I’ve just finished week 2 and I’m 12 pounds lighter, which I’m delighted with. My hubby is very impressed and would like to join me, the problem is he suffers from high blood pressure and is on meds for this,in the book it says it’s not suitable . Has anybody who has high blood pressure done the diet with adjustments, if so what adjustments did you make? Thanks for you time.

My husband suffers from high blood pressure too, and although he isn’t on the diet as such, he tends to eat what I cook which is largely BSD friendly apart from the occasional added baked potato/chips. Given the salt/sodium purging effect I would have thought it would help high blood pressure, so maybe the concern is medicated blood pressure dropping too low?

Mum2, The only thing the book says is, if you are on anti-hypertensive drugs you should watch your bp doesn’t go too low, talk to the doctor etc it is listed under cautionary but does not say you cannot do the diet. Like mixmatches husband mine also has high bp and is on this diet with me in the sense he eats what I do but he allows himself the occasional slice of bread or some rice. If your husband wants to do the diet properly to lose some weight he will also be doing his blood pressure a big favour. I have high blood pressure and take 2 different meds for it and the only thing my doctor said was to watch out for going dizzy if I stand up a bit too quick. He has also told me not to stop my meds, he will decide that for me and, even though I have gone from 140/80 to 110/60 he says I still have to have the meds. Buy a BP monitor (about £20) or get him to have regular checks in the chemist just to keep an eye on it and if it goes low he can have that discussion with his doctor. The reason I am not saying he should go talk to his doctor before starting this diet is because most doctors will look at you daft if you tell them you are going on a diet and your blood pressure will go right down. Not until they see the proof do most doctors actually listen. Can you blame them, it is a matter of hey ho they are on another diet. That’s what my doctor thought but 9 months on with all my numbers under normal range he is impressed. By the way, I am on the diet because I am diabetic but the other improvements have been a bonus I never knew would happen.

Dear Mum2many, could you please provide more information as to what medicine your husband is on?

My cousin is a cardiologist and I could ask him for his opinion.

Now, I am NOT a doctor – full disclaimer – but from what I’ve read, medicine is not really the only way to lower blood pressure. There are great alternative ways, as you can quickly verify by a simple google search. I’ll just throw in some examples.

    Websites:

    http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/high-blood-pressure/in-depth/high-blood-pressure/art-20046974

I am certain you are aware of some of these, for example, Mayo Clinic is a pretty reputable source. Commonalities in these resources are:
    A) Losing weight.
    B) Regular exercise.
    C) Dietary changes.

Obviously, you don’t NEED medicine to lower blood pressure. Obviously your husband SHOULD consult a doctor for advice specific, to his invidivual case.

    I hope this helps!

I have taken blood pressure tablets for 10 years – I made an appointment with my GP just 2 days into my diet to get his advice re this (as per the book). He said to start the diet, keep up with my tablets (which are only a low dose) and get my BP checked again in 4 weeks. IF it goes down significantly, he will reduce dosage slowly. However, he did say that some people have high blood pressure regardless of what they weigh, so losing weight is no guarantee that the hypertension will go.
Just get your hubby to get GP’s approval first – good luck!
