Ok, I’m jumping on this as a new girl. Finished day1 yesterday, generally ok until hunger pangs in the evening…jumped on the spin bike and they subsided…starving this am.
I am following the 4week plan in the back of the book as I want to take decisions away, I don’t want to fail, I have committed to this and my first commitment is 4weeks…so I thought this was a good forum.
I am overweight, BMI about 30 but sugars are ok. No family history of diabetes except type 1, but everyone is overweight and tummy’s are big. I have done slimming world and calorie counting but 1lb a week is just not enough, 55days to go…

September means my birthday and wedding anniversary and I really want to lose some kilos before then. My plan is to stick to 1000 calories, keep going with the exercise classes I started this week and also walk at least 10,000 steps each day. Oh and water, not drinking enough is always my downfall I think!
    Good luck all!

I want to get back on track. Went away this weekend and lo and behold the carb monster escaped from the cage and ran riot!
Calmed myself down on Monday and hopefully I will be doing ok again. I weighed this morning and I am amazed that I stayed the same, but I did run yesterday and go on a long walk in the afternoon and I have run again today ( not far only 5 k and very slow!)
I have planned what I am going to eat and I would like to get down into the next stone by the time September rolls around. I go away on holiday on the 11th Sept, so I really need to keep planning. I was disappointed in myself to be honest, but this blip has made me more determined to be more efficient with my meal planning. Winging it, having wine ( to please others) and just saying blow it are all pointers to my failure. I have girded up my loins and I am ready to fight the battle again!

Day 3 on 800 fast….feel empty rather than overly hungry. Novelty is starting to wear off though but sneaky step on scales says 3lbs off. Just finished my no carb Bircher…not as filling as the egg and avocado on plan yesterday and tasted REALLY sweet with the apple juice. Only 53 days to go…

  • posted by SueBlue

Scottish lass I find the no carb bircher too sweet also. I don’t have it very often but when I do I use 1/2 apple juice and 1/2 water. To be honest I’d rather spend the 180 calories on something more filling. I like apple & cinammon steel cut oats (I make them in my slow cooker) they are about 150 calories per serve. I know that porridge isn’t suitable for everyone though as it spikes blood sugars for some. I don’t have diabetes though.
I found days 3 & 4 the hardest when I did 8 weeks BSD (800 calories), it got easier after that.
Other filling breakfasts from the book are cheesy baked beans, another I like is the baked mushrooms with feta and spinach.
Another tip – drink lots of water. I found sparkling water helped when I had hunger pangs as did a cup of white coffee.
Good luck with the rest of your first week 🙂

Zinny I hear you re winging it and drinking wine – both things I do too! Definitely planning is the key to success I think.
I have planned a weeks menu (some meals from the book and some of my own) and am determined not to stray from it. I picked up a pizza on the way home from work yesterday at my (adult) daughter’s request. I didn’t have any of it though and stuck to my planned meal of bolognaise sauce & zoodles. One day at a time….

Thanks for the advice SueBlue, good tip re water/juice mix but I agree in general would choose an alternative although I have promised myself I won’t stray from the meal plan this week except the sardine dip today (peanut butter dip instead).
Noticed yesterday at work my “treat” of a Diet Coke just led to drop of energy 2h later so will try to avoid this more. Only drink them occasioanlly anyway.
Porridge is good for me (we eat a lot as a family) so I will look up the recipe, I am not diabetic either so not too worried re blood sugars, more temoving energy dips/highs whilst losing weight.
    On day 4…

Hi everyone I’m day late in joining but that’s life. How is everyone feeling at the start of the next four weeks?

I’m just starting another round of eight weeks having lost 31lbs in my first round. My aims for these weeks are a little different, yes I want the weight loss but I also really want to up my fibre input without upping my carbs. I need to get better at managing the constipation that seems to accompany this approach.

I’d also like to feel like I am cooking again, not just simple meals of protein & greens. I haven’t sussed this out yet but hopefully over the next 4 weeks I’ll make some progress.

How are people coping with planning their meals? It’s something I really dislike. Please do share how you cope. Do you plan a week or a day at a time?

    Well good luck everyone, KOKO.

Welcome toddy and congratulations on your loss so far, 31lbs is fantastic!
In regards to meal planning, I tend to do a rough plan for dinners for a week at a time. I then may swap days around to suit. I still have 2 of my young adult kids living at home, so cook for them as well
as my husband. Our main meals are a mix of recipes from the 2 BSD books, our usual family meals (with BSD tweaks) and others. I bought a good book on Amazon called ‘Slimspirational Grub’, irs got some great BSD-friendly recipes in there such as toad in the hole, curries, soups (my favourite is butternut squash & chorizo), Swedish meatballs & mash…loads of lovely meal ideas, my family don’t realise they are eating ‘diet’food as such!
Last night we had Swedish meatballs – I had cauli mash and they had mashed potato. When we have bolognaise I have zoodles and they have pasta, tacos – I make mine a taco bowl instead of having shells.
With breakfast I’ll often cook a batch of steel cut oats in my slow cooker on Sundays and that’s my breakfast sorted for most of the week – it just takes a minute to reheat each morning.
Also on the weekend I sometimesdo things like make a batch of egg muffins – they make a good breakfast or lunch. I’ll also make soups when I can and then put into containers for lunches and freeze some.
There’s a lovely recipe in the BSD recipe book for Spicy purple veg – red cabbage, beetroot and red onion. It’s lovely hot or cold and makes a good lunch or dinner side.
At the very least I like to have the next days meals planned and partly prepared (ie lunch ready to take to work) before I go to bed.
My lunches are usually dinner leftovers, soups, salads or a ploughman’s style meal.
Another tip – if I have the oven on to cook dinner I’ll often then roast some veg for lunches or to use in soups.
As I’m typing this post I’ve realised that the main problem I have each week is deciding what I’m going to cook as there are so many delicious options!
I very rarely have a problem with constipation but I’ve heard a magnesium supplement can help, or include chia seeds in your meals.
Good luck with this round 🙂

    Hello Zoomers

I’d like to take part in the four week challenge with you all. Some of you may know me. I am currently 5lb above my goal weight and would like to get back to my target weight of 133lb. I got to goal last year in October and I am seeing a slow but gradual increase in my weight. I need to get back to basics and get this under control and hopefully will be able to achieve this during this challenge. As can often happen after weight loss we get a little complacent and certain foods start to creep back in. I can honestly say that no bread, rice, pasta or potatoes have passed my lips but I’ve started craving crackers and have been eating crisps! No wonder the weight is creeping back on. My challenge from today is not to eat a packet of crisps for the next four weeks! I have to remember to stick rigidly to a low carb way of eating, Here goes…..

Hi Cathy, good luck with the challenge.
I can’t believe it was October last year when you reached your goal, time has flown!
As you can see I’m still plodding along. I’ve spent much of this year, or to be honest, all of this year essentially in maintenance. Which would be ok if I had reached my goal weight first, but I didn’t. I now weigh about 3kg more than I did at the beginning of this year.
I’ve been pretty much on plan food wise but eating bigger portions than I should be and not doing enough exercise, not to mention indulging in wine.
I’m really hoping that this challenge will be the on where I’ll get back on track 🙂

    Hi Guys
SueBlue – I wasted this year so far “maintaining” so I know where you’re coming from! So far this week, the bread monster is back in his box! Imagining a piece of toast or bread and butter spread with plug hole hair and gunk, seems to be doing the trick! Eeww! An old Paul McKenna suggestion from way back!
CCathy, good to see you here too! I’ve just ordered some Inulin which I read on another thread is a good source of fibre and a prebiotic so lots of gut benefits and helpful with “transit” issues. Also supposed to aid with sleep problems – worth a try!
Toddy – fabulous loss first round. I tend to sit down on a Sunday morning and draft out easy dinners and packed lunches for the week ahead. I basically aim to keep it cost effective too. So I may blanch a large pot of “greens” for the week ahead and can have those either cold and dressed with a bit of lemon juice, olive oil or heat them up and serve with salmon or chicken. Another useful idea I read and I intend to try is to make a really thin omelette and once cool, use it as a wrap and fill with whatever you fancy, prawn salad, ham salad, tuna mixed with peppers, that sort of thing.
You could make 4 and keep in the fridge.
Zinny, Scottishlass, Eatingforlife = good to see you all here also. 🙂
Wishing us all a wonderful weekend. I’m off to Machynlleth, Wales and the next 3 days are going to rain all day! I don’t care, just looking forward to getting away, change of scene!

    Hello all,
having completely fallen off the wagon for the last month and a half, well and truely losing my BSD mojo, I would like to join this challenge and start again. My weight has crept back up to 12st 9lbs, and I would really like to get down to the high 11st region to start with. Not really sure what is my downfall, as I am still not eating pasta, bread, pizza, rice etc, so I will have to cross examine my food to see where the carbs are slipping in (although I am having a couple of new potatoes every few days or so as we harvest them from the garden). I know the BSD plans works, just need to get back on that darn wagon and have another go.

New potatoes bring back happy memories for me. We lived in a farming area when I was a child and my mum used to send my brothers and I out to the fields on summer evenings to pick up baby new potatoes that had been left behind by the potato pickers that day (probably because they were too small). I can still remember that fresh earthy smell and how delicious they were hot with some butter or cold with salad cream 🙂

Start of day 5 for me, complete newbie. Doing well so far, managed a trip round Edinburgh festival with hubby and kids (aged 8/6/3) yesterday and took my halumi kebabs with me. Today is 2 bigger meals as per plan in the book so I will see how that goes, brunch looks lovely but will need to eat by 9.30 and then nil til 6pm as out for family walk day….they will have a picnic.
Just heading out for my first fasted run. Only 4miles which is short for me (did my 5th marathon this year). This week I have kept any training to 30-40mins so will see how a run pre breakfast feels, normally I would have a banana. Would love to hear other people’s experience of exercise on this plan.
Toddy I have found the foil steamed fish, beetroot falafels and lamb in aubergine in the back of the fast 800 book very tasty this week and proper recipes that feel like cooking. I am planning on Sunday the whole week using the meal plan in the book and so far so good.
    Have a great weekend everyone!

    Hi SueBlue,
I grew up on a farm and still live in a rural area – food miles and growing our own food has always been important to me, as well as therapeutic to get out in the garden after a hard day at work. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately for my BSD WOL) with such a long hot dry summer, only the new potatoes have thrived, half of my carrot crop eventually germinated and the parsnip bed failed miserably. Runner beans and climbing french beans haven’t done very well either, and my salad crops were decimated by caterpillars of the dreaded cabbage white butterfly. Hoping we get some decent rain showers now so that I can get some winter greens going.

I have done a few Park runs and am trying to do one a week plus two other runs and a weekly swim. Need to lose another 3 stone so halfway there. Catherine 4 years ago I lost all my hair during chemotherapy. I took a Blackmores supplement called ‘Hair Skin & Nails’, I think it has biotin in it. My hair grew back really healthy and strong, not sure if it was the vitamins or the healthy diet I was eating, or a combination of both but it may be worth a try. Otherwise are you taking a multivitamin each day, or every second day?
A 3 stone loss is fantastic by the way. How exciting to know you are halfway to goal already 🙂
How is everyone going after their first week on this round?
I started doing HIIT and Pilates classes last week and am enjoying them so far. Have been mainly sticking to plan food wise, with an average of about 1000-1100 calories a day, so I’m going to focus on lowering that a bit this week.
It’s Tuesday morning where I am (Sydney) and so I weighed myself. I have a 900g (just about 2lb) loss this week, which is good for me as I tend to lose weight slowly. I just need to keep this up for the next 6 weeks and I may just reach my birthday goal. My birthday goal is to get to the overweight range for my BMI, this will also see me go into another kilo bracket (80s rather than 90s), this will then be my lowest weight in probably 10 years or so. I just have to keep going!

6lbs weight loss in a week! By BMI is around 30 and I have never lost this much before. I have been strict, only going off plan by 50g mozerella all week, otherwise I stuck with the 800. I’m soooo happy.
Exercise seems ok so far, thanks Catherine70, will keep an eye how it goes.
Yersterday forgot about a meeting after work so hadn’t taken my chicken salad, meant from 7.30am-9.30pm all I had was a beetroot humous at 200 calories but felt surprisingly ok. My work days are extremely intense so happy my concentration stayed.

This week goal is 3lbs. Will be hard as 8year olds party with cakes to bake and 12 kids to entertain, also family BBQ this weekend but my sister is doing this too so that should help.

What a great first week, Scottishlass!

I’m not signed up for this challenge, as I’ve been in maintenance for 16 months, but I wanted to share my
experience with hair loss with Catharine. About 19 years ago I put myself on a semi starvation diet,
600-650cal/day. After 5 months, I was experiencing hair loss, and it was alarming!! When I started the
BSD in June of 2016, I did some research on protein requirements because I didn’t want to repeat the
hair loss experience 🙂 It took me 10 months to lose 140lbs, and I didn’t take any breaks along the way.
I kept to @ 50g of protein a day, and even in maintenance I rarely go above 52g. I haven’t had any hair
loss at all, and in fact my hair is less dry than it used to be (I think it’s the healthy fats). Best of luck
to you…it must feel marvelous to be half way there. Congratulations!

We had a pharmaceutical rep in work today and she bought in a delicious buffet lunch and I had three strawberries. I was very impressed with my resolve, I can’t believe how difficult I am finding it to lose my gained five pounds this time round. Catherine, I have come across this formula in independent research on protein levels too. 50g worked for
me, but another way of considering it is 1g of protein for every kg of IDEAL body weight. Work out the math,
and tell me what you think! When I used the formula, the max for me was 62g, but I stayed under it, with
    no problem. Very best wishes,

Welcome aboard. A few old timers on this thread (me being one). It really does make a massive difference having the support of fellow BSDers on the journey. Here’s to a good week ahead.

I have had a really bad day today. An elderly man careered his massive car sideways into my car which was parked in the health centre car park where I work when his foot got jammed on his accelerator and he has written off my beautiful Mini Cooper! Nobody, thankfully was injured during the unfortunate incident but I am now awaiting delivery of courtesy car and probably will receive a measly sum of money in an insurance pay out. So unfair!

What a thoughtful thing to do!!!
Greenjanet, it’s great to have you back. We all slog on together 🙂 You are right, these challenges are always

Hi SueBlue! Well done! I too am a September baby . . . in week 6 of the BSL programme 🙂 – and after a 43 day ICU stay in drug-induced coma 6 years ago, had issues with my hair – more grew on my face and half fell out of my head!!!! Head hair kinda recovered but after a benign tumour and my remaining ovary were removed 18 months ago . . . while Im SO GRATEFUL to have hair, it has lost lustre, curl and life. So I may try the supplement of which you write 🙂 Thank you. In reference to the kilo bracket . . . Im in my 70’s, and my initial 11kg in 4-5 weeks discard was such a surprise. Out of the low 90’s and almost out of the low 80’s! But for me? feeling better was my man concern. Do care what I weight but have always weighed heavier than my counterparts while not looking larger or heavier than them 🙂 Things are moving along much slower this week, and I believe the mental game will/must kick in right about now 🙂 The real challenge of my resolve!!! As a Virgo we tend to ANALYSE everything for understanding . . . and Im thinking my initial stubbornness to avoid meds and prove to medicos their assessment needed further investigation was sufficient – no GREAT – motivation . . . now I need to love myself a little more for the next stage 🙂 Im loathe to set a goal as that creates expectation . . . and if it isnt achieved . . , then the (seen as) “negative” disappointment/disappointing result is interpreted as failure or some other conclusion which is never good. Just treading water . . . and doing my best this week . . . plodding even . . . and doing my best not to focus on BSL’s, food or feelings 🙂

Hi again Sue! SO PLEASED to read your post about OATS blowing up (some people’s) BSL’s!!! NONE of those Ive been sent to (Diabetic Nurse, Diabetic Advisor and two GP’s) – seemed to believe me . . . and kept pushing that I needed pills!!! When they didnt work – (and why would they when I was still having oats, and (approved) crispbreads for lunch with cheese tomato etc., and home-made soups with dry grains – made the old-fashioned way!!! . . .?) – they said “no has to be insulin injections for you !!!” So NOW . . . my readings are (an occasional 5 on waking) or 6-7’s – no doubt too high for some medicos . . . but they can stick their meds thank you. This is good! Weight reducing – and I feel amazing!!! At 70+ I think that’s pretty good going! – (as my dear dad would have said :)) Onward and upward!
