    Hi all

I return from my holiday on Tuesday evening and have chosen that day for the first of 7 days, yes just 7, to do a reboot !!

I had decided to do this a few days ago but after reading Krysia’s amazing achievement of being off insulin for over 2 weeks I’m spurred on even more.

    So …. My aim

To stay under 30g of carbs each day for seven consecutive days!!

Not even sure I will count calories I think they may take care of themselves! Will keep a diary so that WHEN it works I’ll be able to look back and see just what I did.

Doesn’t sound toooooo difficult! Must be worth a shot! Join me! It’s just 1 week, 7 days!!!

I’m with you. I have 2 weeks before my holiday and we are going to hubbys family in Scotland. He is going to tell them I am on this for my health and just ask them to provide more veg to replace the bad carbs but don’t know how I will manage as it is really difficult when you are in someone elses house. So, before I go I want to give this a good go starting with the 7 day reboot.

    See you there Verano.

    May I just recommend

150g of courgette is a surprising lot and has very few carbs – I sear it in chunks in a dry saucepan till it’s browned. Yummy.
Salad of 20g of baby spinach with some feta cheese (lots of pepper/salt, dribble olive oil/balsamic) can be very filling and lovely with your dinner as a treaty extra, though very low in carbs. I had 20g of baby spinach as a base for a number of things, including breakfast eggs.
One spring onion adds the onionyness with hardly any carbs. Add 6 baby plum tomatoes for sufficient tomatoeyness ๐Ÿ˜‰ but few carbs
Spice it up with garlic and ginger ๐Ÿ˜‰

Hope those help. I think you may find it easier than you expect.

    Hi Verano,
I’m doing ok on my 2nd 8weeks but losses have definitely slowed down as my carbs/cals have crept up a bit this last couple of weeks. So I will do a week of very low carbs with you to get back on track. I’m not diabetic (well, I wasn’t tested…)but I have better appetite control, weight losses and also feel much more energetic if I keep my carbs down.
    Are you still taking metformin?

Tizzie … yes still taking metformin but I have a diabetic review next month …. hence the last drive to bring down my Hba1c!!

Thanks for the food ideas Igorasusual they will be really helpful.

Have been away 3 weeks now and am so looking forward to cauliflower (iffy here), asparagus , courgetti ( no spiraliser here ), strawberries only a couple for the next 7 days!!!

Just looking forward to my ‘real’ food again and really excited about this 7 day challenge especially as we are now a ‘clan’.

Definitely needing a reboot. Tonight I had my first taste of bad carb in 11 weeks but it was an absolute necessity. I went to a zumba class which started at 7.15 pm, too early for dinner but had a snack of some chicken just before I went. Half an hour into the class I felt a bit lightheaded and got a bit worried. I had my old emergency kit with me so ate a Special K Breakfast Bar. It did the trick but I don’t want to have to do that every week. Next time I will have an early dinner of something like an omelette to make sure my bg is at a safe level. Well I certainly burnt it off.

Looking forward tomorrow. At least this will bump to the top.

Yes, definitely on for this reboot – I’ve been quite good today
the Overnight marathon volunteering resulted in a few too many carbs and getting a bit dehydrated over the weekend.

Good emergency bars that I’ve found recently:
Primal Pantry Brazil Nut& Cherry Raw Bar – Tesco sell pack of 4 30g bars (individual bars are 45g)
    34 calories, 11.7g of carbs – 50% dates, 40% Brazils and 10% Cherries

Kind Bars – there’s a brilliant one with Sea Salt – and Dark Chocolate!!! the rest is nuts – 16g of carbs, and around 200 calories – that one is a real treat because the dark chocolate is amazing.

Frog, I cant get the bars you mention, I live if France. I will have a light dinner or should it be called tea and I will take some nuts with me. I did enjoy it though and it was a hefty hour long work out with a 10 minute mindfulness exercise at the end, burnt about 450 calories so I can forgive myself.

    Hi

    So Day 1 of 7

Well I’ve put on 2.6lbs while I’ve been away. Interestingly while I was in a hotel I lost weight probably because I was walking more …. know the answer then!!!!

My fasting blood sugar this morning was 7.5 !!! That’s the highest it’s been since I started random fasting tests a month ago. I had 4 squares of dark chocolate last night …. to finish it off !!!! That may have something to do with the result !

I’ve worked out my carbs for the day and they come in at 25g so no leeway really. Our flight looks to be on time so hopefully no hiccups there.

Good luck to you all will check in tomorrow.

Day 1 and I have gained 2 lbs from my naughty weekend even though I did a Zumba class last night. Anyway, today is a new day and a reboot. The preamble for this thread says to stay under 30 grams, well I think I can do that.

    Weight 75.4 kg
    Fasting blood glucose 5.3 (96).

Dr Mosley says that exercise will not help you lose weight but it can help keep it off. I normally exercise 35 mins daily without fail but with the colder weather I have not been getting into the pool and have not got my brain into autumn /winter exercise mode so I have done very little exercise for 2 weeks. Because my body is used to exercise it really needs it. My aim is to get out the DVD’s and do HipHopAbs with Shaun T 3 days a week, Zumba on Monday evenings and a little walking in between.

Accountabilty carb score, Breakfast 9 g, lunch 14g, dinner 5g. Total 27 grams. My planned snack has zero carbs plus a 10g piece of 70% dark chocolate at one carb , total 28. I am also at 700 calories.

Hope you all have a good day.

Kayaking this morning, and I’ve not eaten lunch yet, but having some of the casserole I made at the weekend, so that will take me to 21 carbs and just under 400 calories.

Home now but managed quite well yesterday despite the travelling.
    Calories approx. 800
    Carbs approx. 27

I can only calculate roughly as we had an Indian meal last night. I only had chicken tikka and a salad …. no sauces, popadoms or even the after eight!!! Drank sparkly water… can you see my halo shining!!!

Anyway, have lost 0.6lb on my 2.6lb gain so now with you sunny-girl unless you’ve lost some since yesterday!!

Verano the food was terrible. It is one of those cheap French restaurants where you get 5 courses and a glass of wine for โ‚ฌ13. Most of it I couldn’t eat because it was carb and some I couldn’t eat because I didn’t know what was in it and neither did the waitress (an old lady who helps out now and then). The starter was tomato soup with noodles, I tried to eat around the noodles and got about 2 tablespoonsful. The next course was supposed to be a plate of chacuterie (cold meats) it was a choux bun full of something, didnt eat, tomato topped with something, ate the tomato, and one slice of pate. Turned out the something was tuna mayo. Main was guinea fowl, okay but overcooked and dry, served with mush of cabbage, nothing else. Then I had the cheese course, 2 v small slices of cheese. For pudding they had coconut cake with raspberry coulis. I ordered it then shared it with my friends.

It was easy to resist the wine as they give you a bottle of red without asking and as my OH and 2 friends all drink red I just did without.

I don’t know why the Brits go to these awful restaurants, some sort of wow we can get 5 courses etc. I’d much rather go to my 1 Michlen star place that does a set lunch for โ‚ฌ25. Wine is extra but the food is amazing.

So that is why, with grilled mushrooms and poached egg for breakfast and a fritatta for dinner I managed 700 calories. I will have a snack later with the 100 calories spare and I have had a half hour swim, it was lovely.

Ok!! Shame the food was that bad but maybe it saved you from yourself! At least the rest of the days food sounds lovely.

I agree with you about the 5 courses almost like the eat as much as you like buffets for โ‚ฌ7 that seem to be around in most resorts! In saying that in Spain restaurants have to serve a ‘Menu del Dia’ which is very reasonable and is normally of good quality. Usually 3 courses, with a choice and a drink. The food in most decent places is just smaller portions from the main menu.

Going to watch GBBO soon!!! I can drool even if I can’t partake !

Was quite hungry by late afternoon but had losely farm cottage cheese mashed up with half an avocado and salt and ate it with a piece of red pepper and some sugar snap peas – very yummy and very filling. So did 28 carbs and 748 calories today.

I laughed at the restaurant Sunshine Girl – in the UK I really like cote restaurants – they have a brilliant fixed price menu, and easy to choose BSD friendly from it. A friend who is veggie always suggests that we go there – then is fed up with the veggie selection – happened about 3 times so far! Each time I remind her that she should have ordered from the standard menu rather than the prix fixe.

Last time I went, I had a smoked salmon starter, which came on sourdough. Carefully ate the salmon, left the sourdough – and then ate it before they cleared my plate away. Was only tiny, and quite thin, but I was cross with myself!
Shame that you didn’t have a nicer time though – hope the company made up for the bad food!

I’m having 50g of carbs as my top limit, but aiming to be below it. Today not quite as good as yesterday; 51g of carb and 822 calories, but happy enough with that.

GBBO without eating was hard – I should have made some jelly!

    Carbs 24.5 g ….. net 16.2g
Just wondering if maybe thats too low?????

Anyway this morning I’ve dropped another 1.4lbs so just 0.6lbs to get rid of my holiday surplus so really pleased about that.

When this week is over I’ll be with you Frog and upping my carbs maybe to 40g and then 50g I think.

Well done Verano for the weight loss. Your holiday weight has come off so fast. I think that dropping calories too low for one day is ok and must be helping with the weight loss.

The blood sugar level is annoying. My blood sugars were swinging up too much even in the week before they suddenly become normal. In fact they were running a bit higher than normal that week which was why it was a shock that I no longer needed insulin the following week.

I feel that perhaps there is a tipping point where when enough fat drains out of your liver and pancreas they can start working properly again. Until then – even if you have lost a lot of that fat – the fat that is still there seriously impairs how they work. These thoughts are not based on any scientific evidence and are just me trying to make sense of what happened to my own blood sugars. In the last three weeks fasting blood sugars have gone no higher than 4.9 and they no longer swinging up high after meals like before.

This morning have dropped 1 1/2lbs since Tuesday so have just got 3/4lb to lose to get to one stone lost since 3rd Sept. A bit faster than my first stone which took 4 months to lose.

Can I just mention again to those worrying about fasting sugars (apart from have you read all the threads about it? Use the search box) – OH’s medics all say “liver clears out sugars overnight so often high readings” , fasting blood ls therefore notoriously unreliable as overall BS measure, exactly the reason why HbA1c tests used to get a more long term measure.

Bill1954 here (hi Bill!) gave fasting bloods up and measured before and after meals. But read his “this has to work for me” thread.

    Hope that helps guys. ๐Ÿ™‚

Hi Frog enjoy Dorset , lovely part of the country.

Krysia your post made me think about stress and blood sugars and thinking about my level of stress the last few days this may have had an effect. Travelling Tuesday, always stressful ! Catching up on post etc yesterday ! Maybe tomorrow will be better!

Igorasusual , I’m not even sure why I’m doing this! I decided not to test after reading how unreliable fasting bloods are but thought I needed a measure of some description. Mistake!!!!

Will be having my 6 monthly review soon so hopefully my HbA1c has gone down. I’ve been following low carbs for 3 months now so at least I’m into ‘new’ red cells! We’ll just have to wait and see.

I have a hospital appointment tomorrow, nothing to do with T2, but know I will get weighted so it will be interesting to see how much I’ve lost since last summer!

Verano yes stress does have quite an impact on blood sugars and Igorasusual is right that it is the hb1ac that is the important figure. Also agree that blood sugar readings after meals are a much better indicator of how things are going. So good luck with your next hb1ac.

I had to take fasting and meal time blood sugars because I was injecting insulin at least 5 times a day and the variation each day was quite surprising. All sorts of stuff affected my readings but not in the same way each time. Sometimes stress made levels much worse but very very occasionally they actually improved. So it was quite difficult judging just how much insulin to inject for each meal – hence the roller coaster blood sugars.

Frog – have noticed the same also. A large weight drop one day then nothing for the next few days. It is really good to have a friend who is good at cooking within the BSD guidelines so do have a lovely break in Dorset.

Have had a lovely half hour this morning trying on clothes. I have lots of stuff in my wardrobes (I do have 2 1/2 wardrobes crammed with clothes – although quite a lot of that is work clothes). A lot of it is my fat stuff and there is other stuff that I bought when I lost weight on other diets and because I only stayed at the lower weight for all of 10 seconds the items have usually only been worn only once or twice.

The lovely pink trouser suit I slimmed down into for my daughters wedding in 2013 looks like I can get another person in it as well as me. Some other stuff I was desperate to get into is also now too large. There is one jacket that looks truly horrible, even though it fits. There are a few other items that look good now and there is one lovely red Zara jacket that looks really good. It does up and the colour really suits me. My daughter says that I mustn’t wear it if I ever fly Virgin.

What I have noticed is that this way of eating is really getting rid of the tummy fat in a way that no other diet has ever done in the past.

Hi All, Verano, we have some nice restaurants that do a fixed meal for around 13 euros but this one was just particularly bad. They are okay in the evening when they have a bigger menu.

Frog, most lunchtime fixed price restaurants have at least a couple of choices or you can eat from the more expensive (but still a good price) menu, this place was take it or leave it, and I left most of it. Very good for the diet must go there again.

Well I have made a massive mistake this morning by having a melon, spinach and almond milk shake. I wondered why I was buying almond milk and today used real milk, then I saw the carbs and calories – about half as much again than the almond. The melon was 11 carbs and because I was using real milk I threw in a handful of real almonds. Total for one meal 28 carbs. So abject failure but lesson learned.

I have had to trim the rest of the day down in carbs but still could not stay under 30 so my total for the day will be 42 carbs. Calories 670, so maybe that will help make up for it.

Weight 74.9 the same as yesterday
    Fasting blood glucose 5.5 (100)

Tomorrow is another day and frankly my dear I DO give a damn. To misquote gone with the wind, or was that the cabbage I had yesterday.

42 carbs is great sunshine-girl! Most people would be over the moon with that. I know it more than 30g but it’s still very acceptable and your net carbs will be less. Also 30 is just an arbitrary figure.

    That’s really interesting Igorasusual .

I’ve just checked a few packaged goods on Fatsecret , such as Nairns oatcakes, and the packet shows ‘available’ carbohydrates and the amount of those carbs that are sugar. In a separate heading it has the fibre content. Fatsecret shows the ‘available’ carbs as ‘carbs’ then subtracts the ‘fibre’ giving a ‘net ‘ figure!!! This is plainly wrong!!

Anybody using Fatsecret needs to be careful when including ‘manufactured’ foods. The carb value is the ‘net’ value.

Igorasusual do we count the net carb figure for fresh foods?

In that case, I count the biggest number on packaged food. But when I use a calculator my daily carbs are just one figure unless I go into every item one by one, guessing I am still using the higher figure. Just checked, for example oranges, 15.5 carbs of which 12.1 are sugars, 3.4 are dietary fibre – so yes, I use the top figure. of 15.5 – is that wrong, am cheating myself out of some grub

    Hi everyone
I emailed fatsecret yesterday – I’d tried to enter a food to the database, but got an error message saying that total carbs had to be higher than the grams of fibre. I emailed pointing out that it claims to be a UK website, the UK/US differences on carb figures, and asking for an explanation. It’s odd, I don’t check everything now, but did cross check most entries that I used for the first week or so, and the nutrition seemed pretty accurate.
I can see me going back to my trusty spreadsheet at this rate!

The journey down to Dorset was good. I heated my lunch before I left (in a Tupperware type container) & wrapped it inside a jacket in my luggage, and it was still perfectly hot when I ate it on the train about an hour later. I may have made the carriage stink of broccoli, but never mind!
Ann had made a delicious aubergine curry for supper, which was great, with lemon dhal, probably a bit carby, but I just had a small portion, spinach & pine nuts. Think I’ll ask Ann for the aubergine recipe.

Bit of guess work on quantities, but have just logged it and I think around 800 got the day and 50g of carbs.

    DAY 4 of 7

Not quite as in control yesterday
    Calories 797
    Carbs 35.6!!!

Sorry I asked the question about carbs going to carry on as before!! Just seem to be finding it really difficult to stay within 30 carbs. I just needed a square of chocolate last night hence the higher carbs but had to have it!

Going to persevere until the end of the 7 days but will then definitely increase my carbs to 40.

Anyway, the good news …. I have lost 4.2lbs so far this week, that’s the 2.6lb holiday gain plus 1.6lb extra! That also drops me down into the next stone so my next mini goal reached as well!!

Avila ( I think) read on the facebook site that people had a month off the 800 after 8 weeks and followed BSD principles for a month before doing another 8. Effectively I am doing that with being away for most of September. I know its early days yet, just 3 in, but I wonder if there is something in that.

    Have a good day.

    Hi Frog
I think that the UK uses net carbs minus the fibre and the US uses total carbs including the fibre. This was always helpful for me, being in the UK, because I didn’t have to deduct the fibre when calculating how much insulin to inject to cover my carbs.

When I set up fat secret I got it to display the fibre as well as carbs cals fat and protein. I was going to add the fibre to to the carb total and then changed my mind. I decided it was better for me to still know what the net carbs were because they are the ones that raise my blood sugars. I was also concerned that if I used total carbs it would cut down my carbs even more and mean that I was eating even less fibre than I am eating now. I am looking at the fibre as a separate and important part of my diet like the fat and protein. So I have probably been cheating because have been posting net carbs. So my 25s should be 30s and my 30s should be 35s approx.

Yesterday 32g carbs and 860 calories. This morning have had a special treat – black pudding with my egg. But later will make up for it by having a healthy salmon salad.

Because I don’t want to skimp on calories as I think between 750 and 800 is low enough, I will have a snack tonight of around 100 calories and no carbs and a square of very dark chocolate at 58 calories and 1 carb. Total 27.

It is working girls (I think we are all female)

    Day 1-4
    3.5lbs lost.
Just 1.5lb more and it’s another stone gone.
    Loving the reboot!!

It’s great to see a new number on the scales especially when you’ve been almost there for a while, well done Verano.

    Hi Everyone

had a lovely lunch out today – we just had a starter ans shared a salad. I had halloumi with tendetstem broccoli and a spicy dressing called chermoula, and the salad was butternut squash with pearl barley.

We were at a fantastic gallery in Somerset called Hauser & Wirth – a brilliant place.
We wandered around a deserted gallery with a Louise Bourgeois exhibition, only saw one other visitor. Lots of very exciting work, including the spider that was in Tate Modern when it opened. Stood alone in huge barn like gallery, just me, friend, and The Spider. Amazing experience.
Later we asked for directions to other parts of the gallery, and told that although the gardens and restaurants were open, very sorry ALL of the galleries were closed to the public because it was a “Press Day”. Apparently the private view is Saturday, and it opens to the public from Sunday.
So that was why it was soooo quiet and peaceful and we had the place to ourselves. Staff stationed at every door of the gallery after that!
Well worth a visit if you’re in the area. Beautiful gardens too.
