So I have a stone to lose – not a massive amount but I feel enough of a bloater to get shot of all this extra lard I’ve been carrying around for almost two years now. I’m also completely addicted to bread/carbs and need to do something about it PDQ. So I’m on day 3 of TBSD and I’m feeling really irritable, a bit shakey and rather lethargic. Is this normal? Am I just coming down off my carb/sugar addiction? Anyone’s experience of similar would be appreciated!

Hi Tooey, – yes, sounds like ‘carb-flu’ and many of us on here have been through it. Hold on in there and it will pass – sometimes within a couple of days, sometimes a bit longer, but once you’re through, the terrible carb-cravings gradually disappear. However, be aware that it is also very easy to re-trigger the cravings if you ‘indulge’. There is some interesting stuff in the Clever Guts book about how our gut biome actually affects what we crave, simply put, the sugar-loving gut inhabiters cause cravings to make sure you ‘feed’ them. The Clever Guts book sits so well alongside this WOE, I would definitely recommend reading that too to get the big (or rather, very small) picture.
Incidentally, if you have also given up caffeine, as a lot of people do on this diet, caffeine withdrawal is hideous! I went cold turkey some years ago and ended up having a day off work (and I am never ill!) – I thought I had got flu. Even mild withdrawal can cause headaches and nausea.
Good luck with the plan – there are so many really inspirational and supportive peeps on these forums, they’ll keep you on track.

Welcome Tooey — it’s going to get a lot better very soon — you’re transitioning to fat burning and that takes a bit of time. Keep your carbs very low (20 grams/day) if you can — it will snap you quickly into a very active fat metabolism.

The first week or so can be really rough and testing, but stick with it and you will soon be feeling more energised than you have for ages, sleeping better and seeing positive results on the scales. Remember to keep your hydration up and it’s fine to take painkillers if you are headachy.

    Best of luck ….

Good for you! I just started too, had a few er blips but still ended up with a decent first week loss. First few days suck, literally just suck but it gets soo much easier and the hunger subsides a bit towards the end of the first week. good luck!
