Question one : What do you all drink? I love coffee and usually drink more than 7 or 8 cups a day. I was doing LCHF so am used to cream but have changed to full fat mik. Don’t like tea or many of the fruit teas. So………… what do YOU drink?

Question two: Is there a list of ‘what to have in your cupboard’ foods anywhere to help me with my shopping lists?

    P.S. Am on day 2 & lost a pound and a half
Yesterday fasting blood sugar 6.9 today 6.2 Yeah!

These are good questions and not silly at all ๐Ÿ™‚ I’m a relative newbie myself but these are my answers (I’m sure some of the more seasoned BSD veterans have better answers for you)

    1. I drink lots of sparkling water cold from the fridge either with a squeeze of lime juice or some sugar free lime cordial in it. I love my coffee though, so still have coffee with full fat milk, can’t do without my morning coffee!

    2. Hmmm I don’t know if there’s a list but I guess just the storecupboard things for the dishes you like to eat most. I always have the following handy cos I eat lots of eggs yogurt fish and chicken:

    – total Greek yoghurt (full fat kind)
    – blueberries
    – flaked almonds from Tesco (I put them in my yoghurt, plus you can add them to curries or fish dishes)
    – canned chopped tomatoes
    – canned kidney beans
    – tomato puree
    – fresh tomatoes
    – lots of herbs and spices (for me cumin, coriander, paprika, mixed herbs, cinnamon get used the most – everybody’s different though)
    – thai green curry paste
    – chicken or veg stock pots
    – coconut milk
    – broccoli (I like tenderstem, and have it as my green veg most meals)
    – bags of salad
    – salmon/chicken breasts/turkey mince (I freeze if not using it immediately)

That’s all I can think of for now, I’m sure there’s more I use…will edit if I think of anything else.

Congrats on the weight loss and blood sugar reduction already! Fantastic result ๐Ÿ™‚

Great questions ARJAYTEE, not silly at all.

Drinks? I lov coffee too but I’m avoiding caffeine at the moment in a bid to rid myself of ME/CFS so I tend to drink, loads of green tea, sparkling water and plain old tap water and caffeine-free coke!

As for my store cupboard, like KARENV I make sure I have Greek yoghurt (full fat of course!) and lots of eggs, broccoli, courgettes, leafy veg
Plus my naughty items – popcorn (51 cals per, bag!)
    Toms
    Seasoning
    Ski mousse
    Dark chocolate -70%+

Those are the basics but I’m sure I’ve left loads out!

Well done on your first day. It’s amazing how quickly it works isn’t it!

I drink filter coffee (gave up sugar, yay! so chuffed with myself I stuck to that one) with full fat milk. Three cups in the morning, first thing. If I’m out I have White Americano.

    My go-to items are:
tomatoes (if you have the baby plum tomatoes, 6 of them are only 16 calories and 3 carbs – great for a sweet treat, eat slowly)
spring onions (less carbs than ordinary onions, and great flavour for the size of them. You can do most recipes with one)
    CHEESE!!!
    – Feta is wonderful (have 20 or 30g on baby spinach as a base for things when you might have rice or pasta or potatoes or toast)
    – Halloumi is also great, add it to your breakfast or for a salad. Nice grilled or dry fried
    – Babybel for a no carb snack – only 60 calories
    – Soft cheese with garlic (if you like it – you can find snack packs of it – mmm yummy)
    – Blue cheese like St Agur (I eat 20/30g of this with a spoon for an evening snack, it has the texture of cheesecake and great flavour)
    – Leerdammer cheese slices (wrap round cucumber or lettuce or chicory or smoked salmon as a lunch roll. Quite filling)
Vegetables (other than the tomatoes/spring onions mentioned above):
    – baby spinach. See above. Have 20g of this as base for nearly everything. Salt and pepper it generously. Lovely.
    – courgettes. These are a total godsend and are delicious. You can spiralise them, but I cut them into chunks and dry fry them on high heat so they go golden and char, and you can have 150gm of them for just 30calories and 3 carbs. Everyone likes them, even those who weren’t keen before I started this.
    – cauliflower. low carb but good as mash, roasted steaks.
    – chilli peppers. I have chillis with lots of things now, and also lots of spices, garlic, ginger paste, mustard seeds, cumin, you name it.
    – portobello mushrooms. Very very meaty
    – nuts. measure carefully, but you can add 10g of mixed nuts to your feta cheese and baby spinach base and it’s a lovely crunch.
    Protein
    – salmon fillet, cod fillet, other fish – either fried or cooked in foil in the oven (sometimes topped with tomatoes/onion/chilli mixture)
    – EGGS! omelettes, fried, poached, scrambled, frittata with veg (also good cold)
    – I don’t eat meat, so no meat suggestions, but OH adores his bacon in the morning and it certainly smells good.

These have kept me very very very happy and my goodness I’ve enjoyed them over these weeks. You may find that your tastebuds come alive, I certainly did. ๐Ÿ™‚

Thanks karenv , i have most of those things but will have to stock up on things like pulses as i haven’t used them for a long time. I enjoy stir fry type meals and curries so will just have to be very careful about portion sizes

Thanks nursebean, (great name) I daren’t do chocolate until I’m much further along the line as I know my weaknesses!! (there is some in the cupboard as I’m old enough not to like waste) Again, I have most of those things but not the mousse & popcorn, which I shan’t be getting! I think I’ll get along with this ok from what you’re all telling me.

arjaybee – re portion sizes, strongly recommend you get a little set of scales to put on your worktop.

Bit of a pain at first, but worth its weight in gold. OH is considering job at deli as he is now absolutely champion at measuring 30g or 40g or 50g of cheese exactly without having to add little slivers (or take them off) like I do!

Still can’t measure 150g of courgette without having a few slices left…..which I have to resist eating to tidy them up. Not the idea at all. ๐Ÿ™‚

Hi Igorasusual , I’m glad I’m typing that and not saying it ! You have given me a wonderful list . So i don’t have to not have coffee. Phew! I love my coffee so much i even buy it from a company on the internet who roast & grind small batches from specialist growers. I sometimes have decaff but do have the hard stuff in the morning!!
I’m surprised how much cheese you have mentioned. I was not sure if cheese was ‘allowed’ . I think i will have to print out these answers so that I can refer to them.

    Oh CHEESE!!!

It is wonderful. Hardly any carbs, lots of fat to keep you full, and good for protein as well. Did I mention delicious?

    Oh yes, it’s allowed.

Really recommend the feta on baby spinach (or chicory). You can have a little side salad of it, with a drizzle of olive oil and balsamic. Absolutely delicious. ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚

Cheese yes, but only 30 or 40 grams depending on which type, it is full of calories, as are nuts and avocados which have to be eaten in moderation. Sorry to be a party pooper.

You are right to point out the importance of measuring, Avila. However I’ve found 30 or 40g of cheese plenty enough for my purposes. All carefully logged as you say.

I don’t eat meat and probably the fewer calories in fish help me add more cheese in. It’s been great and I love it!

Sorry sorry meant to address the above to Sunshine Girl.

Thats okay, I get called all sorts of things??? I made the cheese comment because I looooooove cheese but in the past it has always given me high readings. Now I know it was not the cheese, it was the bread or biscuits I had with it. But now I can eat it with no ill effects I have to be careful not to go mad.
