Here we are as the end of October is almost upon us . Halloween and the sugar monsters are no threat to us !I I was always relieved that all that sugar rush happened to kids in the half term holidays !!!

So whatever we are working towards, getting to a target for Thanksgiving, Christmas , the end of the year , for a special occasion , to manage pre/diabetes or just to feel better then this is the place , week by week .

Or even one day at a time if that feels easier .

Let’s hope people around you are being kind and if they are not, then that says a lot about them, not you !!

No pressure, no judgement but friendly , supportive advice . Sunshine Girl is back with us, welcome back Denise !!

Hoping you are in a good place as the week begins but if you are struggling , that’ s ok too . Just come and talk to us

RubyG and hubby here, it’s our one-year anniversary on this WOE!
And what a year it has been, we both feel so much better for it and don’t want to go back to where we were.
Hubby has slipped under the 16st mark for the first time in probably 30 years, but I have got stuck around 11st 12lb, which is more than I want to weigh. I’ve been feeling a bit meh for a few weeks now, and the menopause seems to be settling in, with hot flushes now a frequent occurrence. So, this week’s plan is to revisit MFP from a year ago, recreate some of those meals and focus for the next 8 weeks again.
I know I can do this!

Welcome Bernie R ! All the best as you start out. You are in a good place here. Lots of experience and great success. Is this the first time you have tried low carb ? Let us know how you get on , don’t worry if you get some carb withdrawal initially. Plan your meals. There are some useful references for recipes and general info on low carb eating so just shout if you need a bit more info.
Keep us updated on your progress.

Of course you can do it RubyG. You have done brilliantly so far. Yes I found I needed to switch things up a bit and look for different recipes as my meals were getting a bit samey. That’s ok ..simple is good too but I sometimes needed something a bit more interesting.
I like the divalicious recipes and also The Ketogenic Kitchen by Dominic Kemp and Patricia Daley.
All the best to you and your hubby as you continue.

Yay happy anniversary Ruby!! You’ve got this!!

Bernie, welcome to our little group! We’re all here for you whatever you need, and you can almost guarantee at least one of us will have experienced what you have! I speak for the carb flu/carb withdrawal crew, I suffer DREADFULLY from it so if nothing else I’ll sympathise if you get symptoms! Currently gulping gallons of water now actually to try and stave off the headache I know is coming as ive only really properly started again over the weekend. It’s not working, I already feel like I’ve been hit by a bus!

My mantra for this week is to be kind to myself. I’ve got myself in a terrible state the last few days feeling completely overwhelmed with work, so I’m aiming to take a step back and try and focus on one thing at a time. Wish me luck as I’m generally not a very zen person!

Hope the headache is not too horrendous. I like essential oils to soothe headaches..lavender oil and a Doterra blend but I bet you are already on the ball there.
Have a good week. Thinking of you.

Today I have a gynae appointment just to check all my bits are in place 😱. Trying to catch up with stuff I didn’t get done during lockdown etc. New glasses on order. Have to book a hernia op later but that’s for winter.
    That’s enough about me .
    Look after yourselves folks! Xx

    Hi everyone,

Welcome to BernieR, I see you have blood sugar issues and it is great your doctor recommended this plan as not many agree with it. We can assure you it works. What are your aims, weight, BS, etc. I am T2 but doing so well on this.

RubyG, congrats on your anniversary. Has it really been a year I have been an avid fan of your thread and like to keep up with you. We are now identical weights as of this morning for me. Need to get a wriggle on and lose some more with Christmas in mind. Im aiming for 11 stone by Dec 17th when we head back to UK to see family.

Lauren, take good care of yourself – big hugs.

Wendy, you are definitely all there although Im not familiar with your bits. Does your gynae make you stand there in the total nuddie like mine used to. She prodded me and said un peu grosse. I didnt go back to her and my doctor G qualified in gynae and he looks after my bits 🙂 🙂 🙂

Bernie R it is good to see that your Dr recommended this diet, my GP, Consultant, nurse, dietitian and even my physio daughter all said 800 calories would not be sustainable, I think all on this forum would disagree with that! As SG says it works. On hearing my results both GP and Consultant said “Wow well done, how did you do it?” !!!!!!!!!!

Sunshine Girl – your Gynae/ Dr sounds v rude . I remember going back to see gynae for a check up 3 months or so after child birth. I was so proud of myself having lost weight post child birth til Chinese Dr said sth on lines of ‘ still so very fat- when you lose? ‘
At the time I was within BMI range – perhaps 10 lbs more than I should have been.
Needless to say, felt completely shattered, esteem at rock bottom.

Nowadays I’m probs 2 stone more than then. God knows what he’d say to me now !!

I have never heard of anyone in the UK having to parade naked for a check up, nor do women in the UK have to have a compulsory smear check to get a pregnancy certificate for maternity leave purposes. Bernie R, you may be a man or a woman, but I have started a new thread “Class of 2019” which I hope will echo the chat when I joined the forum then which was always encouraging but really focussed on the way of eating which is what this is about? …There’s me and Magic Bean (who I hope is feeling better…).

Hi all, thanks for the good wishes! Unfortunately my headache this morning turned into the mother of all migraines (so maybe can’t blame carb flu) and I’m only just emerging! Wendy yup I’m on the essential oil ball! I also have acupuncture tomorrow which will help. I made pistachio crusted chicken for tea which was nice, sort of like chicken nuggets 😂

I for one would just like to say please all keep sharing your funny little anecdotes, I love reading about the WoE, getting advice yes, giving advice when I’m vaguely qualified to, supporting each other, but I also firmly believe that life, and the way we all support each other in it, is about more than the food we put in ours mouths. I am a better person for knowing all of you, and you have all supported me through some terribly traumatic times with much more than just recipe ideas, and I truly mean my life is better for having you all in it, warts and all. Knowing I can be completely honest in here, opening up when I need to, knowing there’ll be words of encouragement in whatever way I need them, is truly valuable to me.

    Love you all

Hi all, I admit I enjoy the general chat on the weekly threads, and keep my diary-type thread going to keep me accountable and maybe document what I have or haven’t eaten.
Our bodies are strange beast though, aren’t they? Yesterday morning I weighed 11st 12.2lb, I kept to <800cals and <50g carbs yesterday, drank all my water and didn’t snack between meals – this morning I weighed 11st 9.4lb!
On another thread someone mentioned weighing all components of a meal again, as guessing doesn’t work – I totally agree with this. I went back through my first 8 weeks on MFP and have started logging all food weights again in order to regain some form of control over the stealthy portion size increase.
Yesterday’s lunch was the faithful Asian-style chicken broth, and supper was some pork tenderloin with King oyster mushrooms and hispi cabbage. The portion size was enough to satisfy me, while feeling like I could eat more (but I didn’t, there were no leftovers).
I’d started to fall into the trap of stressy-eating between meals and telling myself it was OK because it was all low carb good healthy food. The scales and my jeans didn’t agree with that assessment. And the occasional square of 85% dark chocolate was starting to become a nightly occurrence, so that’s been stopped too. I am still having half a cup of milk kefir with my single Brazil nut every night though.
Today’s lunch will be a shared tin of sardines (trying to eat oily fish at least once a week) with some homemade krauts and pickles.
Have a good week everyone, Year 2, Day 2 for me today 🙂

Hi everyone, can I just say to sixturkeys (and welcome back by the way), I am sorry if any of the banter on this thread has offended you or if you feel our conversations are inappropriate for a diet site. We run a weekly thread to keep people engaged in the short term, so people can dip in and out as they please. This is a thread about the diet, about losing and gaining and about worries about how the diet works, carb flu, diabetes, but so much more. Over the past 2 years there have been so many other things to worry about and the diet is just a link that binds us together but we are here to support anyone struggling with daily life, loneliness, loss of loved ones or not seeing anyone for months. This can be a lifeline.

If you go onto other threads it might not be appropriate to discuss the fires in Canada or California, the death of a horse, mental health issues and even some of our funny stories but on this thread we welcome it. We have all been through a lot together and we are happy for people to share. Having said all that, please feel free to join in with us when you want to or you can go to your own thread and keep it diet related. I hope others will dip into threads that suits them, we are not restricted to one subject or thread.

Back on with the diet. I have already lost 0.8 kg from the weight I was after the holiday and like you RubyG, have taken a chunk out of the goal weight.

I too am going out right now so will end. Hope you are all doing well and keeping on,….

    Hi everyone !
I am looking after a little boy today so we had a trip to Emmaus and picked up a few treasures, a Spirograph, some books and some linen napkins ! Simple pleasures
I wanted to reply to 6T as others have done and to explain how I view this weekly thread.
I understand 6T if the non diet related posts are less interesting for you. When I first found the forum in September 2018 I was hungry for information and advice and received that and so much more, making firm friends along the way
    .
For me it was infinitely more than just learning how to stay low carb and regulate insulin levels. I indeed read so many books and gained very valuable insight. I was aware though, that for me it wasn’t just a question of eating less or better to discard 30 kilos. Why had my numerous attempts failed dismally ? I had to get to grips with many other issues of why I over ate and to reconcile years of abusing food.

I realise that we need the basic nutritional information but we need so much more too.
We are a majority of women on the thread with occasional input from men who tend not to stay around after reaching target and rarely discuss emotional eating etc.
I doubt I would have stayed on the thread if it had remained a diet and recipe focused thread as I honestly don’t need the same support and accountability 3 years down the BSD/ Fast 800 / extended fasting path . I do however value the empathy and support which prevails on this thread and hope to give a little back where I can.

Life is tough at times, extremely challenging for some of us,especially in these Covid times . Who would have thought we would be discussing a pandemic and the ongoing challenges ? How could we not ? Many have lost loved ones, fallen ill, been separated from their family, lost their livelihoods and it is for me natural to provide a safe space to discuss mental health as well as our meal plans.

It is people who make up the thread and those people come and go freely .It is their input and freely shared experiences which make it so rich . As you can see the list of participants changes and is very different from 2018/2019 but it seems to work for us. I will continue to host with Sunshine Girl and SunnyB as long as we are needed.
I hope 6T that you will check in on our weekly thread because we would like to know how you are doing but fully understand if a different thread and a more diet focused thread works better for you.
I do believe there is something for everyone on the forum and each thread has its own character and particularities.
    I love ours !

Indeed we are lucky to have access to specialists in France (although it is getting harder with longer waiting times for appointments) I have had a few ops in the last few years and it’s good to have a follow up check after Covid disrupted my normal routine. I made sure I wore clean pants (no more bloomer incidents ! ) You need to have known me a long time on here to understand that reference 😂.

Glad all your bits are in order. I must say my naked experience with the gynae is very old style France and you are very much more likely to get a robe these days. However, I must say the French are a lot more relaxed about being naked especially for medical examinations.

Just had a success full shop. It is great when you go out a come home with everything you went for. In our case it was rear windscreen wiper, vole treatment for our ravaged garden, jeans in a smaller size that I forgot to get in the UK and our favourite frozen foods from Picard (a bit like Iceland).

Good day food-wise, yoghurt and frozen berries for breakfast, miso and chicken soup for lunch and my ‘clear out the fridge’ Wednesday frittata tonight. Enjoy everyone.

Good discussion the thread this week, I dip in and out depending on where I am mentally.

Re. cooking king oyster mushrooms – I slice them lengthways, lightly cross-hatch the cut surfaces (like you would do with calamari) and then fry off in a hot cast iron pan with lashings of butter – fat is not my enemy on this WOE 🙂 They are usually accompanied by a piece of steak, or venison loin or last night’s pork tenderloin. There is a balance between getting them cooked through and brown enough without burning, so I usually turn the heat down after I get the initial colour, and turn them a few times until cooked. They do have quite a tough, meaty texture, but they feel very substantial and are tasty (it’s probably the butter) and are negligable in terms of cals and carbs.

Happy Thurssday everyone. We are getting some lovely sunshine here in France and I understand it is similar in the UK.

Trying to stay on the subject of the diet I am pleased to say I have lost a total of 3lbs since we got back just a week ago. I didnt really start back seriously until just 2 days ago and that is when I have lost most of that. Having been on this diet for over 5 years (in various degrees of strictness) I am still amazed that getting back on plan after a short break can have such a good outcome. I know a lot of it is water weight but still very motivating. So my 12 lb goal loss for Christmas has crept down to 9 lb. I am so motivated I have cancelled an evening out on Monday 1st Nov for a Halloween party in a restaurant. First of all it is too soon to mess up the diet and secondly I am doing sober November and dont want to ruin it on day one.

Looking at my menu plan for the week I am staying under 800 calories and even allowing for a small square of 80% dark chocolate each evening and my carbs are at the highest 35g and the lowest is 17g which is probably why the plan is working so well right now.

Have a good rest of the week and keep on keeping on…

Well done SG. Your motivation is legendary ! I have no doubt you will reach your Christmas target or get very close .
We have decided we are staying in France again this Christmas. It doesn’t feel settled enough to go yet. I get stressy about travel …I am a wimp.

Back to just the two of us here. My little charge has been collected, clutching the preloved Spirograph and book on cars that we found yesterday.
This afternoon we went to buy a selection of preserves to send to my boys in Australia..confit duck, various pâtés and terrines . We are waiting on a bottle of vintage cognac to pop in too.
I am thinking that if I send this parcel next week there is a chance it could arrive by Christmas 🙄.

I am having a bit of a dilemma here. I could not resist a visit to our local apple farm which has lots of ancient varieties of apples. I bought several kilos. I am struggling with depriving myself of fruit at the moment and fancy a crisp apple. I am not going to be making tarts or crumbles I promise !
I think I just have to see how introducing higher carb foods affects me. I have a glucose/keto monitor and will do regular checks.
I have never had a problem with eliminating white carbs and processed foods are definitely a no no. Fruit is another story though and we have an abundance of wonderful, fresh produce here . I won’t be scoffing mangoes and pineapples though !
Halloween…hmmm..none of that nonsense here 😉. We are too far from civilisation ! I was always relieved not to have to manage kids who were hyper after so much sugar as Halloween fell during the holidays. I haven’t seen any celebrations or special events round here, SG. To be honest I don’t think I would be tempted . I hope hubby didn’t mind you cancelling ?
Anyway …thinking of absent friends again. Amz still hasn’t checked in yet…. Articfox is quiet too and Windy Julz.
    How are you doing ?
Talking of Scotland I am reading “Shuggy Bain ” at the moment. It’s very good. Not an easy read but a book that will stay with me , unlike others that I could end up buying twice believing the book was new to me ! Fortunately Amazon reminds me I already downloaded it on my Kindle.
Better go now and sort some food. Thinking of red peppers stuffed with halloumi, lemon and thyme!

Hope everyone is ok and the week is not proving too challenging.
Bernie/ Bernadette how are you doing ?

Wendy, if it helps I was also ‘frightened of fruit’. I started to have a small satsuma each afternoon a few months ago and my blood sugar stayed the same, my weight wasn’t affected because there were so few calories and I really enjoyed the pleasure of eating ‘fruit’! I occasionally have a crisp apple chopped into yogurt for breakfast and it’s wonderful! I really don’t think we should be so ‘frightened’ of carbs that we deny ourselves the beauty of a crisp apple now and again. I remember Esnecca being really carb fearful to the extent that any carb very rarely passed her lips ….. I wonder how she’s doing at the moment?
Sometimes we just need to reset our mindsets and relax a little …. carbs aren’t poison especially when they are packaged in their own skins!

Hello Verano ! Yes I think you’re right. We shouldn’t be fearful. I admit I was a lot more rigid in the beginning although perhaps not as much as Esnecca. She really was the low carb ambassador after her spectacular success.
So yes..I will relax a bit around my apples. I think like you I have been committed to this way of eating for so long now that I am not going to be tempted by unhealthy carbage. I am an over eater still though ,haven’t totally cured myself so I have to be vigilant even around healthy foods.
    Thanks for that V xx

Wendy I think it’s important to have some balance – yes things like apples are slightly higher in carbs, but they are also nutritional powerhouses – so much fibre etc. so I think that balances the carb intake, obviously not every day but I see no issue in sometimes having some fruit, I certainly do. Just like I eat nuts most days in moderation because they are so good for you nutritionally. I also eat far more tomatoes and peppers than someone more strict might eat! Remember the basic principles of the BSD are Mediterranean which is nutritionally balanced, wide variety of foods and low carb, not zero carb. Also a good idea to include fat or protein with the carbs. You do you!

I have made a point of writing this post in Word initially as the time window on the website can be limited. To clear the air, I am always up for a general chat, in fact on earlier threads don’t think I could be shut up at times. A plain “diet sheet” thread has never been my intention now, though in fairness, issues about weight and for some related health problems is most probably what draws people to the forum in the first place. A peril of dipping in only infrequently to a weekly thread is missing some posts and it seems then coming over as lacking in any empathy. WindyJulz, I am sorry about your horse. I have had cats and dogs and I know the pain of losing them. I do understand that losing a companion you saw from his first breath and then brought on must be really hard.
My issue in the immediate is that I have lost my mojo. I can’t blame lockdowns, I can only blame myself and basically I think boredom. I lost 14kg, but have put 8 back on, though even then from clothes fit I am leaner than at the equivalent weight then. JGwen I am sure could explain. But most I think ending up back on the tum unfortunately. So I need to work on something. I did enjoy a venison burger and pan fried sweet heart cabbage with a few fennel seeds chucked in for supper. Was tasty! Treated myself to autumn display. which may or may not copy here….

Friday already, how did that happen. Had another loss in weight and now looking to behave myself over the weekend.

Not to labour the point but if it was taken to its original form this site is called The Blood Sugar Diet and was designed for people with blood sugar issue. I dont think you have to have blood sugar issues to do this diet because I believe the carb loaded diet we have been sold over the years will lead to health problems down the line. However, as we have a real mix of reasons for using this plan I restrict my talk of diabetes to those who might be affected and might need a bit more guidance on how the plan can help them. If I talked about diabetes in every post I do I think you would all be sick to death of me.

You are right 6T that dipping in and not reading the whole thread might lead to misconceptions and not knowing the full story. For example on this weeks thread I greeted someone with the fact that I recognised they were having blood sugar issues because I read every newbies profile where they have filled one in. If they want to discuss that or need extra help then they know I am open to that. Not everyone wants to expose their medical issues.

Anyway, lets put that to bed and accept each thread can be different things to different people. I just want people to stay engaged as a way to keep them on plan and not to feel they would be castigated when they stray and they can come back at any time.

Have a great weekend everyone and koko

Just joined. I started on Wednesday, 10/27. So far, so good. I was already doing intermittent fasting (16/8) and mostly eating Mediterranean diet. But after losing about 25 pounds, I’d plateaued. After reading about the benefits of the Fast 800 for weight loss and diabetes (I’m pre-diabetic), I decided to give it a try. It isn’t feeling too hard to stick to so far. I think it helps that I’m used to confining my eating to a shorter period each day, so it’s just a matter of consuming less in that time period.

Looking forward to checking in with you all weekly! Best diet luck to you all.

well, I’m in a real slump and struggling to get out of it…..to top off a difficult few weeks, which I’ve previously written about here (thank you all for the support!), my youngest son (12) came down with covid last Friday (not yesterday), meaning not only has he been ill, but also that put an end to most of our half term plans, I’ve had to wfh etc etc….and I’ve just been feeling so unlucky that this is the 3rd (!) time we have had covid in our household 🙄…..and just not been able to get my positive mindset going at all….I’ve been actively comfort eating carbs (and wine) although have managed a bit of exercise…..but I thought this morning I’d pick up this thread, see how everyone is doing, and having started reading, got up the courage to get back on the scales…..not surprisingly I am back with that pesky 10 lbs to lose that I gained over the Summer (I’d previously managed to lose 4 of them)….so, I need any motivation you can send me…I’ve started the day well, with a measured bsd breakfast and coffee and I’m booked onto online Zumba…better get a wriggle on as it starts in 40 mins!…..my feeling is that I need to do BSD in it’s pure form until I am back to goal (because one potato leads to 12, you all know how it goes….😆!) and then try again to find a maintenance that will work for me….give me anything you’ve got!
So good to hear all your news, especially glad your bits are in order Wendy 😉😘
    Love to all Tulip xxxxx

Tulip sending you enormous hugs and motivation and love!!! You can do this, I think you’re not the only one who needs/wants to get back to basics, I know Ruby is at the moment and I’m going to be from tomorrow because although I’ve been trying my best I’ve just been so stressed with work trying to follow the plan properly has been too much effort on top, not had too many slips but relying on convenience foods a little more than I’d like and I need to get back to cooking with actual ingredients! So let’s do this together ok??

PS Did you see NICE finally published the new ME guidelines, and they FINALLY stopped recommending GET – as a victim of that I’m very happy!!

Sorry to hear of the ongoing struggles Tulip/Clare and you definitely need a break but yes… too many things to juggle . Try if you can just to eat as healthily as you can when you are feeling yuck as crappy carbage will just compound the problem but I know it’s not easy when you are fatigued and low and you want something quick and comforting
We are all here to support you as you get back to basics,Tulip
You will get your motivation and routine established. It sounds like that is the case for quite a few if us right now so we will start a November Motivational thread for anyone struggling . SixT..come and join us !

thank you Lauren, thank you Wendy!!!

Yes, let’s all do this together!
    Just finished Zumba (hooray)

Lauren- yes, I saw that about GET- it’s about time too! Can’t help feeling that long covid has pushed these things on a bit- but I guess whatever helps, and it’s a good thing that hopefully everyone with LC (inclyding my daughter) won’t be subjected to it too!

    Love and hugs,
    Clare xxxxx

Awww I felt quite emotional today watching the news of families being reunited now Australia has opened up . Can’t wait for that day but in the meantime I am risking Parcelgate again . Let’s hope this one arrives in time for Christmas . I am a sucker for punishment .

Anyway folks today is the start of another month and time for a new reboot type thread which I shall set up in a little while .

    Hope everyone is ok ?

    See you later xx

    Hello
It is great to read all the positive and very real chats on this site.
Well done for you honesty and being willing to help others on their journey.
Now for some reason I can only reply on my computer and not from my phone unless I log in every time.
But I have enjoyed a few of the meals but not yet lost any weight .
I am thinking I may have to stick to all the meals for a few weeks in order to see some change around the waistline. A few kilos to lose and all around the Middle.
On the positive my blood sugar levels have been stable which is what the doctors wanted for Me.
I have on order The BSd Book as I want to read in more detail about the way of life.
    I have the recipe book.
I did not have any headaches etc because I do not often eat a lot of refined carbs.
I did eat a lot of fruit and large meal sizes so need to cull these habits a little.
It is great hearing that it is possible to live with this eating pattern.
Hope you are having a great day.
Keeping healthy one meal at a time.
    Bernadette
