Starting week 2 it would seem I am down by almost 3pounds….it would def have been more but I have been mixing some other low carb recipes along MM ones and may well have overdone the calories. Finding 800 cals hard if am honest!
I need a procedure ( have done for 12 months ) but local NHS hosp turned me down saying my BMI needs to be under 30! Just worked out that’s a 3 stone loss required!! felt so humiliated but it should spur me on , however, I find I wanted to eat everything not allowed…
I will give this week a real good go. Drinking water is so doable right now as its hot, hot, hot and that always traicks my tum into feeling full.
So, to all of us keeping on keeping on, lets do this….all the best!!

When you look at the carb number for a vegetable, there will also be a fiber number. Subtract the fiber from the carb for the “effective” carb number — i.e. garbanzo beans 1/2 cup is 20 grams carbohydrate and has 6 grams fiber. Subtract 6 from 20 and you get 14 grams carbohydrate for the 1/2 cup serving (this is the number you use).
This REALLY matters because you can eat foods with high levels of fiber in much larger quantities! So make sure you check.
I’m not knowledgeable about how My Fitness Pal logs veggies. Maybe someone else can let us know.
There is a GREAT discussion of this in Gary Taubes book “Why We Get Fat and What To Do About It”. I recommend it very strongly — its the perfect companion book to the BSD. Both Allie and I used that book — she lost 150 pounds and I lost 50 so it really helps!! -
I had frozen avocado today
It wasn’t quite as nice as fresh avocado, but convenient – just shoved it in a box with a boiled egg and some prawns, and it had all thawed out by the time i went to eat it. Given the number I’ve bought recently that have either been bruised mush or as hard as bullets. it’s not a bad option. -
Thank you , that’s very helpful. I already skip breakfast, just coffee as never been a breakfast eater. I didn’t know, & don’t really understand about deducting fibre carbs, I just count carbs from veg according to My Fitness Pal.
Thank you California girl for your meal lists, I can see that I’m going a bit wrong with my salads as I have tomatoes, onions, red pepper, sometimes beetroot which all have carbs so mount up I suppose. -

I have just watched a YouTube video of Prof Taylor, the instigator of this diet before Dr Mosley. He says when you get to your ideal weight and blood sugar levels you should be able to eat what ever you want – WITHIN REASON. You should start to increase calories slowly and the same with carbs. However, if you have lost weight you shouldn’t go back to how you used to eat as your body is now smaller and doesn’t need the same amount. It is a matter of trial and error. Sticking with a Med diet, lots of veg, some fruits, good oils and a few carbs might be the way forward but you have to try and see. Are you able to test BG to see if certain foods have an impact and, more important is to keep the weight down.

Hi Arianwen,
I did it in stages, I started out cutting out all the major sources of carbs, to get down to around the 40 to 50 g of carbs a day and gradually got my carb monster under control. Then my taste buds and my appetite both changed, so I both was quite comfortable making lower carb choices and started to skip breakfast, and gradually lunch slipped back in time, until I got to eating in a 4 hour window each day. -

on 8 Jul 2018 at 22:19 in Starting the BSDAdd some chia seeds or some fibre dense foods to slow this down, you can take an Imodium in the meantime but it will settle down. I had it pointed out that I said not to have pink salt, I really meant if it is not the genuine thing, Himalayan pink salt is the real thing but some companies fake it.

Hi Arianwen! It can take a bit of practice to get your carb intake very low. You have to wrap your head around a different way of eating! You say you are 40-50 grams of carbs per day, that’s good! — so you are likely in ketosis and it should be pretty easy to go even lower.
Here’s my 20 gram day (I’m two years of maintenance but I still do low carb every single day and very low carb as a corrective measure).
Breakfast:
Either skip completely to get more fasting hours or if I’m hungry, 1-2 Tablespoons heavy (whipping) cream in my coffee, 1 oz slice of cheese. (This gives hours of energy)
Lunch:
Kale salad with tuna salad on top with avocado, or fresh fish and some green beans, or a hamburger patty with a side of greens and olive dressing — kale, collards, chard and all greens great for filling up. Can dress with olive oil and lemon juice or homemade mayo.
Dinner:
Fish and veggies, or stir fry with veggies and beef, chicken, pork, roasted pork loin with veggies, homemade mousakka, etc etc..
I stick with greens and green vegetables (remember you get to SUBTRACT the fiber from the carbs).
Try this for a week or two — then evaluate your own body’s response. Every one is different and what works for one might not work for you. You are looking for your personal “sweet spot” — your own carbohydrate “threshold” — you are going to find it, and it’s going to be much easier when you figure it out! -
Hi Arianwen – this is a list of low carb foods https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/44-healthy-low-carb-foods#section27
Search keto recipes. That should help.

I have followed the BSD diet since last September lost a lot of weight and got my blood sugar in the normal range which I am thrilled with, but lately I have started struggling and find I am eating more of the things I used to eat but gave up, I am keeping my weight steady at 9stone (previously 11st 4lbs) I weigh myself everyday, but what I am not sure of is having lost weight and keeping it off will me now having more treats eg: a piece of bread, a chocolate bar, a sugar free biscuit etc affect my type 2 diabetes as long as I manage to keep the weight off ? I find that most days now I have something that previously when I was trying to lose weight I didn’t.
I have read that certain foods are worse for some people than others, so for example bread might be really bad for my Blood Sugar, whereas a chocolate bar might not be so bad, and I am wondering if buying a meter would be useful. I could be deluding myself and just because the weight is off and staying off thinking I can now eat more of the things I previously cut out completely ?
Any thoughts on this would be much appreciated. -

Thanks so much for your replies it has really put my mind at ease. I did eat a lot of carbs and sweets before I started this WOE so my body is probably needing to get used to it !
My blood sugars have been pretty good they have came down.
The thing I’m experiencing now and sorry for TMI but the back end is very very loose I wonder if it’s the change of diet. Have you heard of anyone else experiencing this. I had my gallbladder removed soon to be 5 weeks ago and it’s only since yesterday this has startedJulie

What do you eat to keep under 20 carbs a day? I’m finding it quite difficult to keep to that & usually end up with around 40-50 even though I think I’m sticking to the diet. My weight is stuck& I’ve read posts saying the secret is to drop below 20 but what do you actually eat in a day to get that figure?
Is there a thread anywhere that gives people’s daily meals, which would be really helpful? -

I so agree with Caronl, curlfitgirl 🙂 Take this one day at a time, or one meal at a time, if necessary. Pre-planning
is key, and you will have that mastered in no time, and it will soon be as familiar to you as any other daily task.
Best wishes for your success!Allie

Fleur de sel is gorgeous, S-G! So much flavor! I’m glad that you are enjoying your courses. Food as Medicine
sounds great. Over time, I’ve come to think of all food in terms of it’s nutrient density, too, rather than whether
or not I “fancy it”, as you might say 🙂 I’m glad to get a new thread started tomorrow. Very happy that you will
be participating. I still have a little work to do to reverse “sundried tomato-gate”! -

on 8 Jul 2018 at 16:39 in Fast 800Hi allie, if it is the genuine thing then it is okay, just that some is just salt dyed pink. Always check the label as there are some people trying to make money off the back of something that is good. You say about the trace elements, funnily enough processed salts has all the trace elements washed out, what a waste. I use a French salt called Fleur de sel Geurande, it is a weird shade of grey but you only need a tiny bit to get a big taste hit.
Oh and yes to another challenge. I am enjoying my 2 courses very much, especially the Food as Medicine course. It talks a lot of sense.

I need to lose 20 pounds as well, let’s think, when did I last weigh 150 pounds?24 years ago I weighed 147 pounds after my 3rd son was born, went to WW and said I’d like to lose half a stone, the leader said I was being unrealistic!Don’t know what happened after that but 150 pounds here I come, can’t wait to see you again!
-
Oh SG, I read earlier today on some thread (?) that you were advising against pink himalayan sea salt? I’ve
been using it for the trace elements, so I’m curious to know why it isn’t a good choice. It certainly is pricey! -
Yes!

sunshine-girl, how wonderful to have a swim before you turn into bed! It must be so relaxing 🙂 I’ve never

snakes too, but that is beyond the pale for me !

on 8 Jul 2018 at 13:59 in Starting the BSDHi Julielyons19 – welcome to the site and the diet plan. You are in the right place to help with your diabetes or even putting it in remission depending on a lot of factors, like how long you have been diabetic, how well you stick with the plan and so on.
Your questions: are you able to check your blood glucose regularly. If so, do. I found my BG dropped very quickly from 190 or 10.5 on the other scale, to around 120 or 6.6. As it has only been 4 days I doubt it is your blood sugar dropping to seriously low levels but it is good to keep an eye on it. What you might be experiencing is simple lack of food or, some people experience carb withdrawal with can be similar. It should pass but I would say again, keep an eye on your BG. Over the next few weeks you might need to reduce your medication but I would say only if you do it very slowly and maybe have your doctor on board with this.
The salt – yes drinking lots of water makes you pee more thereby flush out the bodies salt supplies. Also, as the fat cell get smaller the fat is replaced by water and this then flushes the fat from your system. That is how the fat leaves the body, through the urine. If you are having a varied diet you shouldn’t need to replace salts as the body can make its own adjustments. However, because we are drinking so much more and peeing lots it can be helpful to have a small amount of salt on food. I am talking about a small pinch, not half a teaspoon. Think like wetting your finger and dipping the tip in some salt – no more than that. Another thing about salt, try to buy the best you can, the ordinary table salts are full of additional chemicals, mainly to stop it from clumping together plus it has been bleached to make it white. These are the things that are bad for us, not the salt itself. I buy real salt which has not been treated, you can tell from the colour, it should be grey to yellow, dont buy the pink stuff. Hope that helps, a bit too much information but there you go.

Beginning of the week again. So, September 1 means this is the beginning of 8 weeks and I have 10 weeks to blood work and 11 weeks to weigh in with doc who wants me at 150, 20 pounds less.
I WILL BE DOING THIS NOW!!

Morning Sunshine!
Any realtor on each coast can help you find just the right rental at just the right price. That is how we moved down here from New York. The shores on both sides are gorgeous! -
Zinny, What detailed memory 😀. Mine, goes as far as me being 16 and at the beginning of the school year we had the same thing. I believe that was the last time….or was I 17? I don’t remember what colour my knickers were or what I wore that day but remember telling myself surounded by the skinnies that I should probably do something about it. There you go, 23 years later, 1 wedding,1 child and number of diets later I’m here….
🤓👍.
Let’s see who’s going to have the last laugh. Me or the flab that’s enveloping me 😉
Have a wonderful Sunday.

on 8 Jul 2018 at 13:34 in Fast 800Oh Violinist, how lovely to be in Florida. Although we are very lucky living in France with summer usually rearing up around late April early May and Autumn not arriving until late September early October. Unfortunately, this year had a very slow start with the temperatures getting anywhere near hot in the last 4 weeks. English are getting pretty much the same there which is quite unusual. At least my family will be used to the heat by the time they come here on holiday in 3 weeks time. We were hoping to visit Florida next year as daughter wants to rent a very large house and go as one big family – any ideas.

on 8 Jul 2018 at 12:41 in Fast 8004lb down this morning – at last! I think my body is panicking at the lack of food and desperately trying to keep hold of everything! But it won’t win!! 😂
We’ve been fruit picking this morning and I have been indulging in some raspberries and strawberries – but I think they are some of the better fruits for this WOE is that right? My favourite fruit is grapes – I can literally eat them by the punnet full – so I am having to work hard not to eat them!
Well done ellem 13lb in a month is great!
KOKO everyone! -
Good late morning at 7 am here! Ellem, I am encouraged by your own numbers. I just can’t go back to the docs in 11 weeks without losing the weight I said I would, so here we go! I will be bisiting family in New York this next week, but I always do my own grocery shopping and make my breakfast and lunch. My sister, who I will be staying with, doesn’t cook much or eat at home.
Sunshine, being in Florida, I swim lengths every day for 30-60 minutes from April thru October. I have an exercise room with my elliptical, recumbent bike, and rower, and when it is cool in the morning or November thru March, I walk and bike outside.
Zinny, in America all over they have turned railway lines into walking paths. One is called the rail trail. There are hundreds in Florida!
Ok folks, going for my first coffee. Talk later. By the way, stepped on the scale and am down 2 pounds. Thanks for encouraging me.
Sunshine, in the catholic church here, they still believe that some people who are filled with the holy spirit, speak in tongues. Interesting.
