Thanks Verano and Allie,I’ll just stick with fat secret and not confuse myself with looking at different databases.I also need to get better with preplanning what I eat so it’s all sorted.Denise, unfortunately I’m sleep deprived,we have a disabled son who rarely sleeps through the night so know this will be playing havoc with my body as well.

JGwen, I just listened to the Bikman podcast, interesting! Insulin’s role in both loss and gain is fascinating. It’s made me rethink the amount of fat in my diet, both this podcast and a YouTube video that I also had on today. It was recommended on another thread, can’t remember by whom I’m afraid. It’s called Fathead and I found it quite absorbing as well. That one went into saturated fat and it’s effect on cholesterol levels amongst many other things. Since my level went up last time I have been strictly limiting animal fats but that may not be the best way forward.
According to my ketostix I am not in ketosis and have rarely been for months. I don’t understand why and I have the thirst I associate with ketosis- but maybe I need to get a new batch of sticks, these are pretty old.
Thanks for the recommendation, the other one is on my list as well.

Morning, Mariet! I’m not familiar with Bikman, so I just googled “you tube bikman podcast”. There are many podcasts
to chose from, so I’ve bookmarked the page for reading later on today! Thank you so much for bringing him to my
attention 🙂 It’s 3:00am where I am, so best try to get some sleep!

Have a great day, everyone! Will be checking in with you all when the sun is up…

    Hi Mariet,
Thank you for mentioning the podcast. Someone else replied to my highlighting Bikman’s work on Insulin by talking about how helpful they found his coverage on what was happening when Whoosh’s happen a couple of days ago and I was meaning to search for that post to track down which of his podcasts cover that topic. Was it in the fathead video?

I have been a little quiet on the lists for the last couple of days and have some catching up to do.
(Nothing to do with the forum, I witnessed some bullying on facebook the other day which upset me so much that I needed to walk away from the computer for all but work related tasks for a little while).

I was thinking about the relationship between BSD and keto diets following a different discussion on the forum. – All diets are keto diets, because by its very nature the principle of changing your eating patterns to reduce body fat is about putting yourself into ketosis.

It seems to me that the BSD was designed as an 8 week program of a short/sharp fat loss to kick start the healing process for diabetics, so people could then return to a more moderate 5:2 or the med diet and loose weight gradually while keeping blood sugar under control. But there are a number of us who were not necessarily diagnosed as diabetic but were heavily overweight as a result of insulin resistance who having found that the 8 weeks program worked for fat loss have followed repeated rounds of it – that is not necessarily wrong, but perhaps, for those of us on a long journey to reduce body fat there could be some benefits in increasing our knowledge of how maximise ketosis.

Miranda, that was my experience, too! Along with the thirst, I had such a markedly different level of energy when
I got into ketosis that there was no question in my mind that I had achieved this state. At one point, I did some
research on ketostix, but decided against them because they were reported to be unreliable. There are more
reliable blood testing devices available, but somewhat expensive. I think there is always healthy debate on how
many carbs put us in a ketogenic state. For some that is <50. More insulin resistant types may have to take it
to keto diet levels of <20. We all do discover what that number is by simple trial and error. After 23 months of this
WOL I’ve learned to listen to my body, and after 1 year of maintenance, I’m reasonably confident that I now know
how to prevent myself from being kicked out of ketosis. I’ve never used Mosley’s recipes or menu plans, which
I understand don’t include carb counts but calories only. I found it simpler to learn how to eliminate the simple
carbs and sugar from what we prefer to eat. This is only my anecdotal experience, but I found that the thirst
dissipates after awhile, and didn’t follow me for the 10 months it took to lose 140lbs on the Fast800/20. I hope
that it is the same for you! 🙂 🙂 🙂

Crackers are now deleted from my diet! After a successful five months at goal weight I decided to introduce some crackers into my diet; the really crispy ones with seeds on top – MISTAKE! Weight started creeping up! Have now gone back to strict 800 and very low carb and have lost 3.2lb in three days! Dug out my Gary Taubes “Why we get fat”for some bedtime reading revision and am again back on track. This must go back to my old habit of getting to goal and then thinking I’m safe to eat “normally” again. I really admire the long term maintainers on here for their resilience and determination. I’ve always thought that losing weight is the easy part of losing weight and keeping it off is when the hard work really starts. I’ve learnt my lesson with crackers. I will go back to making my home made flax seed crackers. Also, I’ve learnt that my carb tolerance is really low. Being a strict vegetarian It is a variety of food that I miss. I have got plenty of low carb veggie books so will try some new ideas as I am starting to be fed up of eggs!

Keep going everyone. This really does have to be our new way of eating FOREVER!

    Good morning all,
I’ve had not a good day yesterday. I’m so freaking determined to look ‘hot’ for my big birthday mid June that it started causing me stress. I want to hop on the scale I want to be a good mum and cook good stuff but also want NOT to say to my little girl that her mum cannot eat the stuff she’s offering me to ‘share’ (coz that what you teach kids)because she’s on a diet, because the fat tyre around me needs to go and that her mum is fat because she ate the wrong stuff that I £$%^&ed up yesterday BIG TIME. I may have eaten 5 million calories.
I do not want to use the word ‘diet’ ‘not eating’ etc (we made this decision with my husband a long time ago) and yesterday it was a very bad day for me. Have not been her even five minutes and blew everything out of the window. I do not want to hop on the scale to get the shock of my life. I may have ‘pooooped’ even the result from my nutritarian weight loss I was so smug about.
Well, the quicker the birthday is approaching the more willing I am to blow all the good intentions it seems.

Not a good day yesterday so have introduced the ‘fasting’ day today and hopefully the balance may be restored.
Thank you for listening and reading my rant at my stupid self.

We share the ups and we share the downs. We sometimes put too much pressure on ourselves but Skinny-to-be 1 day in the scheme of things is not a disaster, so please don’t beat yourself up about it. My weight loss has been slow this week (up then down), I went to my mum and dads Monday to pick up my little one and mum had made spaghetti bolognaise for dinner! She stresses easily and i couldnt say anything so just sat down and ate what she gave me. It’s just one meal though and I know I am on the right course.

Heres to a good day today.

Thank you, Cleverblone. It’s really hard around 4.5-year old when so many kids have food phobias etc, hence we never discuss our weight gains or losses with my husband in front of her. that’s why we don’t words ‘diet’ ‘put weight on’ ‘lost some weight’ etc because she’s very clever and picks up on things.
It’s depressing I’ve spent so much time trying to lose weight and it did happen but took me from new years till now to lose a stone that the needed two stones between now and June 18th seems not even like a flicker of a light at the end of the tunnel.
that what drives me nuts. the more frustrated I am the worse it gets. I NEED, desperately, at least a stone in the next 7 weeks to come off but at this rate it’s just not happening. Probably a two stone added than lost 🙁
Thank you for your words, though.

My daughter is 3 1/2 she knows everything that goes on, so agree you have to be so careful. I think she is like her dad luckily. She has her easter chocolate sitting on the cupboard, she will ask for some, take a small bit then put the box away. If it was mine I’d eat it one sitting!

A stone in 7 weeks is 2lb per week. You can do this!

Cleverblonde73 – apologies for ‘ignoring’ you. Just had my lunch break and instead of feeling sorry for my sorry @ss I went for a walk. A brisk walk. Did about 40 minutes.
I am absolutely on par with you when it comes to chocolate. Well, not just chocolate, everything! I like tastes, textures, smells and chewing (just like a cow :-)) and therefore if there is anything in the vicinity and is edible, I’m on it, usually.
My little girl knows exactly when she’s had enough and the same applies for the chocolate as your little ‘un’s.
I’ve made a conscious decision to NEVER force her to eat the last potato or a bean or tomato or one last bite of toast if she tells me she’s had enough. I hated when my parents made me always to think of ‘the hungry children in Africa’ and therefore had to finish off the last potato, bean or tomato or toast….and look where it got me. I hope this approach will ensure she will never ever end up on forums like this feeling exactly as I’m feeling today.

Have bought some inulin today as suggested so I am going to incorporate into my routine every other day as a preventative measure so 🤞

Also Mandy, 7.5lbs is no mean feat!

Interesting reading about others experiences losing weight around kids… I also try to avoid talking about dieting or not eating something around mine. Luckily they haven’t noticed much, probably because even before starting TWE I was also eating all the good stuff, just topped up with awful amount of white carbs and sugar 🙄
Also they do sport everyday so they would often eat at a different time anyway, I just sit with them at the table with a cup of tea and say I’ve already eaten or will eat later.

Re the transit issues, the first weeks were pretty hard going, hah! On week 4 now and things have definitely improved.

    Good morning all,
Congratulations Denise, that’s freaking marvellous! 23lb! I want this too, badly. That’s why I was fasting and was on coffee, warm water and herbal teas yesterday as the day before was just horrendous.
We do have a ‘fat club’ at work with two other girls and our usual weigh in days are on Fridays so needless to say yesterday’s fasting also helped a bit. To them I can report a half lb loss from last Friday but I know only well what damage I’ve done the day before. Am looking forward to Tuesday morning to see what change (if any) I can see for being here for a week.
It’s so nice reading people’s stories and especially those with kids around. I would also tell my little girl in the morning that I’ve already eaten because I woke up early in the morning and was hungry if she wants me to share her toast with her or so…
Well, here’s to the days ahead and hopefully it’ll be a good number on Tuesday morning showing.
All the best to you all.

Congratulations on the weight losses Mandy and Denise, that’s fantastic! And Skinnytobe, well done getting right back on it – quite often a bad day turns into a bad week, so good on you.

I have to say that I weigh in every day. Before I started this, when I weighed in at SW or WW I would think well weigh in is ages away I could just eat this and this…and so it went on and that’s why I’m in this mess 😑 So I feel much more control when I weigh every day, but I’m hoping, with time, that I can trust my new eating habits and not have to weigh so often – I like Allie’s suggestion of twice a week.

    Have a good day😊

    Hi all,
I apologise in advance for a grumpy post, but I am just feeling rubbish today. A combination of stalling with weight loss (I keep my faith that the whoosh will come!), stress with moving house in 5 weeks and work drama. I kind of binged today after lunch. I treated myself to a toasted cheese and chutney sandwich for lunch, made on low carb bread. I then ate another piece of the bread, and then another. To be fair, at 272 calories and 15g of carbs for the 4 slices of bread, it’s a stark comparison to my last binge of 5 jam doughnuts (950 calories, 146.5g of carbs) So that it the silver lining.
I am just still struggling with self control, especially when it comes to emotional eating. I also feel I am so close to my target weight now (it is possible I’ll be there before I move house in 5 weeks) that I’m already thinking about maintenance, and ‘allowing’ myself more food than usual. I echo what others have said about how when you’ve got more weight to lose, this WOE becomes more than a diet. For me, the end is in sight but I still have my carb cravings and sweet tooth.
Sorry guys, I am just having a 💩 day and needed a moan! I am away with friends this weekend, the bbq tonight I’ll just have the meat and salad, the Spag Bol tomorrow I’ll take my own Konjac noodles, so I feel I’ve planned it well, and hopefully I can avoid the temptation to overindulge.

Just been reading through the comments on ketosis and finally an answer for why I’ve been SO thirsty. I spoke to my boyfriend about this and he smelled my breath and announced it smells of ketones (he’s a chemist)…. So there’s another way of telling if you’ve achieved ketosis lol. Ketones smell kind of like fermenting fruit.

In other news I’ve had a bit of a bad diet day today (so you’re not alone Nicola!) .. For some reason I just want to binge today and I don’t know why 🙁 I’m on 656 kcals and 69g of carbs with dinner still to go….. My resolve has been really strong until now so I don’t know what’s happened.

Hi everyone! I’m sorry that a few of you are struggling a bit at the moment. I think weight loss and maintenance
involves more than just dietary changes, and the learning curve we all experience is influenced by psychological
factors as well, self sabatoge being the most obvious one. We had a very honest and insightful conversation
on this very subject in the last 4 week challenge entitled “No April Fool….” I would never wish to paraphrase any
one’s posts, so it might be very helpful to read through the second half of those collective observations. It’s always

My immediate thoughts turned to Cadbury’s chocolate and Morrison’s doughnuts. Thank goodness I live miles away from shops and keep nothing of a similar nature in the house. I do wonder how strong my will would have been otherwise!
I honestly don’t think any of us are immune to bad days and blips..it seems it’s “par for the course”

    Hi Sadteacher,

I personally find fizzy water easier to drink rather than plain, and soda water with a slice of lime is more palatable. I do add Stevia to make it a little sweeter, but nowadays just one tea spoon to a pint, so its just a little nudge towards sweetness.
There is much made of having bone broth, apparently its helpful for trace elements. I haven’t checked the labels, but sometimes in the past when I wasn’t feeling well and had a craving for something a little different I made up a mug of very weak gravy using onion gravy granules.

Mandy, I also find it easier to drink more water if I have fizzy water. I especially enjoy lightly sparkling Mineral water.
You can use fruit tea bags to flavour fizzy water, as well as lemon/lime slices.
You could also have fruit tea (either hot or cold). Some members in the Facebook group I’m in have a chicken oxo cube in hot water with a dash of milk – it’s like a cream of chicken cup a soup and only 25 calories.
I had a nice surprise yesterday – an overnight whoosh with a drop of 900g, about 2lb. It was funny as I’d spent the morning before running to the bathroom, every 1/2 hour. I couldn’t understand how I was passing so much water when I hadn’t drank that much, or drank any coffee that day.
I haven’t had a whoosh for a while, the only difference I’ve made in the last few weeks is to consciously drink more water.
When I first started BSD (Jan 2017) I was good with my water intake, but I’d got complacent over the last few months and stopped tracking my fluid intake.
As for cravings and bad days, I get those too. I just jump back on plan at the next meal or the next day and don’t get too upset about it. The way I look at it is that I’m going to be following this WOE for life, as it suits my health and well being. There will always be times when I give in to cravings – I couldn’t say now that I will never again eat cake for example. But when I do eat it nowadays I have a much smaller portion than I used to, and I enjoy it without the guilt, because I know that 90% of my diet is healthy.
    Enjoy the weekend everyone 🙂

Hi SueBlue! I really like your idea of fruit tea flavored water for the upcoming summer months. I’m going to use
it for variety, and will be investigating flavor options next trip to the grocery store. Too much carbonated water
seems to cause me bloating, but I can’t see any reason why citrus slices, fruit tea, and still water with a handful
of ice wouldn’t be wonderful! Thank you for the suggestion 🙂

I also hear that cucumber slices with mint is very refreshing! Is calorie free, carb free( no artificial sweeteners)
sparkling water with fruit flavoring readily available in the U.K? I allow myself one can with dinner in place of wine.

    Have a great weekend!

Hi Jillie! Your mention of trace elements reminded me that there hasn’t been any discussion of salt in awhile.
We switched from kosher salt to pink himalayan sea salt in cooking, following study of optimal nutritional choices several
years ago. Lots of trace minerals! Because we consume so much water with this WOL, salt, as well as trace minerals,
may end up stripped from our bodies, and require some replacement 🙂

Another note on salt … fizzy water sometimes contains high levels of salt so worth checking the bottle. Allie I also use pink Himalayan salt but I don’t find it as ‘salty’ as regular salt so find I use more. Not sure if this is a good thing or not. I must admit since eating this way I do find I need more salt in my food but no idea why.

I have noticed that as my taste buds changed and I lost the craving for sweet things, it was replaced by an increase in a desire for salty flavours and an increased thirst. I don’t know which way round it starts, I wonder if it could be because your body needs water to break down fat your tastes change to encourage you to meet that need, or it could be as your body adapts to lower blood sugar levels your tastes change.

    Hi guys,
Perhaps the black cloud is related to the drop in temps. It really feels chilly again today. I find that it doesn’t help with the scales. Mine definitely seem to think I am a kg plus heavier when the atmosphere is damp (which includes when its bucketing it down outside). It sounds like the weather is going to continue to get cooler over the weekend, and then warm up by the weekend.
    ——————
I came across an idea the other month which I think may help with motivation to stay on the waggon. The key to success at making changes is not just setting targets but considering the WHY. – If we think about it, when you say I want to loose 2 stone, or 3 stone you are just talking about a figure on a scale. – If you think instead about the difference you want to make to your life by reducing the fat, its a much more powerful motivator. Are there experiences you want to share with your family and/or loved ones that the fat prevents you from doing? Is there a sport or activity you have had to give up, or have always wanted to do and the fat is getting in the way? Everyone’s WHY will be different.

No problem JGwen. Many years ago I was on a prolonged course of very strong antibiotics and suddenly I couldn’t tolerate salt at all. At that time I was still eating bread but I couldn’t even eat one bite because it was like putting a teaspoon of salt in my mouth. Obviously that was a chemically induced reaction but who knows maybe our ‘chemical’ makeup alters after being very low carb for a period of time. It is strange though that lots of us desire more salty flavours.

    Hi everyone
I’ve wasted the last 4 months, the same few pounds going up and down, ‘maintaining’. I’ve just hopped on the scales and I’m ashamed to see I’ve gained 10 lbs over the last 2 weeks since I got back from Jersey. That’s not falling off the wagon, that’s falling and being run over! A week at home followed by a crazy 1st week back at work hasn’t helped. I know it’s mostly water weight but even so, not good to see the scales go into the higher stone. I’ve read some heartfelt and inspirational posts this morning which has renewed my resolve. I’d stopped tracking, stopped weighing food and most importantly stopped planning. So it’s back to the beginning for me now. I’m sat here with my freshly brewed black coffee, pen and pad and am going to plan my meals for the week ahead. I’ve got all the bsd food in already, i tend to buy pretty much the same stuff each week, but what I haven’t done for months, is decide in advance what I’ll have each day. I do still follow an 18/6 pattern. So thank you all for your honest posts. I’ll be back later, but for now, I need to plan and finish the Taubes book. At chapter 11 now. I’m having a quiet ‘me’ day today.! 👏👏👍😁

Hi KazzUK, I completely sympathise with you on the weight creeping back on as soon as your attention focuses elsewhere. I have had a very social week this week, and as all events were birthday celebrations (mine and the OH) plus catching up with friends we haven’t seen for months, my BSD principles went out the window. BUT, I did enjoy every mouthful as the food each time was superb. However, as you said, back to the basics now – so planning, weighing, measuring and plotting my course of action, and that way we get back on track in no time.
As others have commented, I am sure it is the sudden shift in the weather back to cold and wet (well, at least here in Monmouthshire), causing the black cloud feeling, because I am suddenly back in my winter ‘hibernation’ mode. Oh, for some sunshine.

    Hi all
I lost yesterday’s post but was saying how weird it felt starting 2nd cycle of 8 week bsd on plan but reality of 6 months and WOL.
Had a break through at work rather than mindlessly eating the broken bits of biscuits I threw them away that is a breakthrough!! and a first!!
My clothes are fitting looser but struggling to get a positive tape measure reading but got into an old pair of jeans so must be losing all over.
Read an interesting article on walking that I have done a lot of.
The new government ’10 daily’ actually refers to 10 minutes only which is very doable.
I carried home two heavy bags of shopping on Thursday got on the scales and it was the weight I was in 2016! a sobering thought to how much I was carrying around and how many bags I still need to loose!! No wonder I feel so tired some days, carrying that lot around!!
This weeks focus water, walk & weigh food!
We are all in this for the long haul 1lb a month is nearly a stone in a year, 0.5lbs a week is nearly 2 stone and it has taken us a lifetime to get here. Denise xx

    Hi All
There have been some great posts over the last 24hrs, thanks for all the suggestions about alternatives to water. This morning I made a hot lemon, turmeric, ginger and cinnamon drink had a mug hot and saved the rest to drink throughout the day. A strange taste at first but very warming and not unpleasant so I will fiddle around with quantities of each, the cinnamon stopped the craving for something sweet so a positive there!!
I agree that the wet and cool weather doesn’t help the mood as we always feel better and more energetic in the sun but I’ve heard on the weather that we may be in for a mini heatwave in May so 🤞!!!
    Stay strong everyone
    Mandy 😃

Sadteacher,I’ve never thought of making my own hot drink before, will give it a try.I also struggle with drinking endless water and prefer various different herbal teas and a bovril cube made into a drink is very tasty.I haven’t tried the chicken oxo and milk one yet or the miso although I have them both in the cupboard.Hope we can all have a good weekend and stay on track.Last night I measured 40g cheese and 30g nuts for eating today.Hubby pinched one of my bits of cheese and I told him off as I’d measured it out,we had a good laugh about that.I was hoping to go on a long walk today and do the garden to burn calories but it’s raining again so will do body pump following a video on youtube and do callanetics for toning. This thread is so interesting,I’ve learned loads.

JGwen, no worries! I guess using 2 names could be confusing 🙂 Since we can’t “see” each other, using real names
just represents a different level of intimacy to me….. “JGwen” it is, then! 🙂 🙂 🙂

Wendyq….to make the drink I put 1.5 pints water in a pan with 2lemons sliced 1inch of ginger chopped with 1tsp turmeric and half teaspoon cinnamon brought it to a simmer then turned heat right down for 10 mins strained it then sieved out bits!!! So no difficulty as I’m not a great cook!!! Not really sure if carb count as bits sieved out!!!!

Just had to post as weekends can be a minefield, particularly on the whole eating out front. Had such a nice surprise as my daughter and I popped into the nearest large town to catch up with a friend and have lunch. I was thinking here we go, lets painstakingly scan the menu for something bsd friendly, this was the cafe in a department store. I nearly did a double take, Tiger prawns with baby tomatoes, courgetti with chilli and lime. It was light, tasty and I’m feeling rather virtuous! I managed to speak to chef and say well done for having something low carb on the menu.

How encouraging, Cleverblonde73. The world is indeed changing, just not fast enough! Weekends CAN be a minefield!
Weekdays are more regimented and predictable I think, but weekends are so much more spontaneous and therefor
more challenging when it comes to pre planning, the heartbeat of the BSD 🙂 It does get easier, so just hang in there!
