Hi, I think this is quite a helpful thread. I started on Wed 26th Oct so I have completed 1 week. My stats are as follows:

Plan: 800 kcal and <20g carbs. Allowing alcohol 1-2 times a week and 1 ‘cheat meal’ a week (so not strictly following the BSD)
    Female – Age 40
    Height 5″3
    Start weight: 10.5
    Weight today: 10.1
    Goal weight: 9.0

    Hi
LesleyDot, may I ask why you are going for under 20g carbs? My understanding is we need 15-20g per day minimum.
Unless you know better, please take care. 40g carbs is still pretty damn low but it can keep you on BSD more comfortably. Just bare that in mind if you waiver/feel poorly but you are not sure why. I hope you don’t mind me saying. I am open to being proved wrong if you have science to back up your decision. I only mean to help. All the best

Hi there, no not at all and thankyou for your advice! To be honest, I’m happy to keep my carbs under 30 (which I see a lot of people are) but I’ve found with the foods that I’m eating (eggs, salmon, prawns, chicken, nuts & seeds + green leafy veg) that I’m typically under the 20 level anyway. I won’t be overly strict with it anyway…and obviously I’m having a cheat meal a week, so I expect to feel okay. And I’ve followed a fairly low carb diet for years now (probably between 40 – 50), so I’m not expecting to feel the ‘initial’ side effects. Thankyou for your message, much appreciated x

Hi Fact &Figure followers — saw your comments about carbs and although I probably sound like a broken record, because I have mentioned it before, there is an excellent book on the latest research regarding low carb diets — it is “Why We Get Fat and What To Do About It” by Gary Taubes — I found it immeasurably useful for its discussion of how refined carbohydrate makes us fat because then I understood what was going on with my body — it includes the Duke University low carb diet at the back of the book — which is 20 grams of carb per day. Remember this is NET carbs so you subtract the fiber from the carb count. It leaves plenty of room for piles of green vegies and even some pulses like lentils. You can, of course, eat more carbs if you prefer but it helped me immensely to keep my carbs very low during the low calorie phase of the BSD and now on maintenance, I am still staying low (less than 40-50 per day) and I have found maintenance easy, filling and happy. Try it both ways for a bit (you know a week or two or more) and evaluate for yourself just how many carbs your own metabolism can handle every day. Everyone has their own sweet spot — other people’s experience may not have relevance to your body/metabolism. Your goal is to get your insulin levels down and the general rule is “carb-drives-insulin-drives-fat”.

Morning everyone. I really hope you are all well and sticking with it. Here’s my stats
    End of week 2
Fasting blood glucose 6.1 (up slightly)
Body mass 194.2lbs (loss of 4.4lbs this week)
    Total weight loss about -10lbs
Body fat was 37.6% on unreliable scale, I’m dehydrated this morning so not taking that reading to heart.
I’m going to keep on going, finding it tough last few days. Emotional triggers just make me want to give up and binge on chocolate, but just can’t go on that downward spiral anymore.
On the plus side, 10lb loss is the best part of a stone in 2 weeks so that is rapid and encouraging, If I can get down to 13 stone for Christmas, I could get out of the obese category by the end of Feb.

    Hi
Nursecathy – thanks for posting your figures, I am so glad you are feeling great, I hope that stays with you throughout. Good weight loss…and I think that is wise to drop the artificial sweeteners. Last time I did a low carb diet I ate lots of zero carb crap to get me through, but I think I actually messed up my digestive system and perhaps that’s why I gained sooooo much weight, quicker than normal, when I started eating my ‘normal’ carbs again (i.e I went back to eating chocolate and biscuits every day which of course would have led to weight gain anyway)

Sandylane – thanks for sharing your stats, you are a little ahead of us and you are inspiring us. Your figures show healthy downward trends for weight loss and blood glucose…And inches off the waist too πŸ™‚ Well done

jmarie 41 – you are half way and doing fantastically well to be able to exercise too. I used to be very sporty but really struggle with lethargy/depression so hard to get myself going. I have done some sporadic short work-outs but I have to fight the constant negative thoughts and occasional light headedness. But you are inspiring me that it can still be done so I will persist.

If it helps to keep posting, then do.

Thank you for the feedback Pace!
I appreciate your comment on my workouts! It hasn’t been easy as I have been so tired eating low carb; especially when I work out. My heart rate goes a lot higher than when I’m not eating low carb.

The other part I didn’t share was that I am looking at a partial knee replacement down the road. My orthopedic surgeon is allowing me to make the decision as to when I am ready to have the surgery. I am currently going through a series of 3 shots-one a week for three weeks- where a lubricant is injected into my knee. It will take a good 6 weeks after the final shot to see if this works for me. I am crossing my fingers it does. My younger brother had a partial knee replacement a few months ago and did well! I have been diagnosed with osteoarthritis of the knees so that is part of my reason for wanting to lose a good amount of weight. I know the pressure extra weight puts on my knee joints and I am hoping to change that.

I also realized I did not give my height statistic–I stand proud at 5 ft tall!!! :–)

Pace; I hope you will give exercise a good try! I worked out today–did my weight training and then elliptical for 30 minutes. I wanted to quit so badly! After 2 minutes I was ready to stop and felt so weak and tired but I kept remembering how much I want to lose weight and that working out is part of what will get me there and hopefully help me not have as much loose skin after I lose a lot of weight. I also have read that exercise can be just as effective as an anti-depressant in helping with depression.

Well, missed posting on the 9th by a while – got through Thanksgiving OK – blood sugar 140 about 2 hours after meal – did have some mashed potato, and a small slice cheesecake (my birthday also – someone made a gluten-free cake for me – could not really turn that down). but did not bring the rest home – kudos for that ! I find my whole attitude and reaction to food has really shifted – I like food, I like to cook, but cravings now are a warning that I haven’t eaten enough – not a reason to eat anything available – I usually grab some almonds.
no gym for a week and weight stayed at 171# !! down from 202# in July 2016
question for forum: I talked today w/ pharmacist- a ‘diabetes specialist’ w/in my health plan – told him of my eventual goal to eliminate the Metformin (now taking 750 mg w/ breakfast and 500 mg w/dinner). His reply was that reversing T2 isn’t possible as, by the time one is diagnosed and A1c has been out of normal range, that diabetics have approx 25% of our beta cells left.
This isn’t a deal-breaker for me; I feel better, energy is better, and I figure I have nothing to lose but weight.
So, one week of less-close monitoring and now utterly ready to dive back in.
3 days this week were just over 800 cal – rest no higher than 1300 cal.

thanks – just scanned some of that – very interesting stuff – I believe the diabetes was developing over about 5 yrs – doc never said anything but “eat more salad, eat fewer desserts” and perhaps I would feel better if I lost weight. Then that rapid up-ramp happened over about a yr – BG 124—>381 – I got very educated overnight, dumped that doc and got one who is more involved- though I was asked by him to justify why I wanted an A1c again this January after just having one in October. “you’re doing so well – you are relying too much on labs” ….. I kinda like objective data …….
I am just stubborn enough (and quite motivated) to chart my own course w/ regards to this – the pharmacist (chemist) is hesitantly supportive though he doesn’t believe in reversal.
I hesitate to just go off the Metformin and I am not looking for advice – but I don’t see (haven’t read every forum entry) reference to tapering Metformin – just talk from individuals lowering, adjusting various other drugs and insulin.
Right now, I have decreased the Metformin by 250 mg per day and will see what are my averages in BG after 2 weeks. I have morning elevations into the 115-124 even if 2hour-post-dinner readings are lower than that.
Thanks for the info – will share it.

raintoday- If you’ve not seen it, you might want to check Bill1945’s thread ‘this has to work for me’ – just type that thread name in the search box.

Bill was on Metformin and successfully reduced all his medication.
