I really need to work with this diet. I have found in the past that the only diets are high protein/low carb work out for me.

I am currently 5’6′ (168 cm) and 79 kg having lost 11 kg on the Dukkan Diet and kept it off for 18 months. I still have pre-diabetes fasting BSLs. and need to lose more as BMI still at the high end of overweight. I am upset and puzzled as I have liver problems despite being a moderate drinker. My mother had the same problems and they were unable to find out why. My specialist thinks this is due to the pre-diabetes. Anyway, I have cut out alcohol completely and had no problem doing that. What i am hoping is for the BSD to help with early signs of liver problems as well as pre-diabetes.
My Tanita Body Composition scales consistently read visceral fat at 10 but I do not understand what that really means.

    Too Many Questions:
    1. Has anyone found Inulin in Australia. I find very high fibre content fantastic for lowering BSLs but just have trouble tolerating those very high levels of fibre. Any suggestions? I saw a great program featuring Angela Rippon recommending Inulin but can’t easily obtain it in Australia.
    2. Could I introduce low sugar high fibre cereals like steel cut oats, brown rice, home made low sugar breads made with grains and seeds after the initial few weeks?
    3. Magic Rice products are great but not sure if OK with BSD- has anyone tried them?
    4. Has anyone tried going sugar free to reduce sugar cravings? I am really puzzled as to why I now crave sugar in the last few years whereas I had very little added sugar most of my life. Is that related to ageing or to the elevated BSLs?

Welcome aboard Kando – hope you settle into the new regime easily.

I’m not able to answer your question on Inulin in Australia as I’m in the UK and although it is easily available here, that’s no help to you! It’s okay to have small amounts of oats, but keep a watch on the carbs. Personally, I would avoid all breads as they are all pretty high in carbs.

Have used Magic Rice and it’s okay on the BSD, although generally, it’s best to avoid too much processed food. Used occasionally though, this can be a very useful addition to the menu, as it gives you a chance to have more ‘normal’ meals sometimes, without adding carbs.

As for the sugar cravings, this will happen initially on the BSD as your body gets used to the new regime, but eventually you will find the sweet stuff less and less appealing. On the BSD we are pretty much all sugar free as sugar is that thing we are all trying to avoid. Of course there will be the odd occasion that you include something sweet, but usually in the form of berries, a drizzle of honey, or a square of very dark chocolate. Unfortunately the problem is not just about the sugar you choose to add, it’s what has been added to food by manufacturers, which is why it is best to make from scratch wherever possible.

Cutting out alcohol is a great move as that will instantly reduce your calorie and carb intake. It is recommended that alcohol is avoided for the 8 weeks of the Fast 800. I’m on my second stint of 8 weeks and although I stuck to the no alcohol rule the first time round, I have transgressed a few times this time round and find when I do, it does mess up my weight loss results.

I hope some of this is helpful and my apologies if it’s not. Do please keep posting though, report your successes and shout out if there are things you need to ask, or if you need support – there are lots of lovely folks on here and someone will be there to help.

Thank you so much for the reply SunnyB. That is just the support I need to get this off the ground. I have been going through the forum posts and have found so much helpful information. I will keep looking for Inulin as it is supposed to be effective in clearing out visceral fat which is the basic cause of so many health problems. Angela Rippon was so brave letting them show MRIs that revealed her abdomen was absolutely packed with visceral fat although she looked normal weight and youthfully fit and healthy for her age of 72 years. That all helps a lot. Although it is wonderful that we are learning how to overcome lifestyle based diseases (Bad Habits), the horrible downside is the stigma and feeling of shame and blame so we beat ourselves up. Not helpful.
Can you anyone give me a rough idea of the desirable gram count for sugars, carbs, protein, fat? It is astonishing how much natural (not added) sugar is found in skim milk and yoghurt and when I added some tomatoes and onion to breakfast dishes even these innocent sounding vegies had a little natural sugar.
I use the MyFitnessPal website linked to my FitBit HR Charge to get readouts on nutrient content and my exercise.
Would you believe there is an Australian BSD website where they want to charge AUD 250 (about 120 British pounds) for a 12 week program? I think I will try to get started with the book and this free website and forum support.

That fee certainly sounds amazingly steep and especially when the book, forum and website is really all you need. Consider sugars and carbs as one entity and aim for no more than 50g per day. I cannot comment to the gram count for protein and fat, as I don’t keep a check on these – just cals and carbs. Sure someone out there will be able to offer an insight on these though.

Good luck with it all Kando – looking forward to hearing your results soon.
