    Hi Malkay,
11 pounds is nothing to be disappointed about. My weight loss has been slow – I am a couple of weeks further on than you and I’ve only just clocked up the magic one stone. While I have lost a bit off my waistline, I seem to have lost a bit more off my backside. And I’ve still got abdominal fat. For what it’s worth, this past week I seem to have managed 5 consecutive days of weight loss – I have lost about 3lbs this week, the most I’ve managed on this diet – I have no idea why. My progress has been a bit down, bouncing up, plateauing, then a bit more loss.
You say you are still losing weight – that’s great. Do you feel more energetic – that’s 11 lbs you are no longer carrying around. Those fat gremlins that have so assiduously built up stockpiles in your body will fight hard to keep hold of the stuff. And our bodies don’t react in a uniform way, losing a nice equal amount all over, at a uniform rate.
Maybe you need to look at what you’ve been doing and see if there are any small adjustments you can make, either to food intake or upping your exercise levels. Have you been stressed about anything, perhaps? Are you on medication?

Don’t apologise for being fed up – we all get like that – and sometimes it’s good to have a whinge but focus on what you have achieved. I’m sure there are other people in a similar situation on these forums who might have something helpful to chip in. But don’t give up. Keep your chin up!
    Take care,
    Rose

Hi, I’m in week 3 and freezing. Wearing several layers and fluffy dressing gown when indoors. I also get flashes of intense chills. I guess it’s my body reacting to this new regime. Actually being cold is preferable to the hot flushes I am used to. I haven’the read about this as a side effect though.

    Hi cat girl,
I am only looking back as far as when I picked up Michaels book. That’s when I started to change.

I have tested myself. Chips were in the table, you know those home made really fat ones, with the most beautiful golden brown colour? Mine for the eating. I was able to have one, didn’t get excited , so moved them on.

I don’t care how long it takes, I will get there.

    How are you doing?

    Love Lucia

Thank you. This sort of tumour is dealt with by excision of ‘wide margins’ and I think mine will be done by a plastic surgeon specialising in mohs – now don’t ask me what that means exactly, but apparently layers are removed until there are no cancer cells present anymore. Sometimes radiotherapy and/or chemo is needed as well. There are only five specialist sarcoma centres in the UK and I am extremely fortunate to be quite close to one that’s linked to Christies in Manchester.

These tumours are like something from the depths of oceans inasmuch they have tentacle like features but once they are removed then you are cured. They rarely spread either. They do grow back if the margins aren’t wide enough so – give me wide margins I say. I did say to someone the other day that I felt out on a limb and that wasn’t appropriate either, but then I guess you know me by now.

I have had some great support from Macmillan, Sarcoma.org, Rare Cancers and a Facebook group – in this group we are called ‘unicorns’ because someone said dfsp are rarer than a unicorn which I like. It is very scary but you know what, like a lot of you here, by going on this diet I’d faced up to doing something positive about my health and I have felt empowered so far by online communities, members of one or two re: sarcoma I will be meeting in a couple of support groups.

I’ll call back to see you all and let you know how I’m doing. If by some slim chance you ever come across anyone who has had or has got a dfsp let me know as they are so rare a lot of informing and educating is needed.

So sorry to hear your news, and like capainlynne and hashimoto have said you will get lots of support from the forum.

All the best for your journey ahead. X

  • Less than 10g of fat. That sounds like more of a low fat diet? The bsd is not a low fat diet, quite the opposite in fact. I know these numbers are what was recommended for you personally Fatty but I wouldn’t want M to think its what is expected of this diet. As you point out, including more fat is a great way of feeling full and mobilising the body into fat burning mode.

  • There is a general rule about protein grams equalling the target weight… so if for example your target weight is 80kg then your target protein is 80grams… I don’t really know about any others… Luckily for me my Endocrinologist has provided me with a breakdown of what she recommends for me… and they are… (90g of carbs, 40-80g Protein and less than 10g of fat)… I cannot stay with the <10g fat, as I a just hungry and not satisfied at all… most days I have about 20-10g of fat. I cannot tell you if I have been loosing weight as it is only day 5 for me… and I have not weighed yet… but I feel good.

    Hi Boog23.

I know some folk in the US have asked for copies of the book from the UK, so there is already some awareness.

‘On the road’, if all else fails a visit to the Golden Arches (or similar) can provide some kind of protein, just leave the carbs – no pancakes and syrup 😱. My friend’s husband caused chaos in the Arches, asking for a sausage and egg biscuit without the biscuit. He eventually settled for it as it came and just left the biscuit! Boiled eggs and cheese can travel well and don’t take much preparation. Just avoid ‘all you can eat’ buffets!

Stay in touch, we look forward to hearing your progress.

Hi Celia, I felt the cold a lot more for the first two weeks or so and it took a good couple of weeks to start sleeping better. I also felt very tired and lightheaded after a few days but it all passed. I am now starting week six and am 5 kilos down. Stick with it, you will notice things changing with time and really well done on your weight loss so far. Good job!

I haven’t posted for quite some time. My last posts were a bit negative as I wasn’t losing much weight, and nothing from my waist. I therefore said I would wait until something had shifted, and then post. I am now at the end of my seventh week, and am going away for a few days on Sunday. Sadly, very little has shifted. I am still losing weight – very slowly- but have lost absolutely nothing from my waist. Altogether, over 7 weeks, I have lost 11 pounds, and I had hoped to lose at least a stone. I could not understand where the weight had gone from, then today, I caught sight of my reflection, and realised that my trousers looked really baggy round my bum. This would be fine if they were loose round my waist, and I could buy a size smaller, but they are just as tight round my waist as the day I started. I understand that fat round the hips is healthy for a woman, so therefore I am losing healthy, rather than unhealthy fat. I am so disappointed, and feel utterly despondent. I was so happy at the beginning, and feel I have given it my all, but now am not sure what to do. Don’t know whether to keep going, switch to 5:2, just keep low carb, or have a binge out. Sorry for the negativity, but utterly peed with the whole thing today, and wanted to get it off my chest.

Oh dear, just as one crisis is happily averted, another one looms. One of our number, auntylil, she is over on the ‘alternatives to fizzy pop’ thread, has just posted that she has been diagnosed with cancer. I know a lot of you chatted with her in the past and she was the first person I met on these forums and she has been keeping me amused ever since. I know auntylil won’t be moping about this but I also know you will want to give her support in the way only this forum can.

    Hi Lynne

I think the BSD will be a big hit here when word gets out. The official release date is March 22-I suspect that Dr. Mosly will begin doing radio and television interviews about it and then it will blow up. I hope and pray I can be an example to folks here of what this diet can accomplish as the U.S. is sorely in need of a solution.

You are right about the challenges in the U.S., especially with the food system. ‘On the road’, as you have discovered, it is very difficult to find the healthiest of foods-It takes some planning and effort. The breakfasts at most motels and hotels are indeed simple carb heavy, ie; cheap. Texas, as well as the rest of the south is especially bad. The east and west coast,s much better.

I have friends that pack their own food for a trip of several days. That seems like a lot of work to me as I have to admit that I am essentially, at least to this point, pretty lazy when it comes to food preparation. But I think I may have to get over that soon. You and so many others on this forum inspire me to do better.

thank you for the well wishes,
    be well and stay great

Hi Celia – welcome to the forum and the BSD family. My best guess is it’s your body protesting about the change of regime and the lack of carbs. I have not had either of the problems luckily, but most people report sleeping better, so I think you can expect that to settle and improve as you progress.

You have made an excellent start and look forward to hearing how you progress. ….. Good Luck!

    Hello Janet

Thank you for checking up on me – on March 10th, last Thursday informed that supposed sebaceous cyst I had removed a few weeks previously from my right thigh has been diagnosed as a rare sarcoma, a Dermatofibrosarcoma Protuberans (DFSP) and if you think that of all cancers 1% are sarcomas (soft tissue tumours) of them DFSP are less than 1%. Consequently dieting, bowls, wooing etc has been far from my mind. I think some of the things I was dealing with that I thought were to do with the 800 diet are in fact systemic symptoms because now I know I am ill. I will be seeing a consultant for more surgery and treatment next week. I will come back here! But I guess you and a lot of the other inspirational and supportive people I met here will have moved on too. I wish you all enourmous success and better quality of life because of the life changes you are making. β™₯

  • Like you I’m in week 4 – 2 more days to go. And like you, weight loss has been a tad slow after the initial week. However, I started keeping an eye on carbs at the beginning of this week and so far, have dropped 2lb, which is an improvement on weeks 2 and 3. The general consensus seems to be to try and keep carbs below 50g per day. I have actually been hitting considerably lower than that, but as much because the foods I have been choosing have accidentally been low carb, rather than actively seeking out those with particularly low-carb content. I haven’t worried too much about the ratio carbs to fats to protein. Have just been ensuring I have full fat everything to help me feel full for longer and kick into fat burn mode and to eat plenty of high protein foods.

There does seem to be an anomaly reported on various threads, which seems to suggest that for many, between weeks 2 and 4 are a bit of a plateau, when weight loss is low to zero and that if you just keep to your 800cals a day, the weight will eventually start to drop again.

It certainly sounds like you are sticking to the 800 cals, so you could just continue as you are and the weight should begin to drop again soon. On the other hand, it can’t hurt just to check that there is nothing you are eating, that has a surprisingly high carb count.

Not sure any of this helps much, but this is how I have tackled a similar situation.

I’m 3 days into the diet and have lost 3 pounds so far and finding it all very easy to do so far.

One thing though is I am really feeling the cold. It started last night, I had to get up to wrap myself up in a fluffy dressing gown and blanket, turn the heating on and go back to bed all wrapped up. Anyone else experienced that?

Another point is I’m not sleeping, I wake at 2 or 3am and can’t get back to sleep for about 4 hours.

  • Please can anyone tell me what the target ration is of Carbohydrate/Fat/Protein? There seems to be such a range of advice from different sources and I would like to check that I am getting it or less correct.
I am on week 4 and lost very little for the last three weeks – I fear that although I am under 800 calories average over each week I may have the proportions wrong. (My Fitness Pal offers an upgrade that lets you specify your targets in terms of % or grams and I want to use that to keep check.) Many thanks to anyone out there who has an opinion!

Hi Boog23. Greetings from this side of the pond.

Just think, you could be one of those starting this revolution in the good old US of A when folk see your progress.

I’ll be interested to see how our American cousins do on this – I’ve spent some time there and can think of some challenges, but also some positives.

My friend in Texas asked me to send her the book and she was really keen. But last time we spoke, she said she’d tried it, but didn’t get her carbs low enough and can’t give up her diet yogurts! Mind you, she used to eat two frozen diet meals at a time because one wasn’t enough. Even worrying about her husband’s health can’t influence her to change.

I’ve visited towns where it was almost impossible to buy healthy, fresh food and everything at the diner was deep fried.

But I’ve also visited Whole Foods Market and grocery stores with shelves full of lovely fresh vegetables and fruit as well as all the meat, fish, poultry and cheese. The choice and quality never ceases to amaze me.

Many of the motels I’ve stayed at offer breakfast, but it’s almost always carbs or carbs with the occasional egg. And the portion sizes if I eat out are huge.

So I wish you and all my American brothers and sisters well, and look forward to hearing your progress.

Remember – the revolution could start with you πŸ˜ƒ

For anyone interested in such things, I’ve checked my bloods before and after eating this flatbread because I’ve never used coconut flour before. I could only manage half the flatbread, with 25g Brie and the results were: *drumroll*

    Before eating 4.5
    1 hour afterwards 4.4
    2 hours afterwards 4.0

    So I think that’s a keeper πŸ˜ƒ

    As a point of interest, I don’t think I’ve seen a reading of 4.0 before πŸ˜ƒ

Same as Gooismeid, I have lost 5 kilos in five weeks which I am absolutely thrilled with. Will have to work it out as a percentage though, which will be interesting. I see this as a way of life now not a diet and I don’t miss carbs at all. I am more preoccupied with all the full fat things I can now have and are much nicer. Another half stone to go to be within my bmi (and not just on the edge of it) and then another half stone to be back where I was in my twenties! Oh goodness, that was SUCH a long time ago!
