“Enjoying it so far but find the evenings difficult especially watching my partner and stepdaughter still enjoying the Christmas left over goodies. Could do with some healthy snack ideas”

I think the key may be to get out of the habit of snacking – just train yourself to expect food three times a day. If you keep snacking, even healthily you never get out of the habit and once you finish the diet you will be back to snacking unhealthily (that is just my experience mind!)

Hi Lindarina! I’ve used cloud bread as a pizza base before. It’s not the same but I found it a perfectly good substitute. Just have to keep an eye on cheese quantity!

    PIZZA BASE
Cauliflower rice steamed and squeezed to remove as much water as possible
35g ish of Philadelphia type cheese
    1 Egg
    Herbs of choice

Mix to a dough. Shape into a crust- don’t go too thin or big.
Bake in medium oven. Turn over half way when top is golden and firm.
Top with tomato sauce and usual toppings. Cottage cheese works well instead of mozerella .

Just back from doctors- HBCA1 (??) in normal range. Fasting bloods 6.6 so higher than normal. “Insulin resistance ” as opposed to Prediabetic. Cholesterol higher than normal.
Feel like I’ve dodged a bullet- wake up call for certain. She was happy for me to try the VLCD and we agreed we would redo fasting bloods at the end of 8 weeks and the cholesterol in the spring-it needs 3 months for changes to take effect.
So I’m on to day 4. Not weighing or measuring until day 7. Feeling motivated but amazed at how many carbs are in things!!! To me CARBS were pasta, rice, potato. How dare they be in peppers!!! Or onion!!! Quite a challenge staying under 50g and notice a lot of the recipes in the book take you over that with 1 portion. But hooray for cheese!!! Despite all this, it’s not a choice! I’m doing this. All the way. Have a brilliant day everyone x

Can I ask a rather daft question?
what is the proportion of fat/carbs/protein within the 800 calories ….say we have 50 gms of carbs how much fat and protein makes up the rest ?
I’m trying to meal plan for my husband who works overseas and it’s proving difficult!
He dislikes eggs , pulses , cabbage, , celery and cauliflower, loves carrots, spinach ,cucumber avacados, fruits, tomatoes, onions, mushrooms , meat ,poultry and fish ….his staple diet whilst living in the West Indies ( due to easy prep and limited time and poor supermarket choice) is starches ….I’m wondering whether he should modify and do the 5:2 or even a 4:3 ?
It’s nigh on impossible to create a varied diet that satiates him ……it would appear that I need to increase the protein ratio to ensure he’s not hungry but bulk the meal up with the carbs he likes?
    Help!!!!!

    Hi Lexy4france

I struggled with this one too as I hadn’t really been aware of the under 50g carbs thing when I decided to do this. I was thinking mainly about avoiding pasta, rice, potatoes etc. I Googled lots of sites but it is really confusing. On My Fitness Pal free version, it uses percentages rather than grams when it tells you your fat/protein/carbs breakdown. I stumbled on an article ( don’t know where) that gave you the gram amount for a certain percentage of carbs. I fiddled with number s- rightly or wrongly – and came up with the following ( which I logged in MFP as my calories and macro goals) 800 calories, 50g carbs is 25%, protein is 70g and 35% and fat is 36g and 40%. I wasn’t sure if I should give Protein or Fat the bigger percentage but I had read that too much protein can be the cause of you getting the smelly ‘Ketosis/ Atkins Diet’ breath so for now, fat gets the slightly higher per cent. If my weight loss is rubbish or slows, I will swap it over and hope I don’t start to smell!
His food favourites suggest things like Mexican and Italian to me. I’m a vegetarian . So peppers, onions, tomatoes, mushrooms and spinach with lots of spices, some meat – served in lettuce leaf ‘wraps’ I like to add some cottage cheese at the bottom too. There is a nice ‘Carb Free ‘ Ploughmans in the recipe book – just walnuts, ham, cheese, apple and bit of pickle. Does he like olives? I’ve had a small handful today with a match box size piece of cheese and an apple. Packs of ham, tins of tuna, punnet of tomatoes or eating a pepper like an apple are all quick and grab and go. I’ve seen people use sliced meat as wraps for sandwiches – so cheese and tomato in a ham roll up, or avocado and chilli?
I guess in order to be most effective, the diet has to be manageable, so if 5;2 or 4;3 is easier to stick to and less likely he will fall off the wagon then it might be a better choice. This is about a new way of eating/ life so each person needs to integrate that in their own way. I wish you both lots of luck x

Thanks also for the breakdown in percentages very handy!
I abandoned the Atkins very early on due to Ketosis stinking breath!!!!!

Meant to say TumTumP……well done on getting your HbA1c to the normal range………these results reflect how well your diabetes is being controlled as it reveals blood glucose levels over a period of approx 8- 12 weeks rather than one off snapshot of a fasting test or the daily peaks and troughs of blood glucose so you’re getting better control of your sugars overall …..it’s a better indicator and is fab for you . Undoubtedly your cholesterol and FBS should be within normal ranges when you next get tested well done on your journey xxxxxx.

Lindarina we have homemade sourdough pizza night at ours every Friday too and no plans to stop as quite social and part of our lifestyle. I have done it right through BSD. I fast on the day till dinner though as was doing 5:2 before BSD and find it easy. I still count cals and try and stick to 800 (not always able to) but needless to say the carbs are always way high. Another option is simply eat the topping and don’t eat the base. I figure one day a week is fine and I have continued to lose weight and inches.

    Hi everyone,

    Nice to e-meet you.
I am a newbie too, a very experienced dieter again at my maximum weight. I should not really have gained this last 20 pounds, I do not know where it came from, so shedding it at the generally recommended pound-a-week speed really got me down.

I have started the diet last Wednesday, and already 3 kg (6 pounds) are gone, even though I am only on day 4. Incredible and inspiring!
As a veteran dieter, I know the first week is often spectacular, but I have never before experienced something like this.

Everybody I wish you the best of success on this journey.

    Morning all
Today is the first day of the rest of my life! This time I am going to do it. Like a lot of you I have tried to shift the weight so many times before and failed. I have faith in MM and am inspired by all of you. So many helpful tips and hints. I was told by my previous GP (I have moved house since) that I am pre diabetic with a reading of 5.6……………… I suspect it was more to do with the fact that I am morbidly obese. I am too ashamed to write my weight on here, but have half of it to lose. I am especially encouraged by Mixnmatch and Captainlynne – thank you. I only hope I can find the willpower and determination to follow in your footsteps.

I am looking forward to being able to do anything without becoming breathless, for the pain in my knees and upper arms to go away and to walk more. I have acquired an exercise bike so have started building up the HIT exercise and when I have shed some weight, might be brave enough to get out on my real, but ancient mountain bike (owned some 15 years and ridden three times). I intend to weigh once a week. Any journey starts with the first step. Here goes. Thank you all and the very best of luck with your own adventures.

Hi all the newbies and all the ‘oldies’ – I’ve not posted for ages, but I’ve always been here, keeping up with all your ups and downs, it mostly keeps me on track! I have been on maintenance for about the past 3 weeks – even though I’ve still got about 100 lbs to go !!! My eating and drinking has been a little out of control, a good day followed by a day of uncontrolled gluttony, but my head has got back to where I want to be, so I hope now to be back on track and start losing again.
I’m posting to make myself accountable. Almost at 2 stone lost since the beginning of starting in October, I know how well this works when you stick with it. SO, no more messing about, no more ‘days off’ !! For my healths sake, just get on with it, eat well, drink water, walk!!!! ( Sorry, this is a shout at myself!)
Thanks everyone for all the tips, recipes etc and especially for the person who recommended the rose hip oil, I can’t remember who it was now, but I got some and it’s fab! Also the white onion and mustard soup recipe, finally got round to making it, very tasty!
Best wishes to all, and a very Happy, healthy new year – Andi xx

I’m going to experiment with a buckwheat and spelt pizza crust. I had some spelt bread recently that was a great texture so I think it might be doable. I am still staying away from wheat as much as I can as I have discovered it is the main cause of my cravings. I can happily live without rice and potatoes except in tiny quantities, and when I have those tiny quantities they don’t make me want more. Bread and pasta is far less dangerous if I steer clear of the wheat varieties.

Hello, I started on Jan 2nd and am feeling good on the diet. I find it easy to stick to. I bought lots of veg and salads and fresh meat, salmon and eggs and check the cal and carb content. I lost 9 lbs in the first 5 days but much to my dismay my waist measurement has increased by a bit each day – now 3 inches more since I started. I started the diet specifically to reduce my waistline. I used to have 10 inches between bust and waist whatever my weight. The difference as of today is only 2 inches!! Anyone else had this?

(I couldn’t work out how to start a new topic on this, sorry).

Well I am a long term dieter have been on every diet under the sun since I was 16 and am now 62 and I can assure everyone this one works. I feel full and can have a small glass of red wine every night if I want. The recipes are excellent, except for the muffins which are foul and a disaster, so dont bother. My husband and I started the diet on 27 December, I lost 2 kilos and he lost 3 in our first week. In our second week my daughter, who is 20, and not on a diet joined us, I add potato, pasta, rice or bread to her meals and she thoroughly enjoys them. The food is a little expensive for us that live in Western Australia as most things have to be shipped in and locally grown produce is expensive, but what price do you put on your health. I would recommend planning the weekly menu a week in advance and having some hard boiled eggs handy incase you get hungry, as I did after the green tea and blueberry shake. Also dont forget to get in your 10,000 steps a day, I have a border collie so I walk, walk everywhere. Good luck to everyone and will keep you posted to how much, if any weight I loose next week.

    Hi all,
I started on the 6th Jan and have just spent a couple of hours reading this entire thread. I can’t recall who wrote it, but I also put on weight before starting a new diet, and I’ve done it again, putting on 3.5kg (7lb) since Christmas Day! I have 64kg (142lb) to lose. I love food and wine and eat way too much. I’m looking at this as a lifestyle change because if I view it as a diet, then I’ll do what I’ve always done and put it all back on again when I fall back into my old habits when I stop the diet.
Saw this quote on the internet…”I’m not losing weight. I’M GETTING RID OF IT. I have no intention of finding it again.”
I use the ‘EasyDietDiary’ app and find it quite intuitive. Day 3 for me today and I have a migraine which I am guessing is down to carb and/or sugar withdrawal. I have set myself a goal of drinking 1litre of water before lunch and another litre before dinner which has worked so far, but then it has been over 30 the last 2 days in Melbourne!
Good luck everyone and thanks for the inspiring and helpful posts.

It is amazing the boost you get when you are part of a group of like minded individuals. This thread does appear to be very popular and even though I have not read every post there is generally a healthy thread of very encouraging ones.
I have found the last week relatively easy to get through with minimal cravings and not many sugar withdrawal symptoms. Admittedly I am relying on coffee to keep me distracted. I know not everyone has it easy in the beginning so I do feel fortunate.
Had my first post start weight in this morning and lost a tad over 3kg in the last six days (started Monday) so quite happy with that. Most of it was water I am sure so managing my expectations for the weeks to come. My wish is to have a loss of 1.5 kg a week which I believe is feasible.
Good wishes to all you fellow losers (really winners) and a big virtual thumbs up. Let’s make this happen.

I started on Jan 1st with my wife
I’ve eaten more soup than her and she eats meat and I don’t

    Started at 93.1kg and I have lost 4.1kg : 9lb

My wife had lost 2.5kg and she’s delighted

I had a blow out last night but managed to keep
    it to 2000 calories

Felt great at weigh in this morning and stuck to 800 cals today and as i am back to work tomorrow after a Xmas 3 week break I know I am better placed to stick with the plan

I’m 5 ft 11 so to lose 4.1kg in a week is pretty something. A lot of water I’m sure which I can’t lose next week but even if I only lose 1.5kg next week I’m well on track for losing the 16kg in 8 weeks

More salad, more soup, more veg, more Fish, 2 egg omelette with the works and my fav Oats Cocao powder blueberries and plain yoghurt

The worst days were 4 and 5
On day 8 I feel fine as does my wife

Here’s to next Sunday’s weigh in

I casually started on Wednesday. I avoided sugar and starchy carbs whilst I read the book. My shop arrived Friday, and I attempted a soup from the book which was really good. i have done atkins twice before, so am not unfamiliar with low carb eating. I’m hoping this will be easier as I can eat more veg and fruit and suspect having less animal protein/more pulses will keep my cholesterol from peaking. I have retained the use of almond milk over cows milk as I now prefer the taste. It’s also low in carbs. I’ve also been using slim noodles (0 carbs and 20 calories) and almond muffins. I’m hoping that I will be able to make more meals from the recipe book next week and feel I have enough energy to add some excercise.

I’m having a similar pattern as you, a great day or two and the scales going in the right direction then the next day I seem to lose my head completely and eat every carb in sight!! Fortunately my husband is back to work tomorrow so that might help me ditch the holiday mentality and make me focus! Will start with a batch of broccoli and cheddar soup and some zucchini fritters do I have no excuse to raid the white bread!!
Wishing you a very successful week and I look forward to hearing how you are going.

This is my second 8 week stint having lost 11kg last autumn and I’m happy to be back in control…usually…but today has been really painful, I’ve been absolutely consumed by the desire to eat any and everything. I’m feeling a little better just now having lunched but may have to go out so I don’t consume the contents of the fridge.

For dinner last night I had white fish with some lentil dahl. If i eat carbs it’s normally at lunchtime so I wonder if the timing derailed me. Anyway I won’t be having my lentils in the evening again…i have them once a week because of the benefits they bring.

    Have a great Sunday afternoon.

    Hello All

So many inspiring and motivating posts! I’m trying to keep up with them all but probably wont post often myself as I’m not good at this sort of thing and always seem short of time.

I started on Tuesday and nearly 4lbs off when I weighed in today, which I am delighted with.

I’ve been using ‘my fat secret’ to record food and exercise and although I have tried to plan, im not finding it easy to stick below 800 cals or 60g carbs. I need to look at my menus and see where I can shave off a few cals and carbs. The food I’m eating is healthy but we tend to eat the higher carb veg like peppers, onions etc. I probably need to go with more of the green stuff and of course cauli. Im not veggie but try not to have meat too often sticking mainly to chicken and fish. Eggs feature heavily at breakfast!
I’m thinking as I get more into the bsd mode, I might skip breakfast if I don’t feel hungry. That should help to keep within the cal/carb targets.

I’m so happy to have found this forum – I’m feeling very optimistic that I can avoid diabetes by eating this way – thanks all – keep up the good work x

    Hi Sue 🙂

I started the diet on Sat 31st December. but I since had problems where I had to stop (4th Jan) . I then decided to stick to foods I knew were around the 1000 calorie mark. I keep an eye on my carbs and stopped drinking so much water. I actually went back to my usual drinking habits with coke Zero and a few glass of water a day. At this point I was 15.10.

Kept up cooking and eating from the book, I am addicted to Chicken Satay but we have it with Cauliflower Rice (homemade) and I just weighed myself and I am now 15.5 so I have lost 5 pounds in a week. I sit at a desk for 8 hours a day so I am not really active, but it’s still working.

My wife is not diabetic but she is doing this for weight loss. Believe it or not she’s lost 8 pounds since the 31st of December.

I am diabetic and my fasting levels this morning was 5.8 which I am well chuffed about (not getting the dawn effect anymore, even when not eating anything before bed)

We eat chicken and fish, I do my best to stick to veg grown above the ground, but yesterday for lunch I had some Salmon and peas in a bowl and it was delish!. We also have for many years ate broccoli and cauliflower with meals. Frozen which I always find cheaper and better ( got to love Iceland!)

As for the breakfast, my dad has had 2 eggs every morning for most of his life, she swears by them. We have 2 as well, straight out the shell and eaten whole, it fills me up no problems until lunch.

SO stick with it – it’s worth it, I have only been at it a week (4 days officially calorie counting etc) and I am doing great.

One problem I seem to have is that every 2 days I miss my daily metformin, which means that every other day I have really bad diarrhea which is bound to be helping with the weight loss lol.

Your post to Sue was really informative…..my hubby is struggling he’s 6-3 and overweight ( needs to lose 3.5 stones) he’s working overseas and by himself so hasn’t me there to plan, shop and cook…..he’s got the book and recipes and I think he’ll have to adapt ……having small quantities of potato and rice occasionally……his palate is certainly changing as he loves spicy cauli rice which previously he wouldn’t even look at !!!!!
I’ve given him lots of recipes from Diet Doctor which are really good ( low carb, gluten free and low cal) and he’s going to try and make the bread , which is Physillum husk flour.
It’s great your FBS is down to within normal limits……….have you much weight to lose? And how fab that your wife has lost 8lbs …….
Have you any tips on recipes you like? Hubby only likes eggs disguised ( ha ha!!!) hates celery, cabbage, kale, Aubergine ….loves peas, carrots, onions, tomatoes, potatoes, bread ,rice and pasta ……so it’s going to be hard especially where he is ( a small island in the Caribbean) …….thanks and well done again x

I’m just about to eat but I will write some more to you later 🙂

Hello fellow January starters, hope you’re finding your feet with the BSD.

Having been a skimmed milk devotee for decades, I was hesitant about switching to fuller fat. So, went half way and moved on to semi-skimmed a couple of days back in a macchiato. I’m amazed how much fuller I feel and it certainly keeps me going longer between meals.

Really enjoying this eating plan and I’m bulking up on larger recipes for days when time is shorter and I need a quick turnaround. Much to my surprise, I’m not missing carbs (or booze) as much as I expected. My energy levels are more consistent already and I dropped 7lbs in week 1 (with a 3 stone target). It also ties in nicely with a dry January.

Taking time to plan (when you’re not hungry) is really important. The only fly in the ointment was going out for dinner last night. No problem not having wine, but I had read the menu before and made my choices. Only to find they’d run out of both (and much more). Settled for a chicken breast, slaw – and a Diet Coke as a treat.

    Have a good week everyone.

    Hi Granny,
Rose hip oil is really great for your skin, a few posters were worried about skin on their face forming some lines after they lost weight and I suggested the oil. You can find it at chemists and even supermarkets, if you use it at night it’s really nourishing. Actually you could use it all over if you mix it in with some moisturiser..!

    Good evening/morning one and all

Well done on all the losses reported on here. 👍

End of day 2 for me.

Food choices going well but I have had such a nagging headache all day.

Anyone else had that but now feel brighter?

    Hi everyone,
I started the BSD on the 01/01/17, decided to take the bull by the horns. I spoke to my doctor who knew of the diet and she agreed it was ideal for me, however suggested I increased the calories slightly as I had also joined the Gym. I made the choice to add in one extra meal / snack to take it up to the 1,000 and this has worked well this week. Shopping cost has increased but with a first week loss of 11 lb I am more than happy and motivated to start week 2. Amazingly no headaches or withdrawal, plenty of fluids and trying things I have not had before.

Good look to everyone starting in January

    Hi Way of Life
I also have just reached the end of day 2.
I did have a flash headache today and thought the worst, but gulped down some of my 3 litres of water followed by a coffee and it went away, thankfully.
Hope your headache has departed now.
Hope all the water had filtered through now and will not have me up all night!
Roll on with day 3 – good luck with it.
    Kate
