    Hi Hashimoto,
I had an issue two years ago with my house and contents insurance. My provider had changed the company providing their insurance cover and sent me a new policy. Fortunately I read the new policy and did not just accept it as I had made no changes. My home is listed and the previous policy had not asked about that. Suddenly there was a clause saying the building was NOT listed. When I advised them it was they double the price.
It was only days before the insurance ran out, so I started looking from new insurance and every quote I could get via the internet companies did not include listed buildings.
I found a website that ‘specialised’ in difficult to insure properties and put in the details on line. It was still much more than I wanted to pay, and I was worried if this site was trustworthy. I called Which? to ask advise on the company and if they could recommend any providers specialising in listed buildings. They pointed me to the British Insurance Brokers Association for independent advise. I called them and they put me onto a specialist broker. The broker I spoke to was fantastic. He went through a series of questions, and has access to policies you don’t get via the internet providers, but also knew the things that could reduce the price that many standard policies throw into the price – eg cover for my bike, extra £10 a month. It is 20 year old and I could replace it for less than the insurance cover!
End result, it was cheaper than my initial quote that had assumed my house was not listed, and the policy was still with a recognised provider.
If you have an unusual set of conditions that won’t fit ‘standard’ policies, I would advise you talk to a broker. I saved over £300.

    good luck

    Hi Judith,
Sorry about your travel insurance problems. Don’t the insurance companies realise there’s a reciprocal agreement between Britain and Aus? You will get treated here if you have the paperwork done before you leave England.
Here was me worrying you’d get 3 winters in a row if you came over soon, that’s the least of your troubles! Ridiculous amounts of money they are asking. 🙁

Bill, I’m actually really nervous about it! I had always planned on going when I retired – then I had to retire early because of health issues and until the BSD diet I simply wasn’t well enough to contemplate it. Sadly my wonderful uncle (out in Oz) is terminally ill so I can’t wait any longer. 🙁
Last time I went out was 28 years ago and it knocked the stuffing out of me. I’m not stopping over anywhere this time, just a few hours in Dubai for the connecting flight, so it really will feel like forever!
Can’t wait to see my family out there so that is the silver lining! I’m also going to meet up with Cherrianne which is wonderful 🙂

Thanks for that Ruth, I’ll check further as your experience is really interesting.
I know that a concern is that I have had over 4 lung infections in the last 12 months – but they were all before I was put on azithromycin – talking to a real person may make a big difference as there are just tick boxes on the online sites. Also I could send them the peak flow charts to show the improvement in my asthma. late onset asthma is more uncontrollable so is a big issue with regards to risk assessment.
With cancer in remission they would not expect a mid-flight emergency but with my asthma, allergies, bronchiectasis, lung infection history they will be concerned that I could have a mid flight medical emergency, especially with air that is just recirculated for hours.
Still, I will follow your advice and see what I can get. I’d rather spend that money on holiday clothes/nice meals out than on insurance! 🙂

    HI Judith,
At least you will get a baseline to compare others from. Hope it works – also sometimes you get a reduction if you have some other insurance with a company! I got a 15% reduction when I took my 2 weeks UK holiday insurance cover through LV as I had car insurance with them. That was by far the best quote for me.

One last thing Judith, check all other policies you have – house and contents etc. You are likely to be covered under them for say £1000 for valuables you take out the house, and possibly money theft. You don’t need that on your holiday insurance, you can’t claim off of both policies so you will be paying twice!
    🙂

Re travel insurance – you can always walk into a high street insurance broker and ask them to get you quotes. Sure they get a commission out of it from the underwriter, so you might not get quite as cheap as going direct, but they earn it by knowing which companies are the best for varying problem – it’s their job.

It’s also up to them to handle the negotiations and do the paperwork.

    Worth a try.

I was sooo pleased with the scales this morning, I honestly thought I would have put at least five pounds on, not 1lb 6oz!
My hubby is amazed too as I was having the odd ice cream lots of green and blacks chocolate for my ‘supper’ I also had a couple of chips and a couple of half slices of white bread toast!

Hi Lucia, A few words words of encouragement..I was not that heavy – 11 stone (154 pounds) – but I’m only 5’7″.
Being told I needed additional medication made me look again at what I could do myself. I started the BSD 8 weeks ago. My last hba1c reading had been over 9 (62 in medical speak). I felt I could not do as little as 800 calories a day so I did what I felt I could do – i.e. low carbs, more protein, portion control and a bit more exercise. Although I already rode my bike for about 40 minutes 2/3 times a week and played badminton, I have added the “HIT” idea mentioned in the book. I walk more and do 15 sit ups 3 times a week. I also fast at least 12 hours overnight every day, often more like 13 or 14 depending on my will power! I now weigh 10st 1¼ (65kg). I had my first quarterly check up since starting the BSD this morning following my blood tests last week. I knew from my own readings I was doing better but was pleasantly surprised to be told my average for the quarter was 44 – the uppermost point of the non-diabetic scale (26-44). I am going to ask to reduce my medication. So, even if you can’t get as low as 800 calories (and you do feel the hunger pangs less the longer you stick to it). The one time my readings went back up was when I slipped into having a bit of milk in tea and porridge. I read this: http://www.marksdailyapple.com/dairy-insulin/ and it is highly insulinogenic. I dropped it and my readings improved again.
I’m not that strong willed – if I can do it anyone can. Go for it!

    Hi Judith,
I am A rh positive, I get bitten all the time and react, once got stung by a wasp, the poison travelled up my arm to the extent I had to get a dr to treat it, ( we were abroad) the same happened the next time I was stung.
I was bitten by a spider when we were in oz, the friends we were with insisted I went to the Drs, I was there six hours waiting to be seen, by the time I was seen not only was my arm twice the size, my leg had also swollen up, I had been bitten twice, I got treated and was given a second lot of stuff, ‘just in case’ needless to,say I’m careful now with everything creepy crawlie!
My daughter got bitten by a mozzie when she was in Malaya and Thailand after uni, for six weeks, she did a lot of travelling, she ended up when she got home being hospitalised for weeks, about six or seven in Leeds, she had Japanese encephalitis! We have been ultra careful about mozzies since!

    Falling off the wagon attitude.

Hi gang , I watched a video on the daily mail of a gymnast falling off the bars, her coach saving her and she got more chalk on her hands and finished the exercise.

    Wow!
What a roll model for me.
She must have been so embarrassed in front of hundreds of people.

I felt guilty falling if the wagon on this diet. But if that kid can do it, so can I.

The coach is all of you lot, watching me, coaching me, ready to grab me if I fall.
    Let’s finish the exercise together….

Now will someone give me a bunk up to that top bar, Bill, I hope you are wearing your leotard too,

    Hi all,

I’ve been lurking for weeks now and following people’s amazing achievements and attitudes so thought I’d join in a bit.

I’ve had a few high blood pressure readings lately despite being the same (over)weight for years and it always being normal so thought I’d look around for a new way of eating.. I think falling off the wagon is a good thing if your wagon consists of all the evils that we’re avoiding. You can run alongside and even overtake it then. Leaving it behind for good.

So in my mid-forties, this is the first diet I’ve done properly although I may have dabbled with Atkins in the past.

I don’t have the problem with full fat stuff as I never believed the hype but I have had problems with portion control.

Anyway I’m at the stage where I had my first blood sugar test and it came up a bit sus so I have to have another one on Thurs morn and hopefully it’ll go a lot better.

    Hi the polly

I read the blogs for a good few weeks before I registered.
I wished I had started it at Christmas, but hey, I am getting there.

This website is fantastic, a section on recipes. Blogs on what did you eat today.
There is one crazy bird who tells you of her weird ways of dealing with success and failure. Be careful in case the crazy rubs off and you catch it.

There are wonderfully knowledgeable and sharing people, eg Hashimoto, captain Lynn and Bill 1954.

There are youngsters on such as Christie 1948, and cherry Anne.

There are good friends here too but too many to mention.

Keep paddling around the website, enjoy yourself and start the blood sugar 800 diet.

    HI Lucia,

still here, today is day 12 for me and the day I found out that I am very probably type 2 diabetic… so it seems I did start this diet just in time.

The scales ( i think they are distantly related to yours) have been telling me that I’m heavier than I was at the drs. 13 st – can’t remember when I last weighed that.

I think I need to eat 3 meals not 2 which is what I’ve been doing so that I can have more calories at each meal. Think that 3 will keep me on a more level thingy so will try that from tomorrow 🙂

Bacon slicers are not the way forward!
