Hi slimmingruby and welcome!
I also have PCOS and know that a low carb approach is best, although I’m struggling to get back on track. I lost three stone following this plan a couple of years ago but it’s all crept back on and I’m stalling trying to restart but I’m determined to try!
The first few days are the hardest, you might feel dizzy and tired and headachy, this is called keto flu and it doesn’t feel nice but you can sometimes alleviate the symptoms by making sure you are adding some extra salt, drinking all the water etc. I never really find anything helps if I’m honest and I just have to kind of get through it but you do eventually.
I’d hardly call myself an expert in terms of practical aspects of the diet, others are far more knowledgable than me, however I am a biochemist by background and I understand the science behind the diet so feel free to ask about that!
There are additional books and things which people will recommend, but for now the original Blood Sugar Diet and Fast 800 books by Michael Mosley are your best start – they are very accessible and don’t go too in depth into macronutrients etc. some of the other texts are quite intense. Personally I’d only try to change one thing at a time first, so maybe drop the carbs first (you’re aiming for below 50g if you can, most PCOS sufferers need less than 20g a day but it’s really tough getting down that low so start at 50g and tweak as you go and get used to it) – dropping the carbs is the most important part anyway and especially for PCOS as we are incredibly insulin resistant. Then drop your calories, and then if you want to try you can start experimenting with intermittent fasting so 14:10, or 16:8 or occasional 24h fasts etc.
Top tips for starting out
– drink allllllll the water and then more water
– add a bit of extra salt for the first few days
– don’t be afraid of healthy fats – full fat dairy, oil, avocado, oily fish, nuts etc.
– use a tracker like MyFitnessPal to track your carbs and calories
– once you’re ready to start tracking calories weigh everything!!
– if you slip up, just get back on track, you’re human and this is a big adjustment!
– use herbs and spices to make your food taste delicious, you’ll get bored very quickly otherwise
– ask us for any advice!!
I’m sure others will be along with some tips!
Good luck!
