any input would be gratefully received. Thanks -

on 18 Jun 2018 at 10:06 in Fast 800Apologies all for absence, I’ve been catching up with reading, I’ve got so much on my kindle waiting for me! Also mixing oils (thank you Allie and Dr Axe). After hearing concerns about loose skin I’ve been exploring ways to prepare my skin for shrinkage 😃 so busy with the oils and mixing bath salts. I don’t know about everyone else but taking care of my skin hasn’t been a huge priority so I was really happy at how much softer and hydrated my skin felt after a sea salt soak and then an almond oil massage. I’m expecting Dr Axe’s magic face serum to roll back the years!!
I’m surprised that squidgy fat is appearing all over the place. I’d sort of expected it to be in one area, get cleared and then move onto the next but it seems to work less systematically. I was taken aback this morning to wake up lopsided – one boob’s half the size of the other. It was a bit of a hullo old friend moment 😍 I do hope my body prioritises the other one!
So my body’s definitely changing shape, the scales are keeping pretty quiet though.
I’ve truly never lost weight like this before, my body’s changing quite differently from other weightloss attempts, which were close to starvation as it was the carbs causing the problem. I think that’s why fasting isn’t hard for me because I’ve been pretty close to it before.
Look forward to joining al my fellow zoomers at the weigh in tomorrow. Best of luck everyone ! -
Hi Verano, you called. 🙂
I don’t have any experience of statins myself, and it hasn’t been an area I have been researching. – Perhaps I should have as there is a family history of heart disease on my fathers side of the family.
But I have been looking recently about the benefits of Intermittent Fasting v low carb v fasting mimicking . – It sounds to me like there is a useful summary on Dr Jungs website https://idmprogram.com/fasting-lowers-cholesterol-fasting-16/ of why intermittent fasting is the best option for drug free response to cholesterol, but isn’t as effective as the drugs. HTHs -
Hi KrysiaD,
I saw a podcast by Dr Fung recently, which may have been this one, in which he mentioned how important it is to him to ensure that the information is out there in a free, or low cost way to help people heal themselves and how it boosts him to receive letters of thanks from people who have turned their lives around. – I was wondering if we shouldn’t track down an address that we could send a thank you letters to Dr MM. -

Love, love this approac!!Top tips that have helped me

Not that I jumped on the scales this morning and have any good news… 😁 -
DAY 7 of 7 . Got a bit mixed up with days yesterday! Anyway, last day of this week today. Does anybody want another ‘one week at a time’ thread or maybe a ‘just 7days’ to ….. whatever thread?
S-g life is full of good bits and bad bits. When the good outweigh the bad we’ve had a ‘good’ day. Hope you enjoyed your ‘break’ yesterday.
All my good intentions were ruined by one moment of weakness when I agreed to an Indian meal out when I really wasn’t hungry! Such is life. Anyway today is another day and tomorrow I’ll be wiping the slate clean and starting again!

You could use Fatsecret as a calorie counter only although it does come in diary format. Click on ‘options’ bottom right hand side of the page and tick only calories. Alternatively just type in ‘nutrition’ of any food in google and you will get the calories. Just a thought but with this way of eating carbs are important too.
-
I use Cronometer just for calories/nutrition Although I have also linked my activity watch and scales so it does a limited amount of lifestyle management too that is optional. It, like most lists, isn’t all encompassing so you have to add your own from other sources or use alternatives. I haven’t come across any pure calories apps, but then that wouldn’t be any use to me as I am mainly tracking nutrition macros.
-
Does anyone know of an app which simply gives you the caloric value of food .
No diaries , food or exercise planners just the calories ? Not life management .
THANKS , YayaM -

I remember you both mentioning the 4 week challenges, so decided to go hunting!
I am still swimming. Went to aqua today after a 10 day break (turning heads in Ireland obvs!) It was so hard to motivate myself to go. It’s amazing how quickly you lose the will and the routine, but knew I had to go and once there, I really enjoyed it.
I’m hoping that now exercise is part of my routine, it will help with the next cycle. I always feel more energised after moving!I have a family wedding on 13th August in Northampton and do I’ve booked a personal shopper at Debenhams for 23rd July to pick an outfit. Thought that would be a nice reward.
Allie, Dad is really great at the moment. Only reviewed quarterly now, so pressure has dropped a bit now…thank you for remembering.
How are you both?

First day of week 2 tomorrow. My OT was less restrained than me at a family do yesterday. So despite 5 days of being off carbs, she indulged happily.
Today she’s in a right state, mood all over the place, energy gone, tears and tantrums, and the NEED for white carbs.
I think she’s got a monkey on her back alright!
I like the picture you paint of the monkey, Chimp tamer! When I quit smoking it was a little gremlin in my brain I was starving, as it was me or him! If I get more trouble on this I will try your technique. I agree no means no. I really need to learn to use the word though! I haven’t ‘cheated’ but have been less discerning as it was fathers day and TOH had baked a coffee & walnut cake for him. So it was in my planned calories, but…
Eating the rainbowc lots of different colors of veg, is so much easier on this WOL, and I think that’s why I feel OK. How much ‘hunger’ is your body saying ”I want nutrients” but all we feed it is the same flat empty carbs!
Good luck with the week ahead

on 17 Jun 2018 at 21:37 in Fast 800Hello all
Leaving my beloved snoozing forum, searching for a quick kick up the arse, so going to join this challenge a wee bit late!Various health and holiday challenges have led to a nearly 13lb gain after an 85lb loss. I’m not overweight but a few refined carbs have crept in, this stimulating my appetite and cravings and then making it hard to maintain! So, time for a reboot! I’m dropping to 1100 tomorrow as have a hectic day and then full blown BSD 800 from Tuesday when back at work. Typical me, to be starting the week of my birthday, but I don’t want to wait another week.
Today I weighed in at 148lbs and will join you on weighday 26th June. Way to keep accountable on my birthday 😢😢😢
Hope everyone had a good Weekend and Father’s Day for those celebrating.

Well done Mrs Thompson! Onwards and downwards….
Thanks Alliecat! I have seen your contributions on many threads and am aware of your amazing achievements. Lovely that you stick around to encourage others! -
Mrs Thompson – that doesn’t sound too serious, as transgressions go! Well done you! I think the 1st week has to be the hardest and we’re nearly there! I’ve been sticking to the mealplans in the cookbook religously as it meant I didn’t have to think too much about food this week or work things out (which would have been diastrous!) as all the thinking had already been done for me. My husband tried it for a while but gave in quite quickly and started supplementing with beers, triple portions, extra meat etc! He’s ridiculously skinny anyway so it was a terrible idea for him to even try but he’s clearly trying to be much more supportive than he has been of other weight loss attempts in the past which I really appreciate. I’m looking forward to the end of the month when I should be more deadline free and can start to work in some more exercise. Yes week 2 tomorrow – so onward and – actually in this case – downward, hopefully! 😉
