Thanks Wendy, I confess I tumbled off the wagon this weekend mainly wine, but also a mince pie! In addition, as we were away all w/e, the exercise thing stalled too. However, for this week, I am looking to get that exercise thing going again, before the next w/e away! Nothing good to report on the weight front, other than I’m maintaining .. would prefer discarding, but right now I’ll take maintaining.

Good morning Wendleg,SunnyB and cbk19 and everyone else that is joining us.. confession time 🙃I did great all day yesterday then hubby cooked chips and I had a small handful that I pinched off his plate 😕 I dunno why I did that but it’s done and I felt really guilty after I’d eaten them..I even knew as I was scoffing them that I shouldn’t be eating them but swallowed them anyway .sheeeeesh talk about self sabatage.
I know I have to put that behind me and keep going but I’m very disappointed in myself..specially after coming here and saying how determined I am to eat only good stuff…
Just adding to the sugar bits on the last few comments from u..I never had sugar in tea but loved sweets, not so much chocolate but anything chewy .. I just stopped buying them, it took a couple of weeks but the craving for them soon disappeared and now it’s easy to walk past them or decline if anyone offers me any.
Right I’m off to have a shower have a great day onwards and downwards ☺️❤️

Hi Wendleg, I can’t believe it’s the start of the week already!

I’m with you, SunnyB and Waitaminute, I’m in for another week too. Still sticking to my daily meditation and HIIT three times a week. And Kafin’s in too.

JGwen, I tried your salt in coffee trick and I consider it inspired. I quite like black coffee, but I also like the slightly different – definitely less bitter – taste that comes with the addition of salt. Thank you for that idea!

I also tried cinnamon because I’d been told that does the same thing. But because I wasn’t thinking it through, I just added it to the cup the way I did with salt … and of course it didn’t dissolve! Kafin very gently explained that cinnamon is supposed to be added to the beans not the cup lol Live and learn, I’ll do it that way next time.

    Have a good week,
    Elky

Hi wendleg. I’m reporting for duty!! Week 3 of pledging – so I’m adding to abstinence from wine and salted peanuts by pledging to go to bed before midnight every night. My pledge last week turned out to be an ambition rather than a proper pledge. But I’m dusting myself off for a better week. Good luck to all!

Hi all, still sticking with it. Lost 1.5lb this last week. Still doing 4 x 50 min exercise routines and no alcohol so far. Still got 7.5lb to lose before Christmas and I dont think I will quite make that but I will do my best. Every pound counts.

    Hi all
I had a fall last night and cracked my wrist it was a real shock as banged my head as well so immediately after crying etc I had hot chocolate and a biscuit almost without thinking. Been hanging around casualty all morning. Feeling better now but food off plan. Had a bagel with scrambled eggs feeling like I ‘deserved’ it. Feeling better now so going to get back on it. Feeling stressed about work with wrist etc trying to just go with flow but very annoyed as was doing so well. Trying not to use it as an excuse !! Good luck all for this week

Hi caronl ! Wishing you a great Week ! Ooh there is no way I could stay up till midnight ! I am often in bed by 9.30pm, in the Week anyway. Are you not drinking wine at all like sunshinegirl ? You are doing brilliantly by the way SG. My discard is very slow these days but as you say ,every pound counts. I think my body is changing though…

So sorry to hear of your fall ckb19 🙁 I can imagine it was a shock and the need to comfort yourself with food is natural. I understand about feeling you ‘deserved’ those foods. It’s like offering a sugary treat to a toddler who falls down to stop them crying ! I was so guilty of that . I used to put honey on my youngest son’s dummy !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OMG that would probably be classed as abuse these days !!!

But back to you ckb19…glad you are feeling a bit better.Don’t worry about today’s food choices. Yes, you were doing so well and you will continue to do well. Get back on plan and think of making healthy food choices to help you heal and ward off inflammation. I hope work is not too challenging.Take care xxx

No new pledge from me. It is getting really quite chilly in London and I refuse to have my heating on for more than two bursts a day. I am adding chick peas to my chicken/spinach curry for extra fuel; and have also had a bit of bread and the no wine rule has not been strictly observed. I’ll get back into this in January, so next winter i will hopefully be “maintaining” at target…

Half an hour on that would keep you warm….reminder to myself to do it !!!

So hope you escaped a cast. 6Turkeys I know what you mean about the comforting warmth of carbs – particularly after a wet dog walk!. But i am still trying to resist. Perhaps we should each pick our favourite soup for others to try. Mine is still the red pepper and cauliflower one – was it Verano’s recipe?

    Hi jennie10
I read your recent query about fasting on the November thread but thought I would answer on here as you are one of the weekly regulars too.
I am a fan of fasting because it fits in with my work routine on certain days. When at work I never eat breakfast or lunch so am doing OMAD . On my half day I could have a light lunch and evening meal so basically a 16:8 routine. Every week I incorporate a longer stretch where I fast from Wednesday evening until Friday afternoon because Thursday is my longest working day…so a 40 hour + fast.
I feel perfectly fine , no hunger or ill effects and I can even do my over sixties exercise session while fasting. It’s not exactly high intensity but I still have to get the old bod moving.
I definitely have a slimmer waist and very little midriff fat or loose skin but I still have belly fat which is shrinking but at a very slow pace.Legs are definitely slimming down. It’s interesting because this is all happening without massive drops on the scales.I am still hovering around 11 stone at 1m63/5ft 4.
I do think fasting has its place even though it doesn’t suit everyone and it does mean a period of adaptation. I don’t see it as ‘ damage limitation’ after a carb binge because I have no temptations like that but it works for me because it fits in with my routine. I think the idea of fasting at times throughout the week for maintenance would definitely be worth considering.
That’s my experience anyway, Jennie xx

I can recommend the roasted broccoli and cheddar soup which is in the recipe section! Red pepper and cauliflower sounds yum too so will look that one up. Don’t worry Wendleg, I am not giving up – that would be throwing baby out with the bathwater! This time last year I was tucking into crumpets with jam every afternoon, plus lots of sourdough – neither of those have made it back into my shopping basket. I have tho had odd sarnie (ready made – lazy me…), and as I mentioned adding chickpeas to curry , plus portion sizes have increased a bit. For tonight (and it will give me abt three other meals..) I am doing cottage pie with celeriac mash. So have not gone completely off the rails (even with red wine added to the mix…). I am not however worrying about discarding this side of 2020 – just staying where I am and fitting into the new clothes I have acquired in the last few months. Plan is to start 2020 (with the wonderful prospect of longer days..) as I did 2019 – proper round of seriousness. Onesie sounds very cosy – and you do well to remind me abt exercise bikes… All best wishes to you all!

Oh that’s good 6T , we would hate to lose you. I maybe fear people deciding it’s not worth making an effort with the festive season beckoning and postponing any ‘changes’ until the New Year . In my experience that set me up for dismal Januaries when I just felt yukky about myself. So if anyone is hesitating..there really is no better time than the present !

I like the sound of that roasted broccoli and cheddar soup, 6T !!

I can’t find the recipe for red pepper/cauli soup so it would be great if someone could jot it down here please! It is good to have virtual eyes looking over my shoulder on here – I was very tempted to have second helping of (very tasty) cottage pie with celeriac mash but Wendleg I thought of your words and resisted… I did have bit of yog and berries for pudding, so hardly depriving myself but the extra serving would have been unnecessary (and I would have had the yog as well anyway!).

Hi 6t – found it in soup for all seasons thread. It’s Verano’s recipe

    CAULIFLOWER and RED PEPPER SOUP
    Approx 6 servings
    1tbs olive oil
1 medium/large head of cauliflower, cut up
4 red peppers, skin removed & chopped (grill/roast/flame leave in sealed polythene bag to cool, then skinned)
    1 large onion, chopped
2 or 3 sticks of celery, chopped
2 vegetable or chicken stock cubes
    1.5 litres water
    1tsp smoked paprika
    salt and pepper to taste
Saute the onions and celery together in olive oil until soft.
Add smoked paprika and cook for 30 seconds or so.
Add cauliflower, stock cubes and water and cook for about 20 mins.
Add red peppers and cook for a further 20 mins or so.
    Whizz with stick blender/liquidise.
Makes a really lovely creamy soup.
About 80 cals and 10g carbs per serving but you need to weight the uncooked ingredients to be accurate.
    Freezes well.

    Hi Wendy,
Thanks again for yesterday’s post. It really helps to get other people’s experience. It sounds like you’ve really got a good routine going there and a nice mix of intermittent and extended fasting. So my history is I did BSD in 2016 when I was diagnosed T2. I got down to 9st (from almost 15) and maintained for pretty much 2 years. I gradually put 2 stone back on again (although I always stayed low carb), went back to BSD800 and have recently got back to 9st. It’s funny because my experience was quite different from yours in that I lost the weight, quickly at first and then with plateaus etc, but my measurements were slow to change. My waist measurement was the slowest to change and even now at 9st I’m about 1 and half inches away from ideal waist/height ratio.

I know I’ve got rid of a lot of visceral fat as my pancreas and liver kicked in again early on, my bgls went back to normal and my fatty liver disappeared. But, I just think it might help improve things further if I get closer to that waist/height ratio. (Balanced against that I don’t want to lose too much more weight.). So that’s one of the reasons I thought about fasting. The other is about helping with maintenance, boosting my metabolic rate, and body repair etc.

I do two meals a day and 16:8. I’ve done the odd 24hr water fast to lower bgls (generally they’re on an even keel but stress or illness can raise them) so I know I can build those in long-term for maintenance. I’ve done a few extended fasts – 36 to 42hrs – but they’ve always been one-offs. I’ve never really been able to do them routinely but think that’s what I might have to do if I want to try to reduce my waist size. I’ve got Jason Fung’s Complete Fasting book so I’ll re-read that, start slowly with 1 day and build up to extended fasts after Christmas. Will try one a week. There you are – worked it out – thanks, Wendy.
Of course, now I’ve just got to do it.

    Jennie xx

    Hi Everyone,
I’m starting my new way of eating today after a few false starts. I’m jumping in a few days late so hope that’s OK. I’m doing the Fast 800 and TRE. I have been going to a gym twice a week for years to do strength training but I lack the motivation to go for walks or do other aerobic activity. Lately I’ve been feeling anxious and not sleeping. I think because I feel a failure after so many weight loss attempts. I weigh 98K. So I’m making the pledge for one week starting today. I’m in Australia. My last successful attempt was with WeightWatchers 10 years ago when I lost 15K but have put it back on. My husband has recently retired and having him at home doesn’t help. He seems to be eating constantly. I’ll report back tomorrow.

I’ve had a completely beige-carb loaded day so need to make a pledge to get back on track the remainder of this week. Finding it so hard, especially when it’s considered festive to indulge in mince pies, hot chocolate, mashed potatoes. The lazy woman in me just says “oh, what’s the point, you can get back on track on January instead of trying to discard body fat before the feast that is Christmas”. Honestly need a good hard kick up the butt! Even just today has left me feeling jittery from sugar and generally bleh.
Any advice on hanging in there is very welcome haha.

I did enjoy them but now figure I can do a lot between now and Christmas so here goes. We can do this.

Hi everyone. Feeling glad it’s Friday after a tiring Week. It’s reports time which means late meetings coming up . Being positive I can maybe slot in a few fasting periods when I get home so late. 3 weeks to go before we break up …

I hope our lovely American members had a great Thanksgiving celebration . Is it possible to stay low cab for Thanksgiving ? I bet it is.

Welcome Riccoh ! We have several regulars from Australia on the thread . Don’t dwell on your “failures” ..Noone fails . Just .look ahead to the new you . I started at 100kg and it really is possible to discard the weight that is making you feel despondent. Your health is going to improve, you are going to feel great . Plan your meals for the coming Week so you can resist any carby temptations your hubby produces. You could get him on board too ?

Hi Strongcurves. Giving you a gentle” kick up the butt “. Don’t fall into the trap of just sliding into festive indulgence . You can still eat well without including sugar and mash. My advice on hanging in there is to examine why you want to discard the weight .What are your priorities ? How do you want to feel in January ? What is more important …a mince pie or your health ? Can you hear me nagging a bit ? 😉 Write down your reasons…keep them visible at all times .Plan your foods and remember festive foods are not compulsory 😉

Sounds like you are well prepared and know how to proceed with your maintenance. Reversing your T2 and reaching 9 stone is a fantastic result and I feel sure your determination will enable you to get to where you want to be with reducing your waist size.It is intriguing how body shapes change and yet the scales don’t necessarily register any significant changes. Yes please Wendy, I need some of that nagging! Things went badly wrong this w/e with me not having any sensible food choices whilst stay with some relatives. Right now I’m feeling bloated and quite under par, following way too many carbs over the last couple of days.

Sorry you are feeling a bit uncomfortable SunnyB. Maybe that’s the secret….just remembering how carb excess makes you feel . I understand it’s tricky when you are not in charge of the food available. You know what to do though. The worse thing would be sliding into a mindset where you think the damage has been done so you might as well carry on with the excess especially with Christmas temptations beckoning…………..so what the heck !!!

Consuming carbs really does set up an infernal cycle of cravings which can be hard to resist.

I don’t think you will do that SunnyB. If you are now back in your home environment you can quickly get back in control. You have always enjoyed delicious foods so I am sure you will soon be back on track. Yes, I will continue with the weekly pledge thread as long as people find it helpful. There are 3 weeks until I leave for the Uk so I will do my best to support anyone who is struggling !

I am not planning to have a break from my usual routine at Christmas as far as my food choices are concerned , even though I will be in the Uk.. I just adapt and if need be go shopping to make sure I have everything I need. That’s me because as I have said before I am a bit stubborn 😉 😉
What is everyone else planning ? If you are afraid of drifting into carby temptations, just shout out and we can all support each other

Hi folks, I’m still here, plugging away.

I am not going to be strictly on plan over Christmas. I expect that I will still be somewhat low carb – except for Christmas day itself – because there’ll be a lot of meat on the bbq and salad (I’m in Australia). But there will also be some sweet things that I don’t usually have, which I know will push the carbs up. And there will be alcohol, so calories are going to be *much* higher than I usually try to achieve.

But I’m OK with that. I plan not to stress about it while I’m away at Christmas, and just get back on track with an Egg Fast once I’m home again. I’ve found that a successful way, for me, to get over any period of “carb loading”. Then I can just get back to my normal routine.

    Hugs, Elky

Here I am Monday morning and I have gained 3lbs since Wednesday. Dont know what is going wrong, I am not sure I could have gained that much over such a short time if I had been completely stuffing my face. Maybe I am holding onto fluid for some reason but I will not give up. If it is just a fluke of nature then I should be able to lose it again very quickly. There is no chance of me abandoning this way of eating (no carbs) as I know how well it keeps me and I also know I havent gone off plan as my BG is still in a good place at around 100 (5..5).
