    Hi all,

I got weighed this morning and I’ve now lost 15lbs in 10 days! Plus I’ve lost a whole inch off my waist. I’m so pleased.

I just hope this doesn’t stop like all my other diets have. 😟 I don’t mean to be pessimistic but I’ve been trying to lose this weight for 21 years, ever since it started going on! Positive thinking needed me thinks. I WILL lose the weight. Lol.

I have to says that this new way of eating has already sorted out my appetite: instead of feeling hungry ALL the time I now feel hungry hardly at all.

    Hugs A xxx

Yesterday – day 2 of back to basics BSD
    day 1 – lost 0.4 kilos
    day 2 – Lost 0.7 kilos – 1.5lb!!!
    – and that is on individual days, so 1.1 kilos altogether 3.3lb

I have an appointment with Diabetic nurse today – it got delayed because the receptionist made the appointment with the wrong person, but this is the one where she sent me for early HbA1C test because I’d stopped taking metformin.
I think she assumed that results would shoot up again, but they went down to satisfyingly normal!

Hi Janet and Loopylou – yes, it is weighing everything that is the secret for me. It really makes sense – shame that it took 4 months to realise how bad I was at estimating the weight of food. But on the positive side the 4 months have allowed me to completely retrain my way of eating and I will never go back to my bad old ways.
Thank you Frog for mentioning how good Fatsecret is in this forum. It has been so helpful. I have saved all my favourite meals and it is so quick to plan the days eating so I don’t go over the 800.

The Diabetes nurse was slightly incredulous that I stopped taking metformin in June, but my blood sugars continued to fall and are now boringly normal!
When I saw the summarised results online a couple of weeks ago, I was bemused by the Urine albumin:creatinine ratio results. because no “normal range” was quoted, and the ratio hadn’t been calculated. I tried to do it myself, and came up with answers that didn’t make sense. I now have the answer; my results are “too normal to calculate a ratio”.

That aside, I wholeheartedly recommend getting online access to your patient records if you don’t have that already – it’s brilliant to have the history of blood test results rather than trying to recall what was said at the consultation, also you’re better prepared with questions if you’ve reviewed test results in advance.

Then we moved on to lifestyle goal setting
Target weight “a bit too ambitious?” the nurse suggested – would I like to go for 80 kilos instead?
Err – no! – if I only lose another 7 kilos in 15-16 weeks I would be very p’d off.

I’m going to do another HbA1C in December – I’ll be pleased to have confirmation that everything is still on track, although I suspect the Nurse didn’t quite believe the last ones, although she did say that she wouldn’t include cholesterol tests because my cholesterol is ‘too normal to bother about’.

As others have commented elsewhere on the forum, it is a bit scary that medical staff seem completely oblivious to new research – the nurse I saw this morning is running the diabetes clinics and had never heard of BSD. She was pleased that I was her second patient this morning who is doing well; the other one is ‘eating a proper diet, not like your one, and taking her medication’ (and still has blood sugar levels above the normal range, BTW, but does have reduced blood sugar).

    Hi Jan,

Thank you, and for helping me remember just how great the BSD800 is…nice to see the back seat busy once more🙋 hi gang…x

Scales finally showing some change after remaining static for the last 3 weeks!
0.1kg yesterday, 0.3kg today – so, moving in the right direction😊 once more.

    Start weight 118.8kg size 20-22
    Today. 97kg size 16-18

Next mini goal. 95kg…eventually I would like to reach around 75kg😕 (depending on how that affects my body / health)…will review as get closer to target weight! More interested in reaching a healthy size for ME, than an arbitrary ‘recommended’ average size or weight

More important has been the changes to blood glucose levels, cholesterol, etc…now all in normal range and am reducing medications gradually…though GP resistant to this as I have a heart condition…still think it can be achieved😊

Frog, they’ll all have heard of it in the next few years and will then feel very silly they didn’t take it seriously at first. If your nurse doesn’t go and research about the diet she must be a numpty after seeing your fantastic lab results! Now you can go on to show her that its possible to reach your ‘ambitious’ target weight!

Maiasmum, don’t worry, commit to the 8 weeks and your losses will continue, but be aware the scales will change much more slowly than in the first couple of weeks. Also they don’t always immediately reflect how well you’ve stuck to the BSD. However the losses soon add up, you will also notice how much better you feel and you will never want to go back! Well done on your fabulous start.

Imogen, good to see you loosing again too. It definitely helps me to see that others are continuing to do well even if it’s not always plain sailing. I’ve only just passed your starting weight now and hoping to be under 100kg by Christmas (more of a midi than mini goal!)

Frog – great news about your results and your weight loss. You would think your dropping blood sugars without metformin – compared with her patient on medication and the standard diabetic diet who still couldn’t get blood sugars to normal range – would have made her sit up and take notice. That’s without all the other good stuff going on with your results. It is really sad as so many people will continue to be injured by the way they are being managed by their diabetic educators.
Imogen, it’s so good that the scales are moving again and even better news that your blood sugars etc are normal.

Verano, I hope you are feeling less stressed. I have pulled myself around (see thread Feeling Really Low) and will get back on track after the weekend. In the meantime I am going to be a bit easier on myself and think of something else rather than my diet. I am in this for the long haul so gently does it.

    Hi Frog

It’s almost like fighting a losing battle!

Really well done on your results.

Why is it that if you had turned up and your blood tests were higher they would have had no hesitation in increasing your meds! Why can’t the medical profession accept that we aren’t all cretins who are only too happy to be ‘dosed up’ with whatever they deem fit?

The nurse should have been patting you on the back and saying you go for it, if you can make the bigger target well done and I’m here to help if you need me. But hey she probably thinks you can only do it with a ‘proper diet’ roll on all those carbs! LOL

Will certainly ask about access to my records best time I’m in the surgery.

Whatever you are doing its doing the trick so just keep going!

MAIASMUM Kep thinking pozzzz….you have got off to a fab start and can look forward to more of the same if you stick to the rules! Ok probably it will slow down a bit but then some people seem to have a bit of a resurgence and another quite big chunk might come off! By the end of 8 weeks i had lost 34 lbs,so on average that was four and a bit pounds a week! So much more encouraging than the old “one pound, two if youre lucky” per week losses of previous diets. Forget the past, all that matters is this time! Keep on keeping on! X

FROG well done on getting back on track so efficiently these last few days!
Its quite staggering isnt it that the P Nurses don’t seem interested in BSD..you wd think as health professionals they wd want to keep themselves updated! X

IMOGEN thats great news about yr blood test results and in going down several dress sizes! X

    Well done Frog.
I felt tickety boo yesterday and did 4 hours gardening before the rain set in. Today I am feeling a little stiff!

Yowser, can I ask why you take magnesium? I had plantar fasciitis which leads to really tight calf muscles and I have read magnesium is good for helping them release.

By the way Frog, I can’t find Longley farm cottage cheese anywhere here. I did find some by Holy Cow which is ok.

Beautiful day here. Perfect for a long dog walk. Then more visiting. Mum is out of hospital now and moved in an ambulance back to Essex do it’s only a 3 hour round trip instead of 7 hours!

Bless you for your commitment to your mum. Keep planning your meals to allow for the travel I have to go to Norfolk quite frequently in a day, so I take all my three meals with spoons forks everything, my sister thinks I’m crackers, but I don’t care, I’m in the zone, and on it. Keep up the good work. Perhaps have some arnica for your inflamed joints, safer to take than magnesium. It would be easy to take to much magnesium, although shop brought magnesium is probably so low for that reason.
Supplements are not necessary on this plan, and may even inhibit its action, magnesium has an effect on calcium for ex. and we need calcium for obvious reasons, but it also assists weight loss. So look into it carefully.

LOOPYLOU i feel for you..ive had PF and it comes back at times..ouch! …i take magnesium to help me sleep and for any other health benefits hopefully..i think it does help relieve cramps/ tight muscles. Have just read there’s plenty magnesium and other minerals in full fat unsweetened greek yoghurt..which i eat every day..and i think its my saving grace as its so creamy and comforting,it helps me stick to BSD x glad yr mum is on the mend..yr TLC no doubt has helped a lot x
Ps jan is right re magnesium, has to be right ratio to calcium..i cant remember if its twice as much calc as mag or the other way round x

    Hi Imogen

I did have a problem that a few weeks ago when I really started increasing my levels of exercise.
I really dislike taking painkillers, but I found taking a couple really did help, I think I only took them once or maybe twice – I can’t remember now whether I took asprin, paracetamol or Ibuprofen – but it worked

The other thing that was truly wondrous was when I had the problem while staying in Edinburgh, and didn’t want to spend the entire week inside the travelodge with the sound of wailing bagpipes drifting in from outside all day, I found an amazing sports massage therapist – half an hour of pure wizzardry, and it wasn’t particularly expensive!
I usually only have massage as a treat or destress/relaxation, than to address a specific problem, but she was truly amazing.
And she was based just a few doors along the road from the tea shop that had won prizes for best cakes in scotland, baker of the year…. but that’s another story.
