Hello everyone, it is another glorious day here in the UK. As I mentioned in last weeks thread, I had a little blip last week, not in the eating, I stuck to that, but I got really itchy skin and a rash. I’m pretty certain it was keto rash, as it fitted the description perfectly. Thankfully mine was only very slight.I followed the advice I found, and am delighted to say it has cleared up & the abdominal itching has gone. I’m hoping it was a temporary issue, and have dropped my carbs back to around 20 again to see what happens. Link is here if it’s of interest to anyone. https://www.dietdoctor.com/keto-rash-people-itch-low-carb

I am back in my shorts again, and managed a 21 second plank today Skinnytobe 😄

I am loving this WOE, it makes me feel really happy. Has anyone else noticed that? It makes such a difference to my overall mood.

Goal for this week is to lose another 2lb, and maybe increase my plank to 22 seconds 😄

    Have a great weekend everyone.

She’s really supportive. My sister is a PT and she has extolled the virtues of intermittent fasting for a good while.

The support is definitely in place – it’s up to me to smash it!

How do people feel about picking the start day so far in advance?!

Thanks for your lovely reply – I’ll aim to post updates when I start.

Allie, it’s the same everywhere. The problem is that the media are scared to cover it in case they lose advertising revenue – so where it is covered it’s given the slant of a ‘fad diet’.
Well, it is taking hold; we can buy carb free noodles, courgetti are quite usual and restaurants generally don’t use sauces on meat.
Yesterday Aseem Malhotra met Tom Watson, deputy leader of the opposition, who has lost 94lbs on the Pioppi diet which got some media coverage.
It’s a slow business, not helped by the refusal of GP’s to open their minds, but bit by bit it will happen.

Me too, Maggie! I think that it is nothing short of tragic that our countries aren’t producing more new Doc’s
with a dedication to preventative medicine. Just think of the effect that would have on reducing costs for
insurance co.s as well as patients! That flies in the face of “profits” though, doesn’t it? I think the biggest
impediment in my country, and why our “food pyramid” is so out of date, is the influence of the grain lobbies
and sugar lobbies on our legislators. Absolutely a conflict of interest when these multi national firms contribute
to political campaigns. Rather obscene, when you think about it! Keep up the good fight, one case at a time.
We may be small in number, but we can have a BIG voice 🙂

It’s really encouraging to hear that you’re feeling better, YM2be! Our bodies are unique mechanisms, and I’m
certain that yours is in a state of confusion at the new manner of eating that you are asking of it 🙂 There have
been numerous posts on how we lose fat, but in the event that you haven’t come across one of these yet…
basically what is happening physiologically is that as we lose fat from our fat cells, the fat is replaced with
water. Eventually the fat cells collapse, and fat and water are released. This is known as the “whoosh effect”.
When it happens, the scales can show a loss of 2-3 lbs. overnight. Hormonal changes, as well as “transit
issues”can cause a slight gain too. You’re doing great, don’t worry…It all comes right in the end 🙂
    Have a great weekend!

Hi Alibob. From one “Ali” to another, I’m over the moon for you! Your story is nothing short of inspiring, and

much wisdom to share. The last sentence of your post certainly resonates with me. The specifics of this
WOE is something that we discover by trial and error, but we are all so fortunate to have a community
where wisdom and knowledge prevail in helping us to find what is successful for us, not only for reversing
BGL problems and weight loss, but the greater “prize”, maintaining it! Thank you for posting today. I

Thank you for all the tips everyone, so much help & inspiration on these lovely forums. I’ve never heard of that version of Becks, Harry, definitely look out for it as I like Becks. I’m not sure how well I’m doing sticking to 800 calories. I’ve got My Fitness Pal but I don’t weigh things so my portions are probably out. My kitchen scales are ancient things, they’ve never heard of grams, happen I’d better invest in a new set. I bought a new set of bathroom scales last week as I was sure my old ones were broken as they never shifted day to day, but the new ones showed the same 🙁
Tesco do good individual pots of their own brand full fat Greek yoghurt, only £1 a pack of four, they come in blue & white packaging. There’s a low fat version as well, same price, paler blue pack. It’s easier than guessing amounts out of a big tub.
Gosh it’s hotter than ever! Doesn’t help that I’m high up very near the moorland fire that’s raging just up the lane. Not used to this tropical weather, it’s always windy but weirdly it’s a warm wind! Usually you can tell which season it is by whether the constant horizontal rain is warm or freezing.

Afternoon all! Feeling less tired and achy today thank goodness. Weighed myself this morning though and had somehow managed to put on a lb! Despite being under 800 cals yesterday. Bit confusing but I’m blaming it on the scales, and assuming it’s just a blip! 😂

Oh Alibobs! This is wonderful news! Thank you so much for coming back and posting your update! It will help so many others who are just starting.
Wow, your loss is fantastic! You must feel on top of the world. You rocked this!
And yes, the “Why We Get Fat” book by Taubes literally saved my life — Allie and I never stop recommending it here on the forums. I share your righteous anger that the guidelines promulgated by my own government are not the healthiest way to eat — it is unbelievable that they are so off base but I think are pressured and dictated by big corporate interests and money.
I also worry sometimes that they also aren’t sure how we would feed the world if we started to recommend another way of eating.
Anyway, huge congratulations on your success. Please keep posting when you can! Your success is a beacon of hope to the people just starting or struggling.

I’ve been out at lunchtime and got some more peppers, carrots and celery I will cut some up and put them in a plastic container in the fridge – yes you are right, the fridge is always the first port of call if something happens, like other people reach for a cigarette I suppose. I’m very lucky I don’t have an emotional attachment to food, he knows I’m stressed because I chew the inside of my lip! I just need to be one step ahead with my preparation I suppose, I probably should let him do it himself but I know he wouldn’t weigh stuff and like I say I don’t want to nag! it is lucky he has always eaten healthily (he has a Mediterranean mother) but portion control has been the issue
he does have pretty good control, he had his six monthly blood test recently and we are waiting to see what that says, we hope it might open up dialogue with the gp surgery again if it is good I would love to have support from them as well but it is nice to talk (virtually) to people understand

Very true, S-G. Allie and I are firm friends these days and we skype regularly. We will meet one day, that’s our goal! • Thanks for the info cattie. It seems he is getting good control and it is important he continues on this path. As for the treats, I think jam is out of the question. Sounds like he eats for reasons of stress but maybe also the habit of turning to the fridge in the evening and his treats might be something he wouldn’t normally turn to. That is the point of a diet, to change of daily eating habits for the better. Remember a treat is just that, something you have now and then to stop you from feeling deprived, have some delicious BDS friendly nibbles available in portion sizes, like a 1oz cube of cheese – but he can only have one now and then, not go back to the fridge 10 minutes later for another piece. What about a bowl of fresh or defrosted frozen berries, vegetable sticks like carrots already prepared. Talking of nagging mothers, my grandchildren wont think to eat fruit or veg but if I cut it up and put it in front of them they do.

    Afternoon all,
I’ve just finished the book for the second time.
I’ve decided to take the plunge and try it out!
I’m 33, 6FT and weigh 117kg (18st10) – my BMI is around 35 – so QUITE scary really! I used to have quite an active job – but I’ve recently moved jobs and as such – my lack of movement is also quite scary!

I’ve got two young children and another one the way – and I really need to get healthy to set a good example and make sure I’m around!

My wife is a GP and is very supportive of me trying this out – it’s clear that the opinions of healthcare professionals are changing….
I’m not diabetic in any way – not pre-diabetic either, but i do have a rather large midriff which definitely sets alarm bells ringing.

I lost about 6 stone 10 years ago – reaching 13st8 – a combination of eating lots of chicken and rice, salmon and cous cous and veggies – but I was doing 2hrs in the gym 6 days a week – not sustainable. I ran a 10k in under an hour 2 years ago and I’d love to be able to get back to that level of fitness.

I like the idea of limiting my chances of developing diabetes and other related illnesses before I have a limited ability to do anything about it!

Anyway – if anybody fancies joining me – let me know!

    Take care,

    Tom

    Zinny,

that’s amazing how much weight you’ve lost. Good on you. It looks like you’re doing well since May 2018. When I was reading your posts I made a mental note that I need to ‘listen’ properly because you’re so left right and centre with the knowledge.
I hope your ankle is getting better now and you can step on it without any hint knowing there was a ‘bobo’ as my little girl would say.
Keep dishing out the wisdom as I’m all taker. Still re-reading the book and trying to do my best to make myself skinnier and healthier, although I don’t have any medical problems, I had a gestational diabetes in the last trimester and am therefore now the ‘chance’ to get the ‘real’ diabetes in next 5 years. So …. need to do something about it.
All help, guidance and advise greatly appreciated.

    All the best,

I dont know whether or not to jump in here, but I guess I am already. Skinny and Violinist your blooming friendship is lovely to see but maybe you should start your new thread now so other people get a chance to comment on their weeks progress. I am gobby enough to butt in on your very long conversation but others may find it is becoming very difficult to navigate this thread and get back to the point of it. You are both so enthusiastic I wouldn’t want to dampen that but you have taken over this thread with your personal chit chat. Keep on chatting about the subject to hand which is a communal weekly challenge. Sorry if this offends, it is not meant and I would be happy to follow your progress on your new thread.

    Hi Skinny to be
Im not really that wise, but thanks for the compliment. Three years ago I was almost 18 stone. Im only 5 ft 4 and I looked and felt appalling. I had one of those moments when I felt that I just could not go on being at that weight. By hard work and trying just about every diet known to man and woman and taking up running and walking ( to the dogs delight) I managed to get down to 10 stone 10 lb. Of course what do you do then, why you coast along and think it will never come back. WRONG!!!! it will come back if you eat the wrong things and don’t do any exercise. On holiday in January had a bad fall ( no drink involved ) and damaged my ankle which has put paid to running for the time being, and this stopping of exercise did not help me.
So back on the scales after avoiding them and giving the blood sugar diet a good go. Its fantastic, great food no hunger pains. Ive been on it since 21st May 2018 and I have lost 19 lb to date with another 10 to go to get back to that weight. BMI says I should lose more but Im in my 60s now and as long as I can wear my biker jacket and size 10 jeans again I will be happy.
Im giving the 16: 8 a go now thanks Maggie Bath and JGwen, so my goal is to get back to my lowest and then maybe try for 9.13
I walk early every morning bar Sunday and I try to be as active as I can be. Love the forum and all the help humour and kindness that is to be found here.
NOW back to the office work!

Managed to find a new tonnelle (gazebo). We have had to replace the whole thing as it was not just the cover that was ripped, the supports were bent out of shape too. Another €170 said bye bye to. Hubby always wants to pay a lot of money for one like €500 but it would have still ripped to pieces. Yes Frog the storms are magnificent but the bl—-dy French will not put their electricity underground and the wires are still on poles. So the outages are a real pain in the butt.

My weight is back down to 3 weeks ago and under the 77kg although I am relaxing on the whole losing weight thing and concentrating on lowering blood sugar, although I do know they go hand in hand. Hopefully I can do a bit of both but without the pressure of having to lose a stone in 3 weeks sort of diet. Just take my own time.

I am really enjoying the Food As Medicine course with FutureLearn and would recommend their full range of free courses to anyone. Short courses (i.e. 3 or 4 weeks), around 2 to 3 hours a week mainly watching videos of the tutors imparting their wisdom, no tests or exams but short quizzes to check your understanding and commentary boards where you can discuss your own views and how you are getting on with other course members who are far-flung and varied. On that note, I am noticing more and more BSD’ers doing this course and hope to keep saying hi to them. Have a good weekend everyone and KOKO…

thanks so much for replying, he is type two diabetic, he probably needs to go down about another 2 stone, he has lost 1 stone in recent weeks so is on his way. his blood sugar two hours after eating in the evening is usually around 6 so he has pretty good control and we have been trying to get support on this for the last 5 years ago but our gp doesn’t have time

unfortunately he doesn’t drink wine only beer which I know is the worst thing, he doesn’t drink often but if we have people over to eat or something he will have a couple but that is enough to wreck the diet for a couple of days. he doesn’t have a particularly sweet tooth, the only thing I can think of is jam, things he will go to the fridge for are cheese and sundried tomatoes! he actually has pretty healthy taste but doesn’t feel full easily and as I say turns to the fridge easily if he feels stressed, to be honest just reading that back I see I could pre weigh some cheese so that he only took a small bit, that would be start!

We are equal because next week I go to New York for the week to visit family and will have to eat out nightly, but I am up to the challenge. It will be fun to consider a partner with this. I plan on grocerery shopping for breakfast and lunches. I stay with a sister who does not cook or use her kitchen
