Ah, crisps. Wait, what… crisps? CRISPS? 😉

Serves 8? Ha. Hahahahaha. Ha. Maybe it’s best to just use one aubergine when we try these and halve the recipe. They do look good though, yeah? Bookmarked 🙂 I’m one of these who has to have variation in my diet, otherwise I get really bored. Another good thing about BSD is that it’s reignited my love of cooking. I used to have a huge kitchen until I moved to a larger house (in the number of bedrooms) but which is actually smaller, and the kitchen is the size of a small bathroom. Units all the way around leaving me about 3 feet of space in the middle. Even making the most basic meal wrecks my kitchen, nowhere to put anything. I’m on a mission at the moment! Yay me!

This diet has made me enjoy cooking and general food preparation, even food shopping, more enjoyable for me. I do have the added benefit at the moment of not having my 10 year old daughter to cook for, as she’s away with her dad, the time while she’s away allows me to plan for when she comes back – another week yet. I’m quite enjoying the stress less getting up and ready and going to bed 😀

I’m getting excited about bloody turnips replacing potatoes, so… it doesn’t get much better than that, on a Friday night, does it? I picked up a bag of ground flaxseed in Tesco and willingly paid nearly £6 for it. I’m sure I had a social life once upon a time… friends…

I remember waking up and not having a child to get ready. I was 19. And I’ll be 48 when the last one buggers off to Uni. Enjoy it while it lasts (while of course, missing your daughter loads, but also, not too much either 😉 )

Preparation is the key though, definitely. I like to know what I’m having for the week ahead if possible, and I will mix the meals around depending how we feel. But at the very least three/four days ahead. I even know what we’re eating while camping next week… I won’t be caught out, no way, no how!

Lucky, I’m 51 so I’ll be nearly 60 by the time my daughter gets to uni age! Scary thought. I do have a son as well but he’s 21 and left home earlier this year.

I agree about preparation, I made sure I shopped and meal planned – not quite gone to plan but mostly has and I haven’t bought anything extra this week so saved myself a fortune in lunches at work. Going to do my planning tomorrow again and shop Sunday morning ready for a day of cooking turnips! 😀

I’m of to bed now so night folks, sleep well

Mine is 21 next month. He left once and come back home for the summer… my house smells of… man boy. Trainers, sweat and Lynx. Meh. Yeah but think what a fit healthy 60 year old you’ll be! Able to kick the arse of someone 30 years your junior! That’s the plan anyway… 😉

Turnip wedges are also quite nice. Got a steak tomorrow to celebrate our first milestone, onions, mushrooms and sea salt and black pepper turnip wedges along side. You do need to boil them for about 6 hours before putting them in the oven though… not even joking.

Sleep tight, see you soon 🙂

    Hi Jan

I dogsat my sisters dog over a long weekend once – he loved all the long walks, and was ready to go again in the afternoon (he had breakfast after his walk, so wasn’t quite so keen on a later start).
The day my sister got back, he suddenly pretended he had a limp and was too tired to get up & greet her.

I also took him out on the common, off lead. He was a weimaraner, and they’re all the same colour. I got him mixed up with another dog, whose owners probably thought I was trying to kidnap him, and did keep coming when I called him (my sisters dog was George, I think the other one was Joe, so might have sounded similar). George eventually appeared from behind a tree – I’m sure he’d been hiding & having a laugh!

my pedometer tracks aerobic steps as well as total steps
From the instruction leaflet: “After 10 minutes of continuous walking more than 60 steps per minute, the aerobic mode is activated. The aerobic mode deactivates after a 1-minute break.”
it’s not totally accurate, if you pause for a traffic light in the first ten minutes, it’ll restart calculating the initial ten minutes (I think) I sometimes pace back and forth at traffic lights! I just find it a useful guide of walking at potentially fat burning pace and dawdling a bit too much.
Shuffling slowly round an art gallery completely buggers up the stats!

Lucky, know what you mean about small kitchen. I am in retirement flat and think designers assume we will just microwave meals and wash one plate 🙁 Often have to put something down in living room either floor or table! I don’t have loads of things on the counter ( the toaster now away in cupboard but not getting rid ) and often use hob to rest things on – it’s an electronic one and sometimes beeps at me in protest. No room for a dishwasher either, except me that is! I hate washing up for just me, as many pans as for four. However being on this scheme has confirmed my own cooking is far better/tastier/healthier/cheaper than ready meals so I press on.

Haha Frog, I washed two Weight Watchers pedometers in my time… the air was blue, let’s just say, at nearly £20 a pop. And they were rubbish anyway. If you went for a pee, the mere act of pulling down and pulling up your pants again added about 20 steps to your daily count.

Weescotty, do you too stand in the middle of your kitchen, oven glove on, holding something hot, spinning around aimlessly looking for somewhere the put it down? 🙂 It’s crazy, I know these houses were built in the late 1940’s/early 1950’s and some in the town earlier. My grandmother lived in one with her THIRTEEN siblings, parents… oh and a lodger! How on earth did they cope? All have tiny kitchens and I believe hers was smaller still than mine. Yet the new estate, built in the late 1970s, when families were significantly smaller, where I grew up and later lived myself for 9 years until I moved here – massive kitchens! Loads of counter space and cupboards, massive walk in pantry, and room for a table up permanently. Probably about four times the size of my now kitchen. It’s hugely impractical for a family of six. My table is in my living room, one of the sides up, and the youngest two eat there, and the rest of us have the single collapsing tables to eat while sat on the sofas. It’s not ideal, and it’s not something I’ve ever done, I was raised to sit down and eat at the table, but it’s like bloody changing rooms every time we pull the dining table out. Subsequently it only ever comes out about three times a year, if I’m entertaining more than four people and we can’t eat outside, and Christmas Day. I have no room for a dishwasher. Nor a large fridge, the most I could have in there is a cooker, washer and either a under counter fridge/freezer or a dryer. I opted for the dryer and thankfully I have outhouses which are now incorporated into the house (the old outside loo, what would have once been a coal store, and a room at the end large enough for my tall freezer, a chest freezer, and a small fridge). I don’t know how I would cope without that extra space, probably be sharing my living room with a freezer or something!

I won a pan in a competition a few months ago, it had two metal sheets that slotted in to each other to make a + shape, this went into the pan to divide it into four. It’s quite a decent size and it’s ideal for cooking different vegetables in, if you aren’t cooking so much. It’s better than washing four small pans anyway!

WEESCOTTY i too live in retirement apartments and yes they must think we like to live on crumbs as theres barely space for a fridge freezer and cooker! And if i have the temerity to try to use the grill, the smoke alarms go off!LUCKY yes i too whirl round holding hot things which painfully burn my hands thru the oven gloves while i scream and fruitlessly search for a space to set them down!
However WEESCOTTY i heard Ikea have big chopping boards you can place over the sinktop for prep etc etc.

I’m surrounded by beaches 🙂 Some very busy and commercial, but some are true hidden gems. Local beaches, for local people, y’know. Shades of Royston Vasey *nods*.

It is scorchio here! Dishes (last night’s – for shame) are washed, dried and kept, washing is out, recycling is out, rubbish is out, food waste bin is out, everything replaced afresh. Kitchen tidied. Going to do a small treadmill walk then I’m trying another bread recipe, I think it was one of Elanas, a dark rye bread but I will need to double check the source. Don’t quote me. Then, when hubby arises, I am making him poached egg on toasted porridge bread, before we tackle the shed that holds the camping stuff. By noon, my living room will look like a branch of Millets.

Can’t beat it, can you Yowzer, I did without a dryer for about 6 years after it started smoking, the only downside is with a large family, in winter, there’s airers everywhere and I don’t have the floorspace. It was a freebie though, I don’t think I’d go out and buy one to replace it if it conks out. But it is handy to have. Onwards!

    Hi greenjanet
Don’t forget by the time you read my post in the morning, it’s already evening in Sydney so I’ve had a whole day to get my steps! Yes, I usually walk my dog, so that helps get my steps up. I work Wednesday thru to Friday so those days are generally lower than the rest.

I wore both my fitbit and had my phone in my pocket whilst I walked today and there was only a small discrepancy, so the pacer app isn’t too bad. How many are you aiming for today?

Gavin, I’m into my 16th week and have kept to the 800 cal/ day all the way through. I’ve followed captainlynne’s example and she is over 30 weeks now and still going strong.

I reckon I’ve got about another 4 weeks to go to get to my goal weight and when I reach it, I intend to simply increase my calories until my weight stabilises, but sugar and simple carbs will never be part of my diet again.

Best of luck in your journey!
    Cheers
    Linda

Today will be a busy one as working, this evening will also be full on lots to do at home, but I will aim for 10,000 today only problem is I walked all the way round the perimeter of my village and it only took 45 mins, so I am going to have to lap myself I think, I doo about 2,000 at work, so see what I can fit in.

Lucky – sounds like you’ve done a marathon with all those tasks this morning 🙂

It’s 3 weeks today being on the 8 week plan at 800 call a day. Stuck to it like a hawk. I will publish my results on my blog on Monday with food photos, which has everything from blood sugar/pressure , Weight, neck, body water etc… All I can say is WOW it’s amazing. 3 headline figures 1.5 stone lost. 3 inch loss on waist. 2.5 inches on neck. Blood sugars normal. Blood pressure normal nearly.

I have an idea. I have 3 lovely fun labradors that love endless walks. So if any of you are short of steps I’m sure they won’t mind additional walks 🙂

Wow Gavin, that spectacular! I bet you’re on cloud 9 this morning, aren’t you? Huge well done, you’re an inspiration, and I know you’ve been really strict on it. Can’t wait to see the blog post, I love seeing details and stats like that, especially when it’s something I’m doing too! I have just put all mine of the first 8 weeks up on a page on the recipe blog if you want a gander 🙂 I have no idea about blood pressure or blood sugar or anything connected to blood work which is a long and arduous story… but the inches and pounds lost and how long it took to reach each goal is there.

I’ve also made bread… and I’m certain MFP has cocked up… it’s coming out at 1g carbs a slice. It’s cooling so I can’t comment on the taste yet. It hasn’t risen as well as the other two loaves I baked. But at little over 100 calories a slice, if the 1g carbs thing is correct… and it tastes nice… gamechanger, anyone? It can’t be right though. Can’t be. I must have done something wrong. Or MFP has done something wrong.
