Hoping the few days away didn’t mean I put on all the weight I lost last week – overslept and rushed out without weighting myself this morning.
Back on the straight and narrow again today! – well, supper is a piece of brie and a small glass of wine!
Healthy lunch at the not so dodgy diabetic cookery class!

Sorted thru my wardrobes yesterday and got rid of loads more clothes today.

Hi Frog, even if the scale doesn’t cooperate in the morning, you can feel smugly ‘lighter’ by the weight of all those clothes no longer in the wardrobe! x

Isn’t it lovely to notice clothes that are too big or just fit better. I got my autumn coat out (turquoise – I love it) and it did up easily. I can’t remember the last time it did that. Then I got out my winter boots to walk the dog and they slid on much more easily than before – I must have lost weight around my calves! I haven’t had to throw anything out yet but then I think I was probably kidding myself that my clothes fit when they were on the tight side.

    Boots! – the holy grail.
I will get there, and have a fantastic pair of boots one day – if not this winter, then next!
I have lost some bulk from my calves – all of the smaller sized trousers that I’ve bought recently (some still too small, but in the sale, so “must have” “THEY WILL FIT” one day) have been plenty large enough on the calf, even if if “not quite” on the waist yet. I’ve also avoided buying any bootcut style trouser, having decided that for someone who is 5″4′, bootcut is distinctly unflattering.

That said, I did put on a kilo whole I was away, which is disappointing – but I’m still about 1.5 kilo lighter than when I started ‘the reboot’ so not too worried.

However i only seem to have access to a list of what i get on prescription
Cant find anywhere to click onto blood test results etc
Is there another step i need to take, or are some surgeries very restrictive in what they let you view,do you know? X

I feel the same as you that staying the same is fine because other really good things are happening in our bodies that we are not aware of.
Have just noticed that suddenly I am much more aware of the taste of food. It seems that the flavours have intensified. Maybe sugar and carbs affect the taste buds.
Hope you have a lovely holiday and that your hotel has lovely low carb food.

Week 12 results; 1lb loss. Grrr. This meant , as I have already posted, that I got to my 1 1/2 stone loss goal. I did actually see my other goal fulfilled yesterday with my weight starting with a 12, but then yesterday afternoon I completely lost the plot. I had a real craving for chocolate which just didn’t go. I gave into it with a double decker and then it was like the floodgates had opened and I ate a bowl of cereal, a peanut butter sandwich, a piece of cake and chips with my caesar salad! Needless to say I have put on a pound this morning so now my weight starts with a 13 again.

So my goals for the next week are
To see my weight start with a 12 (again)
3 lbs loss: I will no longer be obese just overweight according to my BMI

Frog, don’t worry about that kilo. It will soon disappear. You know what you have to do. Enjoy your break, Verano.

    Hi loopylou
Is that all you ate, that’s good in comparison to me, I have been doing that most days this week, I have also lost the plot. Weighed in this am up .3 kg on last week. So back in serious mode, my excuse is I have been so bonkers busy I have been getting over tired, and I think that has weakened my resolve. I don’t think I have looked at the posts here for days, that also doesn’t help. My workload is still very high, hit the ground running on return from hol, but it is more manageable now.
We is in week 12 mode hehe, anyway I don’t want week 13 to be an even more disappointing one so on it now, you to us June 29 girls got to stick together.
Hi to everyone else on the bus how you all doing, don’t have the time to read all the posts for days and days. Hihihi🙋🙋🙋🙋🙋🙋🙋hope you all have a Bril BSD week

By the way I had a dream that I met one of you in theatres in Brighton(not sure which one of you it was but in my dream I knew it was someone from this forum ) and we went for a coffee. Exciting dreams I have, eh?

On a more serious note, I took my 13 year old to docs this am as he has had tummy ache for 3 days and he said he had pain in his gall bladder and to put him in a low fat diet for a week and see what happens. I wouldn’t say we are a high fat family but now I am going to need to do some serious planning!

Well howde folks and I’d like to join this merry bunch by saying I’m just about to enter day 12 of the eight weeks and in 7 days had lost 7lbs and one inch on my waist.
I’m hoping for a few pounds more when Monday comes round again!
I’ve been diabetic for nearly 10 years and am 55 with moderate to severe neuropathy in my feet for some years and an increased risk of what was described as a’ 45% risk of a major event like Stoke or heart attack in the next five year’ by my Dr!Time to try something other than sit on my squidgy bum it was decided by my wife so here I am not having let a piece of bread , a custard cream or a host of other carbs pass my lips since a week last Sunday… Energy levels are low especially as I’m an opera singer for whom a performance offers my pancreas a spike you wouldn’t quite believe in adrenalin and therefore insulin production ( attempts at least).
It’s hard but the early results are promising so it’s just going to be a daily decision to carry on I guess.
Did anyone with type two notice a change in their vision ?
Happened a few days ago and would like to know if anyone else has experienced it.
Much respect to all of you attempting to do something about this addiction to sugar that we have and keep it up on those good 800 calories!

Interesting you have mentioned this Jon as I have been on this plan for 13 weeks and was pre diabetic, I have normal blood sugars now, but my eyesight has deteriorated a little more, I’m also due an eye test, so keep us posted. Mind you my change hasn’t happened suddenly, it’s been a steady deterioration. So we will see, but I don’t think mine is due to a lack of anything, as what I am eating is very balanced. Something to keep an eye on , oh dear what a pun

I am also interested to hear what your optician says Jon.

Prior to being diagnosed with diabetes my eyesight was absolutely fine with a blood sugar of 23.5. But when put on insulin it only spiked to max of 10 after meals and I was warned by the hospital that my eyesight would deteriorate significantly before coming back to normal – which would take 4 months and not to get new glasses for 4 months. This is exactly what happened.

Insulin didn’t protect me from retinopathy which developed later. BSD – even though my calories and carbs were too high (my error through not weighing) completely cured the retinopathy. (I started 1 May completely gone by mid June). On 3rd Sept I went on the fast 800 properly – weighing everything – and my blood sugars dropped dramatically. I am now off insulin completely. Instead of spikes of up to 10 – the highest spike is now around 6.2.

As before when blood sugars dropped my eyesight has deteriorated. Not as dramatic as before but was confirmed at eye clinic that sight in one eye has deteriorated. They didn’t seem overly worried as the eye looks really healthy now. So I am really interested in hearing what your optician says Jon.

Greenjanet – I also don’t think I am deficient either as this is probably the most balanced and nutritious way of eating that I have ever done in my whole life

First of all Verano, where are you. You should be back from your holiday by now. Jump back on the bus.

My weight is on the move again, in the right direction. I had an increase in b/g this morning, only 120 (6.6 mmol.L) but always makes me worry. Worry not I told myself and looked at everything I ate yesterday. Tomatoes twice, in my salad at lunch and then in my fritatta in the evening. I know they are technically a fruit and the carbs are a bit on the high side as are the sugars but my garden is full of them so I felt I had to get rid of some. I tried making some pasta sauces and put it in 3 sterile jar and the lids blew with tomatoes and mould all over my cupboards. I think I will just put them in the freezer so I am not overdosing on them in future.

Nice to be able to see where I am going wrong. If you have the new recipe book by MM’s wife you will see some recipes with masses of carbs (i.e. 34 to 60 in one meal) and if you look at the ingredients it is easy to spot the culprits, chickpeas, lentils, beetroot, tomatoes and in one recipe, dates. Just need a bit of a tweak.

Back to our apartment tomorrow and then home next Tuesday.

Good to see you’re on your way down again. Make some tomato sauce and freeze in portions great on courgetti especially with anchovies, capers and Parmesan !!!

Anyway, I’ve not been weighed since Tuesday when I was still just 2.6lbs up but think I will have gained more here, will find out Saturday morning.

    The future???

Will be starting a new thread next Tuesday ….’ Week13 …. Post holiday reboot!’

Think I’ll need a good reboot to get back on track!

My “reboot” still not going brilliantly – but my GP just called (the lump I had removed from my back last month wasn’t what they thought it was, nothing dangerous, but they need to do it again) – and she was really impressed with blood results from a few weeks ago.

She considers that i’m no longer diabetic, but would prefer to leave me on the register (I had the option on that) so that I will continue to have annual blood checks, which sounds sensible to me as I don’t check my blood at home for glucose levels.

    Hi yowzer
Yes it is amazing. When I read the book I thought it might help me control the mealtime spikes and lower my hb1ac. Jenny Ruhl – in her book Blood Sugar 101 quotes from various studies (and she backs this up with links to the studies) that Macular oedema and retinopathy is likely at average fasting of 7.2 and hb1ac of 46 (approx). No retinopathy at fasting 6.0 and hb1ac approx 38.
Although nowhere in the BSD does it say you can reverse retinopathy I was very hopeful that you could.
Before I started the BSD I told a Dr at the eye clinic what I was going to do and he said that nothing I could do would make any difference and that it would just continue to get worse. Clearly not true because when I had my next appointment all the oedema had gone. At the appointment last week I saw the consultant and he said no retinopathy in my eye at all.
I have been off insulin for just over 2 weeks now so things are just getting better and better.
Sunshine – well done on losing the 2 kg – it is so good to see the weight going down.

It is a bit scary that the doctors tell us that the side effects of diabetes cannot be reversed and will just get worse. It makes you think that we really are at the forefront of a massive change in how diabetes is managed. No that is wrong – we are not managing our diabetes we are reversing/defeating it and getting back our health.

Hi Verano it went well for the first week (well, six days I think!) – then a slippery slope – next Tuesday sounds good.

It wasn’t new blood results, the ones from about a month ago, but I’d only discussed them with the nurse, rather than the GP at the time. I was pleasantly surprised when she acknowledged reversing the diabetes, after other posters had written more negatively about their own GPs reactions. GP’s reaction to coming of Metformin (my unilateral decision) was “very sensible” – whereas the nurse was definitely a but miffed about it
I know some people posting here had been keen to be removed from the “diabetic register”, but I don’t really have a problem I’d prefer to to monitor on a regularish basis. I did wonder if GP’s get a higher level of remuneration for diabetic patients – maybe I’m just too cynical!

I’ve been a bit busy & not logged in as much recently – hope that you are doing well and enjoying your holiday.

Hi loopylou and strange visit to opticians who said my eyes had changed dramatically by 1.5 points.
Means suddenly short sight is much better but long sight not so good… A friend who us a national diabetic specialist said however, that this was a normal spike given the shifting sands of glucose and depends on the glucose concentration inside and outside of the lens in the eye.
According to him nothing to worry about and in two to three weeks should be back to normal.
Bad day today as 7.5 hours traveling t o Leeds followed by three hour show; tough on salad , and protein only!
Probably up to about 1000 for the day but this is the first day this has happened so premier inn tonight and hopefully back on the horse tomorrow !!!
Determined as lost so much weight in 13 days and nearly two inches round my waist… I’m not enormous but far too big and my count was 9.3 fasting today down from 13.3 going in the right direction …
How are you and you other guys striving for this goal?

    Hi Frog

You aren’t being cynical ! GPs do get an extra ‘fee’ for each diabetic patient they have in the practice. But in saying that I do think you are best to be monitored and good to hear that your GP was positive about you’re ‘self-help’!

There are advantages to being removed from the diabetic register, such as lower holiday insurance premiums, but I think monitoring is important just in case we fall of the wagon which is all too easy!!

I am literally doing 7 days reboot. No long term plan, just a short sharp shock to get back into the swing of things. So no huge pressure and it would be great to have you along.

Ok! So this is weird !

Got weighed this morning and have lost 2.4lbs of the 2.6lbs I’ve put on since I’ve been away!!!

Haven’t kept my Fatsecret log since last Monday.

Have ‘walked’ more than normal for me, probably doing 1500 + steps a day. Just a point, my consultant said that for me to walk a mile , I wish! , would be the equivalent of an able bodied person walking 5 miles .

Have eaten eggs each morning instead of yogurt and walnuts.

Have probably eaten fewer carbs because I’ve not been counting I’ve tried harder to stay away from them.

No snacking between lunch and dinner, sometimes a couple of stem ginger oat biscuits!

Makes you wonder …. maybe being a little more relaxed but sticking to the principles is the way for me!

    Interesting, Verano! Well done!

Funnily enough I think overdoing the calories IS less important than keeping the carbs low. You are probably having still many less calories than your body needs to maintain weight. Lowering the carbs forces your hormones to start burning the fat cells.

But, whatever, well done and onwards and downwards! 🙂

Great that you are losing inches around your waist.

Verano – hope your reboot goes well over the weekend.

Frog – your GP sounds really good. She must have been so pleased with what you have achieved. Just think how much the NHS would save if all diabetic patients would do the same. Hi Igorasusual

I think you could be right! At the end of the day it’s the carbs that have the most effect on BG. My fasting level this morning was 6.3 which is the lowest it’s been since I started testing a few weeks ago. On average it’s been closer to 7 and that has been really disappointing for me.

So now I’m feeling far more positive. I’m really looking forward to doing just a one week reboot from next Tuesday, the day I travel home. I’m hoping that I will really be able to learn something from the last few weeks and the reboot.

As Yowzer says a bit of a mix up now and again probably really helps the body to get back into fat losing mode!
