Ebs here, oh! dear, good start to the evening with braised cod, lettuce and peas, however sitting on my own at 7 pm watching the TV and thought about that packet of dark chocolate maltesers hiding under the tee shirts on the top shelf in the wardrobe left over from Christmas. Well the temptation was too much 25 of those delicious crunchy little balls later and 250 calories, I felt sick, ugh! sugar overload. Beat myself up called myself all the names under the sun for failing to resist the temptation and gave the rest of the family packet to my daughter. Back on the diet this morning with a visit to the local store to buy some soup, without added sugar and low carb.

Good morning fellow January starters. Just weighed myself at the end of week 3 and I’m 3lbs down, making a total of 13lbs.

I didn’t feel any different in myself this week and thought I wouldn’t loose much, if anything, despite sticking to the recipes like glue. But feeling quite chuffed with that.

Always really encouraged to read everyone’s posts, thank you. To those who are struggling or hitting a plateau, keep focused, keep going.

    Hi
6 days in, 5 lbs down and feeling fine! Blood sugars best they’ve been for a while, even though I was on LCHF.

Just made the Beetroot Falafels for lunch. What a faff! Thank goodness the results were worthwhile. Even beetrootophobe husband liked them. It was he who suggested having a go, since he’s joining me on this journey. Next time I’ll make twice the amount and freeze half the end product.

Good to keep abreast of people’s progress on here. Keep on posting!

    Afternoon all,

Great to see some of your phenomenal results, I salute your dedication! Well-deserved.

I rather fell off the wagon about 10 days ago – major work dramas, multiple birthdays and stressful visit to A&E. Excuses, excuses. Have tried to stay low carb every other day but there’ve been many bad things. So slightly shocked to step on the scales this morning and find I’m 2lb down in the last 11 days. I will happily take that though! Back on plan from tomorrow.

It’s picking yourself up and carrying on after these mis-steps that seems to have made a difference to many posters on here. Knowing that if you do just pick yourself up, dust yourself down and get on with it, you CAN keep seeing results.

Morning all from a hot tennis bound Melbourne

    Weigh in after 21 days

    Start 93.1lkg – 14st 9lbs

    Now : 86.5kg – 13st 8.5lbs

    Loss 6.6kg – 1st 1/2 lb

Waist round belly button start : 110cm

    Now: 101cm

    Loss 9cm : 4 inches

I haven’t stuck to it every day

    More like 800x 4 , 900 x 1 , 975 x 1 and 1150 X1

I also have a blow out planned for Australia Day and had one 2 weeks ago so just the smallest window of flexibility but a rareity.

800 is 800 and that’s always my intention

My wife has lost 5.1kg down to 85.2kg and she’s pleased and had a new outfit on for the Tennis yesterday

I’ve had 2 genuine full on weight loss comments

My advice : Remind yourself why you need to lose the weight regularly . Treat all days as the first day and the only day.
Eat a lot of sugar free chewing gum – saves me many times
Glasses and glasses of fuzzy water with lime lemon
Soup as a dinner works so well for me and on average 75 calories

Stick with it and if you’ve recently fell off the wagon then dust down refocus and go again

    Good luck

*getyourcarbon* whoop whoop! Excellent progress and a lovely update to read. I allowed myself wine last night. But as was at friends then got persuaded to have chilli (without the rice) So the calories saved for wine meant I went over by approx 350 cals. And then today consequently I have felt like bingeing on carbs all day. I haven’t, but decided to not calorie count and just stick to low carb. Back on it strictly tomorrow, but I suspect this may well be my regular pattern….5 days 800, 2 days approx 1200, it has to work for me, so this seems doable. I will hate not seeing the scales move, but with any luck by Wednesday they will again be going 👇.

Up early for a walk in the morning.

    Happy weekend all x

    Hi everyone,
So great to hear of people’s successes but I’m also finding the “oops” moments comforting. I started Jan 16th so not quite a week and weighed myself this morning (I was trying to wait a week but couldn’t quite make it!). Amazed that I have lost 3.7kgs! Only found the first two days really hard, grumpy, tired, weak, but now feel much better. Had scrambled eggs with a bit of shredded cheese for brunch and it seemed like a lot of food!
My only concerns are some muscle pain in my legs and shoulders and, instead of constipation, I have had the reverse every day. Not sure what that is about as I’m not sick. Muscle pain might be magnesium (which I will start supplementing today) or sodium perhaps? Any advice gratefully accepted!
I will not post much but I read every day and I’m so glad to have the support of this wonderful community. Congratulations to us all!

    Hi Chrissie63
I had the muscle pain in my legs for the first week. Just another symptom of the carb flu I’m afraid, it will pass.
I’ve more recently started getting cramps in my legs but that is due to my lower salt intake as I no longer eat any processed foods. Now that I’m adding more salt to my food and taking magnesium tablets, that’s getting better.
I’ve been on maintenance since September after losing 32kg and now float between 56-58kg by simply upping my fat and still going virtually carbless and sugarless.
    Any questions, just ask.
    Cheers

Thanks LindaA for the reassurance. I guess I have not really been in touch with my body for years (history of child sexual abuse and violence so it didn’t seem safe to be aware of my body) so having it ‘talk’ to me now feels a bit scary. Congrats on your great loss and on maintaining it. Don’t think I will ever be 58kgs but losing 30kgs would be a great start!

    Hi All
Week 3 for me and continuing the downward trend which I’m very pleased about.

I can’t believe I’m still losing, as with WW and SW the losses would definitely have tailed off by this stage, I really think I just can’t eat carbs and lose weight – obviously it must also be related to the lower calorie intake too as when I tried LCHF previously I got a bit blase and added so much fat I ended up gaining weight.

I’m super impressed by all the success stories being shared here, Daisiesmum, CaptainLynne, Sunshinegirl, Getyourcarbon, Verano, JulesM to name but a few – you really are helping me so much! I feel a bit guilty ‘lurking’ as I tend to read the posts late evening on my email and then don’t post much myself – I have replies on my head but don’t get round to signing in and posting them. I think my mini goal this week should be to come out of the shadows and join in!!

    Thank you all!

Ebs, sounds like you need some salt in your diet. Although hidden salt is not good for you because there is loads of it, if you are not using salt and you are drinking lots of water you will be depleting your salts which the body needs to regulate various things. Have a little real salt on an egg or tomatoes and see how that helps.

    Hello everyone

Have been following the posts avidly since I joined last week. Had my week two weigh in this morning and am happy to report a 4lb loss this week. I have lost 8.5lbs in two weeks which for me is a phenomenal weight loss. I have been careful to keep a check on the carbs and have only had one apple all week- I craved apple yesterday so had it with some yoghurt and pecans for my evening meal! I am finding it a challenge coming up with new ideas but have bought the receipt book and a low carb cook book I saw in a charity shop so I will spend today looking for some variety. Thank you to everyone who contributes to this forum- it is so helpful to read the tips and advice. I still worry that I haven got to grips with the diet but from what I understand it’s about keeping to 800 calories and keeping the carb count down. My husband can’t believe that I am eating all “the wrong things”. This morning I ate a mushroom and cheese omelette for my brunch. Am making the skinny lasagne for my evening meal – it’s delicious. I have been thinking of “jelly tots” this week so I am going to treat myself to a bar of 90% chocolate so that I can enjoy a piece with my coffee as a treat! Have a good week everyone in the January Club.

    Hi Ebs
In sympathy with you with the leg cramps. I’m on last day of week 2 and have been wakened with them through the night, on and off since starting the diet. Really painful and difficult to tell yourself in this case it’s the weight falling off!! I have found though that the days I add a tiny bit of salt to cooked veg or eggs, I tend not to be so bad at night. I would definitely try the salt and don’t be tempted to stint on the water. I seem to remember this happening to me the last time I was on the diet and the cramps did wear off in time.
    Good luck x

Hello everyone I’m only on day two, but thanks everyone for your inspiration and ideas. One thing I learned very quickly, I don’t like plain tap water much so always take a big glass of Robinsons black currant low sugar to bed for sipping during the night. I have now replaced this with cold fruit tea in a berry flavour.

One poster mentioned apples ? I must have missed something as I thought it was ok to eat apples ?

I went out for lunch with my family yesterday for my birthday and there was a halloumi cheese salad on the menu which I was able to have. I was worried about the eating out aspect, I imagine you have to ask for restaurants to leave the carbs off the plate if there is nothing on the menu. I blew out the candles on my cake, but did not eat any. My family said a little piece could not hurt, so I have explained I must stick to this properly all the time for 8 weeks.

Giving up alcohol will be a toughie for me as I love my glass of wine, but it will be an essential part of my plan.

I’m aiming to lose 70lbs, so the 8 weeks is just a start to a long term change of eating habits. I have MS so can’t exercise as much as I would like, this may mean a slower loss, but we will see how we go.

Hi Seasidenana, there is nothing wrong with apples in terms of calories (72) but they do contain around 20g of carbs per apple so if you are restricting carbs to, say, 50 that is nearly half your daily allowance, same with pears. I tend to have one per week in a ploughman’s lunch. Good luck.

    Greetings fellow BSDers,

Time for my weekly report on my progress, so after my third week:
Loss for the week – 1kg (had a tad loss of will power yesterday and ate too much milk chocolate)
    Loss since beginning – 7.3kg

As my target for the month was 6kg loss, I can say I have already hit my goal and hopefully in this last week will surpass it even further, which will be a great victory. I am still enjoying the supper recipes but for breakfast resorted to switching between greek yoghurt and creamy scrambled eggs. Lunch is usually a salad or leftovers from previous night. Still adamant to carry on as I have a lot of fat to drop.

Thanks everybody for your great posts, the ones I get the chance to read are generally very encouraging and it is great to see everyone doing so well.

    Be good and persevere

Hi Ebs, I have had awful leg cramps in the past. A daily magnesium supplement tablet helped with that, I haven’t had one for years now (even though I no longer take magnesium).
Worth a try if the extra salt doesn’t help 🙂
There are also natural sources of magnesium – from memory Brazil nuts, leafy greens.

Try a magnesium tablet before bed. I have restless legs and find it’s a life saver! If you have too much it’ll act like a purge, so if i have to swap brands (household economies etc..) i increase the tabs til i’m on the toilet and then take a little less than that. Each company seems to have a different formula so it’s helpful to know how to gauge how much to take. Hope it improves!

Starting week three. Floating around 5 kg down. Head fog pre bsd has well and truly lifted. Have heaps more energy. Get a bit hungry, but now i have started using the myfitness pal i can see that some days i have cut it down a bit too much, so need to watch that. I am drinking a slim tea (i’m not a tea drinker but this one is palatable, even without honey) and heaps of water, mostly still but occasionally bubbled. Had a glass of wine the other day with friends, cos life wont stop, hahahaha!! Have noticed changes in my shape and a good friend who hadn’t seen me for a while was very complimentary as to how i was looking. This is not why i’m doing it, but hey, i wont turn down a compliment!! I’ve dropped from 81.2 kg to 76.1, and that’s without bumping up the exercise. kids are back at school next week so i’ll either be back at work (easy 10-15000 steps a shift) or i’ll have time to hit the pavement. I’m still blown away at how such a relatively small weight loss can totally change your perception and outlook. Aiming for 72 and will be happy with 75. Just feeling better is worth it.
One issue i am having to work around is i am dairy free, which has helped my meneires no end, but means i have to work around it in recipes. Makes it tricky if i am eating out, but it’s workable. Just hand me the sparkling water!!

What ingredients are in the pappadums? Is is chick pea or gram flour? I’m pretty sure they are high in carbs, so be careful.
Very hot in Sydney today, so did my walk early, 21,000 + steps out of the way and now jumping in and out of and reading by the pool😀. For those of you in the U.K, sorry, you’ve got the cold to deal with🇦🇺.

Just googled urid flour, it’s a type of flour, native to India, which is made by grinding black gram pulses or lentils into a fine powder. 3 of those cases would be pretty light, so all good there, but you wouldn’t want to eat a huge amount.
Amazing what you learn doing this way of eating!

Starting week 3 and now down just over 3kg. Really pleased as I am now beginning to feel the benefits! I was starting to think that all my aches and pains were just part of having turned 50 but miraculously they seem to be disappearing..! More energy, better concentration, more positive, less grumpy (my kids have told me!) So this is not just about weight loss, even for those of us who are not diabetic, the health benefits are clear.

It s making me think about the ‘treats’ I give my kids. I know they burn off the sugar faster than I do but it’s habit building isn’t it? The meals I give them are always home made from scratch and always use fresh ingredients, nothing canned or ready made- apart from the occasional pizza on family ‘Movie Night’ but their snacks are highly sugary and carb laden. As well as continuing in my own new found way of eating and upping my steps this week, I need to look at substituting their snacks with more healthy options (this will be tricky as they are already used to sugary ones). Any suggestions would be very welcome for child friendly low sugar (my boys refuse to eat fruit) snacks. Thankyou : )

So good seeing everyone’s hard work paying off – go Team January!!

Juliet well done on your 6kg loss at the start of week 3. Very encouraging as I’m only on the start of day 3!

I’m keeping a daily diary just for myself to record how I feel about the changes, and noting any temptations or low points. This is so I can prevent them as far as I can.

I already know that coming home after one of my very long work days is a weak time, so plenty of meals ready made and frozen in advance will help.

I’m looking for solutions to packed lunch as my job involves travelling around and sometimes no proper breaks. When I’m office based my home made soups will be fine. On the travelling days it will have to be salad or cold leftovers in a cool bag. Anyone any packed lunch tips ?

Also any tips for eating out ? I am single so tend to meet friends after work once or twice a week in pub type venues.

    Hi everyone,
Day 1 Week 3 for me. Down 1lb. Doesn’t look much but Ok for me Had lost 2lbs the week before my official start date just by cutting down on carbs to avoid the ‘carb flu’ I did have too many nutty snacks and 2 bananas this week. This week’s goals- Stop the snacks. I am old enough to remember the days when it was nothing between meals until snack food companies made us believe we need snacks to keep going. Mostly chocs.. Of course if one is on meds it might be different but it’s what works for me.
It’s my birthday this week so I’m aiming to be a new woman by the next one. Crochet and knitting keep me busy in the evenings and I’m thinking of a bit of decluttering for the afternoons.
First thing in the day I usually read these posts for inspiration. I weigh weekly only. I know from past experience my weight goes up and down.
Good luck to everyone for all the inspiring posts. It keeps us all going.

Definitely agree – good idea to keep hands (and head) busy. I am an emotional eater and have turned to carbs all my life as an emotional support. Currently throwing myself into projects that need lots of thought and planning to keep my mind from the stresses which then lead me to eat the wrong things. So far, so good! . I’m fasting from 7pm ish until 12 noon the next day every day, so hoping that will help too. Anyone know if this makes a difference or should I just eat breakfast at the usual time?

Well done, Granny, it sounds as if we are making very similar progress. I had been having 2 apples each day as my ‘fall back’ as I read somewhere they were ok, but having discovered they have 20g carb each I have cut them out completely! So between upping my steps to 10,000 and cutting out the apples, I’m hoping for another loss this week. Even 2 lbs I’ll be quite happy with. I look forward to hearing how you’re getting on : )

Morning all, great progress everyone. Beginning of Week 3 for me, and no different to Friday for me, so 11 lb’s or 5kg loss in the first 2 weeks with no shifting over the weekend, but I have started to add into MFP what I actually ate and can see I probably did about 1500 cals each day, so not surprising. Back to strict 800 each weekday for me.

halloumi is great if you need to add salt, but be warned, don’t cook the whole packet like I did yesterday …Doh!!

also can’t seem to get through a weekend without wine and a couple of mini bars of green and blacks, but a lot less than normal, a bottle on Friday night and just one glass yesterday.

Juliet, apples have always been my downfall. I don’t stop at one but can munch my way through 2 or 3 or even 4 especially if I’m reading or watching tv. So I haven’t bought any lately until I can find a way of stopping at 1. Too high in carbs as well for the moment.
Granny the needles and hooks are working overtime. Going to bed dreaming of the next project. Better than food. Lasts for much longer too.
Don’t know about everyone else in UK, but shops here haven’t any courgettes. Thought the town was full of BSDiers and they’d bought them all until I saw a notice saying there’d been flooding in Spain so none for the time being. I use them in ratatouille .

Hi everyone! Congratulations on your progress so far and thanks for all the tips. You’ve saved me some trouble along the way!

    Week Three check in:
Have lost 23.8 # (1.7 stone) and two inches around my waist. Down a pant size and this one is feeling baggy. Feeling good energy during the day. My body wants to move.

    Concerns:
-I’m worried I’m not getting enough iron. Starting to feel fatigued at night. Going to start taking supplements for that.
    -On days I exercise a lot (10,000 steps + yoga + swimming), I don’t feel that I’m getting enough, so I’m eating more (1,000 – 1200 calories). Hopefully that’s ok!
    – General doubts about this seeming to good to be true. I have read the literature and I believe it, but it just flies in the face of everything I’ve been taught for so long. It seems so easy for the results I’m getting. I feel skeptical sometimes.

Week 3 finishes today which is amazing -going so fast and still enjoying it. Not hungry either.ive had a chest infection this week and haven’t had much appetite-all I wanted was some white toast!! But I’ve not given in, was surprised to have a carb craving though. As always nervous to weigh and measure tomorrow. Hit a plateau last week and worried if it carries on I’ll lose motivation. I can’t afford to do that-insulin resistant so I have to do it. I haven’t noticed much difference physically- smaller around my ribs but the rest seems unchanged. On and up.

    Hi bmmorag
Well done for starting-that’s the hardest part. Your meals sound great. Lots of people, myself included, try to stay below 50g CARBS. I use My FitnessPal ( MFP) to track them. Because of that I avoid things like porridge. Yummy and nutritious but high carbs. Please don’t let that put you off-not everyone sticks to under 50g carbs and they have great results too. The book doesn’t mention thisand is based on the low carb, Med diet. Measure your waist ( and other bits if you fancy it) so that you can see all progress not just weight loss. Try to find some things you like to eat that can grab and go and are quick. This will help if you haven’t had time to plan-although planning your meals and shopping sensibly will be the most helpful thing you can do. I always have lots of cherry tomato packs and sugar snap peas in fridge to grab, I measure out 4-5 bits of cheese that weigh 25g so I can grab in a hurry. No drain tuna and olives, almondsand miso soup sachets are my handbag stand by. Are you vegetarian? Quorn is great-the sliced meat very filling, low calorie and can hold a filling like a wrap. Make sure to reward yourself in a non food way when you can-you are amazing and on the way to better health. Good luck x

Mum and TumtumP, Wow! Thank you so much for the encouragement! Mum, when I started, day 4&5 were the worst for me. I totally get that! People here encouraged me and someone gave me the tip to make sure I get enough salt and fat. That really helped me get through it. I still eat more fat than carbs or protein every day. It really helps.

TumtumP, I have a lot to lose. I’m 6’0 and in mid-Dec weighed 19.2 stone (269#) with a BMI of 35, belly measured 49″. That’s when I realized that I need to make some drastic changes and found out about this diet.

Tips, hmmm. I tell myself constantly that I am doing an amazing job. Especially on days when I go over, I try to dwell on how nutritiously I’m eating and how well I’m treating my body.

I really don’t want to lose the muscle I’ve earned by hauling around an extra 100# every day so I’m trying to increase my exercise levels to compensate. My husband is losing about half as fast as me but he doesn’t exercise. He faithfully hits 800 calories per day but only gets 1-2,000 steps. (I do 10K+ steps.) So I think that’s a big factor. He has less to lose though!

I have been absolutely firm to sticking with the diet. (I’m with you on that!) I go up and down on calories but nary a piece of bread or pasta has passed my lips. 😀 I occasionally have a corn or low carb tortilla along with fats & protein. I REALLY want to get over my insulin / blood sugar problems so I am committed to it. I’m definitely looking forward to getting to a place when I can add those things back in though!

Good luck with your weigh in tomorrow!

    Hi Lizv

I’m 5ft10, started at 17st8 with a waist of 43.5″ I’m a life long pear shape and my BMI was 35.2. I’ve had some health issues in the last year which has contributed to my weight gain. The insulin resistance was the last straw but also the kick in the bum that I needed!!! I have to get my weight down,no two ways about it. I’ve been trying out some recipes with protein powder. I’ve made wraps and bread. The wraps have been a particular success-a bit like across between a pancake and omelette. Have a look on Protein Pow. The wrap has about 75 cals and 6-7g of carbs. I’m limiting them to twice a week -trying to develop new eating patterns. I wish you so much luck x

Weigh in this morning a tiny tiny loss of 0.1 kg, not surprised, however its a loss and not a gain. Half way through the diet, another 4 weeks to go. Dinner tonight at a Chinese restaurant friend’s retirement party then Australia Day which is my husband’s birthday, breakfast at a local cafe in Fremantle then dinner at a friends in Perth to watch the fireworks. The Chinese will be hard, breakfast is OK with eggs but dinner will be difficult, hubby wants a pavlova for a birthday cake, will eat the fruit and cream. Its going to be a difficult week, so tonnes of willpower needed. Guess its the hardest thing for everyone, those social engagements involving food. Good luck to everyone, you are all amazing with great losses, will let you know how I go.

    Hi from NSW Ebs!
You are braver than me, but I’m only in my 2nd week. I am facing a social engagement soon with lovely friends who are big eaters and drinkers and I’m tossing up whether or not to tell the hostess about the BSD before I go. What do people think? Should I tell her or just eat what I can from her lavish and carefully planned spread? There will only be 6 of us so it will be noticed. i don’t want to be a subject of conversation tho. I’m trying to be a bit under the radar except for my nearest.
Sounds like you are going to have a lovely week. I don’t like meringue so pavlova would be the perfect dessert for me! Use the willpower you have. Don’t expect yourself to have more than a normal human amount of it tho.
    Best wishes,
    Chrissie63
