Awwwwwww don’t cry… What phone do you have? Because it is compatible with…’Android devices equipped with Bluetooth 4.0 and running Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean) or later.’ Which means absolutely bugger all to me.

On the same page at the bottom, you can use the app without a Up wristband, but it seems this is via newer phones https://jawbone.com/support/articles/000011529/device-compatibility

I didn’t know about the above.

  • Yes, try an app – I do manage with MyFitnessPal, which I find helpful – it shows you all sorts of interesting things about the makeup of the food.

If you can keep your grams of carbs under 50g per day, that does help with weight loss.

Re nuts – just to let you know, it’s not the carbs which are the problem but the calories. For instance 25g of mixed nuts (which is not really a lot, probably c 20 – 22 nuts) is 166 calories, 1 carb, 16g fat. The fat isn’t a problem, on BSD full fat is good and it fills you up. But if you’ve only got 800 calories to play with, do use nuts in moderation!!

    🙂

    Thanks Lucky,

Hi Imogen, I couldn’t install the software on my husband’s Kindle Fire (the newer cheaper smaller one than the one out a few years ago) and neither would it go on his Samsung Android phone. So, as I had mine synced to my iPad, I’ve had to sync his to my iPod shuffle. So I can only comment on Apple, I don’t know what Janey or Eps have their app on.

Ok BSDers and fitness tracker experts🙋… Can anyone tell me if I can use a jawbone with a Kindle HP Fire? Could use the ‘incentive’ (healthy competition??) that a tracker would bring…but don’t want to have to buy another piece of tech or a new phone to run it!!!

    Thanks

    Hi Winifred,welcome and good luck!…
…just my thoughts to add to the host of ideasalready here for you!
I wasnt a lover of green veg two weeks ago..i seem to be addicted to it now!
Being able to put some delicious grass fed proper butter on them helps…
and Birds Eye do veggy steam-bags..stick in the microwave and 3 mins later theyre ready with no steamy kitchen or pongy cabbagey smell. They do a variety of mixes,my favourite is green medley: broc, peas, beans with a hint of garlic.
As for salad, i wasnt a big fan either but ive just had a load of lambs lettuce, watercress, red onion and celery with my dindins..its so nourishing, packed with vits and mins,so for the sake of good health if nothing else, tuck in..you’ll be glowing! 😋 Xx

Haha, sorry Janet, we bad… I think that’s the point, we don’t get anything done. Because of this thread 🙂

I’ve been a good girl 🙂 Stuck to plan. Did housework. Janey and Timmy, however… *shakes head* Terrible. Terrible. Innuendo laden filth.

90 Emails? This is a slow day, Janet. Really slow actually. Would have been 390 if it was Tokyo’s day off 😉 jk Tokyo lyl lol x

Hey Tokyo! Presume you’ve survived the battle of the bus driver today?! You’ve missed all the excitement with Timmy’s yoghurt. Don’t worry though, he’s whipping up another batch tonight 😆😆😆😆

Ooh another ‘Up Friend’ to add to the list! Which one did you go for??

Lentil simmering. Vindaloo is cooked to perfection. Just got to get to grips with a courgette and I’ll be ready for curry fest 😳

No, it was the tomato puree that I put in to counter the appalling taste, texture and lack of spice.

Do it!!! That’s what I did on Saturday, walked around the perimeter of Chester RUFC a few times because I’d been sat in the car. It’s amazing how all these steps add up. Even hubby pushed himself today, he’s got his set at 4000 at the mo, which isn’t great but it’s better than it has been for a long time as he’s had a lot of ill health. Plus, he’s exceeded it every day, in all fairness. Just keep edging it up a few hundred every couple of days and he’ll get there in the end. It does make you think about how much (or how little) you actually move. I’m on 5491 for today so far, which isn’t fantastic but it’s better than nothing.

Yayyyyyy Tokyo! Hellooooooooooooooo dear. I was hardly here myself, cleaning day today as little one is 10 tomorrow. Not so little one. So wanted house tidy for the swarm of visitors. I wonder if I’ll be able to resist the cake? I’ve done ok so far, but not going out and buying yourself a cake, is different to being faced with a cake, isn’t it? I might defrost a chocolate fairy cake and have it warmed with one scoop of Oppo on top so I don’t feel like I’m missing out. That would be double decadence because the cakes were lovely too, you wouldn’t be able to tell that either were ‘good for you’. Both would be just over 180 calories. Mind boggled. I’m already foregoing the takeaway (and no, I’m not paying for a bloody loose burger by throwing the bun, I can do that for myself at home, cheaper! 😉 )

Tea was good, a Hemsley bap, toasted with poached egg on top, bacon medallions, waitrose pork sausage and some plum tomatoes.

Yayyyyy looking forward to ‘Challenge Tokyo’ then 😉 Anything that encourages us to move more has to be good. And if that means competing, then so be it .

    Hi

I use the fatsecret app and that allows you calculate carbs etc in cups, grams, ounces etc and is really good. Lots of people use myfitnesspal but I just couldn’t get to grips with it!

Think you may just have to watch the calories with nuts. Very good for you but only in small portions!

    Good luck

I am just getting started myself. am 20 kg overweight and blood sugars and pressure slightly above normal. Read the books, combed through the website, and am starting with 2/5 for a few weeks to get my body used to it. 2 days in my numbers are already getting better and have decreased insulin slightly. You can do it too. Go for the hope, not the fear and you will have made a choice in your own favor.

Frog count it as a win that you got back on plan after only 2 days off plan. That’s better than I’ve done in the past of letting it go for a few weeks, or just not getting back on plan. LOL I had to laugh about putting it in kitty litter, I have not heard that one before. 🙂 RIP pedometer. 🙂

The only alert I have on is the one when I reach my 10,000 steps, so that goes off like… never. Oh, and one to tell me to go to bed at 10 every night. I just laugh. I think you can set it to buzz to wake you up gently. Not as harsh as an alarm clock.

Oh that sounds divine Janey. I need the peanut curry recipe remember. Can’t even think about cashew curry after the pink one. I haven’t had a curry night for months. If I’ve had one this year. I don’t think I have. But I do stupid things like have 19 for curry. I’m usually too drunk to remember eating mine by the time I’ve sat down (last) with it.

Yep, it’s completely alien and bizarre but I’ll take it. They’re probably all after something 😀 I do actually call them the minions lol.

    Thank you all.
Well, here I am again having fallen into the ditch big time and put on weight.
Blame it entirely on being in Holland for a week and just not being able to resist their wonderful, but dear me, so fattening food. Chips with mayonnaise, glorious ice creams etc. TUT.
I was fine whilst in Prague etc as did so much walking weight stayed steady, but now. Woe is me.
Anyway, back to the drawing board and to eating healthily and cutting bread, Brie etc.
Excuse not to do much exercise, temps pushing 40, so trifle warm. Doggies disgruntled as have curtailed their walks to 15/20 mins max. Please don’t say Go swimming. If you saw me in my bathing costume you would shudder, as I do.
    Off we go again. X

Nice pic on your ‘Up’ Lucky. I figured you were the girl as a man in lipstick is not right (wait for Timmy’s input!)

My Jawbone just buzzed to nag me to get up off my fat a***. That’s endearing today. Could be annoying tomorrow and beyond!

Off home shortly to fight my way through the slow cooked funk of vindaloo that is permeating the entire downstairs. Cats have probably decamped outside… I’m considering side dishes. Lentil dahl most definitely. Maybe a cashew curry (pimping the peanut one seeing as I bought the European cashew surplus for some reason). OR a courgette foogath seeing as my fridge is full of the little green blighters…

    And Lucky wraps. Of course.

I couldn’t resist, I had to step on the scale this morning, I just felt smaller. 🙂 I’m at 8.6 lbs lost since my start last week – not bad for 8 days. I’ve been eating a lot of salads the last few days, I don’t know if that’s the help or if I’m just getting into the groove. Energy is increasing too.

Welcome back RPM — sounds like you have been trying to get going for a couple of months — well NOW would be a good time to really commit — just ease into it slowly, you don’t need to do 800 calories at first and low carb, you can work your numbers down over a week or two. I think our brains get on board the train before our bodies even catch a cab to the station — be gentle to yourself but start now and just keep going. You might have hard days (I can recall a nasty few!) but don’t quit because it will get easier and easier and you will find yourself in a new head-space in just a few weeks. If cooking is hard, stick with easy foods, simple meals worked best for me anyway (oven roasted chicken, steamed veg, that kind of thing). Eat fat, whole fat yogurt, cream, cheese, nuts, butter (all in tiny amounts of course!) and that will help immensely — you are moving from carbs to fat in your metabolism — get a copy of Gary Taubes book “Why we get Fat” — great primer on carbs/fat/new research. Keep us posted. We are rooting for you!

And oh. Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! I am not on a downer! Has the curse been broken??? Everyone, and I mean from the large bone idle student to the baby has pitched in and cleaned, hoovered, polished, wiped, decluttered from top to bottom today. Without complaint. So, that’s left me feeling rather jolly.

Oh I see Timmy, duh, of course. Didn’t put two and two together. Heard hot wax, thought immediately of something filthy. So unlike me. My bad.

Hi Leeanne, on the good news front, I found that my hair started to grow like crazy around the 8 week mark — in fact, there was so many new baby hairs that I looked fuzzy for a bit! My hairdresser noticed too — it was sort of funny. I have continued on the diet for 24 weeks — definitely not as strictly as I have moved forward but still more or less on track (I got to a good weight around the end of week 16). My hair loss has slowed and all those little baby hairs have now gotten long enough to lay down properly on my head, thank goodness no longer look like a fuzzy creature. I definitely credit the diet for the hair growth — I am 60 so there can’t be much hormonal reasons 😜. I think the high quality diet, extra protein were the drivers. Anyway, I hope your hair does something similar!

I saw a TV chef make a pearl barley risotto this morning and thought it sounded like a good alternative to rice. However, my research has thrown up so many different views. It is supposed to be the lowest GI grain ever at 22, but someone said when it is cooked it goes up to 66. Should I treat it like oats and only have it occasionally or should I avoid it all together.

    Any experts out there.
