Welcome to the new 4 week challenge, starting tomorrow, i.e. Tuesday 26th December, Boxing Day (I know, I know), after we’ve weighed for the final time on the “caring gently” thread. Again, it seems I’ve been too verbose to fit the word “challenge” into the title. But you know it’s implied, right?

A four week challenge, setting our own goals, keeping us on our toes, reporting and supporting. That’s us. Join in…….

Sorry, Verano and others, I opened this thread without having first caught up on 2 days worth of posts. I agree with your sentiments about starting after New Year but not sure how to change it now. I was hoping to be able to cancel but at this stage can’t see the way to do so.

Perhaps leave it as is, everyone join in when or if they can this week and if there is a concensus, we will jump over to another new thread after new year.

I would love to join you for the challenge – as I have posted elsewhere, I’ve had an incredibly stressful few months and the BSD has taken a slide – and don’t I know it! I feel bloated, tired and completely out of sorts and I know that once I can get back to BSD I will feel good again.
Looking forward to joining all you lovely peeps!

Boxing day, starting this new challenge at 62.5kg. As this represents a gain on the Christmas challenge, I will work to turn this around. Behavioral goals for this challenge:
: no chocolate exc Lindt 90%. No more than 2 pieces a day, if any. My
friends will need to go without my rocky road for the foreseeable future
: if I sit for a cup of tea while shopping, just have tea … no cake, no
biscuits. That only happened a couple of times but is an old habit I
thought I’d stopped, but those old habits are always hovering, just
waiting to be let in again. Awareness needed at all times
: one day at a time

Best wishes to all for the coming challenge xx

Happy to join you, SSB, on your return journey to “unbloatedness”. I, too, have that bloated feeling today, not nice, needs to change.

    Hello All
Just nipping on to say I’d love to join this Challenge if I may. I have a meeting with a practice nurse early tomorrow to discuss the results of my end of November Hba1c results. I’ll wait until after that meeting to set my targets/goals for this Challenge.

Saltyseabird – I read your other post – what a very difficult and stressful time you’ve had – best wishes for a healthier and happier 2018

Marsie – great title – that’s how I’m going to go during these 4 weeks!

Hi everyone, hope you’ve all enjoyed a lovely Christmas 🙂
Thanks for starting this thread Marsie.
I’ll join in, but will be treating this week as an “off plan” week then starting properly on 2 Jan. My goal for the first week will be to minimise any gain (and I know there will be a gain as I’m on leave from work and have a few social outings and trips planned). My overall goal for the 4 weeks is the same as it was in our last challenge and that is to reach the Overweight range for my BMI. I was only 1.2kg away from that goal 4 weeks ago but now it’s most likely 3kg away (not sure because I haven’t weighed myself for a few days now). I’ve been continuing to increase my weekly step count, original goal was 70,000 steps per week and last week I did over 90,000 (Christmas shopping played a part in that!), I’d like to reach 100,000 steps per week by the end of this challenge.
It will be interesting to see what my weight is in week 3 as that will conincide with my 1 year BSD anniversary.
    Good luck everyone 🙂

Thank you Marie123, I am definitely starting today and actually feeling better just for having made the decision.
I’m in the uk for a week from Thursday so probably won’t be much on plan but will seek to limit the damage but then 100% on track.

I’m in, although my only goal for this first week is not to go up anymore in weight! I have been enjoying a relatively un-BSD diet over the last few weeks as I have indulged in many old favourites and my weigh in on the other previous challenge thread will be ‘warts and all’. So with first week as BSD maintenance, the remaining three weeks when I start work again will be a mini-800 period, probably 2:5 with more at weekends. Carbs will be strictly controlled again, and I expect a very fast drop back to target area. February is already planned in as a ‘recovery’ logged month, where calories are increased by 50 per day until back up to TDEE, so I will be active on the next two challenges.

Hi all, I’m so pleased you’ve decided to start the challenge thread today, was panicking what to do about this week without one as I’m feeling fired up to get stuck in strictly from today.
    Start weight today 10st 4lbs
Goals are to drop into the 9’s and fit into a certain pair of trousers.
Plan to set max 20g carbs, around 800 cal and lots of intermittent fasting, one meal a day when possible. Good luck all xxx

    Hi All,
I’m in, I too will consolidate until starting on the 2nd of Jan. My feelings resonate with Marsie in that it is so easy to slip back into the old bad habits, I wonder if I will ever be free of this monster or will it haunt me forever. I have lost 7.8Kg on the last challenge, but have regained 1.2Kg over Christmas but I am ready for the next stint. I don’t know if setting a proposed weight loss helps, but I know if I stick to the plan the weight comes off so I will go with that for now. Onwards and downwards. Good luck to all.

Hi all, I’m in for this challenge. I’m just starting week 7 so this challenge will see me through the completion of my first round and 2 weeks of my second. My target will be a 4kg loss. This is consistent with my results in the December challenge, however, I’m preparing for the horror of a possible slow down in weight loss. I plan on sticking to a 800/20, 16/8 pattern and continue on with no alcohol commitment.

As much as I wish I could set and achieve a goal for waist measurement, beyond adopting a healthy lifestyle and paying attention to losing weight, this health indicator has a mind of its own. I will keep up the hopeful monitoring though.

So starting weight for January is 70.4. BMI 26
Goal 66.4 BMI 24.8 – WOOHOO in the healthy range (I’ll hit this exciting achievement at 66.8kg)

Flick how exciting to be so close to the healthy range 🙂
I summoned up the courage to weigh myself this morning and was quite surprised to see “only” a 700g gain! That is not too bad considering I have been totally off plan for over a week, and also for much of December.
So this means my goal for this challenge – to move out of the obese range and into Overweight range BMI is 2.5kg away, not over 3kg as I feared. So my goal for the first week is to hold steady and not gain any more, then lose 2.5kg over the remaining 3 weeks.

Good luck with your results Marie123, sure you’ll be off to a great start for the new year.

SSB – I too read your other post. Best wishes for 2018.

For me, I will be back on track from tomorrow, keeping to strict BSD principles and calorie counting.
    Starting weight today – 11st 1lb
    Goal for end of January 2018 – 10st 10lb

Good luck to everyone, look forward to starting the new year with you all x

I’m still surrounded by unhealthy food which is making life difficult. The real food (turkey etc) has all been finished off but there are lots of chips and lollies and chocolates that myself and others purchased, way too much to be eaten over the two days. I’ve invited family over tomorrow for a swim and to eat up the naughty stuff so hopefully it will be easier after that. It’s not all bad here – we also have a lot of cheese!

I’ve been being a bit wishy-washy about getting back on strict BSD800, 1st January seemed soon enough (its even a Monday! I like starting on Mondays) but I’ve just been hit with two good reasons not to wait those few extra days.

Last night I saw a video of myself. We were playing a Kinect Dance game, which I often do for exercise but I don’t watch back the replay video. But my four-year-old niece insisted on watching every replay. I am so much fatter in real life than I am in my head. I have found that often in the past, too, but thought it would no longer happen since I’ve lost some weight. I thought I now fitted my mental image of myself – overweight but not THAT obese. Um, yeah, no. And so much fatter than anyone else in the room.

Then this morning, my weight (which has been steady over Christmas) had jumped up half a kg. I guess the bad food finally caught up with me. Three days of frankenfood snacks will do that.

So it’s time to begin, four days earlier than I thought, but I’ve done this before so I know I can. I’m kind of relieved, all those Cheezles were making me feel a bit sick anyway.

Natalie, I’m with you on this one!! I’m starting again today too after realising my weight was back up to the same as when I first started the bsd 14 months ago! Had only ever managed to get 7 kg off from the set goal of 12 or so, so feeling like I need a swift kick!! Also, my jeans keep undoing by themselves! It’s time…
Will try and do a bit of a fast today to clear things out, loved your description of frankenfood, can’t wait to get back to things, actually.
Wishing you lots of luck on your restart!!

    Hi folks,

I am up for joining the challenge today as well. I am not sure on weight targets for the next 4 weeks, but would like to set an exercise target instead. I started the 800 per day in mid October, and have so far lost just under 19kg, and have another 18kg to go to get to my target weight.

I have been fighting to control my weight all my adult life, without realising that I was hampering myself because as a vegetarian my diet was always carb high, protein low even though I was controlling the total calories.

My plan is to continue to stick to the 800 cals per day diet and increase the amount of exercise per day I am going to dust off my fitbit and set myself the target of 10000 steps at least each day and just see how much weight I loose over the next 4 weeks.

Hi everyone and thanks Marsie for getting this started straight away. I’m starting at 102.3 kg. Even if I’m a couple of days late joining you all. I like the idea that people are taking it a bit easy up until New Year and that’s sort of where my head is too but I’m going to try to curb the snacking that’s crept up over the holidays .
Goals for me – some are continuing from last challenge:
    1.Lose as much as I can before 25.1.18 2 x surgeries
    2. Get HBA1C in normal range
    3. Make BSD and my renal diet fit better
    4. Get under 100kg into double digits!
    5. Get under 98kg bmi <35 before surgery.
    6. Reduce my potassium <5.0
    7. Reduce phosphorus to acceptable range
    8. Reduce BP meds
    9. Get off insulin
I’m having a blood test for potassium tomorrow so hoping my cherry 🍒 indulgence hasn’t sent my number the wrong way.
Wishing everyone of you every success and thanking you in advance for the guidance and support which has overwhelmed me in the previous challenge x

Thanks everyone, and I was going to say good luck but of course luck doesn’t really have anything to do with it. We can do this! So many inspiring success stories on this site.

I didn’t set a goal in my last post. I’m not sure if I should set a weight loss goal as that is the part I don’t have full control over. I only have control of my behaviours. But I have another 18.6 kg to lose to get to the top of my healthy weight (58) and that is my eventual target. For this 8 weeks, 6.6 kg would get me down to 70 kg and make me very happy. Or 69kg which is what I weighed when I got married 15 years ago! Is 7.6kg achievable in 8 weeks?

The things I can control: 800 calories, 50 g carbs. At least 8 cups of water (my tracker says 11 for my weight). 30 mins vigorous exercise a day. This morning I’ve already spent an hour and a half gardening – not the polite ladylike kind, the sweaty filthy exhausting kind! I had a healthy breakfast and I’ve got a frittata in the oven cooking for lunch soon. A good start.

Hi Natalie, this is a 4 week challenge, and then when it ends we usually start up another one. I’ve found them really helpful as it keeps me accountable.
I can totally understand how you feel. I’ve lost 12.5kg, and 40cm from my bust/waist/hips and on the inside I feel slim and healthy. I saw a group picture with me in it, taken at a work function and I was the biggest person in the photo, and I looked so much bigger than what I thought I did!
I guess though, at the end of the day, I am still obese (going by BMI). I may be at my lowest weight in 5 years, but I still have something like 18kg to lose before I’m safely in the healthy range!
    So that’s my goal – to lose 18kg in 2018 🙂
I’m a slow loser so it will most likely take the whole year, but the biggest thing I’ve learnt with BSD is that it DOES work! We just have to be patient.
So in the meantime, don’t lose sight of that slimmer you – keep feeling slim as it’s so much easier to stay on track when you feel good about yourself.
As we often say on here – Keep on keeping on!

SueBlue you reminded me about measuring and I then checked my waist and have lost 4 cm from there! Mine is a long term large number to lose so I’m loving that I can break it up into 4 week challenges because the total task is so overwhelming. And it’s worked for me even though I’m not counting calories strictly. I imagine as I go along it will become necessary but right now I’m happy with my results. I’m not looking forward to hospital when my extended stays will make it all the more challenging but I’ll take my nut snacks and do my best.
This morning I decided to wear a skirt as it’s so hot. I tried one on I bought about a month ago and it was already too big! Yay! I was scared it might fall off after I wore it so I picked another there to wear that I bought this week at the Boxing Day sales. Now I need to buy a belt!
I’ve just stopped shopping to eat and I’m hoeing into a bun less burger with an egg and bacon, beetroot tomato cucumber. I’ve never liked bbq sauce and I don’t much like the meat patty which the cheese is stuck to. So no problem leaving most of that and enjoying the rest guilt free with an iced long black w little milk jug on the side. Tonight is planned no carb ploughman variation followed by mixed fresh berries plus yoghurt/ cream. My planned indulgence is a mohito made my way with a little sweetener lots of lime n mint and a 1/ 2 shot of Bacardi and soda! This time 2 years ago I drank the real deal all through my 2nd trip to India. That was for a month before I had to stop travelling. It’s my go to holiday drink and I might have a few between now and New Years.

Natalie, SueBlue and Milalin – It’s wonderful to see you all so focused on
your goals for the coming year! I love the positive thoughts, they are
definitely what will get you there. Natalie, your weight loss goals for
8 weeks are completely achievable, even if you suspect you are a slow
loser. You always have the option of dropping the carbs lower if you
hit an extended plateau. Two months in I had one that lasted 18 days,
but when I dropped my carbs to 20, I broke it and never saw another
stall for the next 8 months that it took me to reach my target. I think
my losses per month were pretty average, 14lbs. It’s curious how our
measurements change, also. Some of us have seen immediate change
with our waist measurement, others find it stubbornly the last to go.
I think that the most important thing to keep in mind is our bodies all
respond differently so it’s never a good thing to define success by
comparing ourselves to others. It WILL HAPPEN if you never give up
though, I promise! Plan, plan, plan, and drink water until you think you
can’t stand anymore, then drink some more 🙂 It will be great to follow
you all from success to success, one mini goal at a time. Very best
    wishes to you all!

I am pretty happy with my day, 850cal/69g carb. All the carbs (nearly all) were from things like yoghurt and broccoli. It’s going to be a challenge to get them lower. The big temptation overcome today was we had people over in the afternoon and I put out some of the junk leftover from Christmas (still have enough left for New Years though). I sat with my cup of tea and had a little cheese and 8 grapes when I was hungry – and one Lindor Ball. I was very impressed with myself! Cheezles and chocolates and lollies and cheese platter with crackers and fruit all over the table and I barely touched it. I’ve also had 9 cups of water and tea, and did plenty of physical activity. Not perfect, but a good first day back.

Allie I do think I am a slow loser, and also my waist measurement barely changed with a 9.6kg weight loss. Fast or slow, it will go eventually.

I used to use a tracker called Calorie King, then when I got a Fitbit a couple of years ago I used their tracker. For Christmas my husband gave me an Apple Watch so I needed to change to something that synced with it. I tried Fat Secret because quite a few people here use it, loved the photo feature, but it didn’t seem to have a water tracker and today I tried twice to enter a ten-ingredient recipe but it disappeared into the ether each time leaving me very frustrated. So I’ve dumped Fat Secret and started using MyFitnessPal, which works with the watch very well. Does anyone get the premium service, and is it worth it?

Thanks for starting this thread – if there was anyone that needed to focus hard and soon it’s ME! I’ve actually not weighed myself since 20 December and I’m not going to until 2 January but in the meantime I am getting back to plan slowly but surely and just going for cutting down on the crap a little bit each day. It’s been really hard but I definitely think I’ve eaten less rubbish than I normally would have done and I think it’s been said before but I’ve completely gone off anything but dark chocolate, anything else is just too sweet.

Regrettably, I know that I weigh at least 14lbs more than I did at this time last year which is a real shame but this has been coming all year, with a wedding, honeymoon, holidays and work stress all adding their few pounds..and then Christmas. I am just going to look forward to 2018 with renewed vigour and will be following S-G’s example of going Strictly 8 weeks from 2 January to kick start the year.

By the end of this challenge I hope to be posting losses and I hope to have found the courage to step on the scales again!!

Alas, a couple of wines and then my lovely husband popped some champagne when we got home so that was the end it of that! Weight up to 75.2 kg this morning 😩

Hi all, back again for another challenge and trying for the third month in succession to reach my target of 62.5kg. I haven’t weighed since Boxing Day when I was 64.2 so 1.7 kg to lose.

My goal for this challenge, since I can’t really control what weight I lose, is to not allow anything off plan to pass my lips and concentrate on water consumption. It’s easy at work but a lot more difficult when I’m out and about.

All my Christmas parties are done but now there are the New Year ones to negotiate. Two days of sailing on the harbour coming up which I love but it means being at the mercy of the food my hosts provide. I’ll have celery sticks and plenty of water and keep occupied with ropes and things.

Some wonderful goals set for this challenge, wishing you all strength of will and success.

    Hi All,

It’s good to see everyone setting their goals and making a start on this new challenge – it might be a bit tricky to begin with but we’ll all soon be back in the swing of things. Natalie – hope you have a good night’s rest and Mariet enjoy the sailing.

Sandy47 – thanks for wishing me luck with my hba1c results. I actually had my test done in November and accessed my results on-line so I knew my results prior to the meeting (my hba1c has gone from an August high to normal – yeah!) but this was the earliest date I could get for my review meeting. I have to say the practice nurse seemed quite shocked at my result but after I’d reassured her I had nothing else wrong with me and it was ‘just’ the effect of Michael Mosley’s BSD, she was OK.

My target for this challenge is to lose 3lb to shift down into a healthy BMI – one of my original goals. Once I get to the top of the healthy BMI range, I’ll look to see how to move forward from there.

I’m really looking forward to entering this whole lovely fresh new year with you all. Best wishes everyone

Marie what a lovely post. I’m sure you were really pleased with the result. I’m looking forward to that one too. Meanwhile, I have been out a bit but following the general plan but not counting cals.
Last night I was taken to dinner by a friend and I had soda water w fresh lemon then a chicken breast boscaiola – cream, mushroom and bacon w greens and Dutch Carrots. Yummy, probably a bit big but I enjoyed all of it no guilt.

Marie, 3 lbs out from a normal BMI is a wonderful place to be. I do remember when I made it inside that goal, it was one of the big ones! You have the
power to take it anywhere you want after that 🙂 I hope this week will see
you there, or next week at most!

Milalin that boscaiola sounds delicious! I’ve been making something similar bulked out with a lot of zoodles (zucchini noodles) and I can weigh everything at home. Cream and bacon have quite a few calories! But taste awesome.

Marie your results sound great. And your nurse was worried something sinister was going on! No, just BSD! I’ve had pre-diabetes for years after having gestational diabetes with my second child eleven years ago, due for a check soon and hopefully I’ll get some good results. I’ve already lost a third of the weight and on my way to more.

Mariet I’m sure sailing burns a lot of calories!

I had a much better night, in bed for 13 hours, still a bit uncomfortable today but not as bad. The Thai food doesn’t seem to have done any damage, I lost another 600g! That is 1.4kg in two days. I find it weirdly confronting to lose so much when my eating was so far from ‘perfect’. I only have 0.2 kg to get down to where I was two months ago. Surely I can lose that in two days. Although tomorrow will be very challenging, lunch with my side of the family who I haven’t seen for Christmas yet, NYE dinner and evening party for husband’s side. But I’m cooking the dinner and taking part of the lunch so I’m in control! And I don’t care much for alcohol.

Hi everyone. I have just picked up on this thread and there are many echoes of other threads talking about the ‘carb monster ‘. I have just written on the ‘Positives’ thread that I truly believe that you eventually reach a point when carbs are no longer attractive. I know I have reached that point but it has taken quite a long time. I’m not sure when it happened exactly but I think it may have been at around a year or so of eating the BSD way. I’m not saying that a roast potato will never pass my lips again but I just don’t enjoy simple carbs anymore. I do love Lindt 90% though! I really do think it’s possible to be ‘carb free’ it just takes time.

There was a very interesting article in the Daily Mail on December 26th about ‘The Personalized Diet’ by Drs Segal & Elivan, which I’m sure MM refers to in his Clever Guts book as well. Basically it’s saying that no one model fits all and that some people can have certain carbs without a blood sugar spike. So maybe I can have that roast potato after all! Sorry I don’t have a link for it but will try and find one and post it.

I’m just ‘easing’ myself back into full on weighing and logging from next Tuesday for a strict 8 weeks but will try and keep up with this challenge as well. Just want to wish everyone a Happy and Healthy New Year.

Thanks V. It makes sense, doesn’t it, that different bodies may react differently? I’ll have a look for it.

Hi there Zippy, welcome on, hope you do well.

I’m struggling with my good intentions this week and we’ve barely even started. Tomorrow will be better.

I’m not sure I’ll have time to post tomorrow (ie Sunday) so I’ll wish you all a happy, healthy and safe 2018. Xx

Lying awake this morning with my stomach full of acid thinking about going to see my side of the family for lunch today. My mother’s brother and sister’s families. Don’t get me wrong, they are lovely people. Lovely, gorgeous, tanned, athletic, thin thin thin people. And I had to grow up the only fat one, well me and my mum. They are seriously beautiful, Kellie has done some modelling, Raina is an air hostess or whatever they are called nowadays, Laura who has youth on her side at about 25 is honestly the prettiest person I have ever seen. And is also a lovely person. My aunt Mandy is in her 60s, looks a slender attractive 40. I wish they weren’t so nice so I could hate them all.

I was always ‘the smart one’.

And the thing is, they all avoid fatty foods like it’s poison and love carbs and sugar. Adore their sugary sweet desserts. And they are skinny and glowing with health. How does that work? I’m taking a couple of roast chickens along today. Kellie is bringing croissants and muffins. It’s enough to make anyone give up.

Oh Natalie I so feel your pain! I have two much loved sisters who have never cracked 9stone without a good excuse (pregnancy! Even then they snapped back effortlessly to waif like proportions!). Even though I have lost 3st 6lb I am still the ‘big one’. They eat whatever they like whenever they like. They are like my dad’s family, I am the image of my mother. So unfair but don’t give up! As they are lovely people I am sure they will be encouraging of you and sincerely delighted with your success so far.

I hope your day with your family is a happy one. Happy new year! 🎉🎉

Thanks Mariet! It’s over and was fine, I let myself get worked up as usual when they probably barely notice my weight (much) they are just glad to see me and my kids. We had a big family lunch (big family, not big lunch) and caught up on family news.

Now I need to cook dinner for my husband’s side – who I’ve always more comfortable with as they are all shapes and sizes – then an evening NYE party. Some tempting food situations to negotiate.

I hope everyone has a lovely evening, not revolving around food or alcohol.

Christmas weight gain of 3lbs disappeared in just 2 days so I’m ending 2017 back at 10st 1lb, which is one and a half stone less than this time last year, going in the right direction at least. Need to ensure the downward trend continues this time.

Hi everyone, thanks for the challenge. I need it. I disappeared from the last challenge because our Broadband was down and I needed to conserve my mobile data. I really missed your encouragement over the festive period a realised the mistake of starting a new WOE just before Christmas. I totally relapsed into the old binge eating carbs ways I’m afraid. However the good news is that I know that the method works and I can get back to it.
At least I’m a little bit lighter than when I started even if I have put loads back on.

    Resolutions for 2018.
Short term 800/20 for 8 weeks starting 1st Jan. No sugar, no grains, no alcohol. 3lb per week weight loss. Exercise every day.
Resolution for year – get to next Christmas with this WOE so embedded in my brain that I don’t even notice not eating bread or chocolate or mince pies!

Am joining the challenge late – today was the first time I have weighed myself since mid-December. So I was really nervous as I have a history of piling on the pounds over holiday times and although this has not happened since being on the BSD – it was quite scary to get on the scales.

So – 1lb up from mid-December – which I am quite pleased with as I have eaten far too many hickory smoked nuts among other delicious BSD friendly foods.. My goal is to lose the lb – slowly. Am back logging on fat secret but am not looking for a rapid weight loss – just a gentle dropping down of no more than 3lbs in total.

Monday weekly weigh in, 75.4 kg which is 0.8kg down this week. Considering this week included Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Eve, I am absolutely delighted with that! I did have some non-BSD treats but ate well in between and it paid off.

Just checking in to wish everyone a happy new year. The 3lb gain I had over Christmas has gone, so I’m back to 10st 13lb and looking forward to starting the year in the 10s and hopefully losing another 2 stone to get to my target weight. My target for this challenge is 10st 10lb, so just 3lb to go. Feeling optimistic.

Marie123, well done on your results, didn’t realise you had accessed them yourself. Here’s to getting to your healthy BMI. And Natalie, don’t give up!

Verano – read the article you mentioned and found it very interesting. Not going to start experimenting yet until I’ve got to target weight though and am always keen to learn from long term BSDers/maintainers.

As well as continuing with BSD, I’ve also committed to doing TRUE yoga with Adriene on youtube (link below if anyone else is interested). I think it was mentioned on another thread by Salty Sea Bird, so thanks for that. I’ve dipped in and out of yoga, and usually ended up in a heap on the floor, so is good for a laugh if nothing else. If you sign up, she sends you a daily email with affirmations if you’re into that kind of thing. I’m going to give it a go anyway, hoping my weight loss to date will make it easier!

Looking forward to starting the new year with everyone, and hoping that this is going to be a great year for all of us, especially those with health problems. Thinking of you all.

    Lots of love, Sandy x
