I’m just about to start the 800 cal Blood Sugar diet and I’m wondering if it’s ok to eat things like tinned baked beans or tinned plum tomatoes, or even tinned soup, etc.

Heinz baked beans does not list sugar on the tin as an ingredient. Tomato soup and tinned tomatoes lists carbohydrate of which sugars, so does that mean it’s a carb that’s ok to have?

    Does anyone know?

There is a recipe for Cheesy Beans in the book so I think you’re ok to eat them (the ingredients list 1/2 tin of baked beans) 🙂 This has made my life a bit easier when I’m in a hurry.

Thanks for your reply. After writing my post here I went through the book again and did notice that recipe on second reading.

A handy site http://www.calorie-charts.net/legumes/1748 says canned baked beans are 1/5 carbs and about 100 cals/100 grams. 1 cup 265 cals unsalted beans. About 20 g of sugar (in the yummy sauce, of course) per cup according to http://nutritiondata.self.com/facts/legumes-and-legume-products/7698/2
Hubby loves baked beans for breakie, so may have to start making our own.
    BTW, interesting article at http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-126977/Secret-sugar-shock.html

Heinz (in the UK) do a reduced sugar and salt version – 50% less sugar and 25% less salt. We have them all the time and no visiting child has ever noticed. I prefer them side by side to regular beans (I prefer home made ones even more). 1/2 tin is 139 kcal, 20.5g Carbo, including 4.7g sugar. To compare with above that is 67kcals per 100g and 9.9% carbohydrate. They do contain Steviol.

    Hi Fifo,
Could you post your recipe for home made baked beans? If it ticks our BSD boxes of course!

I haven’t made these since I’ve been on the BSD. A quick look and it seems okay, slightly too much apple juice maybe. The recipe is based on a 500g bag of dried beans and makes too much for a normal pan. I am also missing one or two details (how long to bake!). I’ll see what I can do.
