Anybody have any idea how much is a cup. Ive been looking on the internet for different recipes. The ones I can find state 1/2 a cup or a cup. I cannot find how much that equates to in weight i.e. ounces or grams. PLEASE anybody help!!!

Hello, in Dunelm yesterday I saw some measures that were so much bigger than spoons that I stopped to have a look. They were like doll’s tea party sized pans but graduated in sizes of fractions of a cup! I noticed they had gms/ml marked on them as well but I did not buy them. Check on line for them they will be widely available, I expect… No doubt somebody else will have a better idea. I weigh and have a spreadsheet to list my popular foods based on cals and sugar per 100 gms.

Hi, 1 cup is equal to 250 ML; 1/2 cup is 125 ML etc. you can go online and it will tell you what the conversion is. Good luck.

Hi Judycakes thanks for that. Im looking for weight preferably given that I want to measure out fruit and the like. Ive searched the net without any luck. The US sites only give “cup” measurements and despite 2 hours inline in the UK I cant find weight size. Am I missing something somewhere.

A cup is a measure of volume (like a pint or litre) so the weight will vary depending on what you’re measuring.

Hi chezza1961, I also have a problem with measurements in “cups” – I once took things literally and made a cake with a mugful of flour, sugar, etc! Surprisingly it turned out quite well!

I found somewhere (don’t ask me where, it was a long, long time ago) the following information:
    1 cup = 16 tablespoons
    1/2 cup = 8 tbsp
    1/4 cup = 4 tbsp

    2 cups = 1 pint, 4 cups = 1 quart
    1/4 cup = 60ml; 1/2 cup = 125ml; 3/4 cup = 180ml; 1 cup = 250ml

    Hope that helps!

Just remember that the US cup is not quite 250ml – about 237ml. So converting from US to either UK/Aust will result in slightly more. Also tablespoon sizes differ from US to UK/Aus.
Best thing is to measure the ingredient cup wise, and keep a record for future reference. The internet does provide volume/weight equivalents especially for cooking.
This website may help – just remember it is US though. http://www.traditionaloven.com/conversions_of_measures/flour_volume_weight.html

    cheers

Sorry to take so long to get back, in Dunelm for £2.99 there are 5 cups, yolk separator and scraper printed with their sizes:

    Fluids: Dry Volune:
    1 Fl oz =2 tbsp =30 ml 1/2 tsp = 2.5 ml
    4 Fl oz =1/2 cup =120 ml 1 tsp = 5 ml
    8 Fl oz =1 cup =240 ml 1 tbsp = 15 ml
    12 Fl oz =1 1/2 cup =360 ml 1 cup = 240 ml
    16 Fl oz =2 cups = 480 ml 4 cup = 1 qt = 946 ml

Starting my week 8 tomorrow, don’t beat yourself up, it’s not a race and reduced input = reduced fat stores (usually).

Good luck everyone, I am beginning to loosen up on food items but still keeping sugar down to 30 mg or so each day.
