Sorry i havent been here for a while..not logged in anyway, but have been back occasionally to read posts.
i’ m back and need help if poss from the clever folk here!
Ive lost a ton of weight on 50 g carbs a day over the last year or so..but unfortunately then learnt i have lymphoedema and lipodaema ..which means no matter how much ive eaten low carb and how often ive fasted, and lost inches most places,my knees and ankles stay disappointingly and annoyingly chunky!
Seems a bit unfair after all the hard work, but my lymph glands dont work properly and store fluid in my knees and ankles. I now have to wear what i call ” the monstrosities” ..tight tight stockings, all day every day to try stop it getting worse * sigh* !

However some studies apparently show if you go down to 20 g carb per day,you just might see some gratifying reductions in the tree trunks! Not quite sure how you go down to 20 g a day ..seems pretty drastic to me!

is anyone here going that low,and if so,what do you eat?
Yr thoughts Please on whats the best way to tackle only 20 g carbs per day – AND keep reasonably full?
I am used to 50 g carbs a day,but surely, with advice, i can tackle this ??? πŸ˜‹πŸ˜‹πŸ˜‹πŸ˜‹ i am never gonna have slender pins but wd love to get them just a little less..chunky!!… Love to all xx thanks for reading X

Hi Yowzer, I’m sorry you’ve dealing with such an annoying and uncomfortable affliction after all your hard work. The good news is sure you can tackle 20 grams. I’ve been at 20 grams and below since I began the BSD on August 1, 2016. The only time I exceeded the limit was Thanksgiving of last year (I had 2 spoons of Mom’s mashed potatoes). Nowadays I’m so used to it I very rarely get out of the single digits.

I eat lots of eggs, smoked fish, turkey, chicken, raw greens (arugula, Romaine, green leaf, radicchio, watercress, spinach), cooked greens (rapini, chickory, escarole, endive, bok choy, spinach again), avocado, seaweed (by itself in salad or mixed in with miso soup), kelp noodles, soy (tofu, tempeh, canned black soybeans), hemp milk, flax and chia seeds, a maximum of 2 oz of cheese a day and every fermented food I can get my hands on (garlic sauerkraut, kimchi, red cabbage sauercraut, beet kvass, brown miso, horseradish leek kraut, gingered carrots, raw pickles).

If you’ve been relying on the recipes in either book, you’ll probably have to set them aside, or alter them significantly. The trick is to choose the lowest carb veggies you can (meat and cheese are usually in the clear) and that means cutting things like onions, tomatoes, beets, pulses and legumes. I wouldn’t even consider making MM’s famous beetroot falafel, for example. When I need an oniony element, I use scallions, shallots or chives which are the lowest carb of the alliums.

You stay full by eating fiber and fat, ideally together. Half an ounce of flaxseed crackers and an ounce of cheese looks like a tiny plate, but eat it slowly and deliberately, chew thoroughly so all that fiber in the flax gets a head start on digestion, and by the time you’re done you’ll feel like you ate a three course meal. Kelp noodles are like that too. They’re all fiber so they fill every nook and cranny of your stomach. Top them with something like garlic and ginger sauteed in sesame oil with a sprinkle of toasted sesame seeds and the chopped dark green parts of a scallion and you have classic sesame noodles only they’ll keep you full for hours, unlike rice noodles.

I hope this works for you. My mom has edema in her feet and when it’s bad it really plagues her existence. Good luck beating it!

    Hi Yowzer,
I’m also sorry to hear about the lymphoedema and lipodaema and hope that the 20g carbs helps to relieve your symptoms. I’m 13 weeks (or maybe 14) into BSD and have been keeping to 20g carbs – and I promise if I can do it anyone can. It’s been working well in that I’ve lost weight and my blood glucose levels have come down. But, I can’t really offer advice as I know I haven’t got it quite right yet – it has been a bit of a scramble at times. The issue I found is balancing eating up to my 800 cals whilst making sure I stay at 20g carbs. Also, in the last few weeks I’ve relied too much on animal protein i.e. meat and green veg (but that’s just me). So, this is a really helpful question and a great reply from Esnecca. I’ll be trying a lot of these things out, too.

Now your back, hope you keep posting and let us know how you get on. Fantastic weight loss by the way.
    Marie x

Hi Yowser49 – It’s really nice to see you posting again! I’m sorry to
hear that your lymphatic system isn’t functioning well. I’m one who
has shed 146lbs following this WOE. I have stayed at <20g of carbs
throughout the journey, but now that I have been successfully
maintaining for @ 6 1/2 months the max I currently allow is 30-35.
For those who need a lot of variety to keep interested, this may
not be of interest to you. My philosophy has been to keep it simple.
All my proteins are clean and lean, i.e., wild fish, free range chicken
    breast, 1 x month pastured/grass finished steak, 1 x month roast
pork tenderloin, hardboiled organic eggs, organic greek yogurt.
I do still count grams of protein, according to LindaA’s formula:
1 gr of protein per kg of IDEAL body weight. Just about all of
my fat comes from plant based sources, i.e., 1/2 oz of almonds
or walnuts, 1/3 avocado, olive oil, 1 tbs chia seed, 1 tbs raw
unsweetened cacao nibs. I do include small portions of roasted
orange vegetables, 1/2 a carrot or 1/3 c roasted butternut squash
for the betacarotene value. My green vegetables consist of kale
or other bitter greens included in soups, as well as either cruciferous
vegetables, i.e., broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts or 8 oz.
of steamed spinach ea. day. The following will bring you in @
    16-18 net carbs per day:

    Breakfast: 1/2 c greek yogurt
    8-10 small raspberries
1 Tbs each of chia seeds and raw unsweeted cacao

Lunch: hardboiled egg and avocado in a spinach salad or
2 hb eggs with 1/4 c raw unpasteurized kimchi/kraut or
    1 c. soup w/ a hardboiled egg

Dinner: 3-3.5 oz of animal protein
1 c. broccoli or 8 oz steamed spinach
1/2 c mashed squash, or roasted califlower, or an
    occasional 1/2 a roasted 6″ carrot or 1/2 a roasted beet

    Snack, if needed: 8-10 nuts

The warm weather is over here in the northeast region of the U.S.
so we’re pretty much past dinner salads with added ptotein for
dinner, but we made ample use of them in the summer months.
    Perhaps this will help?

    Best wishes,

    Allie

Hi Yowser — my mother had very troublesome lymphodema after a hysterectomy and she hated to wear the compression stockings — she finally started to get lymph massage about once a week and that really really helped enough that she quit wearing the stockings except for long plane flights.
The lymph massage is a special technique that moves the lymph fluid up toward your heart and out of your extremities. I know she had to hunt for a specialist but that person helped her immensely.

Yowser, this was a great idea for a thread. Thanks for starting it.
I don’t think the MMosley book provided any guidance with regard
to carb levels, though the prevailing wisdom here seems to be 50 gms.
Most keto diets, although a little different, seem to recommend 20
to reach ketosis, burning your own fat as your primary fuel source.
The accepted wisdom on reaching this state is that it takes 3-14 days,
sometimes 3 weeks in stubborn cases. I achieved it @ 10 days,
and the limitless energy that came with it was very noticeable.
As a long time suffer of CFS, it was miraculous. Some manage this
on 50gm of carbs, but I wasn’t one of them! πŸ™‚

    Best of luck,

    Hi Yowser
Sorry you have had this medical set back, frustrating for you to have to re-evaluate your eating patterns again, having made such good progress to date. Still, as others have already told you, 20g carbs a day is doable and that is the level I have use for most of the time I have been on the BSD. The menu advice Esnecca gave is spot on and more or less what I eat myself.

Hopefully you will be able to make the adjustments necessary and have success with improving your leg situation – best of luck!

Hi, Verano! I don’t really know if willpower was involved, maybe
just willful stubbornness πŸ™‚ Two months in I hit an 18 day plateau
(on 50gm of carbs) so something drastic was called for. I actually
didn’t discover these forums until very recently, so I just did my
own research, only to find out that I’d been doing BSD Fast 800 all
along! How crazy is that? Unfortunately, mainstream medicine
here in the States is woefully ignorant of the Newcastle studies
or MM, for that matter. It’s up to Californiagirl and Esnecca and

Whatever it is/was Allie it worked and more amazing is that you were following BSD and didn’t know it! Today I am going to do my best to stay at 20g. I hadn’t realised but since I started the refocus thread I’ve stopped eating breakfast and I no longer miss it. So today I’ve only had chilli prawns, watercress and a tablespoon of Hellmans salad cream which altogether are just under 4g. First problem is that I have homemade Thai chicken curry for dinner tonight. I have no idea how many carbs are in it. I have that with sliced asparagus and broccoli so I’m just hoping that I’ll stay within 20g. I know there are about 6g per 100ml of coconut milk so I should be ok.

If I manage without anything else, apart from water, I should stay within 800/20. Jus interesting to see how hungry I’ll be???

A Friend sent me this..long but great info and advice and some very good points worth noting…

“Guessing that you’re fighting an inflammatory response.

To get as low as 20 g per day would likely require weighing your food and entering the ingredients into a food tracker that converts that information into the amount of fat, carbohydrates and protein contained in that food. What this process reveals are sources of hidden carbs such as those found in something as non-carby as tomato sauce, for example. It’s very easy for these hidden carb sources to add up to far beyond 20 grams.

Realize too that protein, beyond your body’s immediate needs, is quickly converted into glucose. Again a suitable food tracker reveals this.

Another possible step would be to consider using a glucose meter to test your body’s reaction to various foods. That way you’ll know to either avoid them or to cut down the serving size to what you body will tolerate.

Both of these methods and the full rationale behind them are well detailed in a book called
Keto for cancer by Miriam Kalemian
Don’t let the title of the book put you off. There’s a wealth of well-written, easily understood information in that book that applies to everyone wanting to lose weight (for better health, quality of life…), that also have a willingness to apply proven steps that can get you there. That you’re researching and reading medical studies(!!) is absolute proof that you are one of those people.”

I think I put it on the November challenge thread, they didn’t use my case for the initial article, and this week seems to be extracts from the new book, but given they went with the short term party dress diet theme I think it makes sense that they used the two ladies with relatively little to lose as the article case studies, no-one was going to lose 8 stone in 6 weeks. I still have the dresses, they haven’t been picked up again yet, and I really quite enjoyed the experience (well except for most of the makeup session, I had watering eyes for a couple of days).

My local organic food store carries them, but you can get them online too. This is the brand I buy: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Sea-Tangle-Noodle-Company-Noodles/dp/B00CPQ1C54/ref=sr_1_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1510330187&sr=8-1&keywords=kelp+noodles&dpID=517p%252BFevVnL&preST=_SY300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch

There’s a trick to preparing them, one I discovered through extensive experimentation. They come out of the bag crunchy which doesn’t really work for most noodle dishes. Boiling them like regular pasta won’t soften them unless you do it for ages. My system is fast and easy. You dump out the bag into a collander, untangle the strands and rinse under cold water. Put a tablespoon of baking soda in a large mixing bowl filled with warm water. Stir until it’s dissolved, add the noodles. Let them sit in the baking soda water for 2-4 minutes, depending on how soft you want them. You can see the tension relax and the strands go from taughtly coiled to smooth. Drain. Rinse. Set aside until you’re ready to use them.

Hi Yowser- My sincere apologies for not getting back to you sooner.
There are so many interesting new threads at the moment that I
think I may be a bit overextended. I couldn’t be more sympathetic
to your challenges with CFS however, after dealing with it for 17
years myself. It’s been accompanied by fibromyalgia as well. At
one point the brain fog was sufficient to have me finding my cell
phone in the refrigerator, and I once made a quick trip to the market
in my bathrobe instead of a winter coat! I’ve never come across
much in the way of knowledge on the subject, and I was too disabled
by pain and fatigue to conduct a serious investigation anyway…..
My condition followed a diagnosis of Lyme disease, a tick born
bacterial disease that attacks the joints, cognitive and neurological
functions, sleep disorders and a hypersensitivity to noise. It took
at least 8 years of antibiotics, oral and IV, to get rid of the cognitive
and neurological manifestations, and I had somehow accepted that
post Lyme syndrome, chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia, as well as
a prodigious weight gain were always going to be a part of my life.
BSD changed all that. Now I have returned to the ideal weight I
was 17 years ago, the pain has been reduced by @ 50%, and CFS
is a thing of the past. The miracle took place after I reduced carbs
to <20. I’m very interested in how this might work for you, too!
You clearly know how to lose weight, 100lbs, wow. Congratulations
on that accomplishment! Have you ever tried using ginger, turmeric
or cinnamon for their anti-inflammatory properties, or adding raw, un-
pasteurized kimchi/sauerkraut to your diet, or other fermented
foods? There are also many anti-inflammatory diets circulating
on the internet that might be worth investigating to see what BSD
friendly elements they have to offer. I haven’t been doing any research
lately, but I do remember a Dr. Weil who has published a lot on
this subject, and he’s even created an “Anti-Inflammatory Food
Pyramid”. If you find anything useful there, please let me know!

    Best wishes,

Hi Yowzer I’m with you finding some days on 20g fine and others not so easy. I think I’m falling into the trap of finding a good very low carb meal and eating it day after day. I did that yesterday and then was so hungry by mid evening that I raided the freezer. I toasted two slices of bread and had that with butter and cheese. It was lovely! But now this morning I have woken up and I’m literally starving! A lesson to be learned!

I know that variety really is the spice of life for me so I need to get out of this lazy rut and start cooking new foods again.

I have been taking Turmeric tablets for around 18 months or so now and I have found it really works. The curcumin content is the important part and it needs to be close to 500 per 500mg tablet. Also it needs to be taken with black pepper to aid absorption. The one I buy is quite pricey from a vitamin company online and has bioprene added, a form of pepper. The stuff from a famous high street chain isn’t as effective because of the active ingredients and is even more expensive I think. My oh has periferal neuropathy and his legs can be really bad but he has also found a huge improvement since taking turmeric. However, I have a friend who tried it for a sort of carpal tunnel problem and it didn’t work. I think its wonderful but I guess it’s horses for courses.

I’m off to look at the keto challenge anything that helps me back into the groove will be great at the moment!

Unfortunately I’ve not tried hard enough to stay below 20g because I’ve been having some snacks and wine. BUT, I know it can be done and I will try my best to join you at 20g soon. Social life just getting in the way at the moment but not ruining my overall plan. Weight stable, blood glucose fallen again, cholesterol good and still drug free! BUT I do need to get back to losing again.

NO, NO, NO don’t let things go off the boil at the weekend. We keep saying to ourselves this is a life plan and not just a diet. So, until you reach you goals, whatever they happen to be, you have to stay as close to 20 as you can. No room for ‘extras’. I must write that in large letters and stick it on my wall to keep reminding myself!!!! Promise I will join you as soon as, even if it’s not every day I will do my best to make it on most days.

My favorite way of using chia is to grind it up in my spice grinder and it to coconut, hemp or almond milk (all unsweetened, of course). A quarter cup of chia to a cup of liquid is the usual proportion. Let it sit on the counter for 5 minutes and it’ll thicken all on its own into a pudding. Absolutely delicious. For a big treat, try it with coconut cream. It’s high in fat and therefore calories so you can eat much of it on the 800 cals, but the carbs are virtually nil and the rich, custardy mouthfeel feels like an indulgence of the highest order.

Other sources of fiber without a carb hit are flaxseed crackers, lupini beans, rapini/broccoli rabe, spinach and sprouts (just the kind from low carb veg like broccoli, alfalfa, clover, etc., not the kind from beans). I eat at least two items from this list every day.

Thanks Yowzer and ESNECCA…Seem to be getting on ok – don’t feel hungry and trying to drink plenty of water – but not enough over the last few days – so aiming to increase today!

The scales are not moving too much at the moment despite being below 20g carbs each day. So trying to not be demotivated and am drinking water! Any other ideas? Should I be monitoring fat % each day?

    Thanks for any help xxxx

Can any one give me some advice on how to calculate the amount of net carbs? The app I have been using to measure food intake does provide the option of seeing g of fibre, and g of sugar and g of carbs. Is net carbs = g of carbs – g of fibre or just g of sugar.

JGwen, I’m in the States, but the way our nutritional labels read, they list total carbs,
then fiber, then sugar. The calculation is total carbs less fiber = net carbs. I’ve never
used sugar calc. in the equation. I think UK nutritional labels already have the fiber
    subtracted.
