Hi Everyone,
Joanev I started this dietry change ytd and thought to make it easy on myself by following the book’s menu plan.
Wk1, Day1 was lovely. Two new ingredients for me eggplant and pomegranate seeds.
Strangest experience however was this mornings breakfast poached egg sans toast.
So far everything has been lovely .
Planning on joining the 8 week club in 8 weeks time. π

Hello Bill I have been following a lot of your posts, and was so very pleased for the out come of your daughters health scare. I have to say I did send out prays at the time for you all.
But now what lovely news, you have done so well, you do inspire me to keep at this way of eating, thank you for sharing your journey with us all.
All the best to you Bill, from Gail -

All the bestJB

Hi eureka, welcome to the veterans club. You and hubby have acheived a lot in your first 8 weeks. I say ‘first’ because I think like me you don’t want to eat toxic carbs again!! π
-
Hi Penny thanks for input. MRI never been talked about and though its easy to self diagnose and go down the wrong road I can relate to what you are saying. Have given up on GP and treating with MSN which now seems to be kicking in albeit extremely slowly or is it that knee not now under the same pressure as was 6 weeks ago, perhaps a bit of both? Anyway feeling a bit more mobile just in last day or so can only be good. Now over the 28pounds as well woohoo!!! All the best with your own progress

on 4 Apr 2016 at 20:57 in Fast 800Well today has gone really well. The blueberry and green tea shake was OK, I didn’t feel hungry until 12pm. The jewelled peppers were really nice but I used dried herbs that I already had in, it would have been even nicer with fresh herbs, I also enjoyed the lamb aubergine very filling. Let’s hope the rest of the 8 weeks will be as good.

Thanks lucia, say thanks to hubby as well. 162 yaaaaaaay

Hi Veterans
You have certainly earned that accolade after your war of attrition on carbs!
Today I’m finished; that is, just starting!
My 8 weeks was to see what , if anything , I could achieve. I’m 16lbs down, BMI down 28, waist 3.5 inches lost, hips 2 inches, thighs 2.5 inches. FBS 9.5 – 4.8 varying between these figures a lot. I will probably have to loose another 16 lb to give myself half a chance at consistent low BS. I really have to keep very low carbs, probably even ketogenic diet ( fat for fuel) in the end.
I’m happy, you see I relied on my knowledge gained from the 5:2 diet which took me 6 months to loose 2 stone
& my BS were still no better! BUT, I did this 8 weeks by eye! I didn’t count calories or weigh food. I know what 500 calories looks like.
I didn’t eat rice, pasta or sugar. I had potatoes 4 times & bread twice. They spiked me well & truly. I had 4 glasses of wine & 2 beers & 2 Mojitos in 8 weeks & I never finished one of them! I drank water like a fish & one glass of Fever Tree tonic with ice a day. I don’t like tea or coffee
My husband joined me on the diet as his BS were prediabetic. He lost 18 lb & BMI 25, now in 34inch trousers not 38inch! BS fine.
Now I get very serious. I know this is the eating life I (we) want to stay with – can stay with.
I have the knowledge, the power of choice & the great stories & witness you have all borne. This can be done
Too many carbs for type 2 diabetics are TOXIC.

on 4 Apr 2016 at 20:37 in Welcome to the BSDHashimoto thanks for soup ideas – never tried courgette or asparagus in soup so will, and red onion/roast pepper with feta would be good.
FiFiP the reminder about all those cans of beans in the cupboard for rainy days also helped. My leftover veg, bean and chorizo soup was excellent and filling. Clearing out the fridge before starting planning and balancing a bit more carefully …
Lynne – a scarily impressive performance.
Interested – I’m guessing you are using one of those Amazon blood sugar meters with strips?
I am hoping for a quick reversal in blood sugars since I am so newly diagnosed and have convinced myself that its all due to a viral illness, and if so, will not need a device. Beyond that I’d like to severely trim my waist and improve the way my body works to complement general fitness.Strangely on day 1 + 4 [warm up] I am already feeling full of energy, as if something has lifted.
Thanks all for great encouragement to get going.

Hi lucia, great going, girl! I did send it to a few folks, so far only my son has signed. My dad doesn’t really get it. I’m hoping for a few more signatures. It is on my facebook too.
You are making a good job of persuading people to sign. I doff my hat π

Hi gang,
I have just read vic fish 37’s fantastic blog.
I think we all need to get tee shirts made with VIC FISH 37 on. What a role model. What a story, what an achievement.
I am going to read it again tomorrow and have a look at the website.
I hope everyone reads this blog. Thanks vic fish 37 for sharing.

Hi Chicatwist and forum readers, I’ve been going for a 30 minute walk each day – not too strenuous – but there is 1 steep hill to get up. No ill effects and I find it ‘clears the head’ in a mindfulness kind of way.
Hi Cherrianne, How did the spaghetti squash go? When you said you’d purchased it at a road side stall it reminded me that there is some lovely fresh produce available at the various farmers markets. I came across a rockmelon sized zuchinni (courgette) at our local farmers market last month (I’d not come across one before). -
B – full fat yogurt & frozen berries
L – red lentil & pancetta soup
D – roast beef, cauliflower, broccoli, savoy cabbage & gravy

Thanks eureka. The tech team are looking at putting a sticky on it. The more newbies you can direct there the better! I keep posting comments to try and keep it near the top of the ‘recent topics’.

I hope you’re not in bed poorly. There isn’t a Sainsbury’s where I live. I’ve looked again at the packet and they swell up double so I’ll put them in to soak Wednesday night ready to make chilli on Thursday.

Blood sugar 9.0 (so still pretty good)Looks like I might be on the diet 8 months rather than 8 weeks at this rate. ππ

Hi Karra
Sorry to hear you’re struggling. My guess is you need to increase your fat. I have 35-50g a day. We all struggle at first with the idea of eating fat after all the anti fat propaganda but now I realise Fat is Our Friend. !!π You can put butter or olive oil on your veg, much healthier than pork scratchings, eat full fat dairy, especially FF Greek yogurt, the fat on meat, plenty of nuts and seeds.
Re the liquid intake. 10 cups or glasses a day is 2.8 litres. I have 5 cups of tea and 5 glasses of water spread out over the day. ( that’s about one every hour and a half on average)
You could have a look at Jenny Ruhls book ‘low carb problems solved’ (Β£3 on kindle) which I’ve found very useful.
BTW Jimbob on another thread managed to lose ok while immobilised with a bad knee, and a lot of other people don’t do much exercise but have lost the weight, so maybe so much exercise isn’t necessary!
Best of luck- there will be a solution.

Oh yes dearbecks FULL FAT only please!!!! π
It took me two weeks go ditch the low fat sweetener filled rubbish yoghurt. We’ve had decades of being brainwashed into eating low fat π

on 4 Apr 2016 at 19:26 in Welcome to the BSDHi JWS, welcome.
I’m in my 16th week on BSD. As a type 2 diabetic I’m checking my fasting blood sugar each morning. Also weighing each morning.
To date I’ve lost 44 pounds. Like many others I’m staying on 800 calories longer term as I have more weight to lose.

Hi I completed the 8 weeks on 21st March and since then had an hbA1c result of 39! I had been diagnosed as a Tyoe 2 in Dec 2014 with an hbA1c of 93, I lost weight and started exercising in 2015 but couldn’t get below 10st. My BS was largely under control but I was unhappy taking meds and although I was aware of the research at Newcastle Uni I couldn’t find any support for it locally and was advised again extreme measures. When the BS diet book was published I determined to try it and I have found it a brilliant opportunity to get this horrible disease under control. I haven’t looked back since – I sailed through the 8 weeks, made sure that I ate properly and did 10,000 steps most days. I had good nourishing food – I adapted some of the Hairy Dieters’ recipes. I can honestly say that I wasn’t hungry at all. I am now off medication and am finding that I can manage my blood sugar levels back when I have had some lapses. Thank you Michael, it has been such a life changing experience and so empowering. I feel so privileged to have the chance to change my life for the better

Copying is allowed and insisted upon!
Just a suggestion re: rewards, you may want to break them down into smaller bits, so the next reward doesn’t seem so far away. I find that this keeps me motivated. It doesn’t have to be anything big or expensive (some examples: painting your nails a fun colour, re-reading an old favourite, I love the new socks idea). The only hard and fast rule is that the reward CANNOT be FOOD.
But you all knew that anyway π
You all are inspiring and amazing!
Cheers,
Deb

Thank you to all that responded to my post, you’ve all been a big help and cheered me on to do even more exercise, although Bill you may be right with not taking in enough fats. I will go online and check out HIGH FAT foods, that might be what my body is needing. I thought I was eating too much fats with the eggs, cheese, yoghurt and meat, but it doesn’t look like it. I will give that a try for the last few days of this week and see how it goes. I admit I was scared to eat too much fat what with being told over the years to cut back on fats.
What about eating Pork Scratchings? Any thoughts on these. Here are the nutrional info from the back of a pack.
Per 80g pack 541 cal
Fat 47.2g
of which is saturates 16.8
Carbs 2.8g
of which is sugars <0.1g
Protein 26.8g
Salt 0.43gI’m not talking a whole pack in one day, but perhaps half a pack???
Thanks Eureka, I will have a look at that site you linked.
Yes unfortunately tree-peony I am type 2, it is inherited from my family heritage. I am a North American Indian, and it runs in my biological family, I was finally diagnosed with it in 2011 and have been on Metformin, which they had to change to the slow release form of it, have tried Glicazide which affected my eyesight, and I refused to take statins for my cholesterol, so this diet has to work for me or else.
hugs

Hi Christine
You ve done so well.
Penny -
Hi jimbob
Welcome to the veterans club!
You ve done well. That pound doesn’t matter!
Re your kilt. When you’ve reached the weight you want you could get it altered.
And re your knee- hope this isn’t interfering- but if you haven’t had one you need a diagnosis from an MRI scan. I had that and it turned out to be a torn miniscus. It’s very important NOT to walk if you have that. If it’s arthritis then walking is good. Only an MRI can tell which it us. I was misdiagnosed by the GP ( who just guessed arthritis) but luckily had read up on the internet beforehand. The amount of pain youre having sounds like it could be a torn miniscus, which can heal if rested for quite a few weeks. Otherwise it might not.
Best of luck

Absolutely full fat yoghurt is the way to go, and your vanilla should be fine. On this programme, fat free anything is BANNED!

Well done Kathy! Full fat yoghurt is just the business for breakfast isn’t it?

Beginning of week 2 lost 4lbs in the first week, which I am pleased with. Do not feel hungry at all and enjoy my yoghurt and berries for breakfast.
-
First day today!
L – salad with a bit of leftover pork from yesterday’s roast
D – trout fillet with minty crushed peas, carrots & baby corn
2 apples & a pear. Have some yogurt & strawberries later if we want. I have put a tiny drop of vanilla extract into the yogurt……is that allowed?! Also I see most people have full fat yogurt, I bought fat free yesterday.
