You know that feeling when you are walking along and suddenly think ‘something is missing’ and you realise you’ve forgotten your handbag or coat or something? I was walking down the road yesterday and thought ‘there’s usually something with me that isn’t here’ and then I realised what it was. My stomach!!!! I’m so used to it being between me and my bag that I missed it! In a good way, of course. Not that I’ve exactly got a six pack yet, still more of a party seven!

So that got me thinking, are there any other unexpected consequences to this diet that you’ve noticed? I’d love to hear them! As another example, my kitchen is easier to clean as there is less fat spattered about!

    Over to you!

Not a direct unintended consequence of BSD – but when I cleared my fridge and freezer out the other day (and got rid of lots of ice, even when it’s supposed to defrost itself), I didn’t adjust the temperature.
The fridge is so much colder now! I just took some salmon out (of the fridge, not freezer) and had to zap it in the microwave to thaw it.

I then had to google to find out how to adjust the temperature – on a scale of 1 to 6, apparently 6 is the coldest, bit counter-intuitive!

Thanks Frog, hadn’t come across this thread, amusing.

On the Vegemite thread, the question was asked if my Coeliac OH had used toaster bags to avoid problems with the toaster.
I replied that my OH is a very nice man, really. Shares household chores, hasn’t let recent healtth probs turn him into a grumpy old man….but….he’s not the most patient man with “gadgets” (his description) so I used the toaster bags to avoid contamination by my bread.

However, I haven’t had bread or toast for 8 weeks now thanks to BSD. Unintended consequences? No more bread crumbs so no need for toaster bagsπŸ˜‰

And he has a tiny waist, I think I used to hope that the urban myth about people looking like their dogs would work to my advantage. But until I found the BSD that seemed like fantasyland, now it might just happen as my trousers have stopped rolling down too. I spent far too long in denial about the fact I should have been buying bigger sizes πŸ˜„ It’s just fabulous to have a bit of a waist for trousers to sit on again.

who knew that after 8 weeks and a loss of 8kg so far:
    – I would happily be drinking large glasses of tap water
    – eating eggs for breakfast (and sometimes with tomato and spinach)
    – that I could open the bread bin without grabbing a slice and smothering it in butter, marmalade or marmite
    – that I now realise that previous to this I must easily have been eating more than twice the amount I needed every day
    – that I wouldn’t feel self conscious walking down the road on my own
    – that I can look in a full length mirror without feeling completely depressed.
Next 8 weeks coming up on Saturday. Another 12kg to go.

My unintended consequence is that I can now garden kneeling down on the grass instead of using a ‘kneeler’ that is raised 4 inches off of the ground with two handles either side that are 2 foot off of the ground to help me get back up. I’ve been using this for a good few years and yesterday, without thinking about it, I picked up the plant that needed planning, a trowel and hand fork and walked over to the gap, knelt down without thinking what I was going, and carried on to plant 5 plants, getting up and down with no help! it was only after I realised that I had not been able to do that for over 10 years!

Before BSD I used to think serving sizes were inherently ridiculous artifices that bore zero relevance to the way people actually ate. Now that I weigh and measure, I have a completely different understanding of serving size and how much food I actually need to feel satisfied. I’d been counting carbs for six months or so before starting BSD, but I had no idea how many calories were in my go-to meals. Salad dressing is a big one. I used to use a 1/4 cup of olive oil for every family sized salad. That’s 473 calories in oil alone! On top of that, I usually threw in some cheese — a block of feta, crumbled, 240 calories, half a package of blue cheese, 400 calories — and then of course the veggies.

Nowadays I use exactly 2 teaspoons of olive oil in all my salad dressings, usually with a tablespoon of lemon juice and a tablespoon of vinegar. The trick is to whisk the dressing at the bottom of the salad bowl, add the veg and then toss everything with your hands. Tongs or spoons are nowhere near as effective at spreading around small amounts of dressing. When you use your hands, the dressing distributes perfectly, and it takes much less time to accomplish than it does with tools. The end result is fresh, crisp and delicious. Far better than the much heavier salads I used to make that I thought were great at the time.

    I agree esnecca.

Whilst weighing is a bit of a faff, quite easy when you get used to it and it certainly is an education as you grasp how many calories/carbs everything is

I combined this with finding out how many calories I need for maintenance daily for my age/activity level. It’s only just over 1500 per day (I’m on maintenance, having lost more than 15% of my starting body weight on BSD).

So I’m really pleased not to be eating bread! With a couple of slices in a sandwich and perhaps a slice with dinner, just think how many of my 1500 would have gone without even thinking of it! Wasn’t a doughnut or biscuit eater but they also wouldn’t have helped. No wonder the pounds gradually accumulate.

    Not any more!

He did assure me that it was made by Turks in Germany (Would definitely only have Turkish yogurt, even if most “Greek” yogurt in supermarkets has been no closer to Greece than my cat)

Hi only just found this thread.
I’m at week 10 plus 5 days, I’ve lost 16.28 kilos, my first surprise was that after 41 years of failing at dieting, I could doo this, and it works marvellously.
I had also been pre diagnosed with SLE a serious potentially life threatening condition, with no cure, and after 5 days my serious symptoms had completely reversed.
I am my doctor and practise nurses surgery Guinea pig, as they are so delighted with the change around in my health by using this plan.
My prediabetic bloods are now normal
My liver function is now normal
Just within 48 hours I felt alive with loads of energy.
Shopping for a week is now just 3 bags instead of 6
I at the age of 58 feel more alive like I am 19 again.
I love this plan, and I know when I took a week of at week 9 for a holiday and ate rubbish carbs, I didn’t really enjoy them, and left me feeling unbelievably unwell, put on 2 kilos, and took me 3 days to reverse the muzzy head, lethargy, and low mood.
This plan is for me a miracle and I love love love it. Thankyou doc mπŸ˜€πŸ˜€πŸ˜€

    Hi oldbluejeans πŸ˜€

Thank you. No, they wheel a rail of clothes in, make their selection, take the photos then put the clothes back on the rail! Same with the shoes.

All I brought home was the tights LOL

I did try a similar dress from M&S, which I loved. It was red, with a v-neck. And the right size. But it was a ‘standard’ not ‘petite’ so it needed too many alterations. The shoulders were too wide and the sleeves much too long (I’d not need gloves LOL).

Hopefully I’ll find some when I’m in Italy for the next few weeks. But I don’t know if they cater for ‘petite’ ranges – I’ll soon find out LOL

I have just bought some fabric (red) to make a skirt. When all else fails, get out the sewing machine! And, yes, I could have altered the dress, but I decided it just wasn’t worth it. Jersey fabric is not the easiest to work with for me, unfortunately. And I don’t see why I should pay good money for clothes, then have to make alterations before I can wear them. Shortening something is about as far as I’ll go when I buy something. Mini skirts were/are great for me – they’re knee length LOL

Hello Captainlynne and all – I lurk a bit round the boards and popping in on the mention of clothes (work in fashion) to say that Italian brands fit is generally a bit “neater” than UK ones – certainly at the more premium end of the market – so you may find some good styles to suit your newly svelte frame!

I’m still bang on target during maintenance (carbs generally under 75g per day max which is easily achieved) and am updating wardrobe with size S jackets and 6 (!!) and 8 trousers!

Good luck to all – keep MEASURING and watching those carbs!!! πŸ˜‰

Thanks for the advice. From memory, many of the clothes shops near where my friends live are international chains, but there are also some independent ones.

I think the time has come to be adventurous 😱 Finances often dictate supermarket clothes, but that’s not working at the moment! Perhaps I need to spend more on less, that fits better and lasts longer.

I’ll be shopping with my friend, and can trust her judgement (and her translation!) πŸ˜€
