    Hi,
I am almost 4 weeks into the BSD with fantastic weight and inch loss results. I started it as I was 3 stone overweight and my Mum was diabetic and died early and I thought it’s about time i did something to lengthen my chances of living! I went and got my blood sugar checked at Lloyds chemist and it was 5.8 – just below pre-diabetes. So I thought I was just in time. However since then I’ve bought my own blood sugar monitor and unbelievably by blood sugar has gone UP!!! So far i’ve had readings of 5.9. 6.0 and 6.1. I know this is still not diabetic but I just cannot understand what is going on with it?!?!?! Does anyone have a clue?! I’m so disappointed as I’ve lost 17lb and 4 inches off waist so just can’t understand it!

Hi Pendiente, as you are not diabetic you needn’t worry too much about slight fluctuations in your BG. I am diabetic and did an experiment with my husband who is not. Tested our blood pre breakfast, his were higher than mine, tested again pre lunch, again his were higher then tested again post lunch to see how fast they came down, mine was quicker than his. When you start hitting 7’s and 8’s it might be time to see your doctor to get it done properly. Home testing kits, even the professional ones, can be 10 to 15% out anyway so I would suggest you stop testing, it is pointless for you.

Ok, thanks for that – it was soul destroying to see by BS go up since starting this!!

One thing that I think that you should bear in mind. Whilst your numbers at the moment are below the NICE recommended maxima, round here the medics want to see FBG below 5 or they start talking medication – which is what I am trying to avoid! Also, as you have done some checking, personally I don’t see the point of stopping – day to day the readings can and will fluctuate, but to my mind it is a good idea to keep an eye on the trend. If it continues to go up over a period of time, it may be an early warning.

Oh, and when I said day to day – poor terminology. I wasn’t suggesting that you take a reading every day – I read twice a week, Monday and Thursday, FBG, and pre- and post-prandial, which is hopefully frequent enough to catch any back-sliding!

I still dont understand why you are testing. On a day to day basis (to steal MR’s phrase) BG will go up and down depending on so many things, what you have eaten in the last 24 hours, was it carb rich, was it fibre rich, stress, so many things. The only test that would actually mean anything is if you had an HbA1c which measure glucose in the blood over a 12 week period. Just stop testing and stick with a healthy diet and keep the carbs low now that you know the damage they can do. You will prevent a future of pre-diabetes and then diabetes just by following that principle.
