    Thanks Verano,

I aim to continue avoiding all bread, pasta, rice and potato, using the ‘replacements’ that I really enjoy! I won’t be eating cake or biscuits and will continue to have Greek style live yoghurt with a very few berries for a ‘dessert’ unless we are out to eat and crème brûlée is on the menu! (I used to love sticky toffee etc but think it will be far too sweet now!)
I am still checking my weight, and intend to keep at roughly the same weight I am now, but I have wondered how to ensure the diabetes is under control. I hadn’t thought about finger prick… but that is a very good plan! Do you buy over the counter? What is the recognised range?
Hope you have had a brilliant trip to Portugal, wishing you a very happy and healthy 2025!
I am where I am thanks to yourself and Sunshine-girl. I think I would have failed if it weren’t for your tips and encouragement. I only hope my success will help someone else!

welcome on board Verano! Good to have you cruising with us. We have crossed paths for many years on the forum. I fasted for 24 hours today. Was aiming for 36 but i felt cold and hungry so bailed out at 24 hours. I knew it would be difficult after Christmas. I have cut out the carbs so next Mondays fast might be easier. Tomorrow I’ll be eating less than usual and being mindful of portion size and sticking to BSD friendly choices. It occurred to me in bed this morning that I don’t want to be trying to lose my excess weight forever! I need to get it done this year and maintain. Therefore it am hoping to knuckle down and get the job done. Yowser and Pootle you proved it can be done in a few months. I’m on it x

Oh a cruise!!! My favourite! I’d love to join you on the high seas, as long as they aren’t too rough!

2025 is my year for getting serious again. My plan is still being formulated but I think I’ll be building ‘good habits’ bit by bit. I have my water filter jug, my meditation app, my chair yoga YouTube videos and after all these years I think I know about ‘diet’!

Anyway, I’d love to join your journey and hopefully take inspiration from Yowzer … no pressure!

Pootle it is absolutely possible to remain in remission in the long term. I have for nearly 8 years now drug free.

I work it in a different way to AngS. I tend to stick to low carb without counting by not eating the really ‘carby’ stuff like bread, potatoes, rice and pasta for 90-95% of the time. I don’t eat cakes, desserts or sweets apart from 70%+ chocolate. But when we go away I do indulge in a few spoons of my favourite desserts or the odd piece of decent bread with cheese etc. I’ve found that my tastes have changed so much that the food/drinks that I enjoyed 8 years or so ago are now just too sweet.

My HbA1c has never gone over 40 in all those years. So I don’t ’cut down’ to get my BS back into control it usually is ok. I do finger prick every few days or so and I know that if my reading is 6.5 or less then all is fine. If it goes above 7 then I’m extra careful for a few days. But that’s just my ‘norm’ yours may be different.

Pootle you will find ‘your’ way but it is totally ‘doable’. Blood Sugar can be kept in control without total deprivation you just have to find the best ‘way’ for yourself.

    Good evening.

Have no idea why but I’ve not received any posts lately. Anyway I’ve caught up now. Sorry to hear about your cat s-g. It’s always very sad when we lose a pet. Also sorry to hear about your colds….get well soon.

Welcome to our new starters. Some of my food swaps are courgetti for pasta and finely sliced green beans or tender-stem broccoli as a base for curry or bolognese.

We are now coming home two days early, on Thursday instead of Saturday but I’m yet to make a proper ‘plan’. I think I’m going to opt for ‘building habits’. I have my meditation app, I have some chair yoga YouTube videos, I have my water filter jug and I more or less know what to eat after all these years! So my plan is to build a structure to incorporate all my ‘healthy’ habits into each day, day by day until they become second nature.

Sort of looking forward to getting weighed on Friday and starting from there. I will need to stock the fridge etc so a good time to pile up on all the salads and vegetables. I also am planning on reducing meat meals to maybe two a week, with two chicken and fish for the rest. I love fish so it shouldn’t be too much of a problem.

Really looking forward to getting back into the ‘swing’ of things. S-g not sure when your cruise is but we leave on April 15th for a three week trip with a 10 day cruise sandwiched between to hotel stays. I really want to buy new clothes, in a smaller size, for that trip! Your red jumpsuit sounds beautiful … hopefully I will fit into some new stuff too!

Pootle, I’m sure when the cats realise you don’t present a threat and represent food, they’ll relent.

For me, today has been one of those days where there has been no stand out positive …. and it is on days like that it’s important to identify at least one …. so here goes …. (long think💭🤔💭)
📲 had a pleasant phone catch up with a Turkish friend …. yes, that was a definite positive 🙂.

What positive can you find in your day?

Michael Mosley will always be sadly missed. He was a brilliant doctor and communicator. His books helped me reverse my Type 2 in 2017 and I still manage it today. If it creeps up again ( as it may well do if you eat too many carbs), I go back onto a few of my favourite MM recipes for a couple of weeks to reverse it again. So have been Metformin free since 2017.

Well done all of you who are still battling with your HbA1c results being 48 or more. Don’t give up! I reversed my Type 2 back in November 2017 and have stayed in Remission most of the time up to now (January 2025). I still have regular blood checks every 6 months. If my HbA1c is 48, I refuse Metformin and tell the nurse I know what to do. She says she’ll take more blood in 3 months. So I go back on the MM 8-week diet sometimes, or just reduce my carbs, desserts and fruit intake for a few weeks. Have another blood test 3 months later and it has always gone back down to around 45/46. Once you know how you should be eating, it’s easy to manage it. Good luck everyone. Keep that determined mindset.

Thanks for the tip about the Glucose Goddess,Margaret. She is French but does a lot of her material in English and speaks good sense.
I’m back on track and restarting my fasting schedule. ..alternate days. It works on the days I have a pilates or yoga class as I can’t do anything when I have eaten. I get cold though so need my hot water bottle !
Wishing everyone a great week. Take care if you have snow or icy conditions. Just damp and a bit grey here xx

There is also another tv programme on nutrition on Channel 4 at 8-0pm on Tuesday. It’s called Eat Smart Secrets of the Glucose Goddess with a French scientist Jessie Inchauspé. She is apparently well known on tv in France.

Hi Pootle …. yes, we all have different tastes and preferences and so make little adjustments to make the BSD principles work for us. Those of us with a partner prepared to be flexible and supportive are lucky, like your OH mine is happy to eat as I do, with the occasional addition of more carby stuff.

With regard to raising cals but not carbs, try adding in a little more good fat, like olive oil for instance.

The three stray, ‘feral’ cats reappeared for food after missing yesterday. Sheltering in the hay barn from the rain, they were very cosy. Still won’t come for the food whilst I remain by it, but no longer wait for me to leave completely! 🐈🐈‍⬛🐈‍⬛
I took the Christmas flowers out of the church. They have lasted brilliantly as I arranged them on the 6th December and I now have the month old red carnations in a vase on my kitchen windowsill! A month old and still going strong! 💐

    Good evening all,

    Interesting how we all seem to use the diet in different ways. I prepare foods that I like, but have used portion control (weighing everything) and the absence of the ‘bad’ carbs to achieve my goals. I have adapted a number of recipes from the BSD book and Fast 800 & BSD cookery books , cutting out all the spice. (I really hate spiced food…I don’t even like too much ground black pepper..one grind is enough!) as well as my usual recipes! Some of my favourites are;
My variation of bolognaise served with courgetti.
Hake on a stick (cubes of hake wrapped in streaky bacon) grilled and served with cauliflower rice and lemon.
    Lamb hotpot from the book.
Chicken and chorizo (I do like garlic, but have to be careful which chorizo I buy, so it doesn’t have chilli!) roasted thighs with butternut squash.
Cottage pie with a cauliflower mash topping.
Roasted med veg from the book.
Veg soup (with home made stock).
Brazil nut and pear chocolate brownies (From the book)
    Etc Etc.
I think I am very fortunate that my husband has agreed to eat the same as I do…although I do give him toast, potato and rice when appropriate and I feel like it! 😂
I am finding the maintenance almost more difficult than being on the 800 calories to lose weight! The more I eat, the more I want!! 😩
I still need to avoid the carbs, as I am diabetic in remission, but am finding it hard to up calories/portion sizes without adding carbs from vegetables. I don’t want to up the protein too much so I can keep a balance!

So here’s to our group support..any advice gratefully received!
    xx

Hi everyone and good to see all the recent posts.

Fasting is not something I tend to do personally, but I know others on various forums have used it for specific purposes along the way – I’m thinking for example of our old friend JGwen who has done a lot of research on using fasting to create autophagy, to help renew the body’s cells. And MIXnMATCH is giving it a careful try for the reasons she describes, and is not encouraging others to do likewise. So let us know how you get on!

Above all I agree with YOWZER that this thread is supposed to be a supportive and encouraging environment and let’s keep it that way. And yes, if one of our number declared they were going to fast for an indefinite period with no particular purpose in mind and no thought or care as to their general health and wellbeing I’m sure there would be many of us who would kindly suggest that would not be a good idea. But kindness is the key, and I personally don’t think words like “disgusting” have any place here.

On a happier note, MARIET I was fascinated to hear about your water lizards. And hope the dog doesn’t get one! I spent some time in Mexico last summer and it was lovely to see the iguanas basking in the sun without a care in the world. And we did see smaller specimens inside too. At the time I assumed they were newts, but maybe they were water lizards too? Must Google it!

Anyway, sadly no sun here now and I’m about to tog up to take my dog out in the pouring rain. Can’t put it off any longer so here goes.

Love and best wishes to everyone on here, and hope that you all have a productive week in every day. DCT xx

Thank you all for the warm welcome, it’s a tough time with colds and the flu.
Wendy, it’s great you have a goal and I hear you about costs, my mum usually heads to the canaries for a month, this January it’s cost double last year, and it’s tough to justify the health benefits but it’s much more than financial at this time of the year.
SG sorry to hear about your poor cat, we have dogs and I found life can turn on a penny so sudden that you’d get whiplash if you thought about it, from healthy to buried before we can process it. I bet you gave them a wonderful life which is to be celebrated.
Thanks Sunny, I don’t have allergies, food intolerance or anything, I’m just a creature of habit, and found some of the recipes not appealing. My GP told me to cut back on eggs, and I’m reasonably happy to eat the same thing every day, I love cooking so spicy bean soups, chili anything like that. I have the fast 800 recipe book and have not checked out recipes in the main book yet.
I’m looking forward to being part of this community and look forward to interacting with you all.

Let me be clear, I am trying this only as I have seen sources that suggest this length of fast has potential extreme health benefits as an occasional tool and as I am very good now at listening to my body I will of course stop if it feels no good. I am very fat adapted after years of BSD style diet so I feel almost no discomfort during my more regular 36 hour fasts and the occasional 5 day fasting mimicking diets which this one is replacing as I enter this new year and I do believe that this will benefit me along with subsequent careful eating using BSD WOE principles back to a suitable weight this year. This fast is not for weight loss per se. It is also in no way intended to be a punishment, or advice or a challenge for anyone else. This is my way of recommitting to my healthy future in the midst of the worlds own challenges as they are thrown at me.

California Girl, I wouldn’t do it myself but there are reputable sources that do recommend fasting and even BSD recommends intermittent fasting (short term). Jason Fung recommends no longer than 14 days.

I agree regarding the risks of refeeding syndrome afterwards.

I am just going to say something less than perfect here, WHY WHY WHY would a week long fast be something good or something to be in awe of? It is dangerous and stupid and would require careful eating after it is over to avoid the danger that comes from eating at the end of a long fast.
This is NOT the BSD!!! This does not reflect BSD values.
This is really stupid and no one should support this. It is not healthful or helpful.
If you ate too much over the holiday, get yourself back on the straight and narrow, but don’t punish yourself with a seven to ten day fast. This is just disgusting.

Wow Mixnmatch, that’s a long fast. I’m in awe of anyone who can fast so long. The longest I ever did was 36hrs which I used to do as teenager as a means of keeping my weight down (lifelong obsession….) I hope you and CC both get the results you’re hoping for.
I have been keeping low carb (with one glass of dry sparkling wine, 0.8 g carb) but sadly no result on the scales as yet. I am sure it will come, early days yet. It’s high summer here and we are having a very hot few days so possibly retaining some fluid.
It’s so hot I have had an influx of little (8-9inch) water lizards invading the house where it’s a bit cooler. They hide under the fridge and when they’re cool again they take themselves outside again, through the dog flap in the screen door. I don’t mind them, they are regular summer visitors each year, but my little dog regards them as a source of sport and I live in fear she’ll catch one someday. Neither she nor I would know what to do with them!

You don’t have to be perfect to be good enough with the BSD. If you just start again, you don’t even have to do hard and long fasts, which are very hard on the body.
Just start again. 800 calories (more or less) and as few carbs as you can manage (and those veggies) and it will quickly come right. It is easier to just stay the course than to try to atone for the holiday.
Just start again. It will come right.

I will be attempting my first 7-10 day water fast starting Monday as a means to put the excesses of the holiday behind me! Wish me luck! Slight modifications to the classic water only fast, one multivitamin and one omega 3 oil supplement per day, one marmite or miso soup a day (probably lunch) and unlimited herb/green tea or rooibos without milk.

Hoping to deal firmly with any carb monster antics and get ready for another attack on excess weight in January and February. Final target by the end of 2025 is a further 4 stone from my current overweight status. Will keep you informed how it is going.

Casey, well done on the loss. I’m with you on the simple swaps, like green beans or broccoli instead of pasta for instance. My main hack though, is to use various herbs and spices, so that I can swap up flavours on simple dishes that are prepared quite frequently.
Just recently rediscovered shrikand … strained yogurt with saffron, a little cream, ground cardamom and nuts. It’s usually sweetened, but I tend to make it without any sweeting agent. Have made a black dal dish today, had planned to have some tonight but I’m not really hungry, so will save it for tomorrow now.

SG, sorry you snd your hubby are suffering, hope you’ll both soon be back to fitness.

  • Just jumping with a lunch idea. My favourite soup is Spanish chorio and chickpea soup. If you are veggie you can leave out the chorizo and just add chilli for flavour. It is in the BSD book – not the recipe book. Or I can repeat it here.

Welcome MrsKelly, and to those not feeling great I hope you are soon on the mend.

Quite chuffed that I managed a small loss over Christmas yet don’t really feel I have missed out too much on the lovely food that’s been around. I will be glad when someone else finishes the Christmas cake though so it’s not there waving at me!

Have been freezer-meal-prepping a bit today to hopefully make the next few weeks easier. Trying to make up low-ish carb, under 500 cal evening meals that can be put with green veg instead of a carby option. It also keeps me busy and away from baking which is no bad thing.

MrsK – I found some quite good low carb inspo on the good food site. Just made a chicken and chorizo ragu to freeze ahead, that comes in about 16g carbs and 480 cals per portion. Looks quite decadent with its sun dried tomatoes and stuff. I think really tho the most sustainable meals I have are the things that have come from simple swaps like bolognese without the pasta.
I too would love to hear of recipe ideas from others. My lunches particularly have been very dull and just before Christmas I was feeling a bit egged-out!

  • Just a quick hello to MrsKelly and to everyone else who is back with us.

No real news today except we are both full of cold and keeping each other awake with our hacking coughs. Can only believe we will feel better as each day goes by.

    Have a good weekend.

A warm welcome to MrsKelly, good to have you join us. We’ll be more than happy to offer support and where we can, some advice too. You say you’re struggling with finding food you like … could you tell us if you had allergies, intolerances or just plain aversions to anything in particular? Guessing as you grown some if your own food, veg is not the issue. Anyway, we’ll get to know you and try our best to help keep you wurh us on the BSD way of eating.

Margaret, well done on the loss … a definite plus with festive temptations. Sorry you’re under par but hopefully you’ll be firing on all cylinders again soon. The kefir sounds like a good idea, think I should get back to using some of that myself and maybe making some fermented veg too.

I’ve nothing much to report, no further discard but no gain either. Post-stomach bug, I’ve still no real appetite, but the downside of that is a tenancy to eat odd things at odd times as and when I fancy something. Haven’t eaten a proper meal in over a week now.

Hope you all have a good BSD weekend.

    Hello Everyone
As i will be fasting from Sunday PM to Tuesday AM every week I need to start to eliminate the Christmas carbs from my diet this weekend to give me any chance of success. Going cold turkey won’t be easy so today and tomorrow in preparation for my fast I am being extra vigilant and cutting out all the bad things I’ve been eating during the festive season. My carb monster is already growling at me to feed him but I am determined to get back in control. I have a plan to drink plenty of water, peppermint tea and eat plenty of protein this weekend with eggs, cottage cheese and nuts at the ready. My body is swollen and sluggish as a result of my recent poor choices. Ive enjoyed the festive season but I can’t continue to eat this way. I’ve checked my blood sugar this morning and it is in the normal range so my plan is to keep my blood sugar low. I read a great quote which said it’s not what you eat between Christmas and New Year it’s what you eat between New Year and Christmas so today is Day 1 for me and im ready! This next few days will be the hardest whilst im ridding myself of the carbs but after a few days my carb monster will be back in his cage and the key will be thrown overboard!
    Have a good weekend everyone.

Hello everyone and it is my first weigh this year & I have lost two pounds in weight. I’m pleased with losing some weight rather than gaining more but I have now got at least two stone to lose & I am still feeling below par since Christmas with a sore stomach & a slightly sore throat. I think my digestive system & body are still rebelling from my off piste eating so I suppose it’s not really surprising that my body prefers low carb eating & is now unhappy. However all the Christmas food temptations are now gone & I am back preparing fresh food & vegetables with some left over ratatouille waiting to be eaten with steak tonight for supper & I will make prawn , courgette & leek soup for lunch. I am also having daily kefir again to boost my inner biome hoping to make my gut happy😀
Good luck everyone with getting back on track we can do this & all have a positive January👍

Hi Californiagirl, I get my protein from some fish and legumes and nuts. It is difficult to eat enough and keep carbs and calories down.

Articfox, thank you for your useful reply, I have never heard of lupine beans, I’m off to google them, maybe in Uk they have another name. I’ll have to try your bread suggestion, thanks for your support ladies.

Hi All, I’m here to get healthy and loose weight. I feel great on the BSD and went off it in October whilst on holiday and have not got back on track due to loosing my job. Food has always been a comfort to me and I’m here to shake that codependency off. I bought the recipe book because I kept borrowing it from the library as it’s a great resource but I’m planning my meals now and am struggling to find food I like so I came here for ideas to help me through.
A bit about me, I’m 56 and struggling with my mobility which is really embarrassing and I’m hoping once I get back on BSD I will feel great and with the new year, feel motivated as I am through with making excuses.
I love to cook and bake and we grow some of our own food, so I know I’m going to rock this new way of living for me, I’m hoping to get a little support along the way and gain from all the great advice here.

    Hi Lycatu,
Fellow pescatarian here. I used to eat eggs, but have had to give them up recently after going on an elimination diet to figure out what was causing stomach issues and systemic inflammation. I’ve also had to go gluten free as well. I was eating the odd slice of rye bread as it didn’t spike my blood sugar as much as wheat (I know that from doing experiments while wearing a continuous glucose monitor). I was really struggling with the idea of giving that up, but now that I have and am eating different foods, I’m not really missing it.
It can be harder for us to get enough protein when we don’t eat what the others do. I have lots of nuts and seeds though, including hemp seeds which are very low carb. Chia, pumpkin seeds and flax (linseed) are good ones too. I eat a couple of Brazil nuts daily for selenium. You can search for the broccoli sandwich bread in the recipes section of this site. The recipe uses eggs, but I just made it without by using ground linseed and a 1/4 cup of chia seed mixed with a bit of water instead of the almond flour and grated cheese instead of the eggs, and it held together fine. In fact, I think it was even tastier and more bread-like!
There are recipes for seed crackers too, which might help. I’m thinking of trying to make some as I really am missing crunch.
Other great low carb proteins are cottage cheese, full fat greek yogurt or skyr, and of course all the different kinds of fish. I like to have tinned mackerel or sardines on salad, or on the broccoli sandwich bread.
Oh, and I have also rediscovered lupini beans as a very low carb legume. I still have lentils, chickpeas and other beans on occassion, but am using the lupini beans in most recipes now as they are much lower carb.
Hopefully that gives you some ideas!

    Hi Lycatu,
Sounds like you have made a good start. Keep cutting down on the carbohydrates. Sunshine girl is right, skip the bread and the wrap — they are simple carbs and the worst for blood sugar control.
It sounds as though you might be very low on protein — that is a great thing to focus on and make sure you get enough. If you don’t eat meat or eggs, how do you get your protein?

Lycatu, don’t beat yourself up, take it slowly and you will get there. You say if you didnt count the carbs in veg you would get to 50g, it is only veg that contains carbs. There are no or very few carbs in meat and dairy. If you dont eat meat do you eat eggs. cheese, yoghurt etc. Please cut out the biscuits and wraps as obvious culprits and stay away from white carbs like pots, bread, rice, pasta and processed foods, plus all the obvious sugars. If you cant manage to cut out completely then at least you are doing some good keeping low – 98g is a start.

Thank you for your prompt reply, Sunshine-girl.
I know I eat too many carbs, quite honestly, I could live on bread alone, however, I have cut down considerably, but find it hard to get down to 50 g or less.. today I have hit 98g, but the only real “carby” thing was a tortilla wrap . The rest (apart from a biscuit) came from various veg ( not potatoes) and lentils. If I didn’t count the carbs in veg I would be nearer 50g. I don’t eat meat, and only limited amounts of fish, purely to get protein and omega oils. I don’t eat eggs.
I have another 7-10lbs to lose to get to my ideal weight. But my main concern is diabetes.
I will have to try harder.
