Thanx Cherrianne, good suggestions, will stock up on cherry toms and celery, I do like seeds too and cheese – actually I like most food ha ha.

I dont have scales whilst travelling but am continuing to measure my waist, did go down to 34 inches (from my original 37 inch waist) but now hovering at 34.5, this may be water retention from long haul flight. It’s sweltering here in Thailand but exercising daily by walking uphill on a steep incline near accomm – did 20 floors today – got me out of puff so must be doing some good! A case of onwards and upwards!

Limiting breakfast to eggs plus natural yoghurt – omelette with cheese is actually quite filling – seeing but not being tempted by the croissants, toast, danish pastries plus fruit such as melon, grapes. Dinner front, keeping to low carb is manageable in this country, was pleased to see this morning that Red Thai Curry soup with prawns is fairly low in carbs and again, is quite filling and actually enough for dinner.

It can be hard breaking eating habits of a lifetime but it can be done, the forum members’ posts are evidence of this and very encouraging. Onwards and upwards my friends.

Oh what a mess! Totally off plan for a week and feeling wretched.
Have read the book sweet poison and my head is spinning. I don’t know what my diet should be. This food plan makes sense as does the no sugar. I have done lots of thinking whilst stuffing my face and have come to the conclusion that I must limit carbs and sugar. I have to avoid cakes and biscuits which is hard as I have always made my own and enjoy doing so. How can I poison my family? I will have to get more inventive with vegetarian food too.
I feel my head is reeling with all I have read. I am angry that we have been given the wrong information in order to line someone’s pockets.
Really it all comes back to the decision I made a few years ago to eat only clean food. I need to add in the low carb to lose my excess weight.
I am angry with myself too because I was convinced to sign up to slimming world online. I can’t really afford it so feel bad. Some of the food plans I can use but it uses fry light, low fat cheese etc which I will not touch.
So I am going to creep away and re establish this food plan and try to resist joining any other commercial diets.

Malkay – there was a post on another thread by someone saying no weight loss at all, but that the scales showed less body fat percentage and more water. I think it was at day 11 or similar with same set of scales each day. So definitely things must be happening even if not where you want them to! As many say, what’s not going in has to show in improved shape eventually!

Nikki you have confirmed something to yourself – you can control what you eat when out. Ok ok the starchy veg BUT no biscuits and little of the mousse. You can confidently eat out when you can choose from a menu ! A positive step in my book 🙂

    Hi lachlanh,
I am not taking Metformin or any other medications and I don’t eat when my BGL is up, I just drink water til it comes down.

Only time my BGL is high is morning and I eat after it comes down, often 1pm.

hi tinforest – I feel guilty posting my progress because I know everyones situation, response to the diet, and path is different… all I can say is that I have felt similar to you on a number of occasions in the past and that all I have ever done is keep trying. that’s all we can do. having tried various diets in the past I am convinced this is the way forward. if you keep going I am sure you will have a breakthrough soon – don’t give up because as you know the alternative is not appealing 🙂

    Thanks Bill.
Because I am not able to eat a lot of the recipes in the book I am substituting mostly and it is helpful to input local produce (not in a packet) and get the calorie breakdown and carb fat and protein numbers for everything and have it automatically input a daily total.

Also happy with the steps registration…a lot more accurate than the thing on my wrist which I am about to give away since I am on a walking frame and it doesn’t register my steps accurately at all. The phone, in a bag on my hip registers brilliantly. I am using the SHealth for measuring my heartbeat now too, yesterday the first time I used it in the gym. All very new for me and I’m delighted and hopeful that I will be able to get very healthy with this…I have been using Samsung phones for years and have never explored the apps at all, just use my own ones I have downloaded, particularly the FODMAP one which has kept me out of hospitaal since I discovered it. Next week I am going into the Samsung store to ask them to show me what else is in my phone that I may benefit from.

Re:carbs…I’ve been keeping an eye on the carbs for years now, at one stage lost 20Kg on a high protein diet… til i discovered it created high inflammation and stimulated insulin too…so then I moved onto water and broth fasting. Acute awareness of carbs and no fructose is how I have stayed completely medication free in spite of type 2 diabetes and being overweight. I am the poster old girl for my GPs clinic, I am their ONLY post 10 years diagnosis diabetic patient who is completely medication free with perfect blood pressure and no diabetes side effects. I think they hate that I do all this on my own without their input but love the result. 🙂

This diet for me is more food than I have been eating…and I am hoping it will work, otherwise I am back to fasting as my insulin control. Which is not a great social thing, fasting is a bit isolating I find.

    END OF WEEK 2.

Hello People! I am now 108kg after 2 weeks so nearly 10kg lost! My fasting sugars have been 4.3-4.5 for four days in a row and I feel great. I know the weight loss is slowing down (it has to right?) and that I may see increased mmol/L Week 4/5 but I haven’t felt this good in 6 years. Thanks for all the insight and advice I have gathered by reading other posts 🙂

Good morning Judith, and it is a good morning, I can’t stop smiling at the thought of Bills good news. 🙂
No mozzies last night, a bit too cold for them finally. Nice bright sunny autumn day today. Weather behaving as it’s supposed too lol! Only 17 at the moment but seems on track to reach the 21 forecast.
I’m off soon to take one of my girls to a birthday party so I’m glad it’s not too hot or raining. I’m helping out there, they are going to do some sand art so definitely not an indoor activity. Can you imagine the mess a bunch of 10 yr old girls could make with glue and sand? She’s one very brave Mum!!

Thank you so much, Rose, SunnyB and Allychat. The point about not losing in a uniform way makes sense, and I guess it will be my belly’s turn soon. I think I just need to go away (4 days in Ireland), and keep to the low carb, but not worry about calories, then start afresh next week. I think I’ll keep going for a bit to see what happens. I’m eating no starchy carbs, and am not on any meds, but am prediabetic with glucose intolerance. My hypoglycaemia has been much better while on the diet, so that is the positive I am grateful for, and is enough to keep me going. Thank you for the encouragement – I was feeling quite down about it.

    Good morning not so fatty,
Thanks for that, I’ll remember the name of your endocrinologist. Great to find someone like that. I too have met some fantastic health professionals over the years. We seem to have had nearly parallel working lives. You in mental health, and me for many years as a district nurse. Wonder if our paths ever crossed? Lots of liaising between our two professions over the years, especially when I was working in the inner and very outer southern suburbs!
Hi Sue1234, things ARE going in the right direction for you, however slowly you feel it’s happening. Who knows what inner changes are happening that are not evident yet? It’s good to go back and read the book again, I seem to find something new or refreshed in my mind each time. So glad you’re enjoying your veg now, they give you lots of food for little calorie/ carb cost. Just make sure you’re keeping your fat intake up to encourage your body in the fat burning mode and I’m sure we’ll be hearing of even better results soon 🙂

Frustration this morning. Went out last night to friends, and had lots of starchy vegetables. The plan had been they would come here, and I had a good menu planned – the fish in foil, with a big salad, and a fruit platter after that, with some whipped cream. but for good reasons it was better we went there, and the notice was too short to ask for special food. It was one of those situations when I felt it would be rude not to eat what was on the plate. I’m frustrated because it sets me back in adapting to the diet, and I’m not through the tough stuff yet, so it’s pity to go backwards at this stage.
BUT – lots of positives too
no alcohol, didn’t nibble any of the biccies offered before the meal, and managed to palm off most of the chocolate mousse (and I like chocolate mousse), and having friends you can see at short notice.
next time – I’d do the same. With more warning, and with some friends, I could ask for some low carb offerings.
i’ve a organised dinner out next week, but I’m not too worried about that, as I don’t feel quite the pressure to eat what’s on the plate.
Glad it hasn’t made me feel guilty or down on myself, but will be happy when I’m through these early weeks. And I’m trying to do this in a real life, and in real life things don’t always go to plan. So veggie frittata for breakfast and back to the straight and narrow.

Wow a lot has been going on since I last checked in. Hello everyone. I didn’t realise we had such a diverse bunch on here.

    Day 27 weight 10st 7lbs
Blood sugar 9.9 ( finally going in the right direction)
I read through the book today again, tomorrow I will be at the end of week 4. I had hoped to have lost more weight and had better blood sugar by now but I have to remind myself that I have been a diagnosed Type 2 Diabetic for almost 7 years and if it’s going to take longer for this diet to work for me then so be it – I’m prepared for the long haul! I’m not a fan of veg usually but I have been tucking into it and actually enjoying it.

My downfall has been lack of exercise, but a lot has been happening in my life- I’m aiming to get an exercise routine started on Sunday that I can stick to.👣👣👣🏃🏃🏃🚶🚶🚶

    Hi ann077

can i add my encouragement to the others. you do sound disheartened. 1.5kg is not to be sniffed at. it is 22% of 10% of your staring weight. looking at it that way may help. reading around in the forums it seems that many people find that the weight loss is consistent at all. great idea to come on the forums when you’re feeling despondent about it. then you’ll know you’re not alone going through that. i’m only on day 6 and put on weight in the first few days.
would echo Cherrianne’s and SunnyB’s suggestion to see if you can tweak what you are eating – maybe dropping the amount of carbs will make a difference, and the fat really does make you feel fuller for longer.
a trick i’m trying is to say to myself if it gets really bad i can have a cup of coffee with some cream (measured and counted) in it. I’ve only done it once so far, and it did help, but knowing I’ve got it up my sleeve also seems to help. I usually drink it black, and it has to be decaff after midday, but I do like it with cream, so it feels like a little treat. may well not appeal to you – just hoping it helps to know others are struggling too.
hope it gets easier for you soon

I know how fruatrating it can ve when positive starts seem tio fizzle out. I think one of the messages I took away from the book is that we are all unique and there is clearly much more to the science of weight loss than anyone knows. When i was unstable on my thyroid replacement meds nothing i did was effective for long and while I mostly ate sensibly i would sometimes get ravenously hungry and that would then throw out the whole enterprise. Since I’ve stabilised I read up and decided to do this diet and so far its working for me. Ive worked out that there are a couple of things that make a big difference – keeping of the white starchy carbs entirely, tracking my overall calories & fibre (no less than 23g fibre per day) & making sure Im eating plenty of good fat. (About 25% of my total calorie intake). At end of week 4 Im still learning but have lost 7kg. (Feels like a miracle). Keeping my own notes has been helpful in my learning about what is working for me. Mabe you could look at what you were doing when things were going well and see if there is anything you have been doing differently?? Also mabe check with yr Dr whether any meds you are on might be interfering. Good luck as you continue your journey of wellness.

Hi there all, I’m new to the forum and came here to read up on no weightloss because I am 11 days into the diet and have only lost one pound – yes, you read that right. I have stuck to 800 cals and was eating porridge a lot of days so have cut that today after reading all your comments. BUT an important note to add, as I see no one has touched on it here, is have any of you who are stuck like I am, been weighing themselves on a scale that measures body fat and water percentage, as well as weight? Because I have and even though I’m only one pound down, I have noticed two changes. My water percentage has gone up (I got 48% today) so I know I’m retaining a lot just now for whatever reason, but, more importantly, my BODY FAT percentage is down to 36%. Before the diet, it was at at around 45. I know these scales aren’t entirely accurate but I always use the same ones in the same place, so clearly some good changes are happening in my body, even if I can’t see or feel them yet. And the water is clearly causing a bit of a problem too. I’m sticking with it, remembering that my weight is not the whole picture

    Today’s food:

    Breakfast: Greek yogurt and raspberries

Lunch: Ate this very late, as spent most of the morning and some of the afternoon in bed with a migraine. The only thing I could face when I surfaced was: microwaved egg and cream cheese with nutmeg and raisins – whisked up and cooked until set, it is like bread and butter pudding without the bread! A dollop of creme fraiche on top.

Dinner: Veg curry, two small coconut and besan flour spicy wraps, hard boiled egg, sour cream, onion, lime, tomato and pomegranate salad, with fresh coriander, half an apple

Drinks: water, one tea with milk, buttermint teas, mango and cinnamon tea

    Cals: 845, Carbs: 53

    Hi sos
I feel just like you, was freezing for a couple of days last week and starving too! Then again this week a couple of days cold, however not hungry, I know it is cold for me where I live, in sunny uk! However feeling cold with all the layers on and the central heating up high that’s not just the weather! I think it’s just the way some of us react to rapid(ish) weight loss and nothing to worry about as long as you are losing weight, keep up the good work and I’m sure you will have ups and downs but finally reach your goal, happy dieting.

  • Hi. The book suggests looking up the Low GI guidelines which i understand are 25% protein 25% fat and 50% non starchy carbs. I use My net diary and roughly work to those percentages. I’m finding it way more important to track my fibre ensuring a minimum of 23g and make sure im eating enough good fat. Im religiously only consuming full fat dairy, olive oil etc. I’m near end of week 4 and Have already lost 7kgs and 3cm off my waist. Great sources of fibre – Kumara (orange sweet potato) and prunes.

    Hi net trim

Curious about the ketosis equals high sugar. I’m not aware of that theory. I’d be grateful if you shed some more light. You’re doing bette than me btw. I had a pre-dinner level of 8.4 yesterday and 8.2 tonight. Back up from the 7.0 from the day before – damn! Pressing on though tempted to reach for the metformin again. I’ve not taken any since 16th Feb.

Feel free to tell me to mind my own but curious how many of you re still taking metformin etc or going bareback like me.

Squidgy – just reading your post about going to the gym etc and the high consequent result. I also found out that a really bad time to take a bs level is too soon after a workout – my blood sugar shot up. Make sure you’re well and truly feasted from any vigorous excercise I guess.

Thank you once again bill for your inspiration and help, now (i am holding my cup up and my tiny piece of chocolate) cheers to you and your family, and I will continue to pray for you all as she recovers, God bless, christine

  • Hi M,
I’d say yes, this sounds about right. Although it could be quite hard to match the calories with the carbs sometimes. For example, meat contains no carbs at all but it does have calories. You might find a website called Diet Doctor quite useful. It advocates less than 50g of carbs for ketosis and under 20g for maximum fat burning. Although I started off on the 800 regime, I have switched to only counting carbs and not calories and I aim for 50g of carbs a day. I am losing weight and I know I am still low calorie as I only have two meals a day and they are much smaller than I ever used to have due to my appetite being greatly reduced. Good luck with finding the answers you need.

Hi Richard, yes, that’s when I realised that god must be a man, when I realised men seem to loser faster than women (only joking!) I think it is because men have a higher muscle ratio than women and so a faster metabolism. Well done on your weight loss so far. Personally I don’t think it matters if it is water or not. I’m glad to get rid of anything I don’t need to be carrying around with me, whether its water or fat or anything else. Great job, keep it up.

  • Thank you for your help and comments.
Having read the book cover to cover a couple of times, I understand the need for good quality fat in the diet (nuts, avocado, extra virgin olive oil and coconut oil etc.) It is the amount relative to carbs and protein I want to know, while staying under 800 calories. Does the following sound (about) right to people?
45g carbohydrate (approx. 180 calories) (note this level seems to work for me and definitely in ketosis, even though not losing weight!)
    50g protein (approx. 200 calories)
    45g fat (approx. 405)
    anyone any ideas?

    Hi Malkay

Not sure what your starting point was, but whatever it was I’d say 11lb is considerable. It is a shame the loss isn’t showing in the area you wanted, but as RozyDozy says, our bodies don’t work in a uniform way. I can understand you feeling fed up and frustrated and this is absolutely the place to have a whinge and get it off your chest.

Don’t be too down, you have done well to date and continued weight loss – even slow – is a positive. My suggestion is to be kind to yourself, go away on your break and enjoy it, then come back and start anew. Remember that a big chunk of the battle is mental, so recognise your achievement and focus on the positive.

As for whether you stick with the BSD or swap to the 5:2, it really depends how you feel about it. Maybe a break from the BSD and moving to the 5:2 will help you refocus. But please don’t sabotage your achievement by binging – I’m sure you would regret it.

  • Janet1973 is absolutely right, the BSD not meant to be a low fat diet. It is the fat that keeps you feel sated and pushes the body to burn fat. Obviously you will want to follow the diet prescribed to you Fatty and if it is working for you, all to the good. It is important though, that other following the BSD understand that they should be eating full fat on this diet.

    Hi Malkay,
11 pounds is nothing to be disappointed about. My weight loss has been slow – I am a couple of weeks further on than you and I’ve only just clocked up the magic one stone. While I have lost a bit off my waistline, I seem to have lost a bit more off my backside. And I’ve still got abdominal fat. For what it’s worth, this past week I seem to have managed 5 consecutive days of weight loss – I have lost about 3lbs this week, the most I’ve managed on this diet – I have no idea why. My progress has been a bit down, bouncing up, plateauing, then a bit more loss.
You say you are still losing weight – that’s great. Do you feel more energetic – that’s 11 lbs you are no longer carrying around. Those fat gremlins that have so assiduously built up stockpiles in your body will fight hard to keep hold of the stuff. And our bodies don’t react in a uniform way, losing a nice equal amount all over, at a uniform rate.
Maybe you need to look at what you’ve been doing and see if there are any small adjustments you can make, either to food intake or upping your exercise levels. Have you been stressed about anything, perhaps? Are you on medication?

Don’t apologise for being fed up – we all get like that – and sometimes it’s good to have a whinge but focus on what you have achieved. I’m sure there are other people in a similar situation on these forums who might have something helpful to chip in. But don’t give up. Keep your chin up!
    Take care,
    Rose

Hi, I’m in week 3 and freezing. Wearing several layers and fluffy dressing gown when indoors. I also get flashes of intense chills. I guess it’s my body reacting to this new regime. Actually being cold is preferable to the hot flushes I am used to. I haven’the read about this as a side effect though.

    Hi cat girl,
I am only looking back as far as when I picked up Michaels book. That’s when I started to change.

I have tested myself. Chips were in the table, you know those home made really fat ones, with the most beautiful golden brown colour? Mine for the eating. I was able to have one, didn’t get excited , so moved them on.

I don’t care how long it takes, I will get there.

    How are you doing?

    Love Lucia
