    Hi Lycatu,
Sounds like you have made a good start. Keep cutting down on the carbohydrates. Sunshine girl is right, skip the bread and the wrap — they are simple carbs and the worst for blood sugar control.
It sounds as though you might be very low on protein — that is a great thing to focus on and make sure you get enough. If you don’t eat meat or eggs, how do you get your protein?

Lycatu, don’t beat yourself up, take it slowly and you will get there. You say if you didnt count the carbs in veg you would get to 50g, it is only veg that contains carbs. There are no or very few carbs in meat and dairy. If you dont eat meat do you eat eggs. cheese, yoghurt etc. Please cut out the biscuits and wraps as obvious culprits and stay away from white carbs like pots, bread, rice, pasta and processed foods, plus all the obvious sugars. If you cant manage to cut out completely then at least you are doing some good keeping low – 98g is a start.

Thank you for your prompt reply, Sunshine-girl.
I know I eat too many carbs, quite honestly, I could live on bread alone, however, I have cut down considerably, but find it hard to get down to 50 g or less.. today I have hit 98g, but the only real “carby” thing was a tortilla wrap . The rest (apart from a biscuit) came from various veg ( not potatoes) and lentils. If I didn’t count the carbs in veg I would be nearer 50g. I don’t eat meat, and only limited amounts of fish, purely to get protein and omega oils. I don’t eat eggs.
I have another 7-10lbs to lose to get to my ideal weight. But my main concern is diabetes.
I will have to try harder.

My specs 👓 steamed up when I had been out to see to the poultry this morning, so I was wiping them when a lens fell out! The positive is: I took them to Specsavers, who fixed them whilst we had a snack 🥗 lunch! (Low carb). 😄👓

S-G. At least you tried! You can lead a horse etc!
I feel so lucky that my GP was open minded enough to let me try the low carb way and I found encouragement on these forums!
I find it interesting that people are resistant to the evidence and seem to think we suffer, being unable to eat what we enjoy! My tastes have changed…I still have food that I relish, but find it easy to refuse chips, bread, pasta, rice and cakes, biscuits, suet puddings etc etc!
But I am finding eating out is getting easier…with restaurant staff who know what I mean when I say I am on a low carb diet, and offer alternatives!

My weight was up 3lb this morning…so I went back to weighing and calculating today. That 3lb put me 2lb above my ‘target weight’ !
    Keeping on!
    xx

  • Amazing that on the news tonight they are recommending a low carb diet. Talking about it as if it is totally new. They also interviewed Dr Unwin. Just lets hope the message gets out there as I had a pointless conversation with daughters MIL over Christmas. She says she is pre-diabetic (newly diagnosed) but blames it on the statins her doctor has put her on for high cholesterol. I told her about my low carb diet but she is frightened as she only weighs about 7 stone wet through. I explained she could go low carb but keep up the calories with good proteins and fats like meats, nuts and cheese. Her daughter kept butting in saying she would die without carbs and I couldn’t drill it into her that low carb is not no carb. In the end she told me I must be really miserable as I seemed not to be able to eat anything I enjoyed. This was after she had put out a table full of 10 different cheeses, duck, beef, turkey, chicken, port and ham – all the leftovers. I told her just because I dont want to eat a meal of just cheese and meats doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy my diet. I had to explain that I do eat and like meat and cheese but not in such large quantities and I brought out the salad from the fridge. Talk about leading a horse to water. Makes me sad but I am not her keeper.

I am sure MIL will be soon cured as she is only going to have one piece of cake a day and one orange as a treat. I am of course being sarcastic.

Weight down 2lbs today so will keep on keeping on…

Hi Lycatu, sorry to hear of your diagnosis. The numbers you are quoting on your morning readings are diabetic not pre-diabetic but don’t panic. The home test kits are around 10% to 15% wrong. There are other things to consider like the Dawn Phenonomenon but given time your body will adjust – unless you want to test in the middle of the night – just joking, it is not a good option because you might still be high for a number of reasons.

You say you have lost weight but it might be you have not quite got to grips with the LOW CARB way of eating. Just reducing calories will help lose weight but not impact on the diabetes. Measure your carbs and stay around 50g daily or under. I find it hard to be under 50g. Take another look at what you are eating and post on here if you feel comfortable. We might be able to see some errors. On the other hand you might actually be doing a good job but just need to give yourself more time. Just don’t give up.

Hi, I had a wake up call a few months ago, told I am pre-diabetic.
I started the BSD, a few hiccups along the way (holiday /christmas);but I have lost a stone.
However, I bought a blood sugar monitor, after listening to Dr Mosley, I thought I was doing right testing in the morning before eating. My level was 6.5.! Still pre-diabetic Having read up about Dawn Phenomenon, I wonder if I should test a different time of day. It’s dispiriting to think I have made no headway with pre-diabetes.
    Help and advice please.

Absolutely loving the cruise ship idea for our journey- we all deserve the luxury of a cruise. I loved my cruise in September and as i am not planning a holiday this year until after my toe surgery i will enjoy cruising with you all as we sail off on our 2025 adventure. There is plenty of walking on a cruise ship so I’ll be trying to get my steps in every day. There will be some stormy seas along the way for sure but hang on everyone because we can do this and there will be calm waters too.
It’s good that we are all at different stages on the cruise. Some maintaining, some losing and some struggling a little but there will be lots of opportunity to help and advise each other along the way. We can swap ideas, recipes, top tips and motivate each other. I’m definitely on board in my cabin – see you on deck!

At the moment Im finding it difficult to totally stop the festive eating! Ive given some crimbo fare to a friend who never gains weight( grrrr…) but its so cold out and still so festive in with the twinkly lights and cards and presents still around that I find Im wanting and having a few snacksidents and drinkies here and there,as if it really is still Xmas …hmm, think tomorrow I better take all the crimbo trimmings down and put them away, otherwise I’ll be needing to get the wet lettuces out again…

Hi everyone and welcome all joiners so far. And a big shout out to SUEBLUE who came up with the idea for the title!

YOWZER and POOTLE you are both amazing! Very well done for achieving so much weight loss in 2024 and I hope that this thread will help you to stay on track and have some company in the process. It sounds like the rest of us have specific and achievable goals we want to work on, and I feel optimistic and confident that we can do this together.

CATHY it’s great to have an event to work towards, and I’m sure your slow and steady approach will win through, especially as you are incorporating your medical issues into the plan too. And I hope that all of your procedures go well, ARCTICFOX it sounds as if you are now on top of your diet and know with confidence what you can and can’t eat. I’m sure you’ll be in the best place by your appointment on the 20th. MIXnMATCH and DAWN I am with you on getting back to healthy eating as its so easy to drift into bad habits. I think I need to follow the book recipes slavishly for a couple of weeks until my brain kicks into gear on that one!

SUEBLUE and MARIET I think we’re all in a similar place in many ways. Mariet if I remember rightly you have recently retired? How’s that going? I retire from my school job in April and Sue you are gearing up for the end of the year. New phases of life for us all! But the other thing we have in common is still having some weight to lose, and for me particularly – as you say Mariet – it’s round the belly. That is my goal for this year. I could do with being 10-12lb lighter but am more concerned about. belly fat. Not just the health implications but also appearance-wise. I’m not that tall so the belly fat makes me look instantly dumpy, and also limits the clothes that fit me properly. So above an beyond the numbers, this year for me is all about the belly!

Hello to anyone else reading this – do jump on board and let’s achieve our goals together in 2025!

  • There is a good article in The Telegraph today about the diet called “The Human Being Diet”. Sounds basically like the BSD — focus on healthy carbs (vegetables) and cutting sugar (carbs) and dairy (carbs). There is a “reset”program which would work very well with BSD principles and might be a good starting point for anyone looking to “reset”.
The good news is that this way of eating is becoming so mainstream!

Yowser, so good to see you posting here again. I know in 2024 you have achieved wonderful results on the scales, so thank you for sharing your motivator with us.
Pootle, so glad you had a lovely second ‘Christmas’ and well done on weight maintenance. I’m with you on the sunshine … certainly gives my spirits a lift to see blue sky and sunshine, even if it’s chilly.

    Now to some positives ….
For yesterday my positive was …. lovely lazy day with OH. We did a lot of nothing and it was wonderful!
For today my positive is …. finally started looking at carpet options for our stairs and landing. We replaced the stair case 2yrs ago and it’s taken us this long to get around to carpeting!

What positives have you noticed recently?

Firstly, hope you all had a good new year and that 2025 will bring us all some wonderful positives.

SG, having said that, I was really sorry to hear about your cat. Hope you’ll find comfort in fond memories of happy times with him. Glad you have already been able to register success on the weight front and I’m sure you hit your target in time for your trip.

Good to see a number of you checking in, ready to make the first month of the year count … Good to have you onboard.

I had intended checking in yesterday with a personal start point, but both OH and I had an unplanned day away from tech, so my check in here got delayed. Anyway, thanks to a reduced appetite after the stomach bug I had immediately post Christmas, (a period when I’d normally have been over-indulging and gaining weight) I can report that there was a small loss.

This means that my start point for 2025, is to ditch an excess of 11lb, with the aim to achieve this by mid March. Despite being a very slow loser, it should be doable providing I remain mindful and stay in control.

  • Didnt start diet yesterday as we had a toast to our Toby cat and that led to another. Still lost a pound.

Wendleg, I am sure you will be motivated to get back on track. Worth it to see that little face. It is exactly 100 days to our cruise, so still time for me to reach my goal. I am not upset about my dress as it did fit me in a size 14 but don’t really need 2 special occasion dresses/jumpsuit. I will have to have it professionally taken up on the leg as it has a frill all the way from the neck to the floor which will need someone who knows that they are doing. There is a lady in the next village.

So, no more news today, just going to get on with it now.

Hello everyone and thank you DCT for setting up this thread for us all.
Well done to Pootle and Yowser on your results. What an amazing weight loss you both achieved last year and so inspiring for those of us who struggled for a variety if reasons.
I have decided to take things slowly. Slow and steady wins the race. I have enjoyed the festive period. I have gained 4lb but that will come off when i make sensible choices. I know what I need to do. I am committed to fasting every Monday starting next week. I am going to aim to lose 14 lbs initially and then make another plan. For me it’s going to be small steps. It is 8 years since I started out on my BSD journey and i am still lighter than when i started in 2017 but due to a variety of ups and downs and challenges i am still not where I want to be. My niece gets married in June and I have a lovely dress for her wedding. I’m having my second cataract operation in Feb so it will be lovely to have good vision again. The epiretinal membrane peel has improved my left eye vision. I am having both big toes fused this year so I won’t be able to walk for a while so I plan to try and get some weight off in advance of the ops to give me a head start. I’m feeling optimistic that 2025 could be the year that I come alive!
Let’s do our best to make it happen.

Thanks again, DCT, for again setting up the thread. Looking forward to the year ahead and I also love the idea of a cruise!
My goal is to lose 10kg. That would hopefully get rid of a lot of the excess me around my midriff and belly and reduce the risk of fatty liver disease.
Wishing you all strength and resolution for the year ahead.

  • These days, a lot of people just have erectile dysfunction, which is caused by inadequate blood supply to the penis. The drug cenforce d should be used by everyone to deal with this problem. Reaffirmation gives someone the confidence to engage in sexual behavior again, which makes them feel satisfied during the interaction.

I am so sorry to hear about your cat S-G it’s like losing a close friend who has always been there for you 😢 I felt devastated when both my cats died because they were so supportive of me when I had to spend time recovering from surgery staying close to me on my bed. But I am sure he had a happy life with you so remember those good times with him.
I am still clearing my kitchen of leftovers & because I hate throwing food away some of them have been eaten! However my mindset now is to lose weight so my food order is reflected in eating low carb with lots more veg & protein based meals & fitting in more fast days as well as going back to TRE.
Best feet forward everyone & Happy New Year.

    Happy New Year everyone!
MIxnmatch – LOVE the idea of a cruise ship and yes agree that it’s more comfortable than a bus 🙂
Pootle – well done on your 5st loss, you and Yowzer are an inspiration.

I’m jumping aboard, I need to lose about 8-10kg to get back to the low weight I achieved 2 years ago, so focusing on that first up. Then ideally I’d love to shed another 5kg after that, but first things first.
I’m currently on leave from work and go back on 14 Jan, so using this next 10 days to get back into some healthier habits. Today is off to a good start – I went for a walk with OH this morning, we managed 5.000 steps quite easily, so will gradually build this up.

I have quite a big year this year – turning 60 in September, and planning to retire at the end of 2025, plus continuing the ‘sadmin’ following my MIL’s passing. We also really want to travel overseas this year, so definitely want to be fit and well for that 🙂

So here’s to success for all of us in 2025! 🥂

A full return to health and consistency sound like good goals for me too. I think the thread name is very appropriate! I’m starting out with ensuring that I’m cooking and eating healthy meals on a regular basis that are consistent with my new food list, getting regular exercise, and hopefully down a size or two by the 20th of Jan when I have my appointment with the orthopedic surgeon.
I don’t weigh anymore, as my fluid weight can be so variable with the lipedema, but I know that I have lost quite a bit of water weight over the last week as I have been peeing lots and lots! And I wouldn’t say that I have been that low carb either, just more low carb than what I had been before Christmas. So it’s a good start. The carb flu seems to have gone into remission too for now.
Good to see everyone determined to have a good 2025!

  • Happy New Year to everyone.

First some bad news. Our darling old boy cat died this morning. He was not well since July and on meds but was getting thinner by the day. We were just waiting to find him asleep on the rug – gone. Unfortunately, he tried to jump on to of our very high water heater and didn’t make it and damaged his back and legs. We managed to find an emergency vet and took him to put him out of his pain. Bless you little boy.

Back to the weight news. I have gained 4lbs over the holidays. I set myself a goal for my cruise and looking back I didn’t say what I weighed, just to lose 9kgs. I have a number in mind and still need to lose around 7kgs. New start and will continue with my efforts.

The saga of the dress – I bought 2, size 18 and 16 and both were too big. I re-ordered in a 14 but went shopping before it arrived and found a beautiful red jumpsuit in a size 14. The dress arrived and it was a smidge too tight but would have fit with maybe 5lbs off but I sent it back. At least the jumpsuit could be worn at any special event or going out, so the more practical choice.

Thats my news for now. Will just have to keep on keeping on…

how will my life look if I continue with healthy eating compared to if I stop?
How much do you want this? That’s the question we each have to ask ourselves!”

Hello and welcome! This thread is for anyone who wants to achieve weight loss or other health goals during 2025. It will run for the whole year. You are welcome to dip in and out whenever it works for you. It is the continuation of various previous threads – the most recent being The One Hundred Day Challenge – but anyone and everyone is welcome to join in.

We have viewed previous threads affectionately as a bus journey (for reasons which I can no longer remember!). And this journey will continue throughout 2025 to provide a supportive community for you, wherever you are at. Some of our number may have already achieved their goals and want some company as they maintain. Others may be doing regular or occasional challenges to lose a few pounds or hit other targets, and need bit of encouragement along the way. And others may be completely new to all this and needing some tips to get going.

Whoever you are, wherever you are at, you are welcome to join our 2025 challenge. We are a friendly and honest bunch who do our best, and have fun along the way. I hope that by joining us you will achieve whatever you have set your heart on in 2025.

    Hi Sg and Pootle
    Happy New Year
Pootle that’s a shame….things didn’t work out over Xmas. But hope you’re enjoying your second go!
Sg…sounds like you had a nice fill of food, it’s Xmas after all.
I re started and rhen fell off the wagon last night with crisps etc for new years eve. Feel really gutted I did that but Xmas and new year eve are out the way it’s full steam ahead.
I scare myself that I wont get going again, I don’t have a lot of confidence in myself, my life isn’t easy at rhe moment with my parents etc and food used to be a way of sitting back and enjoying five minutes. But to be honest I think I don’t give myself enough creadance for 2 and half stone loss. And I gave up smoking a few years back. So I have to get the right mindset….get rid of these few pounds that I put on over Xmas and get right back to it. Still have one and a half stone to go
Happy New Year everyone…..thanks again for all your help and here’s to another successful year x

Gosh Pootle, that hat collection is growing well🙂.

Positive for today is perhaps not as easy to find, but have managed to get some laundry processed so that’s a plus. ……. Oh, and I’ve been experimenting with some macrame, which is quite meditative.

Whatever you are doing to see in the new year, enjoy! Best wished to you all for a wonderful 2025.

    Good evening from Portugal!

Sunny thanks so much for setting us on the right path for 2025. I’ve signed in tonight so I can catch up with all the posts until I join you on the 12th.

Wendy you are so right. We really do not know what tomorrow can bring so we do just have to take the bull by the horns. Seventeen years ago I contracted sepsis. Lucky to still be here to tell the tale. My mobility has been restricted and yes we have travelled despite everything but I’m now getting to the point where travel is becoming less attractive. I’m only talking about European flights! So, YES, you go for it while you can, keep as fit and healthy as you can and keep enjoying for as long as you can.

Looking forward to re-evaluating when we get home but for the moment I’m just going to enjoy the pleasant weather here. Sit, relax, and make my plan for a healthy for 2025.

Happy, Healthy and Peaceful New Year to everyone🎉🥂🎉🥂
