Sorry I am late people. I have been trying to set up this new thread then realised I had to be logged in.

Well here we are in October, how did that come around so quickly. We hope you are all joining us for another months push to reaching our goals. You are going to hate me for this but I am going to tell you we have only 12 weeks to the dreaded ‘C’ word. I know this is a thread for the month but lets see how much progress we can make before the celebrations.

Going to start the month off with a motivational quote – If you kind of do it, it kind of works – if you really do it, it really works.

Lets make this optimistic October and really do it.

My first post on this October thread is to look at where I am. I lost 6lbs in August and I am only 2.5lbs up on that so still a loss of 3.5lbs overall. Looking at todays actual weight I want to lose 10lbs over the next 12 weeks. Not too much pressure at less than 1lb a week but we all know how life can throw things at us. After the excesses of the past 10 days (mainly alcohol) I am ready to really put my mind to this. On top of my normal dieting routine I am also doing Sober October.

For the month of October I am pleased to say I have NO medical appointments – just the hairdressers on the 19th.

    Have a great month everyone.

    Hello s-g!
Yes I’ll be here for a while …. not the whole month but certainly the first three weeks. You might be counting 12 weeks but I’m counting 17 until our next ‘big’ trip! One pound a week sounds doable to me but not sure if that allows me to be a bit too lax. Although, this week, with my 1lb loss target, I’ve actually gained 1lb! Taken myself in hand today drinking more warter and less food so fingers crossed!
Looking forward to October with much Optimism!

Thanks for the new thread SunshineGirl. I am joining in and intend to be more intentional at doing the low carb diet, than I have been.
Tonight, we were invited to go eat at this place, not even thinking, I dived into ordering a burger and potato tots! In my mouth I suddenly thought, o no! so, am up late sorting myself out and intend to make a go of this month but starting with this week…

Hi all, just a reply to Tulip. Glad your daughter is getting better. I had a burst appendix when I was 10 but besides that, when we were at our daughters a year ago my grandson started with pain and vomiting. As an ex-nurse I knew the signs for appendicitis and did the reflex test on him which was positive. The nurse rang my daughter for a consultation and said she would call an ambulance. It never turned up. Fortunately he was fast asleep and feeling better. 2 weeks later she rang and I could hear him screaming so I told her to just get him in the car and get to the hospital. They were very good at the hospital and he was seen immediately. He was operated on the next morning. Funnily enough he had appendicitis. The nurse made fun of me saying ‘oh so you used to be a nurse then’. I told her I could make a better diagnosis than she could by looking through the telephone. Stupid woman. Rant over. Thankfully he is fine and I am sure Tulips daughter will be.

Verano, yes I agree 1lb a week can be a bit on the low side and allow for treats to slip in. However, I know I can lose maybe 3lbs in week 1, 2lbs in week 2 etc then I hit week four and just stop. That is usually when I reach my plateau so I have to allow for that before things start moving again. That is a danger time when you can think what the heck but I know from experience if I continue to do the right things it will start to move again. My big trip is not until the end of April so I just want to get ‘C’ out of the way first.

    My motivational saying today is
If we always try we will win but sometimes you need to put a bit of umph in it to Triumph.

    Have a good week.

Thank you for setting up this thread S-G👍& I am in until I lose the rest of my excess weight. My next goal is to lose 6lbs by the end of October which will mean I have shed two stone in weight since January this year & joining here. Then it will be to lose another 1.5 stone to reach my goal weight when I will review how I look & feel. I don’t think I will manage all that before the end of this year & the dreaded & expensive “C” will get in the way & add some pounds in both ways🙁
Oh well best feet forward everyone & Tulip I hope your daughter will soon be discharged from hospital 👍
Good luck everyone for the rest of the week🍀🍀

I’ve had the most odd week. Eaten well, low carb not high calorie but have put on 1lb!!!!
So …. regrouped… had a day of ‘just eating’! I don’t eat high carb anyway, so it was mainly more fruit than normal, cheese, a packet of crisps… shock horror!!!
Anyway, the important thing is that I’m ready to restart tomorrow.
Hopefully next week will be better?
    Have a good week!

I started off yesterday trying to fast for the day but caved in because I was hungry when making my husband eggy bread for his lunch. I did manage to resist that & had a couple of Ryvitas with 30g of cheese & supper was the black chilli beans with mushrooms recipe from MMs Keto Diet book which is delicious. I’m trying to redress my rather calorific weekend when I was tempted to have a couple of glasses of wine & a small flapjack & ate above my BMR 🙀
Unfortunately for me I’ve now caught my husbands cold & I’m at the streaming nose & cough stage & have cancelled my social things this week to not spread it around which is very frustrating. I did wear a mask to collect some new size 14 cord trousers from M&S for autumn that I like which are slightly tight but I now have them hanging outside my wardrobe as an incentive to be able to soon wear them 😀
I hope everyone is doing rather better than me at the moment ?

Hi all, I too have had a poor start. Went out for the quiz and meal on Monday and the food was so bad I ended up just eating the mashed potatoes and a few chunks of baguette. Then I topped it off with a couple of glasses of wine. We came third in the quiz which is not bad when it is just me and hubby. There is no prize for third unfortunately but it would have been wine 🙂 Anyway I gained another pound.

Then I was poorly which the cough and cold we seem to have caught from youngest grandson. I spent most of the day in bed and ate nothing until dinner with was carb free. Then I awoke at around 3am feeling rather weird. Managed to stagger to the kitchen where I keep my blood testing kit and I was down to 2.5 so going into hypo. I had a emergency Werthers original then a slice of cold ham and went back up to a decent level and went back to bed. Feeling a lot better today and BG was up a bit (probably due to Werthers) but I have an upset stomach. All the best plans of mice and men Margaret. We cant control everything. I am down half a pound so will start counting from yesterdays weight and reset goal to an 11lb loss in 11 weeks because I go away the week before Christmas.

Bonne continuation and all that. KOKO

Oh dear S-G not good experiences for you! I hope you are feeling better today? As they say in Scotland “I took to my bed” this afternoon for a nap which has helped me feeling wobbly & achy & my husband is feeling better today on his day four so I guess I will follow a similar timetable. My husband & I both had covid jabs ten days ago & Hopkins University research suggests it also helps the common cold both being coronavirus’s which is interesting.
On we go then & I’m trying to lose 5lbs by the end of October & good luck reaching your weight goal🍀🍀🤞🤞

Hi everyone, cant say I am feeling any better, in fact worse as far as the cough goes. Tried to do a covid test this morning but the one and only test I had the liquid had completely evaporated. Anyway, don’t think it is covid as no temperature and no loss of taste. Just a hacking cough, sore throat and a cold.

Enjoy Australia Wendy – all very exciting with new baby on the way.

Verano, my pack of Purition has arrived so will try my first tomorrow lunch with 200ml of oat milk.

Despite the not feeling well I have already lost 1kg or just over 2lbs.

Wendy glad you’ve arrived safely now you can just ENJOY!

S-g sorry you aren’t feeling any better but glad you’ve lost 1kg. Hope you enjoy the shakes please let me know what you think. I used almond milk with mine but just can’t remember which my favourites were!

I have been just stuck on the same number for days after putting on 1lb. So I’ve experimented these last few days. Yesterday I had three meals, yogurt and berries, egg mayo on low carb bread and salmon with mashed cauliflower and green beans. I felt satiated all day. This morning saw a slight drop on the scales. Today I decided to go back to my usual two meals a day so no breakfast and sardines for lunch but was ‘looking for something’ afterwards. So head in the fridge for a lot of the afternoon! When I first started on this path I was eating three meals a day and it worked. So I think for the moment I’m going to eat three meals a day and see what happens.

Hi everyone, actually feeling worse today with a hacking cough keeping me and hubby awake most of the night. But to be fair he does keep me awake talking to the cat. All I can hear is ‘No Toby’ ‘Move over Toby’, He says the cat disturbs him but then he has to wake me up even when I don’t have a cough.

Did a covid test and it was negative.

I don’t know what is happening but my asthma doctor has cancelled my appointment for next week as she is ill but will see me in December – I have enough meds to see me through. Then today I had a call from the ophthamologists secretary to say he is seriously ill and will not be seeing any patients ever. I will have to get my doctors advice as I have to see someone who is a specialist not just an optician. It was my ophtha….. who discovered the problem with blood flow to my brain and hence the recent surgery. On the bright side I have an appointment with my dentist next week – very quick to get an appointment – and I havent seen her for 2 years due to me being ill so I will see if I need anything doing. So that’s a medical appointment in October. Thought I had got away with it.

I hear the UK will be getting some of our hot weather so I hope you all enjoy the weekend.

I’m still here, mostly lurking and keeping low carb wherever possible, but not actively tracking anything at the moment.
Monday to Thursday I am doing TRE, eating 2 meals a day (lunch and supper) of low carb and trying to control portion sizes.
This morning I weighed 12st 5.8lb, my lowest weight in a few months, so happy with that.

I have also been ill of late, as has hubby, but we also tested negative – maybe we all still get sick, it’s not just Covid that’s around, although I am hearing of a lot of people contracting covid again recently.

Good weather forecast for the UK weekend, I hear the garden calling for that last pre-winter sort and clear.

It will soon be 3 years since hubby and I started this journey when he was diagnosed pre-diabetic, he is still low carb and mostly maintaining at a good weight (albeit half a stone holiday gain is proving stubborn) and his last blood tests were good.

KOKO as S-G would say 🙂

RubyG my husband is a Type 2 diabetic but since losing his excess weight four years ago & mostly eating low carb with me has mostly maintained his weight loss & although still taking some meds was able to stop one diabetic one. We sound as though we are doing similar things with me also eating two meals a day & following TRE. I’m hoping I have lost some weight this week & will find out tomorrow when I weigh. I’m still plodding on trying to have lost two stone since January which will really encourage me to keep on going.
I hope everyone has a great weekend 👍

I’m still plodding on trying to reach my first goal of losing two stone this year since joining here in January & low carb eating. I have 4.5 lbs to lose to get there & am aiming to do this by the end of October then it’s losing a further 1.5 stone to reach my upper end goal weight of ten stone.

Hi everyone, great news with the weight loss Margaret. You have set yourself realistic goals and I am sure you will be where you want to be by the end of the year.

Hi RubyG, nice to see you are still around, glad hubby is still having good results. Blooming heck, has it really been 3 years. I bet this is the best thing you have done for yourselves.

1960 just wanted to ask if you are on any meds that you can get rid before thinking of going lower than 48. I am going to look it up as I use a different set of numbers. Looked at it and I am no wiser except I think 48 is normal. Depends on whether that is with or without meds.

I too am still recovering and although my cough is looser I am still streaming with cold. The pool is warm and so is the weather but I don’t think I will be going in until I am feeling up to it. Maybe tomorrow.

    Have a great warm weekend.

1960 I have just found my own HbA1c which is measured as a percentage but is 45 on the scale you are using. I gives a warning that I might be diabetic and the doctor should be aware. Obviously I am and he knows and at the percentage of 6.3% I know I should be lower at around 5.5% which is about 38. Not saying you should be going lower, check on a diabetes chart for what is normal and what is diabetic. Again with the question as to whether you are still on meds. At least you will be able to discuss it with your nurse from a place of knowledge.

Go onto Diabetes UK site and find the page called Blood Sugar Level Ranges.

Hi everyone, I am feeling a lot better but not quite up to having a swim in what is quite cold water at around 22 degrees. Although it is a very hot temperature here today at 31 it doesn’t feel too hot but I am hoping the sun will warm the pool up a bit. Maybe tomorrow.

1960 I have answered you on the other thread so won’t make any comment here.

My weight is slowly going down even without exercise as we know it is what we eat that is important. I have only used the shakes once and been eating real food but I will supplement a couple of meals during the coming week.

    Hi everyone,
I am back after narrowly missing getting Covid and having to be in self-isolation for 10 days. I was at a workshop and the guy next to me was sniffling right from the beginning. I didn’t do anything in response at first because I reasoned it could just be allergies (mine have been bad this fall). Anyway, by the morning break, it was clear that he was actually sick as he started coughing and sneezing and blowing his nose. He put a mask on after the break, but as I could smell his cough drops even through my own mask, I eventually just got up and stood at the back of the room. Luckily he didn’t come back after lunch. We were later notified that he tested positive for Covid. I feel very fortunate not to have caught it. I’m due for my next jab next week and it would have been very disappointing to have got Covid before I could receive it. Given that lipedema is an inflammatory condition and Covid increases inflammation, the lipedema experts are advising to do as much as we can to avoid being infected, but of course with cases so much on the rise right now, that will be difficult.
I’m in my final push of the farming season with garlic planting. I’m also digging up and dividing and moving my daffodils as they were getting too crowded and weedy where they were. It’s a tiring time of year after a long season of hard work, but the end is in sight. I need all the energy I can muster, so I’ve put off longer fasting for now and I’m eating 3 meals a day. Trying to keep things healthy, but I will have Thanksgiving dinner tonight. The meal itself is not too bad as it is mostly just veggies for me, but there will be pumpkin pie. I think I will burn it off quite easily through the rest of the week, so hopefully will not do too much damage.

Gosh lots of work for you to complete before the end of your growing season & a good luck with that. My husband & I are due to get our flu jabs next Saturday & had our covid ones a couple of weeks ago with no side effects for us.
S-G pleased you are feeling better today & swimming in chilly water doesn’t sound at all appealing 🤔
Best feet forward everyone for next week & today my husband & I got out in the almost too warm sunshine & visited Polesden Lacey a National Trust Edwardian house & gardens which was lovely but hugely busy with other visitors accompanied by their children & dogs! I don’t think I’ve been surrounded by so many people since before covid so it was rather overwhelming with the noise of many children & dogs yapping & barking. We did managed to find some quiet sitting in the walled rose garden which was a tranquil oasis for awhile before rejoining the hubbub!!
Anyway for us now almost recovered from our colds we will return to playing short mat bowls tomorrow although I must admit my stamina from doing mostly nothing last week , self isolating with our cold, is rubbish so I do need to get much fitter.
I hope you all have a good week.

Hi everyone, as usual Arctic is busy working hard. I don’t know how you do it but then I don’t know your age. It is only in the last 2 years that I have started to feel really old and tired which is why I really want to crack the weight which should help me be more active. Not sure the asthma is doing me any favours.

2nd day with a shake for lunch and I enjoyed it very much. Would have been better if hubby wasn’t sat next to me eating a toasted cheese and ham sandwich. Fortunately, I don’t have to make it for him. Tonight will be a bolognaise style meat dish with my final baby sized courgette spirallized. Although I do have one more courgette left which is quite big and I was going to throw it away but the Yorkshire in me said ‘that will make a lovely plate of fritters’.

Feeling a lot better and almost back to normal. I am very tempted by the pool this afternoon as we have temperatures of 31 so I don’t want the rest of summer to go to waste. Because it is cold at night (around 12 to 14 degrees) the pool water is dropping every day so I need to take my chances. Last year I swam in November in 16 degrees. I won’t be doing that again. Brrrrrrr.

Have a good week. My weigh in is tomorrow.

This is the end of week one for me and I set my original goal of 10lbs by Xmas then gained one so my goal is 11lbs. Which is fine as I was 11 weeks from my trip. This week I have lost 3.75lbs or 1.7kgs. Puts me in a good position but I know that around week 3 or 4 there will be a stand still and this might just keep me to the 1lb a week average. New goal is now 7.25 in 10 weeks.

Had a lovely swim yesterday. Don’t know why I put it off when I enjoy it so much. Hopefully, I will have another 30 mins later today. It is a bit too hot right now at 29 degrees but these warm days are not set to last much longer so I need to take advantage.

Had a shake for lunch – coconut flavour – and so far they have been very nice. I do keep waking up and having to check my BG so quite happy to stick to one a day (rather than 2 meals of shakes) and maybe not even every day.

Hope you are all doing great and taking good care of yourselves.

Hi all, another swim yesterday and I do love it so much once I get over the initial shock of cold water, although it is not cold cold water, just around 23 degrees.

I have the dentist this afternoon and, as she can talk the hind legs etc, I am hoping to be home by 5pm, in time to get another swim in. We are going to see a big change in the weather around Friday. Dropping from 30/31 to 21 degrees so the pool will also drop and Thursday might be my last swim of the season. Although last year I swam until the 4th November (FB reminds me).

Margaret, how was Swan Lake. I saw it many many years ago when I lived in Australia with my first husband. It was the Kirov ballet. A couple of years ago we saw it while on a cruise and docked in St Petersburg. The ending was totally different and I thought I had got it all wrong until I read up on it. Apparently the Russian emperor at the time hated the idea of Odette being killed so he changed the ending. Funny really as he was always executing people 🙂

    Have a good week.

S-G Swan Lake was different danced by a small company of excellent dancers & Odette did survive which was unexpected because I was also expecting a darker ending. The part of Odile was danced by another dancer & they did appear on stage together which I don’t remember seeing before & the poor prince had to go hunting by the lake on his own because I don’t think their were enough male dancers to go around😀 However there were good costumes & the story well told with even my husband understanding most of it!! We enjoyed it & there was an orchestra playing which was mostly very good. I would love to be able to go up to Covent Garden to see The Royal Ballet but it’s so expensive going up on the train, eating out & then the ticket prices. We have fortunately seen a few Russian ballet companies visiting two or three years ago but they are now banned because Ukraine but I believe there is now a Ukrainian ballet company made up of exiled Ukrainian dancers that is a touring company in Europe.
I hope everyone is having a good week & I’m trying to keep low carb & around 8-900 calories a day & continuing on TRE.

    Hi everyone,
Another long day for me. I started out in the garden at 8:30am and finished at 7pm with only a 1/2 hour break for lunch. Really hard going too as I discovered that a large section of my manure bin didn’t actually compost (I didn’t realize how dry it was) and I had to dig through the whole thing to find the part that did. And to top it off, a wasp came out of nowhere while I was doing that and landed on my arm and stung me before I could brush it off. I honestly would have given up and packed it in for the day at that point (2:30 pm) but I have a young lady coming in the evenings this week to help me plant the garlic, and I need to have all the beds prepared before she arrives, so that has kept me going the last 2 days. We’ve planted 600 cloves so far, but sadly that’s not even half yet.
S-g – I’m not sure how I work like this at times either. I have always had good natural endurance though, and I think my former training as an endurance athlete (modern pentathlon) helps me out a lot to mentally push through when things get tough. And I am 48, so I don’t get to be retired just yet. Well done with your swimming, btw. I packed it in last month when my parents pool hit 24. It was winterized this week, so even though it has been warmer this week, the season is done for us. I’m hoping to be able to get into town for some aquafit classes once I have some more time available.
Dinner this evening was salmon in phyllo with a creamy kale slaw salad and full fat greek yogurt to finish. Higher calorie and slightly higher carb with the phyllo, but a conservative estimate is that I burned over 2000 calories in that gardening session today, so hopefully that will be ok.

    Hi everyone,

Margaret, that is good news, looks likes you are going to reach your goal. I too am doing well. Loss so far is just under 5lbs for October. Not going to get complacent as I know a plateau will be coming soon.

Saw dentist and need to go back for a light cleaning. She kept us so long it was too late for me to swim without needing a snack first but too late for a snack as dinner would be soon after. Swam yesterday and, although I enjoy it, it is probably the last of this season. I can go to the oldies morning swim at the local pool but I am now going to test myself on yoga, aerobics etc, to see how my asthma holds out.

The weekend is looming and I am still doing sober October with no deviations (except I started a day late). Although our next quiz has been brought forward from 7th November to 30th October for Halloween. I will see how I feel as I am not putting any pressure on myself in the category of being good or bad. Just being me and getting on with things.

    Have a good weekend.

So weigh in this morning for me. I am 5 pounds lighter! I am happy but would have liked a lot more but I have had a bit of a week to say the least so 5 is better than hoped for…

Hope everyone has a restful weekend and is feeling good about where they are in their journey…

Wow 1960smp losing 5 lbs in a week that brilliant very well done 👏👏👏
I often serve an avocado with poached eggs & you can also bake them with an egg & it does add some moistness. I also eat them cut up in salads.
I weighed again & lost another 1/4lb so this last week lost 1.75lbs & in the last five weeks a total of 10.5lbs which I am pleased with but need to keep battling on to lose another three pounds to have lost two stone since January 2023.
My husband & I are having our flu jabs this morning then off to play short mat bowls because of our clubs open day today. I hope my jabbed arm holds up because I always have them in my right arm because of my mastectomy & lymph nodes removed on my left side. Today is much cooler although sunny so I can wear my new chunky jumper😀
I hope everyone has a good weekend 🤞

Well done Wendy, s-g and 1960 all going in the right direction. Looks like everyone is having a good October .
Avocado … I usually just take out the stone and fill the cavity with salmon or tuna with a touch of mayo, vinegar or lemon juice and a touch of Tabasco.

Hi everyone, hope you are having a great weekend. The weather has turned to Autumn here in France with temperatures down to around 18 degrees. Looks like the pool is finished as I am getting older and not stupid enough to swim at under 20 degrees (water temp).

Had a small gain in the last couple of days – around 1lb. But not worried as I look at the calendar and see it is my menstrual time even though I haven’t had a period for 25 years or more. Funny how our bodies can remember, but if they are still working on way stoneage people ate and their cicadian rhythms then why shouldn’t my body remember 25 years ago. Anyway, I know there will be a drop in the next day or so if I just hold my nerve. Tempted to have a drink tonight but, despite my diet I am also doing sober October and want to stick with it.

Avocado, do you know you can mash it with cocoa powder for an avocado mousse – you would need to look up the recipe as I have never actually tried it. Although a friend makes a lovely avocado and chocolate cheesecake.

New week coming so lets keep up the enthusiasm and KOKO.

    Hiya
It’s got so far through the month already! Thank you all for the kind wishes….my daughter (and I stayed with her) ended up in hospital for 16 days as she had post-op complications (was a very bad burst appendix)….
she’s doing well in recovery at home now 🙂
I’m exhausted after keeping everything running and a lot of stress prior to her illness as well, but I hope to slowly pick up.
Love to all- well done to everyone making progress and glad Wendleg is safely in Australia 🙂
    Love to all,
    Tulip xxxxx

Dont seem to be able to post. AAh it has let me, kept bringing up a scammer programme.
Anyway, what I was saying is…
Lost 1lbs this week, should have been 2 but I had a bit of a blip. Total for 2 weeks is now 4lbs. Because I have already done a long post that was rejected I am not quite in the mood to repeat.

Just hope you are all doing well and having a good week.

Well done s-g losing weight. I fasted until supper last night & have just weighed & seem to have increased rather than decreased my weight 🤔🙁 To keep on track I need to lose at least two pounds before I weigh on Saturday & I’m playing short mat bowls this morning & I will try another fast until supper today then have a WI evening meeting with cake temptations 🙀 to resist! This week has turned out to be more social than ideal with a Tom Jones tribute dinner at the bowls club where my best food option to choose is scampi & chips 🙀 & then lunch at a friends house on Sunday. I’m going to have to fit more steps in this week & also try to do some aerobic exercises 🤞🤞
I am feeling slimmer now with even more unflattering flab appearing that all I suppose I can do is keep my elderly skin well moisturised hoping it will eventually reduce & has retained enough elasticity to look less wrinkly & unattractive🤔
Tulip it’s wonderful to hear that your daughter is out of hospital & is recovering well 👏👏
Good luck everyone & keep on going👍

Hi everyone, I was so fed up with the new scammer catcher yesterday that I couldn’t be bothered to do a proper post. Obviously it was just set up to catch the regulars who are posting quite legitimately as I have seen a couple of scams get through – so why didnt it stop them. Rant over.

Still the same weight as yesterday but as I said on another thread, hubby cooks on Tuesdays and he cant get his head around sausage, beans and egg not being exactly healthy. I just let him get on with it as it means I get a night off. I am going to have to make sure he always has something healthy in. I usually steer him towards the chicken and we always end up with a curry – ugggh.

I have just started a paid for 30 day chair yoga course. You have to do it every day or you lose it – it moves on. Anyway, it is a lot of gentle stretching but I need that as I seem to have knots and stitches all over. Will report back. I am hoping with that and maybe losing more weight I will be able to get back to normal aerobics. Maybe after I have seen my asthma doctor as I still cant get my breath after small amounts of exercise or even taking a show, getting dressed etc. It is not normal and I am not cured by the meds.

Hope you are all doing well and having a successful October.

Hello just wanted to pop in and say ‘hello’ and to say I hope all those with health issues, including friends and family, are all progressing in the right direction.

Just into the last 2weeks of the month so there’s time to still end the month with ‘optimism’ whether that be improved health or weight loss or improved self-esteem or all three …. it’s a win win situation!

This month had been a good healthy eating month for me so far and intend to carry on to the 31st and beyond.

    Enjoy the rest of October!
